I'd driven past it countless times over the last few years but either didn't have enough time to stop or couldn't convince anyone else to stop with me. During my Lancaster Adventure Day, though, all of that changed. I purchased a Single Scoop ticket online ahead of time for $16.75 and reserved the very first time slot of the day at 10am. I figured a late-summer Thursday morning would be the sweet spot, and it turned out to be a great decision. It was busy enough that the place felt lively but not so crowded that I had to wait for every exhibit. Parking was plentiful, and I somehow managed to snag a spot right in front of the GIANT cow out front. Honestly, my day was already off to a fantastic start! The only hiccup of the visit came during check-in. Even though I'd already purchased my ticket online, I still had to wait in the same line as everyone buying gift shop items, purchasing admission and asking questions. Since there were only a two employees working both the registers and admissions, the line moved a little slower than I expected. If I could change one thing, it would be creating a separate express check-in line for folks who already have tickets. Once I finally made it inside, though, everything became easy peasy! The exhibits are completely self-guided, so you can wander at your own pace learning how Turkey Hill makes its ice cream and iced tea while playing with interactive displays along the way. One of my favorite parts was creating my own virtual ice cream flavor, complete with custom packaging. I also wanted to film my own Turkey Hill commercial, but those stations stayed busy the entire time I was there, so that'll have to wait until another visit. Naturally, I made a beeline for the tea sampling station. As someone who appreciates sugar-free options, I was thrilled to find both Zero Sugar Sweet Tea and Zero Sugar Fruit Punch available to sample. Both were fantastic! Then it was time for the part we'd all been waiting for...unlimited ice cream samples. One thing I really appreciated is that they weren't tiny little "blink and it's gone" samples. You picked two flavors, and they served actual scoops in a bowl. For an attraction centered around ice cream, that felt exactly right. My only tiny complaint? Wooden popsicle sticks instead of spoons. They definitely got the job done, but they made eating melting ice cream a little more awkward than it needed to be. Still...free and unlimited ice cream? I'm not about to complain too loudly! I spent about an hour wandering through the exhibits, playing with the interactive displays and enjoying the air conditioning on a hot August morning before making one final stop in the gift shop. Prices there were about what you'd expect for a tourist attraction, but there were plenty of fun souvenirs if you're looking to bring a little Turkey Hill home with you. Overall, I'd absolutely recommend visiting the Turkey Hill Experience at least once. I don't know that it's somewhere I'd return over and over again, but it was a fun, interactive way to spend an hour learning something new, eating entirely acceptable quantities of free ice cream and escaping the August heat. That sounds like a pretty successful adventure day to me!

The interactive exhibits were engaging, and the kids loved learning how ice cream is made and creating their own virtual flavors. The highlight was definitely sampling the different ice cream flavors and making our own ice cream creations.

But my favorite thing about this branch is that they have tons of non-book items for children that can be loaned out such as puzzles, games, theme backpacks, lacing cards, etc. I use them for the children I work with and these items have been a huge help to me. The only downside of this branch is that they have a small collection of books due to space. However, you can request books from other locations throughout Lancaster County.

While it's smaller than the Manheim Township branch it has an excellent children's department complete with (at the time) a play store, bins of train sets, blocks, etc. and a few ride on toys. Noticeably less crowded and with a comfy chair for the caretaker, it's easily a place to linger while your child plays safely. In addition to the free play toys there's several computers for children (toddler aged up) with learning games and such. I tried to get her interested in some of the games but they didn't hold her interest and quite honestly they were pretty lame. At a recent visit we noticed the play store was gone and replaced with a play kitchen so I believe the larger toys are rotated. What I especially like about this children's area is the backpacks and clear bags full of themed activities that you can check out. Some contain books in addition to games and puzzles on that theme, while others are just games and toys. I haven't seen these elsewhere and while I believe they have a shorter check out period it's a nice change from the toys you might have at home. While I haven't explored the adult section of the library I have taken advantage of the magazines and newspapers you can read in house. Additionally they offer movies and new book releases for check out. In the lobby there are bargain paperbacks for sale and free magazines for the taking. Grab a calendar of events at the check-out counter as they also offer activities (reading related as well as crafts and fun events) for both children and adult alike. I'm excited to attend the Cat in the Hat green eggs and ham breakfast next month which required advance purchase as some of their events do. SIDENOTE: Closed Fridays. Very handicap accessible with a ramp at the entrance and everything on one floor.

US Post Office here in Mount Joy is probably one of the most delightful mail experiences I've ever had. The staff (it's usually the same person every time I go) is friendly and congenial--they actually seem like that want to be there. Normally, there's never a line or only one other person being waited on. I did go the other day during the holidays to send a couple of packages and there were several people in line. However, by the time I took care of all of my taping and addressing my boxes, the line had diminished and I only waited for about two minutes for my turn to be up. When I lived in Suffolk, Virginia, the post office there closed for an hour during lunchtime and they had a larger staff. Well, Mount Joy is a much smaller town with a smaller staff yet I do not see any closures during lunchtime. Take that, Suffolk! Their hours are: M-F 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Saturday 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. There are PO Boxes but no 24 hour access (M-F 5am-5pm, Sat 5am-3pm, Sun-closed). This facility does not process US Passports applications or renewals. There is a small parking lot to the right of the building and there is also a drive-up mailbox there as well. Obviously, it's not normally an issue, but still.

Eileen and her staff make a breakfast every morning that could feed and army in terms of quantity, but the quality of making everything from scratch is apparent in the taste. We had the Farmers Suite and it is perfect for a family of four with two younger children as the room has bunk beds which are very sturdy, safe, and will be a hit with the kids. Every morning after breakfast Galen will take the kids on a pony ride or a "train ride" around the property. They will also give you baskets to let the kids go into the chicken house to pick out the eggs every day and to feed their collection of goats and sheep. Not to be missed is the chance to watch and to try milking a cow. Galen, Eileen and their staff have created a true farm heaven that should not be missed. (The only big negative about going is that when you send a reservation request through their website a lot of times you do not a get a response for several days if at all without sending another request or sending an email asking about the status of your original request.)

All of the rooms are air conditioned and the whole house is extremely clean and comfortable. A huge farm, family style breakfast is included with your stay, where everyone staying eats together. We enjoyed collecting eggs from the hen house, feeding the baby calves, milking the cows, petting and feeding the goats, pony rides and hay rides. Couldn't have hoped for better hosts! Great place to stay if visiting Amish country, Hershey Park, or Dutch Wonderland.

Upon entry it is a skylit setting of a large number of jewelry display counters. Staff are amazingly attentive and knowledgeable. They offer something to drink and ask whatever they can do to make you feel comfortable enough to spend big bucks on beautiful jewels, watches and other elegant fittings. This is a beautiful store with beautiful expensive things. They are full service providing everything from jewelry cleaning, repair, replacement, sizing, whatever is needed to keep your jewels looking their finest. This is not free. These are high end professional jewelers who know what they are doing. Replacing a watch battery is $15. Making a ring a size bigger, about $125. Replacing a tiny stone and resizing, reinforcing prongs, about $225. If you love estate pieces as I do, there are 3 cases. A gold filigree type emerald ring surrounded by peridots was $1500. A large opal in a gold setting, $1600. A 1960s pink opal, $600. I have to say that skilled jewelers are harder to come by. To stock watch batteries when people don't even wear watches anymore, except us old folks, is no longer a Walmart counter service. If I was in the market for high end jewelry and wanted the lifelong service for my investment, I would be very secure doing business here. This is not a mall jewelry store with bright lights making every diamond seem to call your name. This is a first class, no kidding high end place where you get what you pay for. I took a few photos but was worried about appearing to be casing the joint, so no actual offerings photographed. You will just have to go and see for yourself!
