A little trivia: Wheaton Metro Station has the longest subway escalator in the Western Hemisphere (and in the US). The escalator is 230 feet long, with a vertical rise of 115 feet. For the most part, Wheaton's Metro Station is pretty decent (relative to living in NYC for a couple of decades). With access to the red line (obviously) and a large number of DC Metro and Montgomery County bus lines, I guess this could be considered a major transportation hub. This metro station has direct access to various shops (e.g, Westfield Mall), restaurants, and bars. I will recommend being careful because Georgia Avenue can be a bit of a mess for pedestrians. Compared to other metro stations in the DMV area, I have not noticed a large transient population; however, it can get a little sketchy at night. If you are new to the area, it might be a bit confusing to get the hang of the MANY bus bays, but you will get the hang of it in no time. If you have physical issues with using steep ramps escalators, elevators are located across the street from the main entrance. read more

Wheaton is awesome. Amazing parking experience useful local and DC buses. Trains to DC rarely late, but one day all the elevators and the MASSIVE escalators were out so I could not go to DC at 5:07 am other than that it's awesome read more

Wheaton has a Metro station. It can be annoying to get into. Very deep and a long escalator which sucks. Lots of shopping around. This is across the street from the big mall. Fairly clean. It serves the Red Line. This station is so deep that the escalators take several minutes. Annoying but it can be fun. The look from the top can freak you out. Outside there's a large area for busses. There's also a large parking garage that has decent prices. It has a lot of places to eat and shop around. It's across the street from the Wheaton Mall. This has mostly chain restaurants but there's good stuff too. read more

Wheaton continues to evolve around the busy Metro station near the eastern top of the Red Line. I find this station difficult to navigate despite its famous escalator. The huge parking building and distant Wheaton Mall add to the confusion. To exit the station from fare turnstiles, watch the signage carefully. Go right for the East Entrance. This is also designated as the Kiss and Ride Lot which opens on Reedie Drive near the Safeway. You will have to climb the spiral staircase or endure the grimy elevator from the mezzanine to street level. For West Entrance, go left from the fare turnstiles to Wheaton Bus Bays A-E and Viers Mill Rd pedestrian overpass to Wheaton Mall. read more

Literally just came here for the longest escalator in the western hemisphere! Getting off the train, station seemed well-lit and clean. An easy walk to the middle tube that will take you to the escalators. There are three of them, with two running in the same direction depending on the time of day. Standing on it, it will take almost 3 minutes to get from one end to the other. It's quite a journey! Getting to the top after going up, you wonder how the whole thing doesn't just break and send you barreling down. Anyway, just for the transportation geek in me, riding this was fun and glad I did the experience. read more

I've never seen a station platform before that is bisected by an escalator, but this one is. The walk time from the garage to the platform is about 3-4 minutes because after parking on level 3 (the skywalk connecting to Metro is on level 3), crossing the skywalk, going down two flights, walking across to the entrance, through the long tunnel, and then down a very, very long escalator takes quite some time. The parking garage is a tricky to find. One entrance is off Viers Mill Road, as if you were going toward the mall. There are signs but can still be difficult to locate the garage entrance at first. There seems to be a plethora of spots here versus Glenmont, the terminus of Red Line, and daily parking is $4.35 here ($5.05 at Glenmont). The neighborhood has shaped up since I've lived in the area and improving, which is nice. All kinds of young and established professionals. Diverse! read more

Come here if you want to witness one of the largest escalators. Good luck if the escalator stops running as it could be tough to walk up. However, they do have backups as there are 3 escalators at this station. Entrances to the metro can be found across the street from the Wheaton mall and across the street on Georgia ave by the Safeway grocery store. They do have garage parking here.However, from what I seen, they never have issues with spaces as there will always be spaces to park. read more

It's never a good sign when the "wall art" in the station is an awareness promotion for prevention of stolen phones and electronics. A 2007 report released by the WMATA ranked the Wheaton Metro station 14 of 86 stations system-wide in reported ''Part 1" criminal offenses that same year. With that said, this is not 2007 and I have had FEW incidents in or right outside the station. The station needs more security presence given the "longest escalator in the western-hemisphere". Camera-shmera means little when stuff happens down that far. This station does seem a little sketchy when the crowd is sparse. My point: stay aware no matter what station you are at. AT&T does not have cellphone reception at this metro station and a security guard would be helpful. read more

Wheaton Metro Escalator- you make Maryland, nay The United States Of America Proud! Did you know! that the Wheaton Metro Escalator is the longest escalator in the Western Hemisphere. Yes, that's right, the entire Western part of the known world has one long-arse escalator, and it's right in the MD Burbs. The dizzying depths of the Wheaton Metro Escalator drop you 230 feet down into Satan's belly. To give you an idea, that's like a 21-22 story building. Be very careful on this escalator, you are 1 slight trip from falling down 367 steps of unapologetic sharp metal teeth. When I was younger, I remember trying to hurry down this escalator. I'm surprised I'm here with you today to talk about it. Wheaton, home of delicious Thai food, Asian Cuisine, Latin in all it's shapes and forms, and the longest dang escalator in the freakin' Western Hemisphere! Be proud, real proud! The Wheaton metro is steps away from the Westfield mall so it is very convenient. It also has a bus depot to catch any of the Maryland area buses. It's in the heart of downtown Wheaton so it is a pretty accessible station. They just installed a bike station as well. Be advised! Not all trains go to Wheaton. Some trains end service at Silver Springs! On the weekdays during heavy traffic hours a train will come every 6-8 minutes. But on the weekends a train might come every 15-25 minutes (seriously it's ridiculous and sometimes longer)! This underground station (great for the winter) has the longest elevator out of all the metro stations. My daily workout includes going down the escalator in the morning and trying to get up it in the evening without stopping. read more

(even though WMATA has systemic issues, I'm not going to knock the Wheaton Station for it because it's not the people at this station's fault) It does what it needs to do. Not extremely good or extremely bad. The station is clean. I like how it's close to the Wheaton Mall and underground so I don't have to deal with bad weather outside. All three escalators work whenever I'm there. Especially important for this station because the escalators are so long, and there is a line to get on the up escalators even when both are working (so it would be annoying to walk the long escalator as if it were a staircase or to have double the line at one up escalator if the other breaks.) The escalator makes me nervous but so does almost everything else so take that with a grain of salt. The elevator seems kind of hidden to me, but I am probably just used to the Forest Glen Station, which only has elevators. I found the layout of the station/parking garage/skywalk etc. confusing, but that's probably because I'm a dumbass. The skywalk and some stairways seem like a great place for someone to rob you because they're small, confined spaces that not many people (let alone Metro employees) go in, and there don't seem to be many (if any) security cameras. I originally gave this place a 3. Then I upgraded it to a 4 because IMO it isn't plagued with the problems other Metro stations have... the escalators haven't been "under construction" for 3 years, I don't think it reeks of urine or cigarette smoke, and there are fewer solicitors (working for businesses/nonprofits/political groups). But then I remembered how at this station strangers don't leave me alone (but i want them to leave me alone) so i put it back to a 3. Congratulations if you read this whole thing. read more

Today was a decent day for this station. For once, the station didn't smell like urine. I refuse to take the elevator at this station because it usually has human waste on it and smells repulsive Everything was clean today including the parking lot so I have no complaints. read more

What an escalator, I spent my birthday descending the escalator, what a day. The station is clean overall, good number of gates and easy access to the station. There is an unnecessarily slow elevator and three of the longest escalators in the western hemisphere, in case you did not know this. Overall the area is OK. I would not send my kids around per se to hang out in Wheaton. It is on the way but not yet there. We parked in the garage on a Sunday and it was dead. There were people on the bridge panhandling and they were aggressive enough that you could not just walk by them and what seemed to be a gang at the base of the side near the station. So lock your car, dont google Wheaton garage 2015, and keep your keep sakes near to your bod and you should be OK. It does take a hot minute for the train to come but nothing too bad. If you can have it your way, go to Forrest Glen down the road, much nicer area although lacks a garage, it is the deepest station only accessible by elevator (I think stairs are emergency only) and I like it more. read more

The Wheaton Metro station is very convenient easy to navigate and exceptionally clean. I found the system a little bit complicated but that's not an error of Wheaton station that's just the design of the DC Metro train pass. Easy access to area shops and the nice thing is the mall is right across the road. I highly recommend the use of this station as a great means of transportation. read more

This one doesn't have any major pluses or minuses -- there's plenty of parking, with a garage next to the mall and other ones nearby. The most notable feature is that it has the longest escalator in the Western Hemisphere (you can look it up!) Indeed, it is long -- fun to ride once or twice, but I wouldn't want to have to use it every day. read more

Wheaton is a good station, considering other red line stations. You're underground, so it tends to be a little warmer than the ground or elevated stations. It's generally clean most of the time and not too crowded. During the week at off peak times, however, they seem to be continually doing track maintenance, so you'll get to the platform and notice that there's not even any information on the next car. All of a sudden, the train will show up and that's it, but you could be waiting up to 20-25 minutes before it comes. The only thing I dislike about this station is that it has one of those looooooong escalators to the top. Definitely takes awhile. However, I do find that this station is convenient to other transit, restaurants, the mall, and grocery stores (hello Safeway across the street!) read more

Wheaton station, my stomping ground. Been going to this station since middle school. No new routes, same old, same old. The only new thing is cabs are no longer accessible as they use to be. If you are lucky, you will see two cabs waiting for customers. read more
