A dank garage greets people who want to escape the crowded, bright white waiting room. Not pictured is the dark sidewalk blocked by smokers.

The Pittsburgh station is dismal and uninviting. There are beautiful photos, but what one gets is a large white, well lit waiting area downstairs. Hopefully someone pulled the switch on the escalator so arrivals/departures can get to and from the track level without a struggle. Because of a peculiar disability, I ended up getting trapped upstairs with a huge cold wind from the air conditioner unit. When I did brave the door to outside so I could go see the beautiful building, I was met with a group of smokers who blocked the dark sidewalk leading away from the dank parking garage. Maybe daylight would have made me feel safer to venture past the smokers. I went back up in the elevator to the freezer, and when I eventually needed the facilities, everything was roped off, including the exit from the elevator. So back up I went to wait with legs crossed. Both arriving and departing trains were late, but I expect that. I did not expect to feel so unsafe and disregarded, nor did I expect to be barked at by station attendants when I did not fit in their herd routine. If they do not allow people to be in certain areas, they should post signs or be more friendly and explain things nicely. They also need to open up more of the station instead of cramming everyone into that room. It was quite crowded.

As someone who is a new Amtrak traveler, and legally blind, union station is very chaotic, and hard to navigate. Unless there is someone there to direct you, you have no guidance on where to go. Parking is a nightmare, unless there is room in the lot at the station. The staff that is there is a nice enough, and helped me get to where I needed to be. Just wish there were more food/drink options at these Amtrak stations.

This is a pretty lame train station for a city like Pittsburgh. I couldn't check my bags at 4:35am for a 5:20am train 8 hour train trip. I spoke to 2 different agents who told me specifically twice that I could check my bags in anytime between 12am & 7:45am. Oh well, the snippy little lady behind the double glass window that you have to yell at just said nope it's after 4:30 it's too late to check your bag. It doesn't specify that fact on the ticket, on the Amtrak site or anywhere that I can find and is contrary to the agents on the phone but oh well. I swear it boggles the mind how customers can mean so little to an outfit that is bleeding money and suffering cutbacks and employee buy outs. Does anybody think that having the federal government as a partner might be a flippin' bad idea?????

I took my first train ride in the USA last week. I had priced bus, air and train and train even beat bus. I had a presentation to prep so I thought sitting on a train would be nice. Flying to Harrisburg that included 3! stopovers was $681 and it was not a last minute pricing. Boarding went well. The dining cart is cute. Staff was friendly. The cars are clean and comfortable. WiFI worked nicely as did the charging. I went business class and that included free coffee. The scenery is nice, especially the famous Horseshoe Curve. I have taken trains in Europe a number of times and Europe is superior but, still, it is a nice way to travel.

Old train station .. union station the locals call it Penn Station

The old train station was visible from our Hotel .. this old domed structure is very interesting and great spot for photos. walked here to check it out from our upper level room at the Double tree hotel. We walked and got some dinner and then returned at night as it was lite .. don't know if that was the safe thing to do but we had no trouble.

The station is fairly dirty, the vending machines often take your money and there's no other options. I would avoid this station if you can.

There is often police there (not just as security but responding to an incident). And there always seems to be something that isn't working. One time I was at the station an escalator wasn't working. Another time it was the elevator that was out of order. Overall, it is a fairly nicely designed station. Except the walk exiting the T does seem really long and can feel eerie when it is fairly deserted in the later hours. It serves its purpose as a station, but definitely be vigilant when using this station.

I can remember this place always having people around it and the number of stories about this station on the news. Such a breeding ground for weird ish in the city. Wasn't any different when I came through here. I intentionally got off at this station to venture out to grab a bite to eat. However, I should have stayed on a ways to find that bite. Exiting here you go down a what feels like a dreadful long hallway. That is after getting off in probably one of the darkest stations I have ever been to. You get closer and closer to the exit and noise, accompanied by a weird smell hits you. You then realize that that smell is not a smell you want to be smelling. That smell is the smell of unwashed, of public restrooms wherever you want, of too little cleaning. I will echo a few things here. Be aware of your surroundings. There is a lot going on here. Yes, there is a police presence here, but most times it feels like they are just passing through or don't care. Right inside the entrance, it is pretty, but don't let that false sense or welcoming blur your senses.

On the inside at least. Once you exit outside, that's a different story. You exit out to parking lots. That is until they build up the area around here when demand comes rolling in. To say that this serves the North Side is kind of a farce. It is more like the North Shore, and if you are up for the walk, the North Side. But, like I said, the feel of this makes it really feel like a proper station. The station is well underground and when you come up from the platform the first time, it feels like you are entering a glitzy building. You then have to come up once more to reach street level. It doesn't have as a great view like the last station on the line. But it does dump you out into an area that can get busy. Closer to PNC Park than it is to Heinz Field, short walk from the waterfront and the Warhol.

It's located not very heavily used by commuters but there are some. The station serves all three lines - the Red, Blue and Silver - between Allegheny Station (inbound) and Gateway Station (outbound) towards either South Hills Village or Library depending on which line. It is an underground station with escalators and elevators. The station is handicapped accessible. As an underground station, it is protected from the elements. An island platform with two tracks, it is at the end of the Allegheny River Tunnel which is quite cool. The station is part of the "free zone" so there is no ticket check here but there are ticket vending machines for those who might be traveling to stations that are in the "paid zone."
