Unfortunately I was looking for some specific pieces for an event I was attending and though I got inspired by a lot I didn't find exactly what I sought... This is a very large store with quite a few items. I was shopping with two friends and we each found something to purchase. I took points off because we found quite a few items that were damaged and the prices are a bit steep for quite a bit. It's very high priced here, almost $30 for a one shoulder top, I do appreciate the creativity and the attentive staff, though. Earlier today I checked the hours before coming to this store and said it would open at 11:00am, my sister and I showed up only to find that the sign said it was open with the lights turned on but there was a second gate in front that was closed, there seemed to be no workers inside to open it for us. They have wigs, jackets, pants, shirts, full outfits, space suits, military suits and separates, shades, glasses, and other costumes and accessories. They accept cards, however the sales are final. Many years ago, before I ever moved to LA; American Vintage on Melrose was the first vintage store I visited in LA. It instantly became my favorite. Years later, now as a resident, I still pick the American Vintage stores (various locations in LA) as my favorite vintage hot-spot. The Sherman Oaks location of American Vintage is one of my top favorites and certainly my favorite vintage store (so far) in the Valley. Although service can be slightly awkward and sometimes non-existent; the store's clothing speaks volumes. An OCD/vintage buff's ideal; the store is divided into mens and womens clothing and then into decades/styles within the genders. American Vintage excels in vintage western pearl snap shirts, 70s dresses, guinne sax dresses, 80s prom dresses, 50s gowns, and 80s new wave dresses. I would have wished for a bit more mod scooter dresses but I did spot some asymmetrical and flight attendant styles. The shoes selection was sparse and consisted mostly of boots which I already have a million of. Also lacking is a large jewelry section so I mostly recommend this location for dresses. Prices are great in comparison to other LA vintage store including that of the Valley. Neighboring Valley store charge $45 for a dress equally sold at $27 at American Vintage. Highly recommended for the vintage buff who is tired of "vintage inspired" boutiques claiming to be vintage and with little 15 yr olds trying to purchase some plaids shirts trying to be "vintage". American Vintage is my choice for best Valley Vintage. read more

Spent the afternoon browsing the entire store! Pretty interesting collecting of clothing. I liked that they had some upcycled clothing in the front as well. The worst American Vintage I've been to. First off they won't sell you a top piece separately from the skirt that's not even present? I tried to buy a plaid crop top which was hanging on the rack by itself, and the managers rule is you can't sell it without the skirt....which they didn't even have near it OR in store for that matter. Then I found a cartoon T-shirt with a huge coffee stain in the front which I figured ok maybe doesn't matter I'll still buy it; then I saw the price and they really had the nerve to price it at $30 plus tax. I walked out. Definitely wouldn't waste my money there. Go buy NEW fresh cool clothing that no one has worn or ruined for half the price or same price. read more

Cool vintage clothing shop. They have shoes, handbags, belts, jewelry, Halloween costumes, masks, fur coats, and all are decent and worth looking through. You can even sell your things to them. They offer a decent price if your items qualify. Or you can opt for store credit for a higher payout. Went here to find a costume for my daughter's school event. But we also left with a brand new with tags dress that she could wear to a school dance or nice party. The service was also great. All positive experiences. Apparently they are a chain with 50 stores throughout the country. The reason this isn't a 5star review is because they don't have as much to sell as I can look through. Friend and I drove from Thousand Oaks to look for 60's wear for conference. Jed made this a fabulous experience. Fun, fun, fun. He tried to convince me to buy a black slip and kimono. Looked in the mirror and I looked like an old lady hosting a late-night tapas/sake movie night. Tried on about 4 other combinations but wasn't feelin' it. Ended up buying a tie-dye Indian silk shirt and fringe hippie boots at Iguana a few doors down Friend bought dress ($32) and white go-go boots ($48). After washing, dress had unrepairable huge hole in the front. That's the risk with a 50 year-old dress I guess. She ended up buying a brand new dress from Macy's.
