    Nachos
    Mark W.

Alpine is crawling with tourists this weekend. My usual lunch places were already crowded at 11:30 today. So, like an idiot, I went to Amigos (which was empty) for lunch. I ordered nachos. The waitress brought them quickly, but unfortunately, they were served at room temperature. There was no actual cheese on them, just a somewhat runny, room temperature white liquid, cold pinto beans, guacamole, sour cream, a plentiful amount of black olives, and pickled jalapenos. I have had better nachos at a truck stop, where they at least are served hot. This is the 3rd time I have tried Amigos and the 3rd disappointment. I guess I give up on them.

    Classic cheeseburger. Fries were bomb

Stopped in here after searching for a place to grab a quick bite on our way to the McDonald Observatory. Good burger. Great service.

Slow service. Bad food. They ran out of cheese and brought me a different meal since they couldn't make quesadillas.

We were looking for a nice place to have dinner while staying in Alpine, TX. This fit the bill!…read more The restaurant is in a yellow house with an "R" at the top. There was an American Flag and a Texas flag flying out front. We walked in and waited for someone to greet us and seat us. After we were at our table, drink orders were taken. When our water was brought out, we were also given some Honey Pecan Biscuits with butter. They were warm and I liked the pecans in it! Hubby & I shared everything. We started with a cup of Jalapeño and Cilantro Soup. It's a cream based soup. I couldn't detect much of any heat from the Jalapeños and the cilantro was pretty much hidden. Maybe a sprinkling of fresh cilantro on top would have made it more pronounced. It also needed to be served hot. We then got the 14oz Ribeye which came with mashed potatoes & green beans. This was a great plate of food! It came out hot! The person who brought it out waited until we cut into it to see if it was acceptable. We've never had any staff person do that for us before! It was a little under done on one side, but the other was perfect. We almost finished the plate. It was delicious! Lastly, we got the Chocolate Bread Pudding Tamale. It comes wrapped in a corn husk that it is cooked in. You remove it and eat the bread pudding. It was gummy in a good way, as hubby described it. It needed the fresh strawberries & ice cream that came on the plate. We really enjoyed our dinner! Our server, Jordan, was very efficient & made it a nice experience! We probably won't travel this way again, but if we did, we would definitely return!

I ordered the chicken tortilla soup and the smoked quail. The soup was served with the garnishes in the bowl and the broth poured from a kettle at the table, which was a fun presentation. The quail was also well plated and tasty. Overall, I enjoyed both the food and the presentation. If you're in Alpine or passing through (like I was on the way back from Big Bend NP), this is a great place to stop and grab a meal.

It's a comfortable place and the bartender welcomed us as we walked through the door. I noticed that she welcomed everyone as they walked in. As I said, it is a comfortable and welcoming place with a better than decent bar. We sat at the bar and had a hand-made margarita with all fresh, in-house made ingredients. Bartender asked what tequila we preferred. They use fresh squeezed lime juice and in-house made triple sec. The rita was delicious. One of the best I have had. The young lady tending bar was very social, considerate, and knowledgeable. I cannot recall her name, but she hails from Nebraska and her Great Plains upbringing shines. The whole thing was so enjoyable that we will be back in a day or two for another rita and will try the food. They also have live music on weekends. Looking forward to returning. EDIT: Returned on August 2nd to listen to music and eat. Neon Leon was the performer. He is a Texas Singer/Songwriter of sorts who plays both electric and acoustic guitar (with a pickup). He was really enjoyable and had quite a repertoire including some very good songs he wrote. Just him and his guitar and that is all that was needed. Several locals were there listening and providing some great conversation. This is a great place. We tried shrimp on pita bread and it was flavorful and delicious. The menu is simple and food is well presented.
