Today, June 15, I walked into American vision in Bayside. Queens pulled my eyeglasses out of my pocket with two broken arms and said I'd like this to be repaired and she said we don't do that kind. I said why she looks at them and says they can't be repaired. I was disappointed she looked down, started eating her food and didn't say anything else. I walked down Bell Boulevard found another eyeglasses place and asked if they could be repaired. They said come back by 5 o'clock to pick up my repair glasses. Ordered contact lenses with American Vision of Bayside. My contact lens prescription reqired no change, but they insisted on a diaopter exam. My prescription was exactly the same as from my first exam. I put a down-payment on contacts and ordered inexpensive glasses. The total was $760.00. Two weeks later no contacts, and instead of ordering contacts they only ordered glasses. I asked about the contact lenses. They had not ordered them nor had they any recollection of my having ordered them. Wanted to charge me again for contacts and or give me a prescription to get them somewhere else. My down-payment was $380.00 for what was supposed to be contacts and readers with a inexpensive frame. I havent had an eye exam in many years. When I walked in, the young lady at the front desk was very friendly and helpful. She looked up my insurance information and let me know my insurance covers a full exam. In less than five minutes, my exam started. The doctor was kind and knowledgeable. The exam was thorough. This place is a scam. Shame on me for not trusting the previous bad Yelp reviews. We came in for an eye exam because we had not had an eye exam in 5 years since we got lasik. After my husband and I got our exam, Xochi wanted to charge my husband $156 for "contact fitting" and co-pay. We were not informed of the fee ahead of time. We thought we were coming here for a regular eye exam. How would we know he needed contacts until AFTER the exam? They basically put a contact in his eye and wanted us to pay $136 for it. We never consented for the contact exam. Also I've never been to a doctors office where they tell you how much you have to pay PRIOR to submitting the bill through insurance. And after speaking to my insurance, the services were not $136 Please do yourselves a favor and DO NOT COME here unless you're trying to get scammed and DO NOT pay until after you speak to insurance Update as a response to the "business owner" that paper was provided to us afterwards and once again, the Insurance confirmed that the amount they told us was incorrect. It was NOT $136 for contact fitting charge (even though we never agreed to the fitting). So why would I pay extra for a fitting we did not agree to? Already the memories from my prior visit gave me a happy flashback. Julia looked up my insurance and told me I was covered for exam and glasses. Julia was the best picking out an awesome pair of glasses that fit my face perfectly. Next up was the exam with Dr.Kerinna McDonald. Dr.McDonald was awesome as ever, she examined my eyes and with the patience of a saint and a wonderful personality made my exam thourogh and to the point I've had many different kinds of doctors before and Dr McDonald rates above par of all the other doctors. I was quite surprised to see a spacious optometry studio when I walked in for my eye appointment for the first time. From the outside, this office and eye glass store looks like a tiny corner hole in the wall with dim lighting but it was actually welcoming inside. The Office was playing on the TV screen while I waited ten minutes to be seen by Dr. Chan. Dr. Chan was amazing and helped me answer all the questions I had about the eye exam process. The retinal imaging costs an extra ($30) but it was well worth it since he took time the time to carefully review and explain the scans he took of the back of my eye. Through my insurance I was also able to choose from at least 100 pairs of glasses for ($122) with polycarbonate and blue light lenses, which is a decent price and not at a high markup. For a similar pair of glasses I have been quoted at over $300 before and I should have walked out of those stores in the past. I am glad I found a trustworthy optometry office. There are glasses online for much less at $50 (and many add-on fees) but the American Vision associates allowed me to try on dozens of glasses I was interested along the walls and in the glass display. They also took the time to make sure the glasses I was wearing was fitted properly. Overall it was a great experience and I was able to get what I needed done in one hour. read more

I had an unpleasant experience with the American Vision Center on Bell Blvd in Bayside. A few weeks ago I went there to get my glasses because this place accepts my insurance. When I got there I talked to a young lady, I told her I needed to get a pair of bifocal sunglasses so I could read the GPS on the dashboard when I drive. She then told me that I would have to pay $180.00 extra because my insurance will only pay for reading glasses but not sunglasses. Then I asked her how much for the pair of sunglasses if I didn't have insurance, $575.00 she replied. After that, she told me if I decided to get the sunglasses I could go ahead and pick the frame. So I spent a few minutes picking out a black frame that I liked, but then later the young man who was supposed to do the measurement for the glasses told me "Can you pick another frame because this one is very hard for me to do it". I didn't know which one to pick and he finally picked for me a silver frame that I didn't like but I had no choice. Then he finished, I paid $180.00 with my credit card and I left. When I came home my wife asked me and I said I had to pay $180.00 extra for my prescription sunglasses. "Why too much?!" she said and she reminded me that last year when I had my 2 bifocal reading glasses and one prescription sunglasses done at Costco it only cost around $500.00 A few minutes later the same lady from the store called me, she said: " Sorry, I forgot to get your insurance information". Then I Said it's ok and I gave it to her. Then I asked her " Is it possible that you just make the reading glasses for me instead of the sunglasses so I don't have to pay $180.00 extra, she said:" No, sorry we don't have a refund policy" and I said ok then, but I think they overcharge me. The next day I called my insurance and asked how much the insurance paid for my glasses. They said the insurance would pay up to $475.00 which meant I only had to pay $100.00 but the charge was $ 180.00, so I came back to the store again on that day in the morning and talked to the same lady, I asked for her name and she said her name is Sochi. I told her that my insurance said that they would pay up to $475.00 so I was supposed to pay $100.00 but she said: "No, I told you $ 575.00 if you pay for it without using insurance" About one week later I came back to pick up my sunglasses and it was ok but I didn't like them because it didn't look good on me. A week later, I have go to Costco to do the grocery shopping and I stop at the optical department to ask them how much it costs to make the same bifocal prescription sunglasses and they told me that it would be about $200.00 Then I said I don't really need sunglasses but I want to make a prescription reading glasses and he told me it would be $125.00 but if I make a second pair then I will get a $50.00 discount and it will cost only $75.00 so I said ok I want to make 2 pair. The next day I call Costco and I said that I forgot to tell him that I wanted my glasses bifocal,and he said: "No problem we can change for you but you have to come back to do the measument. I hope my bad experience will tell you that the American Vision Center They don't care about customers satisfaction so they have no refund policy and they don't put a sign to warn you. Two young ladies behind the counter helped me pick frames for my progressive Rx. They were very patient and gave me good advice once they understood what I wanted in a frame. It is an expensive purchase and I was not sure of what to commit to. The glasses are a dream. They were not priced too high and the vision is great. They are perfect and I am happy with the purchase. Excellent staff & Doctor!!! I recieved a detailed and thorough eye exam with no forced unnecessary extra add ons as they accepted my union voucher as full medical paymemt. Doctor was excellent, friendly, knowledgeable and explained all he was doing as I felt in good hands with his expertise. I went here for a couple of years and then had multiple issues. The last time, I had to go in for multiple exams in order to get glasses I could wear without getting headaches and feeling dizzy. I found the office to be unhelpful and rude at times. Now I have a prescription less than a year old from them and it doesn't seem to be the right prescription that's in my current glasses. I would not recommend. I should also add that my frames started falling apart within a few months of owning them and I had to pay a fee just to get the broken frames returned for a new one. I got my new glasses at American Vision and can gladly say I was very satisfied with my experience. It's a family-run business and all the employees are very friendly. My doctor was very friendly and very informative, explaining what she was doing every step of the way (and even explaining that she purposefully wrote me a weak prescription for my astigmatism so I don't fall over due to the strength of the correction!). Her mother helped me pick out the frames, and she's quite good at it, too; the frames she picked on her first try ended up being my favorite by far, and I haven't stopped receiving compliments on them. They were also nice enough to give me a copy of my prescription in case I ever want to order glasses from elsewhere. I returned to AV to get the frames straightened and in the process they accidentally scratched one of the lenses, but they didn't hesitate to immediately order a new one (on the house) and replace it within the week. Overall it was a great experience, very easy to use with almost any insurance (I had VSP and they were very careful to explain all the options I had with my plan), and I'd recommend it to anyone. read more

Absolutely worst experience ever. I went in with my boyfriend and he already had his prescription just needed to get a new pair of knock around glasses. The gentleman behind the counter tried to repeatedly up sell. Now of course he's just doing his job but my boyfriend was completely uninterested repeatedly telling the man that he wore his contacts the majority of the time. This sent the man on a rant about how he should let his eyes breathe etc etc. Finally my boyfriend handed him his old glasses asking the man if he could find him the same ones. He was then just pointed in the direction of the glasses, a display with 6 sides for us to search through while he tried to let us know where it was from behind the counter. Finally just as we're about to leave the optometrist comes in and her and the man begin to talk about my boyfriends contacts and how he's having difficulty finding comfortable ones. Now normally this would be polite conversation but this man just wasted at least 20 minutes of our time when the plan was to drop off a prescription and get new glasses. Extremely basic insurance covered glasses. They went back and forth explaining how there were so many contacts to choose from (repeatedly) as we just nodded as said 'yeah we know' completely uninterested. Finally I'd like to end this review in the note that the majority of reviews on here attest to terrible customer service and upselling but only one is responded to by the business owner. I've been going to American Vision for about 10 years now, maybe more, and have always been satisfied. I find them very professional, courteous and friendly. I don't know about their prices because I've never compared, but the level if service is well worth what I pay.Dr Decker is terrific, I try to see her, but in one or two cases where I had to see someone else, I was very satisfied. I have been going to American vision for a few years now and never had a problem until today. I had an appointment for an eye exam and woke up not feeling well so to be on the safe side because of Covid I called them as soon as they opened to reschedule. The man on the phone was so unbelievably rude and unprofessional, I couldn't believe it! He was demeaning and his behavior was absolutely unacceptable. No client should ever be spoken to the way this man spoke to me. I believe in kindness and respect and this man has neither. Even during the COVID period, they went out their way to help any of their customers with emergency requests. My wife broke her only pair of glasses and I called and left a voicemail because they were closed but accepting messages, about 3 days later they called me back, I explained my situation, they told me to head down ASAP with the broken frames and in minutes got a new frame and I was on my way. Very very happy with my purchase. So happy I bought a second pair at 1/2 price. Nice selection great staff. I had just begun my eyeglass search and had no intention of buying without shopping around, but they suggested a style to try on and I loved it and bought it. I was surprised at how unprofessional this place is. Elyse Decker - the optometrist and owner had NO idea how to bill my insurance. She had no information on her contracted rate for eye exam, frames and lenses. She didn't even know her billing code. I had to call the insurance company and get all this information for her. She refused to work with my insurance company even though she has signed a contract with them. Basically, she told me to either pay her directly or get lost. Oh and her prescription is also wrong. I didn't even get my glasses yet, but I wanted to post a good review! Buying glasses is stressful and difficult enough (for me, anyway!), that I really don't appreciate rude or apathetic workers. When I walked into American Vision for the first time, I was greeted right away, and they helped me pick out some flexible/bendable frames, because I thought that was what I needed. Not a huge selection, but the salesgirl actually picked out a perfect frame for my face. I left and went to Cohen's, just to shop around, and I quickly came running back here! When I came back I didn't want the bendable frames so I needed to pick another frame (even though they remembered me, and had my frames waiting for me). The only reason I gave them 4 stars instead of 5 is that the selection seemed a little small to me. Didn't see anything I liked. However, I described a little bit to the girl about what I saw that I liked in Cohen's, and, lo and behold, she found the perfect pair for me. She actually picked out two that I liked. When I decided, they did an eye exam right away (no wait), very quick, efficient, and everyone was super friendly. I'm sure the glasses will be great. Definitely worth it to come here. Dr. Elyse Teran Decker is amazing and hands down the nicest doctor I've ever visited. I came in a few weeks ago with a very bad and painful eye injury due to wearing damaged contacts, and even though I didn't have an appointment, she took me almost immediately and did everything she could to help me. I've been back for several check-ups since and she always makes time for me, explains everything clearly and is just generally very kind and patient. Also the reviews stating they are money hungry or aren't willing to work with people on pricing is surprising to me. Dr. Teran Decker did everything she could to make sure I wasn't paying an arm and a leg (or an eye) for my prescription medicines because I do not have insurance and I have no doubt the services she provided me would have costed double had I gone somewhere else. read more

I recently bought glasses from an online retailer and needed them adjusted. I called American Vision to see if they do adjustments for glasses purchased elsewhere and they said they do. I even asked about a fee (fully expecting to pay for their work), but they said it would be free of charge. I went in and saw the optician. He immediately said, "These are all wrong for your face! They are too small. Whoever sold you these glasses ripped you off. I can't do anything with these." I thanked him for his time and tried to leave, but he continued to make comments and ask questions about where I purchased the glasses and saying I should return them and purchase glasses from American Vision. At this point, I was feeling humiliated in front of other customers. I went to wipe my old glasses on my shirt and he said, "you shouldn't be doing that! Let me clean them!" Once again, scolding me like a child. I handed them over and he started commenting on them, thinking they were the newly purchased glasses, saying things like, "the bridge is wrong for your nose" and "they are all scratched!" I told him they were scratched because I've had them for three years and he realized his mistake. I pretty much ran out of the store. I walked a couple blocks to Eye Supply and for $10, the optician there was happy to adjust my glasses. They fit perfectly now. I felt compelled to write this review after reflecting on my experience. This is my second year with American Vision and they are GREAT! Dr. Teran really takes her time to take care of you and your vision needs. My first visit last year was great as she looked at my eyes (which have really high astigmatism) and found a great pair of contact lenses for me. I realized that these lenses tended to shift more often than not, so when I went back for my yearly check-up, she found another pair that would be better. Unfortunately, I ended up tearing two pairs of trial lenses, but she told me not to worry about it. I felt so bad that I offered to pay for the damages, but she said it was ok. I haven't had great experiences with eye doctors until I came to this place. The receptionists are also very cordial and helpful. They always call when my items are ready to be picked up. Walk-in's accepted, flexible appointments, great selection, friendly staff and late hours on Thursdays. Been visiting this location for years because they accept our insurance - VSP, but we go even for non-insurance needs as they are very reasonably priced. Never a problem getting an appointment on short notice or after work hours. Knowledgeable staff will go the extra mile to pay attention to detail and make sure you leave satisfied with your eyewear. Over the years the five in my family have had emergencies, needed repairs, replacements, and they really have your back. I had to return 3 times because of changes that I made in my order-nothing to do with the store. Probably the best overall customer service I have ever received from any business establishment. With much regret now I brought my almost 90 year old mom because she had been there 2 years ago and had a good a experience with the salesperson (who is no longer there). Even though she has insurance which covers some the expense she had to pay more out of pocket in addition to getting lens changed on sunglasses. The salesperson, Julia, we were working with was very nice but as we were discussing costs, a man who didn't introduce himself but may have been an owner, butted in to insist that it was a good deal. After I said it depends on my mother's pocket, in other words not his, he again insisted that it's a great price. I should have walked out then and save her the following aggravation. I'm sorry that I didn't go to VINCENT'S on Francis Lewis a real local mom & pop. Now we are past 4 weeks since her glasses were ordered and still have not received glasses much less a call. Again Julia is very courteous and certainly respectful. I was told that the lab (which is used by the insurance) broke the first pair of frames and a second pair was sent out, so that set back glasses a week or so. I realize that things happen and I have no reason to doubt this happened. I would call on a regular basis to follow up on status of glasses and after 4 weeks exactly they were supposed to be delivered and I made appointment. An hour before leaving, 12PM, I called to make sure glasses came in before taking my 90year mother out during a storm..guess what..no glasses..no phone..well end of day came without a call! I manage an office, I'm not the owner, but I make it a point to return calls and keep clients up to date, even when there isn't much to report. It's being professional and respectful. As an owner who counts on repeat business and referrals, I think you would notice an order that has not been completed for a month and that the client has made a dozen calls. Including insurance coverage for my mom for one pair of glasses the cost was appx$425, I got my glasses which are , progressives, polycarb, transitional & anti-glare on a 'real' designer frame at METRO OPTICS for appx $500.
