We go to Newport every summer and this was our first time trying America's Cup Charter and it will not be our last. I was looking for something different to do and came across America's Cup Charters. We opted for the daily 2-hour ticketed sail. Our 12 meter yacht was the 12 US 17 Weatherly, which is a legend and one of the three surviving wooden America's Cup defenders in the world. Bruce, Erica (the skipper), James, and Rebecca were super nice and extremely knowledgeable about the boat, sailing, history, and landmarks in the area. Erica had great command of the vessel and was able to make things fun while still ensuring the safety of everyone on board. Due to Covid-19, America's Cup Charter is limiting the number of people included in each tour and requires everyone to keep their mask on. I felt completely comfortable the whole time. I was visiting Newport and had some free time and booked easily on line a seat on a sailing charter . Well... it poured rain prior ... but weather cleared and we went out on schedule 5:30. Excellent value and experience. The Captain was a retired history teacher and his son and daughter were the crew . Excellent people, friendly , knowledgeable of Newport,America cup details, who owns which yachts docked , and made sure everyone had a great time, helped hoist sails, do the grinding, steer boat. I have been on larger sailboats and this boat the Wetherly was smaller and required work by some people on boat and actually taught people how things work during a sail. There was a full group of people and some young kids and it was fun to see how much one boy knew more than I and others about sailing. The kid was infectious how much he was enjoying himself with his Dad ....everyone enjoyed questions, answers, and after 2 hours ; I felt like we were all friends for a long time... The knowledge of the island , the yachts, history of the waterfront houses was truly quite interesting. The son and crew member Teddy was highly respectful of all and the Captain'scDaughter clearly both knew their stuff. The water views at sunset were worth trip alone... what more can I say... easy booking on website ... no drama . Even assured refunds or reschedule if sail was rained out... very fair and reputable. What more can I say ; but anyone visiting Newport should include a sail with this professional run operation. I'll go again in heartbeat and already planning my next Newport visit and another sail with this company. read more

Took the afternoon sail left promptly at 2:30p and we were under sail just a few minutes out. Light winds but plenty to get up to 8+knots, which is a comfortable pace. There were only 10 passengers and 3 crew, so not crowded at all. Free H2O. We've done Adirondack and Rum Runner both of which are good, this was great! My husband and I took a ride on the Weatherly - the sailboat that won the 1962 America's Cup - over Labor Day weekend. It was a perfect day - sunny, dry and 75 degrees. We sailed around Newport Harbor out to Beavertail Lighthouse then back to the pier. It was beautiful and so incredibly RELAXING. I can't wait to do this again. We were so lucky with the weather. Everyone else on the boat was having a great time, too. There were about 10 people plus the crew. You can bring snacks and drinks. The ride was two hours - 1-3 pm. If you're in Newport for a few days you should DEFINITELY add this to your itinerary. The crew asked for volunteers to help raise the mainsail and steer back to the harbor. Being on the Weatherly was waaay better than riding on the ferry. read more

The absolute highlight of my recent trip to Newport was an afternoon sail with America's Cup Charter ("ACC"). ACC does a lot of things, but our large group that day did one of the most amazing things available: we raced 8 America's Cup boats against each other. Let's get a bit of background, and I'll explain. ACC charters sailing on old America's Cup boats. Specifically, on America's Cup boats from a long time ago, when the Cup still used the 12 meter formula (look it up, I can't explain everything). ACC has a stable of...well, at least 8 of these boats. With only one exception (as far as I know), every single boat was actually raced in the America's Cup at some point in time, and many of the boats are actual America's Cup winners. Thus, sailing these things is a bit like being given a chance to drive Al Unser's Indy car around the track a few times. So, enough foreplay. On the day in question, a huge cadre of lawyers descended on the Goat Island Marina like a plague of locusts. After some standing around in the cold, we crewed up the 8 yachts and took to the surprisingly calm waters of Narragansett Bay. The average crew size was 15 of us lawyer yokels, a captain, a strategist (necessary for racing), and a utility crewmember (like a good utility infielder, a valuable addition to any team). We sailed around the bay as the captain identified local landmarks and as most of us learned the ins and outs of sailing giant racing yachts (not a common pastime in my boyhood home of Wyoming). The boat I was on, the Onawa, was the oldest of the fleet, built in 1928, and (for interesting but technical reasons we don't need to go into here) was the only boat out racing that day that had never competed in the America's Cup. After some touring and training, it was time to get down to some racing. We did a test lap of the course once (and it takes about half an hour to lap the course), then settled in for 3 races. Our boat finished 3-1-3, and was one place away from taking the whole thing. We got a bad start on the last race, and still managed to come only about 2 meters away from beating one more boat and taking home the prize (yes, I'm a bit competitive). My assigned task for the racing legs was as a "grinder." Typically, a team of two grinders works a specialized crank which is used to trim sails. In our case, the grinders trimmed the jib. It's amazingly hard work, with good exercise for the abs, thighs and biceps. You beat ass for about 30 seconds, work slowly for about 4 minutes, then rest for about 7 minutes, then do it again. Once the race started, I wasn't cold anymore. I loved the experience. The crew on our boat was absolutely fantastic. Friendly, informative, and good. The boat was beautiful (I've included a painting of the boat I crewed up at the top), and the experience was fantastic. read more

We really enjoyed our experience on America's Cup Charters. We learned a lot about our boat, the Nefertiti, and it's history in the America's Cup. Our captain, Walter, could not have been a more friendly and engaging guy. He knew a lot about the Nefertiti and also about all of the other boats (of all kinds) that we passed during our sail. We helped a couple of times with the activities of sailing and we really enjoyed that. The ships crew (two) were also super nice guys. Not for children! Tons of moving around to avoid being in the way of the crew. My son got splashed by a wave and was soaked at the beginning of the trip. He cried through the whole thing unfortunately. Too many people were allowed on the boat. Would have been much more enjoyable with less people on the boat. We just did a sunset sail on the American Eagle with Captain Herb and his crew. We had family in town from Texas who wanted a true Newport experience.
