My husband and friend meet there about 1 time per month because we love it. It's quick, consistently good tasting food. We typically order dosa, thali, chole batura. All very yummy. Paper plates, get your own water, no ice, plastic forks but we use our hands for the most part. Place is simple and you go up and get your own food when it's ready. The taste doesn't compare to restaurants back in India so I'm comparing the taste just with what you get here in the US. They're a completely vegetarian restaurant without booze. It's just a cafe set aside in an Indian market. It doesn't look like much, and they use all disposable plates and utensils, which I think is unfortunate. You'll find gruff employees sporadically manning the counter. However, a fair comparison for this place is not to some fine dining establishment, but to a fast food takeout joint. In that niche, Amma is a winner. This place offers a menu that seemed a bit wider than the other location in Vienna, and I finally took the chance to try a Jaipur paneer dosa, a large lentil-based crepe with spiced cheese filling. Honestly, I am not a big fan of their sambar (the soup used for dipping), but the dosa itself was crispy and the filling aromatic and hearty. Even this rather substantial item was under $10 with tax; everything here is cheap, vegetarian, and delicious. They haven't marked their menu for vegan or gluten-free, but given that trace ingredients may be present, they do have options for both. Of the twenty or so people that were eating in this small space while I was there, I was the only non-Asian, which is both a good sign (in that it must be decent food) and a bad thing (in that most of America still has not discovered the exciting world of South Indian cuisine). Some years ago, there was apparently an Amma Vegetarian Kitchen in the heart of Georgetown. I know rent is high in this town, but I really wish they'd come back to the District. We ordered the idly which are steamed rice and chicpea pancakes. They were excellent! This food is very autrhentic and if you don't mind the basic ambiance, you will get a terrific meal and value. I'm so glad I found this place! Giving four stars as the saag paneer was exceptional, the chickpea curry was lovely and warm, but we didn't really take to the flavors of the other curries we ordered. When trying to order over the phone, I was hindered by the accent, "We only have [insert four curries here] today", so I said I'll take one of each and one more saag and one more lentils! All were served with rice, and for the six curries take away, we spent $45. One of the other reviews said a curry serves two... for us ravenous folk, we had one each and were stuffed. Still such a deal! As a vegetarian, I will definitely bookmark this place for the future. I'd love to have tried their curried cauliflower (maybe it'll be served next time). The saag was so lovely and smooth, cooked differently to others that I've tried (I have a feeling this was a southern Indian restaurant as they served dosas), but am wholly pleased with the exchange. Never visit this place!! They serve spoiled food and respond very rudely when you raise it with them... So, here is what happened. We (I and my husband) went in this evening and ordered a Dosa, and the Potato Bhaji that is served with it did not smell right and I took a bite anyway. It was indeed spoiled/stale and I spat it out. I raised it with the cashier/manager, and his response was "This is what we have and this what they have been serving and it is good" and refused to even consider what we are saying. Then another one of their guys joins in and he was no different. Luckily for us, there was another couple who had ordered Dosa and we spoke to them and found out that theirs's was no different. Now we have some support and its not just us!!! Now all of us went together and demanded that they refund the cost and did not budge until they relented and refunded all of us. Never going back to this place!! I wish I could give a negative rating.. I will try to spread this message to everyone in my circle and make sure that they are aware of what this place really is like and avoid ruining their health and deal with the rude service on top of that. read more

This Cafe is attached to the aditi spice depot grocery! The Cafe is so neatly maintained,quick service and much better overall that the Vienna Amma kitchen! We got the idli, dosa and pooris! This is one of two vegetarian Indian restaurants in Herndon and it's definitely the better. Most of the customers seemed to be enjoying Dosas but I opted to try the Samosas, Chloe, Dal, and Saag Paneer. I was shocked to get a bill for under $30 considering that some of the horrible Indian restaurants around here charge twice as much for the same dishes. I got a choice of rice or bread with each entree and the portions were large enough for two very hungry adults. Everything was seasoned well and I especially enjoyed the samosas. I will be glad to come back here for quick takeout and days when I NEED Indian food in my belly. read more

This is my go to place for Indian vegetarian food. It's literally right across the street from my office, so anytime I'm craving some healthy, cheap and quick vegetarian dishes, I drop on by. Amma's attached to a grocery store and upon entering through the little screen door, you're greeted with very low key, nondescript cafe. It's also usually really busy, full of Indian people. That's when you know it's legit. I usually get Amma's feast. For a little under $10, you get 6 little containers of basically all their curries and veggie dishes, including the sour yogurt and sweet dessert with taro and raisins. You're also treated to a little plastic cup of a very tart chutney (I think it's tamarind rinds or something). It packs a sour kick but balances well with the other rich side dishes. Their Dosas are also awesome. They're crispy and loaded with potato filling and come with a nice lentil dipping side. I'm pretty sure I fucked up most of my descriptions of the food but I just go and get what looks good. It all looks good and tastes fantastic. If ever in Reston/Herndon, stop on by. I usually have the lunch specials and today's was biriyani with papadum, yogurt and orange peel chutney. All of the food is homemade and my plate was delicious. They serve in styrofoam (why? Please switch to cardboard!) bowls or plates with plastic cutlery on trays. While this is not encouraging, the food is great and the prices are low ($6.99 for my special). read more

Love this place! I recently ate here for the first time about a week ago and I couldn't say enough good things about the quality of food. My girlfriend friend and I got pav bhaji, Aloo tikki chaat, and idly sambar on our first visit. All of these dishes were deep with excellent flavor, extremely fresh, and served piping hot. But they serve good quality fresh food. I have been to this place few times and they were consistent in the food quality. Their 'sambaar' was always steaming hot and always smelled fresh.
