Company booked room- They called and made sure pets were allowed. Ubered there and was told they do not allow pets. Man at the service desk asked what size. Told him it's my wife and I, with our dog under 20lbs. He then proceeds to tell us they do not allow pets. To make things worse he told us to wait outside in -° weather. Knowing we had to wait for another Uber and find a different hotel. After a few minutes, I told my wife to take the dog and wait in the lobby. It was too cold for them. I have had hit and miss luck when I go to hotels in Ames - I am so glad I found this one. I was reading reviews on different sites to find one that had fairly recent reviews and good reviews at that. Honestly the reviews were okay for this one - but I paid attention to the people saying new ownership and how hard this owner was trying to present a good/safe hotel. Well this was a hit for me - check in was a little stressful but that was mostly my fault because I used a different app than usual to book my room. They were very patient with me while they were trying to help figure out if I had paid already or not (the app I normally use takes the money right away - the app I used for this one had me pay at the hotel). I appreciated how helpful and patient they were. The hotel is big and spread out but I appreciate that they try and show on a map where you are. These people were so great - my tv did not work - a previous tenant had to have disconnected the cords or something so it all had to be rebooted - the owner sat in the room and we tried multiple things. He even went back to the office to see if it was system-wide or just my room. (it was just my room but on his way back - he was watching a youtube to see about getting it back to working). He got it back. The one thing that I thought was so respectful was he sat on the floor while waiting for this - I told him that he was more than welcome to sit in the chair but I think there was a respectful choice he was making that was probably something to do with contamination if he had been working on other pieces. I was so excited about the hot tub - my experience in actually getting to enjoy hot tubs since covid has been very hit and miss (more misses than hits) not only was this one working it was one of the biggest and most comfortably I have ever been in. I really appreciated that even though the pool area is supposed to close at 10 - they were very open to leaving it open later if needed. (I had forgotten a swim suit - so I didn't get to enjoy it the first night, so the second I was determined too but the pool was so full that I waited until the last 15 minutes - but others were doing the same and they did not rush people out. Breakfast was hot and good - great continental meal - first morning I was there biscuits and sausage which honestly I am not a huge fan of but there was plenty of options. Waffles and much more. Second day - eggs and bacon if I am remember right, plus all the extras. The hotel was full the whole weekend and there was lots going on - but I never felt bothered by neighbors. I go to Ames quite often and I will definitely be hoping to stay here. read more

This is a great hotel for the money. Yes it is old but clean is important. If you are just traveling through and need a place to sleep it is perfect. We reserved early and received a very good rate. The breakfast is fine. The coffee was not bad. We received a room on the non freeway side. The freeway side may have noise. I've stayed at other Americinn hotels in the past and have been very satisfied, especially since the chain is considered a "value" hotel. The Americinn, Ames did not meet my expectations. While the staff is very friendly- an Indian family type of operation- they lack clear English communication skills and the ability to effectively manage a well-run hotel. I normally don't leave negative reviews, but I would've appreciated reading an honest review like this before choosing this hotel. Although this Americinn's rates and location are good, I cannot recommend this business. I knew we were in trouble when we recently checked in for our two night stay. The lobby was extremely warm, humid and musty. The air conditioning seemed to be off or set to a very high temp. The ceiling fans were running and many of the lobby lights were off. There were large, plastic covered rolls of what appeared to be carpet being stored out in the open. No one was at the front desk. Eventually the manager came and we checked into our room, requesting a first floor room because there are no elevators to the second floor. The manager seemed irritated, stating that the first floor was reserved for old people who couldn't manage the stairs. Eventually he relented and gave us a first floor room. Upon entering our room, we were greeted by a kind of locker room odor and the sound of a dirty dehumidifier running in the corner. The carpet felt damp. The beds seemed damp and the mattresses were thin and worn. One of the bathroom lights was burnt out. We decided to stay anyway because we were tired and wouldn't be spending much time in the room. Plus the manager charged my credit card for our full stay up front. If you want decent wireless internet service, forget it. It took several attempts to connect to it. Ookla Speedtest indicated a download speed of 2.94 Mbps and upload speed of 0.42 Mbps. (My iPhone's regular LTE data speeds were 194 Mbps down & 22.2 Mbps up.) The Hisense TVs are Roku TVs with wireless connectivity, displaying 480i image quality only. The video would often freeze, I assume, because the wireless is practically non-existent. The following day, after drinking a few cups of extremely weak coffee from the breakfast bar, I asked the staff about getting a different room because ours seemed to have possibly been flooded at one point. I was told the manager would check the room and call me later in the day. He did not call. Upon my return in the afternoon, he stated that he put a new dehumidifier in my room and that all of the rooms are damp because "this is the way it is in the U.S. during the summer." He must have referenced the summer heat in the U.S. about three times to a guy who is born and bred in the Midwest. I said that I'd never stayed in a hotel that ran dehumidifiers in the rooms. Basically, the management is too cheap to run the AC properly during the summer to keep the building comfortable. Another annoying thing was that we left our used towels on the bathroom floor to be replaced with new ones. They were not. When I called down to inquire as to why, they told me that they only service rooms once every three days. It would be nice to state this upon check in. I hate dealing with simple things like asking for fresh towels and shampoos after a long day. The last thing I'll mention is that I found a couple of bugs flitting around on the nightstand the second night... extremely small, possibly fleas. Yuck! I'm not sure why people give this place a five star rating. Either things used to be much different in the past or people have very low expectations for the hotels they stay in. Very clean, great pool ( was even offered fresh towels by our spot at the pool), and the breakfast was great. Affordable, accommodating and just overall an excellent experience. They were dodgy with us using cash and raised price after kept our deposit over 1 towel with a slight pink hue that could have been washed out was rude at customer service just because we're are young the First Gentlemen was awesome but the other female workers were rude and judgmental, gave them a chance after seeing some not so good reviews but am sad to say I agree with the negative reviews read more

Not a bad hotel at all. Not a terribly great one, but it's right off the highway, rooms are clean, and the staff is nice. It needs some fine-tuning to be a hotel I'd recommend over other options on a regular weekend, but it's not a bad place to stay if there are no other options or you get a good deal. PROS: -Great location for those who are traveling *through* Ames but don't want to go into the hustle and bustle of the city itself. The hotel is located outside of most of Ames and extremely easy to get to (a minute or two off the highway). There's a gas station down the street with a Dairy Queen/Subway in it as well as a local Mexican place right next to the hotel. -Ample parking. No fussing around with parking too much. With a secondary entrance on the opposite side of the hotel (that requires the use of a room key to access), it's pretty easy to park and get to your room no matter which side of the hotel you happen to be staying on. -Room was clean. Room service did a great job of refreshing the room during our stay as well. No complaint about the room itself. -Breakfast had a decent selection including skim milk and 2% milk. They had more than the "average" cereals and had Cocoa Puffs and Lucky Charms too. Didn't see any fresh fruits. They had a couple "warm" options too including make-your-own-waffles. Ample-enough seating in the lobby for everybody who was getting breakfast. -Staff was friendly. Had no issues with staff. CONS: -There's a pool table in the pool room. I mean....there's a pool table in the room with a swimming pool. I can't. -The hot tub had caution tape all around it and had about a foot of gross-looking, standing water. No hot tub for us, I guess. Maintenance happens, but no mention of this was made on their website or by staff when checking in. -Lack of any gym or fitness area. HOWEVER, when I talked to front desk staff about it, they said they've worked out a deal with the next-door Country Inn and Suites for guests to use the gym over there. So that's something to consider. -Tea bag I wanted to drink was out all three days I was there in the lobby. Just an empty box sitting next to all of the other tea boxes. Provided hot water had been replenished and was hot, so it's odd nobody had refilled the actual tea. -Beds squeaked. A lot. Even just with sitting on it or adjusting during the night. The running joke is that it sounded like geese squawking. It was enough to wake up the person in the other Queen bed with each adjustment, so definitely noticeable. -AC was loud when it kicked on and off - which seemed to be pretty often. It didn't bother me too much, but the soft sleeper in our party wasn't so happy about it. -Hotel only has two floors and no noticeable elevator. If you have stair issues, make sure to request a first-floor room. -Hotel doesn't *look* very high-end. It looks clean, but the decor is a bit outdated (especially in the hallways) and the lack of natural lighting with lots of brown in the hallways/lobby definitely makes it look a bit dated. Again, it's clean and doesn't have any smell or anything, but it doesn't look as gorgeous/modern as some other hotels that might be in the similar, $100-ish-a-night range. read more

The management is horrible. I booked and paid for a room months in advance as it was known there would be a few days between moving from our one home into our new home. After spending all day moving we go to check in only to find out there is a deposit needed, more than we anticipated and something NOT stated when the room was booked and paid for. When this was mentioned to hotel staff the staff insisted it was stated on the website, it is not and the website it was booked on was pulled and shown to staff that it is not stated. We left to gather the deposit, which we were initially told was $150, but when we returned with the money the same staff person then stated the deposit was $200 and they had cancelled our reservation. After a long day of moving we were left scrambling to find a place to stay! Thankfully Hotels.com took GREAT care of us, transferred us to another hotel and picked up any additional costs. Also AmericInn staff will lie to you. The "management" said it was Iowa law but the hotel we ended up at charged us $0 deposit nor asked for a card to have on file! We just stayed there this weekend because our usual hotel...Sleep Inn was booked and all the other hotels available for a "home game" were running about $200 a night by the time we booked. It seems fairy clean, but there were some orange stains by the toilet and when we checked in and someone had set the air conditioner at 60 degrees. Granted it was warm and pretty humid, but seriously. Everything felt damp or wet when we came in for the evening even through we had turned it up to 73 as soon as we got into the room that afternoon. I shit you not the next day we came back after the football game and the air had been turned down again. Even the carpet felt wet. Gross! We would have put the "do not clean" tag on the door, but there want one. I noticed they had a dehumidifier running in the hallway a few doors down. Um... Fine, turn the air on while your cleaning..I understand being a middle aged woman, but turn it back when you leave! I really wanted to use the hot tub but I was actually kind of afraid so I don't know if the pool table is still there, but like the other reviewer...wood pool table in the high humidity pool area?!? We left very early Sunday morning without eating breakfast. Both my husband and I suffer from seasonal allergies and I have asthma. We both felt like we were trying to breathe under water when we woke up on Sunday with constant sneezing and coughing and just wanted to leave. And yes, the beds are not very comfortable and the do squeak every time you move. read more

I put this exact post on Google Reviews. If you're considering staying here, please read. The manager's response on Google itself is unreal. I normally don't leave negative reviews, but I just thought it would be helpful for others to know what happened when we stayed here. While staying here on a Friday-Sunday, my 7 year old son's Nintendo Switch was lost on Saturday. We asked at the front desk and they said no Switches were found. That same day, through the parental controls on the Switch, I saw someone was using it and downloaded Fortnite, Fall Guys, and Rocket League on the device, so we knew someone else had it. Before we left Sunday, we asked the front desk and they said there were no Switches returned. We don't live in Ames, so we contacted the police about the matter. About 3 weeks later, the Ames police visited the hotel and the Switch was somehow found. We heard 2 different stories: the Switch was found by a maid while cleaning and also that the Switch was found by a customer in the parking lot. The manager told my husband it would cost $25 to go to the UPS Store to ship the Switch back to us, plus the cost of shipping and handling as well. We just had a family friend get it. After posting this exact post on Google, the manager reached out a few times to my husband (my husband was in a conference and couldn't answer) and left a comment back on my Google review. In the comment, the manager actually admitted his son had the Switch and then blamed us not getting the Switch back when we asked (twice) on hotel miscommunications between his staff... I couldn't believe it. I have no idea how the Switch was even "lost" in the first place, but we finally got the truth after posting a Google review. We wouldn't have gotten my 7 year old son's Switch back without the help of the Ames police 100%. Please be cautious with your personal belongings if you decide to stay here! read more

Stayed there in July, not a very clean hotel and needs lots of updates both the outside and inside. My room had a piece of metal which was suppose to keep the bed from moving off the base sticking out and caught my ankle on it told the front desk about it said they didn't have any other rooms available and basically told me to live with it. Later told the assistant manager about it they asked me to send an email with a picture of my wound, I did and now she won't answer my emails. Do I need a lawyer? read more

This is four star for the price you pay to have a suite with a door that closes in between the two rooms. Both have televisions. It isn't fancy. No elevator to the second floor. It has a lot of outlets which is handy with all of the electronic gadgets that need to recharge at night. Beds sleep fine but not luxurious. We've stayed at this hotel in the past and always had a great stay. However I reserved a room yesterday for my family of 6 and arrived after a 5 hour car ride to see a sign near the check in desk saying the pool was closed. I was pretty mad, given they never sent an email ahead of time warning us, and after a long car ride we were banking on the 4 kids being able to burn off energy in the pool. Joel at the front desk was awesome and called a nearby hotel with a pool and we wound up staying in a different hotel nearby. He went above and beyond to fix a tough situation, and it made me want to remain an Americinn customer in the future vs me being forever bitter about the situation. I was at this hotel May 17th, 2018. We had booked 2 rooms for the 17th through the 21st. We booked adjoining rooms but when we got there they didn't have adjoining rooms anymore. We were told that someone had extended their stay so we got bumped a couple doors farther down the hall. I decided that was fine and asked to see the room. I walked in and on first glance the room seemed fine. But when I got to the bed I was horrified. I pulled back the pillows and under them on the bedskirt the bed was filthy!!! Hair, stains, bodily fluids. I would not sleep in those beds. I went to the front desk and politely asked if she would come take a look at the beds with me. She did. Her response was that the bedskirts are not cleaned as they are a pain to do so. And if I wanted she could change the bedskirt but I would have to help her as she couldn't do it by herself!! Well I was not about to touch the pee stains, or the large white stains (I actually have photos but there isn't a place to post them) either so I just asked for my money back and we booked into a Best Western farther down the road. I highly recommend looking closely at things before staying here! read more
