We came for dinner today and got lucky because the Sunday only special (Chicken Parm) was available so we ordered that and I decided to switch up my usual to the Spaghetti. My boyfriend loved the Chicken Parm and it comes on top of Vodka Pappardelle which was also delicious and the Spaghetti wasn't too heavy even though it was cream based. We came on a Sunday night for dinner and they had two jazz musicians playing in the corner. Super cool vibe, nice interior, and good service. I got the Pesce dish and it was really good. I was debating on getting the chicken parmageddon which is their Sunday night specialty but will probably try it next time. I will say, the jazz music got a little bit loud at times, so they either need to turn it down a little bit or you can ask to be seated in the back. Ammazzacaffe is truly one of the better Italian restaurants and a hidden gem. My take? To preface, I'm not a big fan of Torrisi (overhyped and too many flavors being mixed), Misi went down the Carbone route and has gone downhill in the past 1-2 years, and Rezdora was really delicious, but they skimp on portions. L'artusi also in my opinion is decent, but doesn't have the wow factor to make me come back. I also tend to lean more toward authentic Italian tastes with less salt and el dente pasta (Alfredo also doesn't exist in Italy...) So, really, Ammazzacafe executed well in regard to portions and being generous. Their sauce with pastas was well seasoned, flavorful, and their pasta perfectly el dente with quality pasta. So far for Italian food, I recommend Don Angie, a Pasta Eater, Piccolo Cucina, a Pasta Bar, Rezdora, Forma Pasta, and Ammazzacaffe. Thankfully was able to get a walk-in seat at the bar on a Saturday night. It got quite crowded just after we had arrived, so we were lucky. However, the back area is much quieter, so definitely try to get a reservation in advance. The food was great and we were blown away by the pancetta / pork belly appetizer. Wish we had more! The chicken entree was cooked so well, and was super juicy even though it was chicken breast. We thought the vongole special would have linguine or some sort of pasta, but it just came with clams, so we'll have to go back to try the pastas. The toast that came with it was burnt, but the host was receptive to the feedback and brought us fresh bread. Since we sat at the bar, the bartenders were busy both taking food orders from the people at the counter but also drinks for the whole restaurant. I had a wonderful time at this unique restaurant. Originally my friends and I were in the area for a different spot and we changed our mind last minute to come into this place. I definitely do not regret it! The first thing I noticed was the sign allowing pups which I absolutely loved. The place looked very quaint but classy at the same time. The aesthetic was not overwhelming which I enjoyed because it made it cozy for family and friends to get together and talk! The bathrooms were very clean and the staff was very professional and friendly. We sat in the back area which had a chello and trumpet player, totally amazing! A nice amount of sunlight came through the front window. Although patrons are seated close together, I never felt boxed in. Came with my date on a Sunday evening, particularly for the live jazz from 6:30-9pm. It was nice to have but we were sat upfront directly next to it so it did become very loud at times. I would recommend asking to be sat in the back if you're looking for a more intimate vibe like I was. Very pretty food presentation. I'm not a huge Italian cuisine fan but I did appreciate the quality. We also got the roasted beets, which did not disappoint. Don't expect any of the appetizers to really fill you up, but they are all incredibly flavorful and fun. All of their pasta is made fresh in house (and you can tell, it's high quality). We got the gemelli verde, the chicken parm, and the cavatelli. Some folks might be quick to assume Ammazzacaffè is some kind of play on words to suggest an "Amazing Cafe" but it's actually an Italian term for a miniature glass with some liquor to mask the taste of coffee. (#1) No one should be masking the taste of the food here because everything is tasty. Add in some excellent service, intimate vibe, and overall quality experience and this is how 5 star reviews get written. The place is quaint with a sexy bar, intimate seating, and a really killer outdoor space. I had the pleasure of attending a special event in the back and enjoyed every minute of it. The staff was on it for every course and was good about directing guests to the back. They were quick to refill drinks, wines, and keep the place looking ship shape while they transitioned for the next course. Every item I sample, I enjoyed immensely. The gramiga, torcia, and agnolotti pastas were fresh and tasty with every bite. Folks who love a bolognese option would appreciate the garganelli, as well as the reginette which features a pork ragu. Bonus points for scoring their campanelle nero, which is their special squid ink based pasta. From their creamy and delectable burrata to their polpette meatballs, I don't think there's a dish where one can really go wrong. The sea trout tartare is an interesting option, as is their sunchoke hazelnut pesto. Their barbarbietole is a summer palate pleaser with roasted beets, smoked ricotta, pistaachio, and pickled fig. Their coppa is a roasted pork collar ($35) but it is still not as mighty as the anatra ($42), a dry aged duck that is their most expensive entree. While folks might love the pollo ($32) chicken breast, I think most everyone else will appreciate the pesce ($37) grilled branzino or the manzo ($40) braised short rib. The latter is so good that it's hard to call it a shared dish when I can easily kill it all on my own. Finish off the meal with one of their extremely extensive amaro + dessert selection. Amazzacaffè was in a word: delicious. All of the pasta is made in house and is absolutely so fresh and incredible--you have to try at least one dish while you're here because of how well it's made! The meatball appetizer was also just a chefs kiss moment--the basil pesto sauce is something I could eat every day and never get tired of. For dessert we got the yuzu basque cheese which was perfect in every bite. Each cocktail was also SO well balanced and I loved that they have the option to add a caviar bump to any drink. I also loved that they had they option for a fernet flight which is incredibly rare to find honestly. As for service--I saw several reviews mentioning has service--but I experienced quite the opposite. All waitstaff were incredible kind, attentive, and fast and made us some amazing recommendations when we asked. Some of the best service I have ever had! Inside the place was absolutely adorable and a lovely and fun vibe great for friends or a date night. I almost left off a star only because of the acoustics inside--this place is LOUD. We had to yell through most of the meal honestly. This is because of the tin ceilings, high ceilings, hardwood floors, and hard walls...there is nothing in place to absorb sound and that made for a very load restaurant. They have indoor dining and an enclosed patio for those who want somewhat of an outside dining experience. The restaurant itself was fairly roomy, but if you have a large group, be sure to make reservations. Foodwise, we wanted to order the meatballs called the polpette. However, they ran out of it, so we decided to order the burrata. The burrata tasted great with the basil and eggplant mixed together. The main dish that I ordered for myself was the gnochette. This was my first time at this restaurant, and I came with a friend. The experience was awful. The host was nice and welcoming, but the manager and waitress were both rude and dismissive. We were nothing but sweet and respectful, yet it was clear we were being treated differently from other guests. We noticed other tables being greeted warmly and helped right away, while we were ignored and spoken to with attitude. The atmosphere felt racist and uncomfortable. They also asked us how much we'd tip, and proceeded to watch us to see if we'd tip that amount. As two women of color, that was a major microaggression. I was most excited about the pastas, but my favorite dish of the evening was actually the burrata, which was served with a spiced eggplant chutney that brought out the best in the burrata's creaminess. Upon entry, great vibe and a very cozy feel to the restaurant but once seated we were practically knocking elbows with our neighbors and part involved in their conversations because of how tightly the tables were fitted. Service however was great and super efficient. A little rushed too I would say but not overbearing at any point, so I appreciate that. Breakdown of our order: Pancetta (4.5/5): loved the char and chew on this log of pancetta. The Agro Dolce sauce reminded me of tamarind sauces that I have had on Indian Chaats. I would absolutely order this again. It had fabulous flavors and all the right textures. Agnolotti (3.5/5): while this is a fan favorite and my boyfriend really enjoyed it, personally something didn't gel too well with me about this. The texture, mouth-feel and initial taste were all decent but the aftertaste was a little bit like detergent to me. I like smooth and silky ricotta more personally so the inside was grainy due to the walnuts which was contrary to my personal liking. I would have liked for the walnut to have still retained some bit or texture in the pesto rather than be mushy but then again, my boyfriend really enjoyed it so I may just be a tough critic on this particular item. Garganelli (4/5): liked this a lot more than I expected. The cook on the pasta was wonderful and the bolognese had the perfect balance of meatiness and tangy-ness from the tomato rich sauce. The addition of crispy rosemary on top was very much appreciated too. Sangiovese (4.5/5): closest resemblance to a Cab Sauv that I was seeking. This one was crisp, well bodied and paired well with the rest of the food. Chocolate Panna Cotta (4/5): texture was grainier than I originally expected from an Panna Cotta but the chocolate throughout the dish was great quality and the dish was perfectly balanced with the sour cherry. Loved how the dessert was not too sweet, a little bitter from the rich cocoa, tarty from the cherries and crunchy with the hazelnut pieces- so this order made sure that we ended our meal on a nice velvety textured note. Great ambiance and they were very accommodating as we arrived an hour and a half early. Food was tasty but not mind blowing, my fault as I had very high expectations. But what really knocked my rating down several notches was the server. Can't remember her name but she gave off a very strong vibe that she would rather be anywhere else but there. I went to Ammazzacaffe for the first time in September, and I absolutely loved it. It was so great that I went back again the next month. In those two visits, I've tried over half the menu. The space is dimly lit, romantic, with seating in the front, in the back past the kitchen, and in a large backyard area. Service is good. Drinks are also great, with a large selection of amaros. The first time I went, I sat in the backyard, which was really nice. The second time, I sat in the back indoor area. I have tried the following dishes: Calamari (squid ink mostarda, black garlic (5/5): Very tasty. Comes on a stick, with two pieces. It was well cooked, and the squid ink mostarda was a nice addition. Lattuga (gem lettuce, bagna cauda, lemon, Parmigiano, bottarga) (5/5): I love this salad. It is large, great for sharing. The dressing is excellent, and the lettuce is so fresh and crisp. This is a must order. Crudo (hamachi, yuzu, fennel, sancho pepper) (4/5): This was a good and interesting crudo, swimming in a sea of sauce. The hamachi was fresh and went well with the yuzu flavoring. Tartare (sea trout, caponata verde, umeboshi) (5/5): I really liked this sea trout. It was dressed really interestingly, with both a fresh / herbal and pickled flavor to it. It came with crisp breadsticks, which were really nice. Burrata (3/5): This dish was fine. It wasn't the best burrata I've had, but definitely not bad. I probably would not order it again. Quadrotti (roasted duck ravioli, Fontina, Vin Cotto) (4/5): A nice, rich duck ravioli. The filling was tasty, but the pasta was a little thick for my taste. Gemelli Verde (maitake mushroom, spinach, goat cheese) (4/5): Very rich and tasty vegetarian pasta. The goat cheese was ample, and made the sauce pretty thick. Agnolotti (ricotta, black truffle, walnut pesto, aged balsamic) (4.5/5): This was very good. The filling was savory and sweet, rich but not too heavy. I enjoyed it quite a bit. Spaghetti (Bottarga di Muggine, Piave, preserved lemon) (4/5): I really enjoyed this spaghetti bottarga. It is definitely rich, cheesy, but tasty. I ordered it both times I went to Ammazza. Ondine (lump crab, scampi butter, plum tomato, squid ink bread crumb) (5/5): Absolutely love this pasta. It is so good, with an ample amount of crab. The pasta was cooked perfectly, and I loved the bread crumb addition. If you like seafood, this is a must order. Pesce (grilled Branzino, cauliflower, roasted grape, almond, verjus) (5/5): I loved this dish. The fish was well-cooked, but on top of that, the accompaniments were so interesting. The grapes really added an interesting flavor, and the cauliflower was amazing. I would highly recommend this dish. Vairhona Chocolate Pannacotta (4.5/5): Very tasty chocolate dessert. Tiramisu (4/5): A good tiramisu. Yuzu Cheesecake (4.5/5): A great cheesecake with an interesting yuzu twist. I love Ammaazzacaffe and would highly recommend a trip to this restaurant. I have come here twice and the second time, the food took quite literally a whole hour to come out after ordering. Everything tasted fine and I enjoy the ambiance of the restaurant, but by the time the food actually came out, I was practically falling asleep at the table. The skewers were good but rather salty. They also have matchboxes if you're looking to expand your collection. read more
