When I moved to the Upper West Side 8 years ago, I found Amsterdam Barber shop and it is without a doubt the best barber shop I have ever used. while Vlad was very nice. his skills are not just there. Completely messed up a simple crewcut with a fade. was also charged for a beard trim when all he did was do a line on my neck. Everyone is extremely nice, and you get the sense of a true community amongst the Upper West Side in their shop. Maria, has consistently cut and colored my hair and every time it's superb! Not only does she do men's haircuts but her knowledge for women's cut and color is fabulous. This shop stands strong in their craft. If you're looking for something really quick and you don't really have many specifications, go here. If you're looking to be taken care of, go elsewhere. I was rushed in and out, the woman who cut my hair clearly did not want to be there and sort of made the whole experience a little stressful. They were nice enough and the haircut is only $20 but if you want a real barber who loves what they do, go the guys on 80th. I know I'll be going to my regular guys there from now on. read more

I get my monthly haircut at Amsterdam barber shop and am almost always pleased. I have a barber that is almost always at the store, and never disappoints, cutting my hair consistently well. However, when this man is not present, that is when I become displeased. My least favorite hair cuts that I have received in the past few years have been from various barbers that I am not used to. I was once used as practice for a barber in training how was looking at the tv more than at me or my hair. Despite this, I have developed a friendship with many of the barbers in the family owned barber shop and am now sending my kids there as well. read more

One of the best kept secrets in NYC! My 20th haircut at Amsterdam Barber Shop. I get one every 3 weeks and I must say that Maria is wonderful. I decided to give them a try when I got sick of paying $120 for a haircut with unpredictable results and I asked one of my clients (who looks awesome) to give me the name of her stylist...voila...she referred me to Maria. I must confess that I was very hesitant about the name "barber shop" and the low price of ($25) made me nervous but I gave them a shot. The best thing I ever did!!. In the last 4 months I have entrusted Maria with my coloring also (although I choose to bring my own) and I am totally satisfied. Do not be afraid. She is the real deal and you won't be disappointed. She listens to her clients, she is very hip and charming. I have sent many of my colleagues and friends to her, no complaints, they are very happy, a few of their husbands go to her too. I used to go to Re-Amir around the corner because I read YELP reviews about them. HOWEVER, they butchered my hair....badly(both guys who I tried there). I went to see Vlad at Amsterdam Barber shop and he's the man. Yeah, I'm that kind of guy who gets nervous about getting a hair cut by someone new. When I first sat down with Vlad, I wasn't sure he was the "communicative" type and wondered if he would ask about or listen to what I wanted. But he turned out to be a kind, soft-spoken guy who really cared about what you walked away with--he asked on several occasions, "Is this the right length?" And let me tell you, he is precise! A great cut with not a hair out of place, and a relaxing straight-razor neck shave, all for sixteen rubles. I'll be going back. The haircut itself, is fine. No better than the American Barber Institute cut by students in Midtown for $7. I paid however, $18 plus tip for a haircut from here and was supremely disappointed. After the cut I wasn't given a clean-up at all, my head was literally covered with loose hair and that was fun while I went back home on the subway. It's as if the business is forcing you to pay for a shampoo. Fuck this business and go to ABI Midtown. Students actually care about what they're doing and will give you a better cut for less than half the price. read more

So I decided to take a chance and go ( even though I knew my girlfriend would kick me out if she saw something different about my hair), but I still took the chance. As we came in a women got up and asked if she can help us, My father quickly ran towards her to give her a kiss and a hug.
