This review is my experience of the trip frkm el paso to tucson. El Paso train station Is huge. Waiting area consist of wooden church bench and a vending machine Room where you can plug your phone to charge. The train was late and never got notified until 30mins AFTER i arrived at the station. Once the train arrived, Downloading took about 10 mins Original take off 1:47, Left at 2:54 Tips- Bring your own food to include your own beverages. You only get water and ice included in your ticket. Going on a Long haul, bring blanket and pillow. One lady brought a fitted sheet to drape over her seat...good idea If, like me , you have a neighbor, its ok. You can hang out at the lounge or snack bar...pretty empty. bring your charger. Outlets everywhere. If you have an enthusiatic conductor, he'll point out key things along the way. I see why they named it the sunset route. Right after Lordsburg,  the sun started to set...beautiful however the scenery was distorted by the water spots on the window. Beware- High prices on snacks...as expected Rude people who don't use ear plugs for their mobile electronics, however, letting the conductor know nipped it at the bud. My 7hour trip to include a 45mins delay was long enough to experience Amtrak. I must admit, it was an enjoyable trip read more

I am a frequent traveler of AmTrak & just want to openly express my concerns. The first bathroom door on the first level of train 2/422, 34109, coach class, I had locked the door to that bathroom & as I was attempting to exit, I attempted to unlock the door, but for some peculiar reason, the damn door would not unlock! So I banged it from the inside & yelling to get a staff's attention & sure enough, one of them came because I heard that male staff on the opposite side of the door & loudly asked me if I was one one behind that door & J yelled I was! So he managed to get the door open & that's when I asserted that door lock needs replacement, but he was dismissive saying it just got alittle jammed (as if nothing really just happened.). But I am bringing this matter to the public's attention that the doors on those restrooms need to be thoroughly inspected before someone else experiences the same thing! It's a safety issue & should not happen at all like this. But other than that, I have had nothing, but a very good experience traveling on AmTrak. I have been a frequent AmTrak train traveler since September 2022. I will continue traveling on AmTrak, but I would like to see improvements on those bathroom locks. read more

The debit card machine doesn't work. They kept announcing cash only. For us to get cash if we plan on eating. Some of us didn't even have enough money to withdrawal any money. Only the money we had in our cards. I am on a train ride with over 9-12 hour ride. Two children. One who is only 5, have absolutely nothing to eat. I asked for a free meal ONLY for my son. Not me and my daughter. The workers on this train didn't give us anything. I even said can you we just have a small piece of a sandwich and they couldn't even do that. What kind of company is this??? They said my only option is a $25.00 KIDS MEAL !!!!!!!!!! We are hanging in there trying to make this trip on 3 empty stomachs. Not even a water to drink. My luggage ended up traveling on into El Paso but I had turn around in Bakersfield, I been trying since Saturday to get my luggage sent back to Sacramento. Iv contacted Amtrak to get this done but I only have gotten rude customer service reps attitude instead of gettingy luggage. That was everything I own an would like my stuff returned. The conditions of the sleeping cars left much to be desired. The showers is a joke. You're in a room the size of an airplane toilet. There is a shower hose and a curtain to make it seem like a shower. On the plus side, the staff on the train are very attentive. read more

Amtrak is the only way to travel these days. The trains will always be at the station, unlike the airlines which can steal your money and then NEVER have to return it, even per THE GOVERNMENT WEBSITE ON THE FAA! It says, you only have a 24 hour discourse to cancel tickets, and who will KNOW they have issues 24 hours before?! No one! It's a ripoff scandal by the airlines, so, I've gone back in time and now exclusively take Amtrak. Does it take longer? Yes. I just tell business associates, would you like me there AT ALL, even if it takes 4 days? Or...do we wanna risk me not getting there, and having to rebook flights 2,000 times? I've decided to never fly again. Amtrak and Acela only for me, from here on out. 100% ground travel, never air. read more

Recently took a trip on the Amtrak train the Texas Eagle # 421 from Alpine,Tx to Ontario, Ca. It was filthy!! No one cleans this train. Even during this COVID-19 pandemic nothing gets cleaned or sanitized. The observation car tables and inside windows are very dirty, curtains next to my seat have dried brown crusty stuff dripping off them and down the wall. They need to do better! Love traveling on Amtrak, much better then flying and you can see the country. Get a sleeper and your meals are included Surprisedly the meals are good and is served in the dining car or your sleeping car attendant will bring it to you. The sleeping car attendant will make your bed for you when you need it and will also turn it down for you at night. There is the lounge and sightseeing car too, if you want snacks or drinks and take in the sights. You will meet lots of peoples some from out of the country. It's the best way to travel if you want to tour the USA!! read more

There is nothing like going across several states via a sleep car on Amtrak. It may seem pricey when you are booking, but the upgrade is definitely worth every penny. You get a private bathroom, your own butler, and all meals included. This is and amazing way to watch the country roll by out of the window in your private cabin- lounging with your feet up and listening to or watching movies on you personal electronic device. On this occasion, I dropped a friend off who was headed to visit family in Chicago after his retirement. I tried to talk him into the sleep car but he wanted to do it on the cheap. After eight hours into the trip he was texting me videos of his upgraded private car and he was loving life. When I picked him up on his return he said he would definitely recommend it to anyone- no I did not say "I told you so"... read more

Our first time train trip (6 hours) from Tucson to El Paso was an unexpectedly great, fun, relaxing experience that ended in this grand, unfortunately empty (of traveler's services like rental car, restaurant/cafe, gift shop, etc.) train station. The 4-star rating is for the wonderful trip with a star deducted because we left Tucson 3 hours late. No Airport TSA BS so we arrived 30 minutes before departure with no fuss. Good food options while on the train. 1st Class leg and head space on coach upper seats. Great views on a smooth track. We've been on ships, flights, cars of course, and now the rails. For us, train travel is tied for 1st with cruising for travel! read more

All the negative reviews are pretty much spot on. The things Amtrak doesn't tell you before you purchase a ticket: Their timeframes are hopeful ideas, but in no way guaranteed; Amtrak leases rail usage from Southern Pacific, and paying Amtrak customers are rated behind their trains, so you will be giving way to, and regularly following, slow-moving freight trains. Add at least two hours to your trip if you engage in this fiasco. read more

We were excited to use Amtrak but are very disappointed. I paid a lot of $$$ to have a train vacation experience and it departed 2hrs late, it stops due to mechanical problems and now we have to get off at El Paso to take a 12hr bus ride to San Antonio . My kids are upset because the whole idea was to ride the train. What a mistake. They blame it on fire but this train has been nothing but mechanical problems. It's easier to blame Mother Nature than Amtrak take responsibility. read more

Depending on whether you are eastbound or westbound, this will either be your first stop or last stop in Texas. The first thing you notice when your train (the Sunset Limited and Texas Eagle) pulls into the Amtrak Station in El Paso is -- well -- Ciudad Juarez, Mexico on the other side of the razor wire-topped fences. This is kind of a scary place compared to most Amtrak stations. They have sniffer dogs and border patrol who board the train and check to make sure everybody and every bag is what it professes to be. But considering the war that's going on at the deep border these days -- it's not surprising. It's a short stop (thank goodness) and I suspect they keep it as short as possible for that very reason. The surprise here is The Burrito Lady. :D Yep. Home-made burritos peddled on the platform by a wonderful woman who makes them by hand every day. And these are not Del-Taco-Bueno-Bell-Mojo burritos. These are real, honest to Dios food wagon burritos. And oh my. Buy 2. Or 3. Red or Green. Hot or mild. Bean and cheese, beef.... Just try some of everything. At $2 each, this is the best and cheapest meal you'll get anywhere near an Amtrak station or train. If it's near lunch or dinner when your train gets there -- get yourself a real taste of the border. The smile will last all the way to LA (or NOLA). read more

I'd love to give Amtrak 4 maybe even 4.5 stars but this trip forced me to give them a three. I honestly want to give them a 2 but my desire to support the rail system is swaying me. The train station in El Paso is beautiful. I have no complaints about it. Everyone was courteous and welcoming. Getting in the tai was quick and easy. It's the trail itself that really bummed me out. There's something romantic about taking the train. It definitely isn't the quickest way to travel and its not the least expensive either but the experience really makes up for the differences. I secured a roomette which is essentially a private room with 2 extra large seats. They fold into a single bed and above there is a shelf styled bed that creates a top bunk. The room is small but pretty much what I expected. I threw my stuff in the room which has no lock. Didn't like that part. Went to the observation deck. This is a really cool idea but the delivery is lacking. The seats are not comfortable and the area between the seat and the window is tiny. Anyone. Over 5' 6" will have no leg room. When booking my travel I was told the dinning car would be open till 3pm for lunch. When we boarded the train before 2 we were told the car was closed till dinner 3 hours later. We went to the "cafe" downstairs where they advertised hot sandwiches burgers and wings. What they didn't tell us was the microwaved part. I would have rather had a fresh sandwich and not nuked it. After 3 hours of trying to find a comfortable spot to sit our dinner reservation came around. You're seated at a table of four and they fill the table with four people no matter your party size. Personally I don't mind eating with strangers but I could see how this could be odd for some. Fact is to process the amount of people on the train it's a necessity and to a bad one. Dinner was served promptly and the meal was good. I would have better comments but my steak was prepared medium well instead of medium rare. Not just mine but everyone at the table. The wine was good and the salad was tiny but fresh. We stopped in Tucson for a pick up and drop off that seemed to last to long. Tis meant the "Sunset" part of the Sunset limited was limited to a view of the train station. Not cool. The observation deck kept the lights on even after sunset so mstead of seeing the nights sky or the lights from the towns we'd pass we saw reflections of ourselves. Again not cool. After looking at myself in the mirror for an hour or so I decided it was time to head to the sleeps car. The roomette was as I left it but hot and musky. I attempted to call the attendant but the button worked as well as the climate control dial. After about 15 mins I finally. Gave up and went to find the attendant. He was nice but less then compassionate. I quote "let's just hope we get to L.A. soon" not cool for the third time. I wish I could say that the trip was everything I imagined and for most parts it was. The problem is that the areas that didn't work we're really bad. Enough for me pull out my iPad and write this review in the heat of my room. I'm sitting here with beads of sweat forming. read more

GREAT ARCHITECTURE BUT LACKING SOME (Warning: Young adults from Central Florida in for vacation) This Amtrak building is large and almost cavernous however it's actually pretty empty inside. SO WHAT'S INSIDE? The several rows of seats are pushed to the side closest to the ticket area. Thankfully (even though there were lots of other passengers waiting) we still found seats for us. Other than that, there's nothing else on the floor which makes the space inside seem so empty. There's also a small area with vending machines and tables if you crave a snack. It's weird because one side also houses an architecture school. But that's it inside. LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION Unfortunately, if you want to see anything from El Paso or grab a bigger meal while you wait for the Amtrak, there's nothing in the vicinity. Likewise, expect a bit of a walk from the station itself to the train. That means elderly and children may need help or need to be kept close during that walk. read more

i will never take amtrak again!!! my 1st train was late 8 1/2 hours!!! customer relations was absolutely incompetent & rude! i had to schedule a 2nd train stranding me in el paso for 5 days! now my 2nd train is running 4 hours late! i almost lost my job with nothing but "sorry" for my troubles! absolutely pathetic!!!! how they stay in business is beyond me! their "customer service" is joke! don't give amtrak your hard earned money! read more

this review is for the wonderful and kind lady who works at the amtrak el paso union station. ms. guadalupe. super nice and accommodating, informative and really showed empathy when our train was delayed over 12 hours. we will remember her. amtrak union station is a historical building with probably no plans to air condition the place. ms. lupe place cold water bottles for us so that we could have something cold to drink. can't wait for our return trip to el paso in a couple of years... hope she still there! read more

Amtrak runs from New Orleans to Los Angeles. Anyone who is in a hurry obviously needs to take a plane.

Very hot but a great place to walk around. Nice bathroom. Just wish this train was way quieter . This would be relaxing if it wasn't for bad parenting. read more

Amtrak Sunset Limited stops at this very cool station. It looks good but the inside is empty. No stores, no place to get a newspaper or food, nothing. But it is pretty. read more
