South of the Border Motor Hotel

This was my first time staying at the motor inn ( as an adult) and i was in for a treat…read more First and foremost - the staff- everyone was so friendly. From the housekeeping that i told when i saw them outside to disregard cleaning my room to the reception staff, everyone on the grounds was so nice. Now listen. When I booked this I was not expecting the Ritz, but i will say I was pleased with the room! It was huge. My room had two double beds with tons of space and a huge bathroom. Now, the room was not gorgeous and the tv had like ten channels and the wifi barely worked but these rooms and the hotel is designed for a quick stay so I get it. I tried using the indoor pool- you get your towels from the front desk- the towels are super cheap and make sure you have your wrist band in case security asks you (yes you read that right). The indoor pool as well as the outdoor pool could use some TLC. The bottoms need to be scrubbed. Actually everything could there. I feel like every thing here needs to be tweaked just slightly. The pool chairs outside had like permanent dirt marks in them. Things were usable but looked dirty if that makes sense. Now of course, the hotel is on South of the Border grounds which puts you near their restaurants and shops which for your overnight is good and you can walk back and forth to places. I wondered about safety and such being that it was such a transient place but there were not issues at all. I didn't feel unsafe at all. My car wasn't disturbed. It wasn't noisy and actually, i slept well. If the place was kept up better, it would be a really great place. I know they don't get the traffic that I'm sure they used to, so i see why they don't. But the location is a great stopping / overnight spot from so many great places. I'm glad I stayed here and i might possible do it again.

A Timeless Stay at the Motor Inn - South of the Border, Hamer, NC…read more The Motor Inn at South of the Border is more than just a place to rest--it's a piece of Americana that deserves to shine again. From the neon glow at night to the nostalgic charm that lingers around every corner, staying here feels like stepping into another era. The rooms are simple, comfortable, and filled with the character of a roadside treasure that has welcomed travelers for generations. What makes this place special isn't just the rooms--it's the lure of South of the Border itself. This iconic stop has been part of countless road trips, family vacations, and southern adventures. Keeping it alive, relevant, and celebrated is important not only for travelers but for preserving a cultural landmark. That's why I, Thomas Miller--author of South of the Border: The Motel That Eats Time--have dedicated my writing to capturing that magic. My book blends nostalgia with horror, weaving a story that keeps South of the Border alive in the imagination of readers everywhere. Horror might seem like an unlikely ally, but through it, I'm shining a light on this place, ensuring its legend continues and new generations rediscover its lure. If you're planning a road trip through North or South Carolina, I highly recommend booking a night at the Motor Inn. Come for the neon lights, stay for the history, and experience the atmosphere that inspired my novel. I normally don't leave negative reviews, but this experience was bad enough that I feel obligated…read moreto warn others and hopefully get the attention of management. When I arrived, the room was missing several basic things. There was no phone, no key, and no TV remote, which immediately made it difficult to even contact the front desk. Unfortunately the problems only got worse. The room itself was extremely dirty. The floor was sticky, the walls were stained and damaged, and the bedding had cigarette burn marks. This was supposed to be a non-smoking room, but it clearly had been smoked in recently. Even more concerning, I saw cockroaches in the room, which is unacceptable at any price point. Other issues included: * No Wi-Fi code available (staff said they didn't know it) * The front desk phone just rang endlessly when trying to call * The toilet was loose/shaking like it wasn't secured properly * Overall cleanliness was extremely poor Because of the condition of the room, I didn't even feel comfortable trying the shower. What makes this even more frustrating is that management initially offered a few thousand points for the trouble, but after that there has been no follow-through or resolution. I'm attaching photos so management and future guests can see exactly what the conditions were like. I hope someone from upper management takes this seriously and addresses these issues, because no guest should have to deal with this.

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED--STAY TF AWAY FROM THIS SHITHOLE. KEEP DRIVING TO LUMBERTON OR HOME!!…read more Our first surprise was the Superior King room we reserved AND PAID FOR ONLINE, was unavailable, the girl at the desk put us into room 112. Room 112 has 2 Queen beds. We were let in by the front desk person, because this room has a non working electronic lock. That meant we could not both go anywhere to eat dinner. Anytime we went out, we would have to leave the door open so we could get back into the room. There was no smoke detector in the room, we did look for it and it was inside a drawer with the battery removed. The telephone did not work, it was plugged into the wall. This does not seem safe or legal to rent a room without operational smoke detectors. While the TV remote control had batteries, there was no cover for the battery compartment. The microwave oven was dirty and has a hole in the front window. We did not use microwave. The floor appeared to have water damage as some of the wood floor was buckled and lifted. There was a black substance in the cracks of the floor, possible mold, but did not take a sample for testing. The toilet was dirty, appeared to have iron stains in the bowl. The tank or something in bathroom was leaking water onto the floor near the commode. The refrigerator compressor made a moaning sound ALL NIGHT, which made it difficult to sleep. The biggest surprise was when we attempted to shower the following morning. At first brown water came out of the spigot, that cleared up but we were unable to adjust the temperature so the only water to shower with was COLD! No adjustment of the knob was possible. I'm going to call the county health department, there is NO WAY THIS PLACE HAS AN OCCUPANCY PERMIT!!! NO NEED FOR THE MANAGER??? TO LEAVE YOUR STANDARD REPLY THAT YOU'LL DO BETTER NEXT TIME, there won't be a next time. TTFN REDROOF INN
