The American Thrift location in Lauderhill is my ultimate favorite thrift store location to go to. FYI I live in Miami and travel 47 miles to get to this store. I love the great selection of clothes, shoes and accessories this store has curated. Staff are always helpful and friendly. I highly recommend going to Maria, the (Lead Cashier) at the Lauderdale store. Maria is very efficient, patient, friendly, kind & always making my thrifting experience pleasant & fun. Working in customer service is never an easy task but the fact the Maria can provide phenomenal customer service, and the ability to manage difficult and rude customers while always remaining calm, profession and smiling is her virtue. I LOVE this location and only come to this location because of Maria plus thrill of thrifting is to find unusual and unique pieces that you wouldn't find anywhere else. Stopped by and found a set of broken dumbbells that were clearly marked "AS IS" with a handwritten price of $5 on the plastic wrapping holding the set together. After waiting about 20 minutes in the 7-items-or-less checkout line, cashier Noemi refused the sale claiming there was "no price" despite the visible handwritten $5 marking. What was more frustrating was that she took the item from me, brought it to the back to the manager, then returned without the item and both refused the sale. The item was already damaged and labeled AS IS, so the refusal made little sense. Very poor communication and customer service experience, especially after the long wait. Disappointing experience over a $5 item that was clearly marked. Not coming back again. read more

I've thrifted beautiful handmade crochet, woven, & knit items here. I also find Native American art occasionally, which is my favorite part about these stores. I'm from out of town and visiting. This place is a mega thrift store with an upstairs and downstairs. Clothes in downstairs and furniture upstairs. I read reviews of the business but the rudeness on top makes it almost unbearable. Don't try to use a buggy, there is not enough room. The clothing is packed in racks so you really struggle to see anything. I would not come back because I never need anything that bad to go through that again. read more

Selection is huge. This store is always crowded but I have always been able to find what I was looking for. What I don't like is all the extra charges they add onto each sale and they even charge sales tax on newborn clothes which the state doesn't collect that tax. Value is okay considering that they pay nothing for their merchandise. I have never found the sales help to be even slightly friendly and if you drive around to the back of the drop off area, you can watch the employees pick through the donations and load up their vehicles. read more

I've been shopping in this store for many years. And I've never had a problem until today. They need to be more considerate and compassionate toward handicapped people. I was taking the elevator up to the 2nd floor and I need the cart to lean on and walk with. And one of the girls in the dressing room became very rude and hateful and I told her I said I don't know what you think I'm going to do with this metal container, stick it in my purse and then she got angry. I guess I shouldn't have said that, but anyhow, she just was very rude and there was another lady very nice. She said I'll take your things up front and I'll bring you back another cart. Which she did so when I went to check out. Nobody could find my items and it didn't seem like it was any big deal. It was to me because I spent a lot of time shopping for what I had already gotten. How something has to be done about the staff in that store!!! I finally start calling to speak to the manager. I called 5 or 6 times but but the answer it went right to voicemail. And then Gary called me back and I started to tell him what happened. And he hung up on me. So I again left a message. I said it's no wonder your staff is so rude. Honestly this place is a gem but you have to be willing to really look! They have a great furniture selection with new options all of the time. This is one of my favorite places for frames and kitchen/home goods/decor. Lots of great books and material finds for projects. They have a large selection of clothing but it can get quite crowded while trying to look through it. Some of their prices are really great while others are not, just like most thrift stores nowadays. Just be aware of their return policy. read more

They now open the dressing room to try on clothes 1/2 hour after they open the store. The line is long to try on clothes due to this and if you have more than 5 items you have to go to the back of the line again to try remaining items on I stopped shopping there, telling my 1010 friends on Facebook. This place is terrible. There are a group of eBay sellers who stand near the back and push and shove everyone to try to get the new items first. The management doesn't care. One rude lady brings her own stool so she can sit there and push her way up to the new stuff coming out. This was the largest of the thrift stores we visited on our afternoon thrifting adventure. Parking is a bit tricky with signs threatening to tow you if you park in the wrong lot. After a bit of searching and patience we were able to secure a spot. The first floor has a ton of clothes. I just don't have enough patience to pour through endless racks. If you are looking to save money or you have kids who outgrow everything so quickly than this is a great option. Also on the first floor is jewelry, purses, shoes, and household decor including holiday. They had a selection of Halloween costumes. The items for the most part looked worn. I would pick something up only to put it back down because it was dirty or broken. Stairs or an elevator will take you to the second floor with furniture, art, and exercise equipment. The only piece of furniture I liked, a table was $1,400! Most of the furniture looked really used. Senior day is Wednesday when items are half off. Every Friday from 4 to 8 is happy hour when all customers can get half off most of the store. They also have a rewards program. There are other locations of this chain around South Florida and one in N.Y.. I saw a sign that says they put out thousands of new items on the weekend. This was my least favorite of the 3 thrift stores we visited all on University Drive and all just a few blocks from each other. It's huge and has a ton of clothes on the first floor. It just felt very industrialized -- and had no "personality". A big box store that I was surprised to see was as busy as it was. I looked through some of the clothes and nothing really appealed. Prices were just okay -- no real bargains. Along one wall were a few shelves of bric a brac, but again, nothing very exciting to me. I can usually find something to buy in every thrift store I go to and didn't see anything here I would even consider buying. Upstairs is their furniture area. Lamps, and big items, etc. I was so not thrilled by their stuff downstairs (and not needing any furniture) that I did not bother even climbing the stairs or finding their elevator (which we discovered later -- there are no signs!). I've been coming to this thrift store for years. i completely understand inflation being a thing, but when you get all of your merchandise for free you would think you would be coming here to get a deal! i saw a fake "prada" bag that was almost $70! i also saw a fur jacket and they were charging $129 for it. at this point calling this a thrift store is a joke. the prices here are so outrageous. they overcharge for anything with a brand name on them and take advantage of people who come here in search of something nice without breaking the bank. don't come here unless you want to spend $40 on a run down falling apart coach bag. oh and the staff is rude. read more

The Hermes sandals I found here keep me coming back however more often than not I don't find anything I like. They have a decent furniture selection and I am always curious to see what's behind the counter. Parking can suck! I visited this location several times. I went to the changing room with 2 shirts to try on. The attendant, Fatima told me I could go in. After 5 minutes while I was removing my clothing she came to the curtain and told me I had to leave . I was stunned and asked her why she said you have 2 shirts it should take you no more than 5 minutes to try them on. I told her I needed to change back into my clothes she said no and I need to leave. I feel violated and discriminated against. When I went to the cashier she said yes that our policy. I spoke to a manager that basically said I'll speak to Fatima and that was all. I asked her to see this policy in writing because no one else there was in the changing rooms that I saw experience that. I am seeking legal counsel for discrimination read more

This location of the American Thrift Store is huge and there's a lot to see! Their prices are fair and they have a great section of home furnishings and accessories. Something else that sticks out about this store is that they also carry silver trays and other serve ware that would be impossible to get anywhere else for their prices. Like all thrift stores, it takes patience to find good things but I recommend that when you do, buy it right away because things go FAST. My prized finds upon my visit are a brass lamp, 2 for $49 red chairs, and authentic glass beer mugs. Can't wait to go back and see what else they have! read more

My favorite thrift store that I now frequent a couple times a month to find some treasures. My latest finds have been some Manolo Blahnik Heels, a Le Creuset Pot, a Christmas Tree, amongst many other finds. I usually dont spend more than $7.99 on an item although the christmas tree was $33 ish with the 20% off coupon from the rewards program. My latest visit was on a Monday and to my surprise, I was told this is when they remove the old merchandise to make room for new stuff, so the store did not have as much stuff as on the weekends but the prices on what was left were good. As always the employees are very nice and seem to be the same crew each time I go (which is nice). Lots of cool merch but I recommend you are there before they open on the weekend to avoid the crowds and have time to look thru everything because the store is big! Also suggest you take a picture of the colors of the day as soon as you enter the store so you know what color tags are on sale that day. read more

Lauderhill location is a Great thrift store. Everyday it's a hit or miss. I've been here a thousand of times and have found some great deals and very unique items. Only reason I didn't give it a 5 star was the parking. Ohhhhh it's a nightmare. Here for the first time today. My daughter loves shopping for clothes in these places. Outside, the building looks like a bank or office building but the Inside is like a Walmart.... TWO STORIES! This place is a mad house with very long lines and the most expensive prices I have ever experienced for a garage sale type thrift place. Many items are in rough shape and nothing is refundable regardless if they work or not. Only two fitting rooms and parking is getting harder each time I visit. Price gauging is evident in the furniture section. Yesterday I saw bed frames priced as much as Big Lots. The difference is everything is donated for free. The word family is in the name of the store. They should take into account families wouldn't be able to afford this second hand store. An item I wanted (a REALLY used and worn coach bag) did not have a price tag on it. I took it to the counter and the floor manager lady said "had it been anything else, I would've given you a price for it. But since it's this, I can't. You have to come back tomorrow." I explained to her that I don't live around here as I am on vacation. She said it "didn't work that way" to price items. So she took the bag from my hands and stashed it behind the counter. I was really disappointed. I was willing to pay the number she said but instead, they lost a sale. My mom and I are HUGE thrifters and will most likely not return here again. So sad. read more

This thrift shop is conveniently located on University just south of Commercial. It was extremely busy on this Sunday and we had to park behind the building. This is an incredibly large store with almost anything you could want. Today we were looking for chairs and proceeded to the second floor where the furniture is stored. There were so many items but we didn't find exactly what we wanted. On returning to the first floor, we walked the housewares and electronics but didn't take any time in the many clothing isles. Overall, this felt like a good choice for thrift shopping. Oh, don't forget to check the specials board just inside the entrance. Happy shopping! read more

Florida Breast Cancer Foundation. That is the charity that receives profits from the American Thrift Store (ATS) sales. I am clearing out my storage unit in Sunrise and had a complete living room furniture set that needed a new family, so I originally took it to the Salvation Army (SA) at Commercial & University Drive. The SA donation collection volunteer immediately told me they do NOT accept furniture donations at this Salvation Army location, but that I would have to take it all the way to the downtown Ft Lauderdale donation location! YIKES! They recommended taking it to the American Thrift Store around the corner on University Drive because they accept furniture donations...Off I went. The entrance from University Drive dumps you directly into the ATS parking lot which seems to remain in a virtual overflowing conundrum LOL. I could hardly get around back to drop off the furniture. I was cheerfully greeted by one of the ATS staff who gladly accepted all furniture items. I then walked up to the front cashier desk and was given a formal tax deduction receipt for my donations - SCHWEEET! I then looked around and decided to check out the ATS storefront. WOW! The place is constantly receiving items in the back door (donation entrance) and is immediately sorted and prepared for the showroom by a staff of at least 8-10 people!!!! My furniture was taken up the freight elevator and placed on display before I left! The storefront itself is 2 stories and GINORMOUS! The bottom floor is mostly clothing and toys, the upstairs is mostly furniture and housewares. ATS appears to stay constantly packed with shoppers because the low bargain prices. Their inventory is massive and is apparently being turned over at a very rapid pace. The faces are friendly, the smiles inviting, and the cause a worthy one. Come reap the benefits of ATS or just make a donation, either way you will feel better about yourself! read more

I would give American Thrift store a 5 star review if it wasn't for my second horrible experience with Roline who is a manger. What a horrible God awful attitude and she is impatient. I go to the thrift store atleast once a week and there is non need for a nasty attitude in such a clean place. I was at the register was a different cashier and I had a pair of jeans with the button missing but when you find a pair of jeans that fit like a glove you want to hang on to them. So I asked for a little bit of a discount (which they will do on damaged items) and she fought me on the fact. She said the prices the jeans like that and I said " no it looks like someone tries them in and popped the button off but I don't care", with an attitude and after a debate she gave me a $1 off the $5 jeans. My 2nd encounter was today since I have been overcharged by almost $10 before I wanted to watch her ring up the items. Roline proceeded to fight with me how she can't do that and what does she want me to have her do "have you walk around the counter and watch me ring it up?" My bright idea that this manager didn't have was to have someone else ring me up that doesn't find it to be a problem and she shoved me off to some woman named Lourdes who then shoved me off to some woman walking by with her purse on her arm.
