If friendliness and fair prices are your top priority for a barber, you will like this place. But a series of small (and not so small) mishaps lowered my opinion. Since I just moved to the UWS, I wanted to find a barber within Covid- era walking distance. The under $30 price enticed me, and the pics on Yelp looked good. But when I came at 9:30 am they were not yet open despite their hours listed online. After visiting the nearby dollar store, I came back and was ushered in around 10 am. The barber was friendly and accommodating, and wore a mask. However, the two ladies who helped with nails/shampooing were unmasked inside the store. Although 6 feet away, it was uncomfortable. The haircut was just ok; I asked for a fade on the side and a trim on top with the front longer to flip up. The fade was good but the top of my hair was chopped up pretty bad. I guess one good thing was realizing how far my receding hairline has come, since my previous barber did a masterful job covering it up. So maybe I should give more stars? read more

I'm very picky with who cuts my hair. I have a certain taste, and not every barber knows how to cut my hair right. That being said, it will be a journey to find a new barber since moving back to NYC. I searched Yelp, and found this barber shop to be one of many options in the upper west side. This place used to be really nice, but now it's just a scam and they look for every chance to nickel and dime you to death. I got a haircut last week and asked them to trim my beard a little as well. According to the sign, it should have been like 35 dollars. Came out to 50 because they charged 4 dollars for parting my hair, and 10 for a razor shave that I didn't ask for. I moved to NYC 6 months ago and I have had a painfully horrible time trying to find a good barber since I arrived. I even had one barber refuse to to cut my hair when I explained that I wanted the back and the sides shaved off. So today I came to yelp when I needed another hair cut and decided to give Elite a try. I ended up in the chair of a wonderful lady named Sinead, with the chair closest to the window. Alex fucked my hair up man, Jesus. There are so many better barber shops out here like Elvin's for an example. The trick about this barber shop is that their open on Sunday's. I prefer a male to cut my hair...just because. I recently moved to NYC and have used a few other barbers but wanted to find one closer to home. First, it is actually called Elite Unisex Hair Salon and Barber Shop (misleading). I am way too polite to walk out of a place because a woman is the available barber - I am open to anything. That is usually how I find amazing places. She was the sloppiest "barber" I have ever met, scraping hair off on the cape, banging her scissors constantly because they were not sharp and kept pulling my hair, and answering her cell phone in the middle of my cut! Absolutely unacceptable in my book of good customer service. This is coming from someone who refuses to talk on his phone in line at Starbucks so as not to be rude to the cashier. Get my drift? After slicking back my hair with gel and making me look like I came straight from the Jersey shore (except with an exceptionally bad haircut) I paid and tipped, and left to run the three blocks home to try to wash the ugly from my poor head. After some trimming of my own I think I can wait a week to go back to the good people at Barbershop 72 on West 72nd Street to repair the damage. Basically, if you need a fairly-priced place to take your kid for a haircut, come here. I'm not so sure why they would change the name; re-branding is usually reserved for companies like WorldCom and Blackwater that need to shed their negative image. Honestly, it seems like a poor business move, but they are still the same great barber shop run by the same great people. As Scott Y. pointed out, Elite Barber Shop is is the perfect barber for the perfectly normal guy. I must admit that I frequent Jude & Me Salon when I need some serious work done, but for the simple shave and haircut, you can't beat Elite. I'll take flak for this, but the most prominent feature of Elite is that they are a barber shop that caters well to white guys' hair. The Manhattan Valley and Morningside area is littered with barber shops that don't seem to understand white-guy-hair. I've made the mistake of walking into several places expecting a normal trim and they turned my hair and/or beard into the ghetto-special. This is not a shop that blares hip hop and buzzes spirals into the sides of men's heads. You can trust them, honky. At most low-key barbers, you can get a shave and a haircut for two bits (adjusted for inflation). Elite, in my opinion, is a bit pricier. The shave and haircut is $27 ($15 for haircut, $12 for shave) so it gets a bit pricey when you start adding all of the bells and whistles. That said, it's still cheaper than a no-frills haircut (no shave) at Jude & Me Salon which charges $36 for a men's haircut. I still recommend Elite for the average New York gringo. read more

There were either two outcomes: 1) An agreeable cut done with noticeable effort by the younger guy occupying the chair as soon as you enter the shop 2) A slapdash effort marked with casual indifference by a typically sullen Alex. I decided to go elsewhere for cuts after a disconcerting experience, where during a shave, I caught Alex taking a picture of me with his cell phone and sharing a good laugh with his "pal" once I averted my glance. Pretty awkward. Also, while I understand the importance of conversing in one's native language, there was always a strong suspicion that at times, they talked rudely about their customers. Bizarre behavior and distrust aside, a haircut and shave will run you almost $30 dollars if you decide to include a decent tip, which I would usually give begrudgingly. On Jose and Gil's earlier recommendations, I decided to take a risk and get a much-needed haircut today, right before an important social engagement. I made sure to load a couple of photos of a great haircut I'd gotten elsewhere in August into my iPhone, and wandered down to the shop. After sitting on a padded bench for a couple of minutes, I was greeted by a Russian woman named Olga, to whom I showed the photos. With a curt nod, she quickly went to work on me, using mostly electric clippers and serrated scissors (I prefer short on the sides, thick and spiky on top). I had to remind her to trim up my neckline with a razor, as she seemed to be rushed. I left with an OK haircut, good enough but not spectacular. It was good value for the price at $14, and I tipped her $5 anyway.
