Fort Davis is a quaint little town a few miles north of Alpine. The Blue Mountain Bar & Grill is next door to the Limpia Hotel. There is a decent size dining room, a nice bar area with high top tables, and tables outside on the patio. We stopped there to grab something to eat on the way to the Star Party at the McDonald Observatory. Not being very hungry, we split the Rio Grande Brisket Taco while sitting at the bar. The brisket was flavorful and plentiful; delicious. The bartender was busy, yet still attentive. The food orders we saw all looked good and plentiful. I wish we could have stayed a while longer, but we had a 20 minute drive to the observatory. Unfortunately, cloud cover pretty much ruined the Star Party, however, we were pleasantly surprised that a refund was offered. I highly recommend a stop at the Blue Mountain and check-out Fort Davis. read more

We stoped in after a long days of work. It's a rainy summer Friday, we decided to give Blue Mountain Bar & Grill a try. This place is nice, cozy atmosphere, attentive staff, and great food. They have a dinning room or you can order to go at the bar. We used the scan code to order off the new updated menu, I didn't mind at all. Once order was placed, our food arrived promptly. Of course I ordered the Old Fashioned. 7 out 10. Not bad. For dinner my dad and I had the Chicken Fried Chicken and my nephew had the double cheeseburger. We cleaned out plates. Food was great. Last night we had the unfortunate experience of dining at Blue Mountain. At first it seemed like a nice atmosphere with a busy bar. The gentleman who greeted and seated was nice enough. We didn't realize it wasn't a full service restaurant. You scan a QR code to order on your own from an uninspiring menu. No one to answer any questions. No way to request anything like an extra plate. Upon ordering you're encouraged to pay and tip before you get your food. If you want a cocktail go to the bar and get it yourself. As all the other patrons who arrived later than us were already eating I flagged down someone and they found our order. They delivered our overcooked wings floating in a least an entire bottle of sauce. The $13 Ceasar salad was the size of a side salad. Didn't matter, it too was flooded with dressing and was inedible. The mediocre French fries were the high point of the meal. The requested extra plate didn't come, the ranch dressing didn't come. No napkins or cutlery until I got up to find it myself. Second time here while on a four day stay to visit a good friend. Their service is top notch and food is very good We had Gouda fries for a starter and they were hot, covered with cheese and smoked brisket. Really good. I had the chicken fried chicken and it was delicious while the rest of my party had the lemon pepper chicken wings which ended up as three piles of bones. They also have bourbon sauce cheesecake for dessert that is over the top good. Tonight I had the chocolate cake and although it isn't made in house, it is very chocolatey which it should be. Fort Davis is far from civilization so prices here are closer to Austin or San Antonio than a small town but this establishment is worth your time and money. BTW they have an awesome 70's and 80's soundtrack playing at just the right volume. read more

Highly unexpected good meal. This little town rolled up the sidewalks at 5:30 and I was left with 2 choices. On my way to the McDonald observatory, I planned on dinner in this town as a layup before heading up the mountain. I didn't think about it being small-town Texas in March on Friday at 5:30! Everything closed except Blue Mountain Bar and something similar across the street. I walked across the street first and decided it didn't feel right. So, came here and instead of waiting for a table, sat at the bar. That was a great choice. It was happy hour,the bartender served me a great drink and took our order expeditiously. A women's basketball game on the overhead tv combined with some people watching, rounded out the experience. Then the unexpected. Based on a few Yelp reviews I had lowered my food expectations. So, I was pleasantly surprised when our dinner was 4-star. sometimes you really have to read between the Yelp lines. I wouldn't hesitate to dine here at the bar again. We were on a road trip and decided to stop over and get some food at Fort Davis. Blue Mountain has very limited menu, QR code order only. But the bad part for us was it took over an hour to get 3 burgers!!!! And the server told us that kitchen did shut down for an hour so th chef can "catch up".... What does that even mean? While people actually sitting at tables waiting on their PAID orders!!! I guess that's why they make you prepay for all the food before anything comes out. Would NOT recommend this to anyone!!! read more

This was a stop on our little road trip. Happy it was open since our original choice wasn't. It's a lovely place that feels really homey and we sat outside. Service was prompt and friendly. Decided to get the extra chicken piece and it is HUGE. It was fine for me since I was sharing but no one probably needs the extra piece. It was just ok - not particularly flavorful or different. The taters and beans were good but not great as well. If you're staying closeby (I was a less than 5 minute walk away) you'll be fine stopping by. read more

So..... let me preface that this review is totally unrelated to the Hotel Limpia (see my review for that). I read that Blue Mountain did not make reservations- we actually weren't that hungry, but decided to file in with the crowd because we had an hour to kill. The menu is pretty solid- but for instance, the steak alone is $50- prices are inflated. Being that this is the only true sit down nicer restaurant in the small town there was a significant older crowd waiting for the doors to open and apparently willing to pay these prices, as we were. We decided to sit in the bar area and order off the same menu before heading to the Star Party at the observatory. We ordered drinks and chips and queso strait away along with a burger. Simple right? No! The chips and queso came out about ten minutes later. It was good, but imagine cooking with grandma and taking out the measuring cups. The serving was about 3/4th cup of queso for $12. Our burger took 45 minutes to come out. Couples came in and out while we waited. The man next to us who sat down at least five minutes after us had ordered and eaten his steak before we were served. Anyways- the server told us several times somebody is bringing our order out next. I asked for the check before we were served to pay for drinks and chips and LEAVE. . Two minutes later our burger came out and she asked me if I had paid. I told her no because I didn't think our food was coming. When she realized the absurd situation she said she would adjust the bill- maybe appetizer on the house?-take off the burger? NO - just took off $3. Having been a server, I found it in me to leave the $3 as a tip. If she would've taken $12 chips off, that would have been her tip on a $35 tab. PS- fries were dripping in oil- I had to dab them with a napkin. Anyways, we will never go back, but here's a good suggestion. On the other side of the street a little way down is a little grocery store that serves delicious bbq sandwiches. Grab a meal to go and bring it back to the Hotel Limpia to enjoy at the outdoor patio tables. read more

We had several amazing meals here during our weeklong stay in Fort Davis! Our party of four tried almost everything on the menu. Favorites were the country fried chicken with jalapeño gravy and mashed potatoes, and the brisket tacos were excellent. Three in our group had a mushroom Swiss burger with fries recommended by our server... they enjoyed it so much they went back and ordered the same again! Excellent staff, very friendly and attentive. There are limited dining options in Fort Davis TX and from the outside, we thought this looked like a good place to sit down and have a nice dinner, nope: 1. Limited menu, 2. One order was chicken tenders- they were not cooked fresh, lukewarm, soggy cold French fries, 3. 2nd order was the smash burger that consisted of two very flat burgers, two thinly sliced pieces of tomato's, onions, & pickles, with one small piece of lettuce. NOTE~ the waitress didn't write down any of our orders and brought me a chicken plate of some kind. She returned it to the kitchen and my burger and fries were out in five minutes! It wasn't freshly prepared and again, the fries were less than desirable. 4. The 3rd order was a caprese salad, and that was the only decent meal served. There is a little market/deli up the street.....go there....spend your money and time wisely. read more

Absolutely the worst restaurant I've ever . We placed our order for an a and a grilled chicken sandwich. About 40 minutes later my wife's Smashburger showed up and they advised us the wrong number and took . About 15 minutes my grilled chicken sandwich finally showed up. The chicken was so tough. You could barely cut it with a knife. I sent it back and asked for a Smashburger instead. Meanwhile, they finally brought my wife's Smashburger. I really all it was was a double cheeseburger regular burger patties. Way overcooked. I'm still waiting on mine to arrive and finally it does about 20 minutes after my wife gets hers. I getthe same burger as just a plain old double cheeseburger. We spent two hours there trying to get two hamburgers. What a joke I do not recommend this place at all. read more

Terrible, terrible food. Incredibly bad service. Charged almost twice the price of the menu on their website. Cartoonishly bad food is just the beginning of the story here. I almost never leave bad reviews for restaurants, but everything about this was so horrible I need to say something. Beyond being the absolute worst food I have ever gotten from a restaurant, the manager's response when we pointed it out was to lie repeatedly. The hamburgers we ordered were so burnt that they were inedible. The fries were soaked in some disgusting smelling oil. The caesar salad was edible, but absolutely pathetic for the price - a few leaves of romaine with a mist of dressing and stale croutons. Our friends' food was equally terrible, but they are writing their own reviews. When our friends went to pay and get the food, we were charged almost twice the prices that were on the restaurant's website. The bill was 0ver $300 for what should have been about $150 based on their own website. When I talked to the manager, she argued that the prices on their website were correct and then lied about several other things regarding the service our friends received when picking up the food. I have worked in many restaurant, my wife is a chef and we know many restaurant owners. I don't criticize restaurants lightly because I know it is a difficult business. This experience was beyond bad. It was so terrible that if it were in a sitcom nobody would believe it. The Hotel Limpia is a wonderful place. We have been to the Blue Mountain Bar and Grill in the past and had excellent food. So when we were spending a night at the Indian Lodge with friends we ordered from here to take out. The manager and chef from this day were the worst I've ever experienced. This is a great way to put a restaurant out of business. read more

There aren't a lot of dinner options in Ft. Davis, but this is the best of them. Despite being closed on Monday night when their website said closed on Tuesday, we went back on Tuesday night and they were open. We're glad we stopped, as the food was very good. Service was average-paced, and the food all seemed to be made in-place and not pre-made. Chips with quest and salsa appetizer was excellent with nice warm salsa that was nice and thick. Quest was excellent. I had the chicken fried chicken with Brussels sprouts and mashed potatoes. Chicken was superb, Brussel sprouts were really, really good, and mashed potatoes very good. I would order this all night long. My wife had the brisket taco appetizer for dinner. While they were good, they were really spicy-hot, and she could only eat two, so think about that one. Inside dining space was very nice, and surprisingly quiet. Outdoor eating area was really nice also, but we were just a bit too tired today for that. Great place to go in Ft. Davis, just check signage if your driving by ahead of time. If we ever come back, we will be going here for dinner. read more

Had a wonderful dinner experience the night we arrived in Fort Davis. We were staying at the Butterfield across the street so we just walked over. It was a beautiful evening so we asked to be seated in the patio area outside. Our waiter, Dev, was super friendly and attentive to us throughout our meal. I had the chicken enchiladas and my wife had the brisket tacos. Both were excellent. I ordered avocado as a side to my enchiladas and it was a half of a large avocado sliced up. Was not overly impressed with the food. Food did not come out as the menu listed and pasta was under cooked. for the price of $26 the Portion size was very small. Some other food establishments across street were excellent. There is still a staff shortage due to COVID but the staff are very friendly and tried their best. Kind of average food in a lonely spot served by staff that try super hard to do a great job. They definitely get a +1 Star for the effort if not the execution. I was a long way from big city, tired and the weather further anchored me so I was just entirely grateful for a meal in the conditions. When I say conditions, I mean an electrical strike just an hour earlier pounded into the wall of the building next to our hotel. It seems to have fried the main internet control box to the entire town so those areas with power didn't have internet. I was floored how little business can transact these days without internet. Right after the internet went kaput, we sat down. We were told "so sorry, no internet so we can't take orders or take money." Fortunately, I had cash on hand in every denomination so I begged them to make me a drink and chips. No need for complex ordering for chips/dips. A lot more conversations with bartender, host, waiter, and even the bus boy and they eventually took our order. They then found out that there would be no internet soon so they shut down operations. Wow! No longer can places function without the internet. Lucky for us, we had the entire restaurant to ourselves and they even agreed to make one meal for us. The one and only for the evening. Boy did I feel special! By the time we were done, they sent everyone home but we were down to the waiter. It wasn't the best meal in my life but I did give the largest tip ever! I was VERY grateful. They were operating sub-par. Your mileage may very well be improved, but here's what I had. I got the three way chips. Chips looked funky & cool but were just ok. Some bag, somewhere. The salsa was SO sweet and thin it seemed like it was cut to cheapen it. The queso was worse. It ran like water. The guacamole was super limey. If this was their "normal" style, I highly recommend a pass. Given the conditions, who knows? I then had the chicken fried steak which was in line with the chips appetizer. Maybe a step up. A solid 3 in normal conditions. Mashed potatoes were better than the steak and the carrots in sugar solution were good for a sample. If desperate, this will be a good place. One of two places to eat dinner in ft. Davis. Due to "low staffing" in general this town has little to offer any more with the exception of an amazing climate, beautiful small town charm and close proximity to Balmorhea state park, ft. Davis state park and the McDonald observatory. The food was decent, go with the burger, you can never go wrong with that, right? Prices are compatible with every where else anymore. If you stay at the hotel Limpia be sure to mention it for your 10% discount, or bring PLENTY of sandwich stuff, fresh fruit, veggies, chips, and your own snacks. Oh they were also completely out of dessert the Saturday night. You can make reservations and eating outside is an option too, always my favorite. We chose this place because it looked like the best one to have a nice dinner during our first visit to charming Fort Davis. Beautiful location inside and outside. Though having umbrellas for all the tables would definitely help keeping them clean since they are under a gorgeous giant tree... and there are a lot of birds. Dinner took about one hour to be served. We thought, they are busy and good food takes time to be made. While waiting, I received my cocktail drink and it was definitely not what was described in the menu. The food finally arrived: overcooked linguini, a couple of champignons, definitely not the "local mushrooms" I expected. The sauce tasted like cream and tomato sauce, very tart and bland. The Cesar salad was wilted and the dressing was some sort of liquid version of sour cream. Then the expensive salmon... overly salted and served with a pile of brown rice, not properly cooked. The vegetables of the day needed to be requested afterwards because apparently it was either/or with the veggies!! (Not what the menu said). The manager was very understanding and comped us for all the trouble... Honestly, she was the best part of the experience. What a pity!
