Recently I have been thinking about fostering children. A friend suggested I reach out to the Children's Cabinet for guidance. One of their amazing employees agreed to speak to me about what the Children's Cabinet does for the community and she discussed the fostering process and the good and the bad that can come with it. She easily spent an hour of her time with me and after, she put me in direct contact with the fostering program. Because of the love, respect and compassion for children, families and the community, I wanted to do more too. One thing they offer is Adopt a Family for the holidays. You sign up, are given a family and you shop for them so they have a better Christmas. I haven't felt the twinkle of Christmas in a very long time. My family got so much joy searching for the perfect gifts for others. Reach out to this amazing organization!

A lot of agencies get donations given to them, & you really don't see the same amount going back to the community, I know Children's Cabinet really helps out, because not only have they helped me in the past, but friends & acquaintance I have, so I know as soon as I'm in a position to give a donation, I'll solely give it all to this great program, because I know it will get back into the right hands!!

Public high school will have an advisor who can help direct your child into this program. It is also available to homeschoolers who qualify and pass the accuplacer for Math and English. My son has been taking a class here that qualifies for dual credit. That means it counts as high school credit and college credit. This is how many homeschoolers I know are getting an AA degree when they graduate high school. He has enjoyed taking classes here. By the way if you are going to take a class here I highly suggest looking at Ratemyprofesser.com There is also a 25% discount on tuition for in-person classes. Did you know the youth homeless population is the fastest growing in the nation?…read more As a masters candidate at UNR, Lynette Eddy did, and she saw a need to get ahead of it in our community, starting the Eddy House to help, and today this is one of the most successful in the nation! I had the opportunity to work for the first version of this NPO near the beginning, when they owned a home in NW Reno that provided a safe place for 5-8 young men to live and owned a restaurant in downtown Reno as a work experience for them. I knew the organization was vital then, but it just wasn't the right format for them to deliver their maximum impact. Over the years they learned a lot, and under the leadership of some extremely astute folks, they've grown into the vital community organization I always knew them to be. Starting with the YOU, they helped homeless youth find purpose and footing, access to necessary resources and opportunities to learn academically and about themselves with the support of some great local partners. In the last year they realized their dream of opening a 24 hour drop in center for youth, something so incredibly needed by our community, and they continue to advance their mission from there. Now they need our support more than ever. If you can, consider sharing something with them so they can continue to serve the community.

One of the things we appreciate most is the small, intimate setting--it allows for meaningful one-on-one time between the kids, their friends, and their teachers, which has made such a positive impact on our boys. The school also does an amazing job creating opportunities for families to be involved. Events like the family lunches, Mother's Day and Father's Day celebrations, and holiday parties make it feel like more than just a school--it's a community. Most importantly, both of our boys absolutely love going to school. They come home excited to share stories about their teachers and friends, which says everything. We feel confident that they are well cared for, supported, and getting exactly what they need to prepare for elementary school. We couldn't be more grateful to have found such a special place.

September 13, 2025 was my most recent visit to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada…read more Kudos to Nancy V of Reno who tirelessly coordinates the volunteer efforts at least 6 times a year at this Food Bank location. Here is my story: Very organized Very neat and clean establishment Very articulate Manager Very worthy cause Get there and volunteer for 3 hours. Wash your hands and dawn your gloves. Get assigned to a station and get to work. This journey, I sorted canned goods. We need to check on several things and they are: expiration date of product and condition of good. Each type of food in cans have different expiration dates. They are sorted by container in advance of our getting to work. They had pallets of dried goods, infant foods, paper products, and the list goes on. It is my understanding that Walmart (whose regional distribution center is a block away) brings their stale dated or expired goods to The FBNN for repacking and distribution. Nothing goes to waste. Whatever does not got out to various charities goes out to various farms to feed their herd. A worthwhile cause, a worthwhile journey! Hana Hou Nancy V
