Beautiful ferry ride across the bay to get from Providence to Newport. It takes roughly an hour, but it feels like shorter, and when the waters are calm, it is a great way to get to Newport without all the hassle of driving. You go past some cool lighthouses as well as go under the Claiborne/Pell bridge, which highlights the majestic feel arriving into Newport. Sadly, I saw no wildlife on the ride, a bit of a bummer as I would have loved to see something in or out of the water en route. However, the simplicity and effectiveness of this seasonal ferry (it only runs from Memorial Day to Columbus Day), make it worth riding. read more

I would assume the ferry gets very busy in the summer months. Buy a ticket and get a reservation in advance. Their website says that "Seastreak is a leader in revitalizing fast passenger ferry services in the New York metropolitan area. We proudly offer high-speed catamaran services to points in Manhattan, central New Jersey, Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, and more with a fleet of robust vessels." And they also operate a seasonal ferry service between New Bedford and Martha's Vineyard. I am pretty sure I have only taken about 2 Ferries my entire life and this was definitely one of the most comfortable ones I have ever been on. We had about 20 people on our Ferry and there was plenty of seating for everyone. Even had a table with seating in the middle for those who want to play games on the ride or catch up on work/study stuff while on the way to Newport, RI. Seating was extremely comfortable!! I can never fall asleep on any ride or vehicle. This ride I was so comfy, I passed the hell out the entire hour back to Providence!! If 0 stars were an option I would've put that! I was a passenger on the ferry from Newport to Providence this evening. I was to take the 5:30 ferry back to Providence after a normal, nice, and exciting day in Newport. And I am absolutely appalled and disgusted at the racism, racial profiling, and segregation I witnessed with my very own eyes and ears by your "crew" and numerous intoxicated, white, female passengers. Sadly, I am a "white woman" and I am ashamed and embarrassed to even be tonight. What I watched happen to and listened to happen to a group of african american church members on an anniversary outing was the worst situation I have ever been in and I want to file a formal complaint. I would like the contact information to your HR department, and whoever handles this ferry's complaints. I would like the supervisor's information please. Not just a customer service rep who will put this on the back burner. These people, including elderly people, and women with infants and toddlers were literally segregated and forced to get off of a ferry ride they were on first and paid for just like everyone else! I will not sit back and allow this to be ok while a bunch of intoxicated white woman got to stay on the ferry and mothers with children were literally left stranded. If I do not speak up and advocate for what is right I would be just as much of the problem as them. PSA: if you are driving from northern Rhode Island to Newport and NOT taking this ferry, you're doing it wrong!!! Can't believe the time and money I have wasted in my truck... gas, bridge tolls, paid parking, traffic... its horrible... but not anymore! I recently discovered this ferry and will never drive to Newport again! We had horrible weather the day of our trip, but the high speed ferry still cut through the choppy water with ease. It felt less bumpy than a train ride! SO much better than we expected for the weather! We were so comfortable we even braved the rain and wind on the top deck for a few pics... and glad we did! The seats are wide and comfortable and are divided between the top outside deck and the inside. Where there is a small snackbar with cocktails (try the bloody mary!), too. Tickets are surprisingly super reasonable and parking is free in Providence... another win! We cannot wait to ride the ferry again (hopefully on a nicer day!) to get the most out of the stunning views. The ride is about an hour (less than driving!) and interesting the whole time. This is a great way to get to Newport and avoid traffic. It takes 1 hour to get to Newport by ferry and is only $10 each way. It fills up fast on busy weekends so get tickets online before you go. Great views along the way. Both docks are conveniently located. India St is walking distance from downtown Providence but they do have a large fenced in property for autos. Not sure how secure it is so if you plan on parking call ahead. This is not a bad area but Providence does have a relatively high crime rate and the Mayor doesn't seem too concerned about it. The Newport dock is in the heart of Newport walking distance to shops and restaurants and a somewhat long walk to the Cliffs. Overall the service was excellent and well run on the day we used the ferry and runs late during the summer weekends. read more

A nice ferry trip between Providence and Newport. The route is scenic and the ride was uneventful. Some areas of improvement: - The restroom had not soap in the soap dispenser nor hand sanitizer in the corresponding dispenser. - The ride over had no security nor greeting announcement over the PA. The return trip did. - It would be nice if someone would point out interesting points or sights as we travel from city to city. Most of the people are taking this ferry for the sightseeing and for the enjoyment of the bay, not as a mode of basic transportation. - Some areas of the deck had trash and spilled coffee and stuff all over....Not cleaned in between trips. The ferry service was great, on time, as promised. However, the RI mandate requires masks on public transit and we were told multiple times masks were required inside and while boarding. I went on this boat as part of a church anniversary. We had gone from providence to Newport. They overbooked the boat and even though the church tickets were purchased in advance some members were kicked off. It's important to mention the church is made up of all people of color. On the way back to providence we were told to let all people who were not part of the church board before us even though we were lined up. Afterwards we boarded. Then a group of 10ish white people felt they were entitled to seats on an already full boat. They cussed and yelled and then eventually pushed past the person in charge of boarding. They then started kicking people of the boat. This happened because they had overbooked the boat when tickets for the church trip were purchased well in advance. One important person to mention is a black mother with her infant and three toddlers who was in a leg brace. She was kicked off to make room for the white people. At some point drunk white women started getting violent and attacked some of the church members. Police were called and they said everyone would be getting off the boat but they only kicked off church members who are all black as well as black people who have no association with the church. They even arrested church members for defending themselves against the aggressive attacks of the white women. They then refused to service all members of the church which included over 130 men, women, children, disabled, and sick people for an issue we had not even caused forcing us to find our own way home when we PAID to be on the boat. As I'm writing people are trying to find their way home and this event happened 4 hours ago. This was highly disgusting of this company and I greatly encourage all people of color to disregard their service as they will gladly give away your seat so long as a white person is happy. It is very disheartening to see this kind of treatment directed towards black people in this day and age. I hope the owner sees this because it is a massive fail on your part for how the situation was handled. Those people should not have been able to get on the boat. The boat should not have been overbooked. Do your jobs better. read more

I love Newport, but getting there can be such a nightmare. Beach traffic and tourists and expensive parking fees make me avoid going in peak season. Seastreak is now my hero and I hope they stick around PVD/NP. Now in their 25th day (well, 24th on the day I went), I would have thought they had been up and running for 25 years. Everything went so smoothly, from checking in and getting my tickets to boarding. Friendly, efficient and organized. We left only slightly after 10am and arrived in Newport slightly after 11am. The ferry terminal is small but offers free parking in an attached lot, porta potties, and a small ticket station. I purchased my ticket online for no additional fees. Regular adult tickets cost 20$ for round trip but they offer various discounts for seniors and disabled individuals. They also allow you to take a bike on for free and stow it for you as you board. I sat in the upper deck, which offered amazing views of the bay. They also have seating in a covered area and have a bathroom and small bar with alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages. The seating isn't super comfortable but it was adequate. Upstairs seating fills up fast so arrive early if you want to nab a spot. The Newport ferry terminal is in the main harbor, adjacent to the downtown area. There are bathrooms as you disembark and is a quick hop over to the restaurants and shops and a quick bike ride to Ft. Adams, Ocean drive, and the mansions. I seriously think that the addition of this ferry service is the most exciting thing that has happened since I have moved to Providence. I can now easily bike from my house to India Point Park, get on the ferry and be in Newport in no time. I hope that this sticks around for many years to come, because I think that it is a great boost for RI tourism. read more

fantastic easy relaxing and scenic way to get down to Newport for a day trip. Boat is a bit older and there are no outlets, and if you are sitting on the sunny side of the inside cabin you may be hot. You can sit in the open on top if so. If you are coming from Providence would recommend taking a nonstop boat, the Bristol stop adds 35 (!) mins and on our recent trip only served 3 pax. I guess I also wish they would use both fore and aft to make disembarking and boarding faster. Love that it runs thru Columbus day, I only wish it would start the season sooner. From the dock in Newport it is a quick walk north to the Newport transit center where you can grab the free route 67 bus down past the mansions to the southern end of cliff walk. read more

I've taken the ferry from India Point Park to Newport and back twice this summer. It's around $20 per round trip ticket. The seating is pretty comfortable and the view is beautiful. The ferry was on time for all 4 rides. You can buy drinks and (limited) snacks downstairs. If you sit up top, make sure to bring a sweatshirt. With the wind it can get pretty cold. read more

Let me just say, this is my favorite day trip. Newport is absolutely beautiful, and we'd get there by bus the majority of the time. Now, since this has been added, we've used the service half a dozen times. The first week was hectic and unorganized, where there was no guarantee you'd be able to get on the ferry back. The second week, everyone was a little more calm, and there were some higher ups involves in ticket purchases. Now, we came here this week, and there is a line for reservations, and for stand bys. Making the process MUCH simpler. And you can buy these tickets right on their website! My only wish is for cosmetic things that aren't really important, but nice. We reserved this morning. Got to the location at 8.25am for the 9.30am departure. At 9.30am, a person came out of the office and simply said, I'm sorry, the trip has been cancelled we are having difficulties with the ferry. No explanation. I Stood in line and after about 30 minutes in line we were told it would take too long to individually issue refunds, we would just see a refund since no services were rendered anyway. I just called to make sure that the ferry was repaired and the trip would take place. I was told on the phone "sorry, I have no idea. You will have to find out tomorrow. I asked, if she had any idea that the ferry was out of commission today, she said "No, just check back tomorrow". So rude! I guess they figured if you want to go by ferry, they are the only game in town, why bother with customer service. read more

Although the local crew and ticket booth people were great, the centrally located call center at SeaStreak made several mistakes that disrupted my vacation and that of my friend. In order in which they occurred: 1) The first time I tried SeaStreak, I called for a reservation. The Call Center operator told me that there were so many available tickets that I didn't need one. When I got to the ticket booth later that day, however, the ferries were sold out. This was a Sunday afternoon in the summer, and that really was poor service. 2) Another time I made a reservation (a few days ago) and the ticket booth couldn't find it because the Call Center rep had so poorly spelled my name. Ticket booth attendee asked me for the emailed confirmation, but the Call Center hadn't sent it. They did, however, charge me. That part (taking the money) had gone find at the Call Center. I was with a friend so we paid in cash. Then we called the Call Center and looked up my reservation by phone. The ticket booth then refunded my money on the debit card reservation. Essentially I ended up lending Seastreak 40 dollars for 5 days, since my money wasn't going to come back for 5 days. The Call Center is very poorly run, unfortunately. However, the folks in Providence are excellent. The boat crew are great, too. It's a nice boat...but you could end up watching it sail from the end of the dock. read more

Not only are the boats unreliable but so is the staff. Two different employees said they would email me and the never did, weren't friendly at all. Don't plan your day around this boat. They suggest to arrive early to get a deck seat. We arrived 45 minutes early, waited 30 minutes to form a line to board, then 5 minutes later the boat wasn't in service that day. I wouldn't suggest it for the way they handled the situation.
