The absolute best ice cream hands down -- hopefully they never post their calories so I can keep wondering / marveling at how tasty it is

I can only vouch for the Salted Crack Caramel and the Strawberries and Creme flavors but I can tell you that this is a must try spot. If the long line scares you away, I want to be the voice of reason to tell you to fear evil, spiders, kids younger than 8 who talk too much but do not fear the long line. It's honestly worth the wait. The Salted Crack Caramel is really good. Best Caramel Ice Cream I've had. You take one lick and that lick can last about 10 seconds of nirvana. Then you take another lick and its like nirvana transcended into another nirvana up in the cosmos. It is very savory. The Strawberries and Creme is so good as well. The organic strawberries makes a difference. It is savory as give decent size scoops for the price. $10 for 2 scoops and sprinkles on top (I always have to have rainbow sprinkles on top). This place would be 5 stars if it wasn't for the long line almost out to the door. They have a kids section in the back where they can read about ice cream and act like they are making ice cream. This place has been hyped up quite a bit and while they do have fun flavors the ice cream consistency is very dense and melts really fast, I always feel gross after eating it. I love thick ice cream, but I think they use too much sugar. It's so sweet it almost makes me sick and it's also really sticky, so when it melts you're doomed. Definitely get napkins! I've been here a lot of times and know so many people who love the ice cream here so I'm giving it 4 stars because I figure it's my problem; I'm just not into super sweet ice cream! read more

The most epic ice cream addiction ever. The name of this shop's most notorious flavor (salted caramel crack) leaves nothing to the imagination and delivers completely on what it conjures in your mind--addictive, indulgent, the flavors of salt + caramel. What keeps you salivating for this incredibly rich (and by rich I mean it even beat this sweet-tooth's tummy into submission after eating half of a kid's cup) are the bite size delights of their crack cookies mixed within. The cookies are a mixture of chocolate, saltines, butter and sugar compressed into a block of something that puts a Butterfinger to shame. A palette cleanser of vanilla or even chocolate ice cream might help to offset this decadent and unique flavor. Ugh. Too much goodness. Bring your CASH and leave your diet at home. read more

Their salted crack caramel, munchies and "sweet as honey" ice cream are some of the most delicious ice cream flavors I've ever had-- creamy (but not too thick), flavorful (but not overpowering) and a perfectly balanced blend of ingredients (i.e. not too much syrupy caramel/honey, not too many potato crisp/pretzel bits and not too little ice cream itself!). Pistachio with pistachio brittle is amazing. It's more pistachio-y than an actual handful of pistachios. Their chocolate is also divine; such great texture. If you're not impressed by this ice cream, then I don't think we can be friends. I wanted to try everything, but alas my wallet and my waistline would not allow it that day. Cannot believe it's taken me this long to write a review! I am obsessed with this place (obviously because I am a human that likes ice cream.) Things to note that waiting in line, even a line going out the door, is NOT uncommon. However the line moves pretty fast and it is always worth it. The staff is super cool and nice and will let you try as many flavors as you want! However if the line is esPECIALLY long that day maybe just stick to two or three flavors instead of going bonkers on the place. The Salted Crack Caramel is probably the most popular (for a reason. It's damn delicious.) I also love the Snap Mallow Pop, and The Munchies. I also make a point to try whatever special flavor they've got going on as they tend to have a rotating list of incredibly unique flavors. Some of which are even invented by fans of the establishment (check their instagram for when they do stuff like this but they put out the call for new flavors or for you to name new flavors they've invented. Super fun and I think they'll mail you a pint!) They recently started selling select flavor pints in grocery stores around Brooklyn, as I recently found out when I saw them selling at the Met FoodMarket on Nostrand and Sterling and actually squealed with delight. Ample Hills also does cakes! And they will come to your party! And from their instagram they also do weddings which is obviously the best wedding ever and if you are considering that please invite me I am GREAT at weddings. read more

Now THIS is a stellar cone. You're going to want to get 2 scoops, and the sheer size of it will nearly kill you, but it's worth every single bite. Although salted crack is by far the most popular flavor, it's a little intense for me. Last time I stopped in I got strawberries & cream and chocolate coconut sorbet (HOW IS THIS VEGAN?? WOW.) and it was an extraordinary combination. I live on the UES and make dozens of excuses each summer to make the trip out here. read more

Everything you need to know about this place: 1. The store is impeccably decorated in an old-style soda jerk fashion but with a nouveau interpretation. It's a pleasure to be here. 2. The service / people behind the counter have some of the sunniest, most friendly demeanors I've ever seen ever. They are fun and a pleasure to interact with and seem to love what they do as well as interact with the store's customers. 3. The ice cream itself is top-notch. Churned and flavored on-premises. It's about as fresh ice cream as you'll ever get. Flavor is magnificent. The milk and cream comes from semi-local farms (this is NYC after all; I would consider "local" to be, say, Brooklyn Heights...) Semi-local would be NJ, VT, etc. 4. The store is very eco-friendly. The spoons and containers are compostable. They care about recycling and go out of their way to make recycling convenient and easy for their clients. 5. Kid friendly, adult-kid friendly, and adult friendly. 6. The name makes me think of breasts. In short, this is the type of store a 5 star rating was invented for. read more

The lines are crazy long but that's because there's a cone of flavorful gold at the end. With so many playful, whimsical and creative flavors, it does take a few tastes and minutes to decide what to get. I got the flight which is 6 mini scoops. To stay, it comes in a cute ceramic half dozen egg-holder type of dish. when you get it to go, the staff puts 6 mini scoops into 2 separate cups making it hard to hold and eat. I got the ooeey gooey butter cake, snap mallow pop, salted crack caramel, vanilla bean, sweet cream & cookie and the coffee. It was hard to decide but my favorite was the snap mallow pop. My husband got the sweet cream and cookie on their home made cones. Definitely more worth it than the taster, you get a lot more ice cream. I'd give this place 5 stars based on the ice cream alone, but the ridiculously amazing customer service I received a few weeks ago puts it on a whole other level. I'm talking if god ran an ice cream place and had angels running the place. Everyone's always in a great mood and giving out samples like it's no big deal... ANYWAY, on with the story... Two days before a birthday surprise party, I ordered a last-minute ice cream cake. Word to the wise, ice cream cakes take AT LEAST two days to get all frozen and cake-shaped, so I was cutting it close. But they said it would be ready in time, so I went ahead and ordered it. Well the big day came, I dropped by, and it wasn't ready yet. I didn't have time to come back, but Eric the manager saved the day, walking 25 minutes and hand-delivering it to my apartment a couple hours later at the last minute. Double five stars all the way. The ice cream factory churns out some pretty darn good ice cream and treats. All the flavors are a good choice. The evening I went they had rum raisin which I decided to try. It is a dense quality ice cream that doesn't melt quickly. That is the tip. Ice cream of lower quality will melt like frosty the snowman on a summer day but only if he was made by Ample he might last a bit longer. On a summer day the line can be around the block which then I'm sorry I don't wait in. It was like everyone decided they wanted ice cream all at the same time and all trained to stand in line like sheep. Do not understand how anyone could give this place less than 5 stars---it is simply the most flavorful ice cream i've ever had, and they offer a bunch of variety and unique flavors. The people are super friendly and they often give free samples. Plus, it's pretty reasonably priced--not much more than baskin robbins, honestly, for another world in quality. they also make their ice-cream on site! i really regret that I now live far from the store and can't take home pints with me for fear they would melt. Faves: the honeycomb, the cookies & cream (esp. the chocolate cookies & cream!), and the ooey-gooey st. louis butter cake for sundaes. Their sundaes are to die for, and they are really generous with the whip cream, caramel or hot fudge, sprinkles. This place should be called Ample Shillz for how expensive it is! I tried peppermint pattie, salted crack caramel and dark chocolate. Everything was super sweet and very flat and one-note tasting. Obviously ice cream is sweet but the taste of sugar shouldn't overwhelm all the other flavors. The dark chocolate was slightly less sweet but just kind of boring tasting. Given the popularity of this place I had high hopes. Staff is super nice though. I'll give it one more shot and try other flavors before giving up but for now I'd say DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE! read more

Found this place through Instagram and knew it was a must when visiting New York! I visited on a Sunday around 4... I waited 10 minutes in line before being able to place my order. The place was small, yet adorable, and packed! There was a really cute little kids corner with books and toys for kids which I thought was super clever for all the impatient kiddos waiting in the long line for a treat. After reading reviews on here I saw that their salted caramel crack ice cream was a favorite and had to try it. The employees were friendly and allowed me to try it and I saw that it was way too salty for me. Instead, I had a double scoop - one of their peanut butter wins the cup and another of their strawberries with sweet cream. AMAZING! It was obvious that the peanut butter cups were homemade- they were thick with real peanut butter... The cups were my favorite part. The strawberry ice cream was amazing too-- small shreds of real strawberries in each bite.. I loved it. The outside of ample hills is adorable too.. They have a small fenced in grass area where you can sit and enjoy your ice cream. This place is very small and a little cramped which is why I didn't give it 5 stars... But the quality of their products is top notch. I would absolutely come back if I ever return to Brooklyn New York! read more

I've never had a bad flavor at Ample Hills. Honestly probably my favorite "premium" ice cream brand in the city, narrowly edging out Van Leeuwen's. They have a lot of inventive flavors here, and everything I've had has always been rich, creamy, and delicious. I used to pay an excessive amount of money to get pints of Ooey Gooey Butter Cake delivered to my apartment in Midtown via Seamless (I've had to stop this habit so as not to put on 10 lbs every season, and also save some $$, but those were the days). Love coming here in the winter, when there's no line and you can savor your ice cream in the sunny window seat without a thousand parents with strollers/children/teenagers/grumpy hot people swarming the area. read more

Last night was definitely my lucky night. I was so mesmerized by the flavors that I totally forgot I had my name on my shirt (my Yelp name tag at that) and the guy behind the counter says, "hey Ava, what flavor would you like to try??" So after I stopped drooling and tried a couple of samples, I ordered a single scoop of Mexican Hot Chocolate in a cup with a homemade cone on top. The cone was spectacular and tasted just like a cinnamon cookie. I almost don't want to tell you not to be intimidated by the long, winding line that sneaks around the back of this ice cream parlor and out the door -- because then I'll have to wait even longer, but damned if I won't do it too, for the amazing ice cream here. After a nice sushi dinner down the street, it's amazing to come to Ample Hills Creamery and pick a flavour for a sweet finish to the evening. I won't have to pine for the Shore each time I have a frozen custard craving now, since they have amazing bourbon soft-serve as well as a bevy of flavours that I'll have to come back for. My special horchata soft-serve was delicious, and also was able to steal sample licks of their chunky peanut butter. This is a definite must go on a hot summer day place... Or, maybe when it's raining, then the line is much shorter... Or, whenever... It's basically a Must. Go. Place. Ample Hills offers a pretzel waffle cone, I thought I might lose all sense of decorum enjoying that in public so I did us all a favor and went with a dish instead...but if you are feeling wild and crazy, I recommend it based on the mmmmmmmmm, ahhhhh, oh yes and WOW that were shared by others who opted for said cone. If you are unable to stop at just a flavor or two, I suggest you bring a few friends and share the flight of 6 flavors for just 9$ (incredible deal alert!) which is served in a glazed porcelain egg crate, one flavor in each 'egg spot' and it's almost too adorable to eat...but oh my goodness, eat this ice cream...you must! The flavors I've tried are all perfectly done...a richness of flavor without being overtly heavy or skimpy on mix-ins. My question...if sniffing coffee between whiffs of perfume clears your olfactory palate, then will drinking coffee between bites of this spectacular dairy treat clear your palate to enjoy more flavors at a time? I think next time I need to bring my own latte and test that theory! Funky and perfect staff in this Prospect Heights location. My server had vampire caps on his teeth and that patchouli/hipster look only the young and truly embrace and pull off...but boy was he also a great ambassador of the products! Some of the best ice cream I have had in NYC! The flavors ar extremely creative and filled with ingredients. I had the Nonna D's which was cinnamon with oatmeal cookie pieces as well as the Ooey Gooey cake which was mixed with St. Louis style butter cake. Both had ample amount of cookie/cake mixed in (maybe hence the name) and were very creamy. The price is reasonable and they are very willing to give you samples. Great place to take friends or your family for an evening snack or weekend outing! Apart from the ice cream you will also enjoy the spectacle of hyperactive kids running around who are all high off of amazing ice cream and excitement. On the corner of a little Brooklyn neighborhood, you would never expect this ice cream shop to be so full of kids and staff so full of energy. It made me not afraid to ask and try multiple flavors before I settled on sweet as honey. I had a taste of the salted crack caramel, which didn't taste so salty to me. Then the PBMC, great for PB lovers with chocolate cookie chunks. Since I want to marry this was calling my name, I tried it and it was...eh. Super sweet and I wasn't sure if I could have so much of it. I tried the sweet as honey last; and loved it. Honey comb candy is crunch and sweet but pairs well with the ice cream. Love it! I initially ran into this scoop of heaven after dinner at a near by restaurant - life has never been the same since then! The employees always have a great attitude and up for a sample-a-thon! No matter how many flavors you'd like to try they're never seemed to be bothered (seen it & did it). The shop always has a nice crowd in their seating area. Good thing is most patrons are courteous and don't over stay their welcome and give others a chance to enjoy their treats while seated. I love that they keep up with the times - seasonal items are always a nice surprise. I've tried many flavors, but my go to's remain have the same: Snap Mallow Pop, Sweet as Honey & Ooey Gooey Butter Cake on a sugar cone. I like my basic vanilla, but these flavors have just enough twist for me. If you decide to stop by on a beautiful summer day, beware of the line! The cons: there's never anywhere to park, the line is always ridiculously long and they never EVER have the homemade specialty cones. The pros: The ice cream is pretty darn good. I've been there more times than I care to admit. I've never tasted anything out of there that wasn't great. I'm a fan of all things banana or coconut and they always some variation of both flavors. Whenever I come here, there is a line that practically starts at the door, and with good reason. However, the wait on line is not terrible. There are hilarious children books near the back of the shop that you can read while you wait on line. My friend's favorite is Ice Cream Larry. There is also a post it board right before the counter where people can display random messages. My favorite post it from Tuesday? "You should name your next flavor Carlos Danger." You'll always see something interesting on that board. But forget the noise, you want to hear about the ice cream, right? Of course, you do. They are tastegasms. You want all of the flavors. The Salted Cracked Caramel is legit. If it's your first time here, you need to try it. My favorite flavor is PB MC. Other flavors that I've tried and liked are The Munchies, Peppermint Pattie, Cotton Candy, Dark Chocolate, and Strawberries and Cream. I really want to try their Ooey Gooey Butter Cake though. It sounds like it belongs in my mouth. The most underrated part of this place are their Ice Cream floats. Holy guacamole. The time before last, I tried strawberries and cream with their cheerwine cherry cola and I was ecstatic with the results. I am going to be going against the tide with this one I think. I wanted to try this place on my birthday after reading all the fabulous reviews. I especially was excited to try the Mexican Hot Chocolate flavor. Which they were out of. I instead tried the marshmallow and rice crispies flavor and the Ooey Gooey Butter Cake flavor. I was not impressed. Both ice cream bases had an extremely similar taste. It was like an extra sweet white icec ream but didnt even seem to have a nice vanilla flavor. It just seemed white and think and very sugary. The cake pieces in the Ooey Gooey were fine, but the marshmallow rice crispy flavor was a huge letdown, I tasted no marshmallow flavor, and there were literally like 3 pieces of rice in it. No not a chunk of rice crispies but just one tiny sad little piece of rice. My boyfriend had the Crack Caramel which was certainly better than mine since it actually had flavor. We both thought it was okay but nothing we would get again. Neither of us finished even half of our ice cream. Maybe if the Mexican Hot Chocolate had been there I would have gotten to try something with a good ice cream flavor instead of just white cream and sugar. Of the fancier icecream shops I prefer Odd Fellows. But so far nothing beats the small mom and pop places. read more

Ahhhhhh good ol' number 100! It is only fitting that my big one-double-oh review be about my favorite treat on the planet...ICE CREAM!!!!! I have been passing this place for a while scared to go in, terrified that I would love it, happy when they were crowded or out of flavors I wanted to try. Well on a balmy post earthquake Tuesday night, the stars aligned and I not only went in but it was emptyyyyyyyy! Excited does not even begin to describe how I felt. I was dancing and skipping like a toddler! So many flavors....how can I narrow this down??? After standing there drooling and saying "no I want this one...no wait that one...ok wait both." I finally decided on Chocolate Flake and Chocolate Malted (think I like chocolate?) on a waffle cone. I would go there just for the cone it was so damn good! My final decision was difficult because the samples were just as delectable. I hate that I now know what those evil people in there are doing to cream and sugar and chocolate. Creating flavors geared towards sending me into a early Costco sized grave. Walking distance too? Sigh JEEEEEEEZ man this was the best mother effing shut yo mouth ice cream ever! Honestly, this is by far the best icecream I've ever had and I am sooooo happy they are now closer to my apartment @Brooklyn Bridge Park so that I no longer have to walk to Prospect Heights in order to get my icecream fix(yes, I always walk- because I can never get just one scoop, it always has to be a double so I like to walk-it-out in order to not feel guilty). I will probably not fit into my wedding dress this upcoming September thanks to them being so conveniently located- but the icecream is so delicious, I'd say it's worth it ! All of the icecream is handcrafted using fresh, local ingredients- and it's so creamy(the way I'm pretty sure iceCREAM was intended to be). Since my first scoop of Ample HIlls Creamery last summer, every other icecream I have tried since, pales in comparison and generally leaves me completely disappointed-"seriously, I just wasted calories on this?" I haven't tried a flavor that I don't like, my top two flavors are salted crack caramel and the sweet as honey! A few other reasons that Ample Hills is my favorite: they let you sample as many flavors as you want and never give you that "I'm so annoyed, will you just pick already look" I often get at other places(choosing a flavor can be a hard decision, what if I pick the wrong one and then I'm stuck with flavor-envy watching someone else eat something I wish I had chosen?), they also will let you get more than one flavor in a single scoop(amazing? I think so!), They have 24 different flavors that change daily& you can check their facebook page where they update the menu daily, they make ice cream cake(I'm hoping that my fiance will see this post and get me a friggen cake from here for my birthday), you can have private parties in off-hours, and lastly- everyone that works here obviously loves their job because they're all so nice/happy!! Tips: I always see people struggling to push strollers through the front door, there's a ramp on the side, they accept plastic(however, currently at Brooklyn Bridge park, cash only), during the warmer months, the line can be ridiculously long but it moves fast and trust me, the ice cream is worth the wait! read more

This was one of my bookmarks for vacation, so I made sure to eat lunch here (what do you mean, ice cream isn't lunch? Or dinner?). This is a cute little place, decorated with vintage things and very welcoming - it even has a patch of fake grass and a park bench outside within their gate - which is perfect for an ice cream place. The friendly atmosphere is further enhanced by cute illustrations on the cards in the freezer case that name and explain their ice cream flavors. There's a ledge in front of the case for young 'uns to step on to get a better look, meaning you don't have to hurt your back picking up your kid to look in. There were about a dozen homemade flavors, and it took some pondering, but I chose Cookie Au Lait: Brooklyn Roasting Company espresso ice cream with Back To Nature creme cookies (AKA Oreos). The ice cream had a very rich flavor and a deep coffee taste, without being bitter. I kept my sample spoon so I could take little bites and savor the ice cream instead of wolfing it down. I ordered my scoop in a biodegradable cup - there's a compost bin, which I like a lot - although afterwards I saw that they also have house-made cones in chocolate and chocolate chip, which I would've partook in had I known. $4.35 is expensive for a single scoop, but Ample Hills' ice cream was so delicious and the flavors were so unusual, without being too weird to be appealing, that it's worth the money for a treat. read more

This place is sooo good, even the plain-jane, no-frills ice cream flavors will make you want to sing that the hills are alive with the sound of music. Warning: According to my bf, the salted crack caramel will have you drinking a gallon of water in one sitting. read more

My friend raved over this place, so of course I was excited to give it a try. Ample Hills Creamery is a cute traditional ice cream shop with a large variety of unique flavors to try. Even though I'm lactose intolerant, I still sacrifice feeling sick for a delicious taste of this wonderful creamery...BUT THEY HAD VEGAN! I was very excited, but only three flavors...which is better than none. I tried about 5 samples before making a decision. The ooey gooey was by far the best, but I opted for the vegan chocolate and Nonna D's oatmeal lace. I loved the fact that you can get more than one scoop in any size, so I was able to get a kids size with two flavors ($3.50). The ice cream was full of flavor and incredibly rich. The only reason why I'm not giving it a full 5 stars is because I think the hype of the place got to my head. I loveddd the taste, but I couldn't say it's "the best" ice cream I've ever had (I've had a lot of good ice cream in my day). Pros: Great variety of unique flavors, perfect sizes, rich ingredients, and great service. They were so nice! Cons: Over hyped so not "the best" but I would still qualify it as a leading ice creamery and a little on the pricey side. read more
