Amvets is probably my favorite place to shop at. It's been a while so I don't know how new this perk is, but they started having this discount card where you can add points to it every time you shop and the points will take money off. Depending on how many points you have. Which am totally for. They always have a good selection of items from glassware to clothing and shoes. They also have furniture as well. If you enter from the front, there are dressers all the way in the back which are in decent to good shape. Some need more love than others but nothing too bad. There's also a small amount of cookware, mugs, lamps, kids toys and clothes, and other items. The value of the items are still in a good condition. I've actually gotten a pressure cooker there a while ago for about $15 from what I remember. The last time I went, I got two pairs of pj pants (which one is a replacement of one I actually own), a mug, a big sign that has two quotes on it (one side says 'this is our happy place' and the other side has a pick up truck on it and says 'pumpkin patch farm grown pumpkins. Hayrides/apple cider open daily', and a Christmas platter for about $18. It would have been about $20 but I got a little bit over a $1 off because of their discount card I got. They also have couches and chairs as well. It's a great place. The downside is that part of the parking lot is on the side, and in the back. But fortunately they have an entrance in the back so you don't have to walk around. read more

I drove over and donated half a car load two weeks ago. I am 70 years old with a weak bladder. The young latin woman at the register would not let me use the bathroom. I had to per outside next to my car. Very gross and unsat way to treat a Vietnam era veteran donating to your facility. Holy shit, the building this "store" (using that term loosely) is in should be demolished. Should've been years ago. I have NO idea how this kind of store is ALLOWED to be in business, which is disgusting for both customers & staff. It's filthy inside & out. The stained carpeting was ripped out, nothing to replace it, just the concrete. It's like...there's no sense of pride or integrity whatsoever by whoever owns the building/store. I feel dirty being in here, like you can see the particles of dirt in the air & I leave feeling itchy. Yeah its a thrift store that (supposedly) helps veterans but SHUDDER. I can't believe people willingly want to work here. It has to be the most depressing store I've ever been in. Apparently you can't use points (on the app) you have stored if you're not spending more than what you have. IE my mother was spending $2 something & I had $4+ in points. Couldn't use the points lol. Not entirely sure what the 2 employees were saying since they were speaking in Spanish. This came after we donated 4-5 bags worth of stuff. It gets two stars because they support vets. Otherwise, I'd give it zero. Whoever said it was clean was either lying or not paying attention. This place is filthy. I've been to a lot of thrift stores and this one made me feel gross. It smelled. There was no AC which made it worse. The carpet was disgusting. Even the items on the shelves were dirty. It made me appreciate how Savers really makes an effort to feel more like a real store and not someone's dingy basement. It's also it's just a lot of junk not one wants. Things in terrible condition, broken, very dirty. And the prices? What? it's just a waste of time. There is a lot of room for improvement. Seriously, run and vacuum and clean up a bit. Spray some Lysol. Care about your appearance at least a little. read more

3.5 stars - Honestly this is a really good thrift store but I have a few issues with it. There are actually a lot of nice clothes and items here and the staff here is friendly. Unfortunately; every-time i have came here there is like one, maybe two people working and running the whole store. I feel bad that these people are so overworked. It also upsets me how people who are "donating" clothes sometimes just throw literal garbage in the bags with their clothes and don't even put it in the donation box. They sometimes even just dump clothes on the ground outside in front of the box so the understaffed staff have to deal with that. There is also alot of dust inside so if you have an issue with dust, here's a heads up (but that is almost every thrift store you go to). I know staffing is hard to find, especially now, and I know you cannot control the people donating from the community - but these are just things I have noticed. Like I said, actually a lot of great items here and is very helpful to any community to have low priced high quality items. I would recommend coming here but the review is more just for general awareness. read more

This place opened fairly recently and I usually swing through about once a month or so. They have a decent amount of books for her to go through and I usually skim the movies and electronics dept. Sadly the electronics dept is lacking and I only got a movie or video game I wanted here or there. But it's so close to me it's worth the shot of stopping in. The store is always busy and fairly clean, the employees are pretty helpful and I would consider this one of the better thrift stores on the Island. Check it out! read more

AMVETS has 2 things that NO OTHER big box thrift store has: 1) Lower prices and 2) FRIENDLY workers ! The girls at the front counter are so nice! They also do duo-color tickets discount days: one color is 25% off and another color is 50% .. ALL ON THE SAME DAY ! (The only other place that does that on Long Island is Salvation Army in East Northport-- and that place is like a mini Amvets ). Savers = NO discounts ever . Goodwill = If any- the discounts are all on SUPER inflated prices - rendering any discounts worthless. AMVETS tends to be smellier and dirtier than other thrifts: BUT if you are brave and you want cheap prices; deal with it. This ain't a pretty neighborhood either. AMVETS also tends to be more about clothes than "bric-a-brac" and hardly any toys here. The glassware is dull and the DVDs and CDs are a mess. There was TONS of picked-thru-till-the-bones-are-clean vinyl records; so if you like Christmas music, opera and that All in the Family TV show record - come here ! If you think you're gonna find every Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd record in mint shape- keep dreaming, ding-bats. You'll pretty much find useful stuff here but probably no FUN stuff . If you're an eBay & Poshmark re-seller - you will do OK with clothes and shoes only. (Even though clothes sell oh so slowly these days !) BIG P.S. I love that this thrift shop supports veterans. With its huge selection of clothes and household goods, you're bound to find something here. I came to drop off some clothes that don't spark joy (Marie Kondo would be proud). It was an easy process: l left my items in a shopping cart and wheeled them over to the cashier, who offered me a tax receipt. I didn't have a chance to look through the rows and rows of clothings, but I found these amazing wicker baskets for your modern bohemian room at the low, low price of 79 cents to $1.79. With specials on colored tags that change daily, you can potentially save 25% or 50% off items as well. At the cashier, make sure to ask about their $4 off $15 minimum coupon. this is the best thrift store on the island they have some real gems here and I never leave empty handed. Aside from clothes they have a lot of couches, handbags, old jewelry, and appliances too so if you're in the area this is definitely a worthwhile place to stop. read more

Been donating to them for years. I was going to be in that area, so I decided to take a look. Plenty of parking ; store easy to find; an access ramp in the back. Staff was friendly and plenty of shopping carts were available.Prices very reasonable, especially clothing. However, the carpet was nasty and the whole store has a dingy look. Also, the stock was unimpressive. Maybe because of COVID they haven't been able to stock new items-there was a crew outside unloading a truck and there was a fair amount of noise comng from the stock area. But on my visit the items just looked tired. Also the women's clothing was not well organized-sizes were mixed up, sweaters put with blouses, etc. Glassware was also in separate sections scattered throughout. I will continue to donate but will not go back to shop. read more

Have been thrifting for the past 10 years. Not because its cool but because its the only way I can afford to buy clothing 99% of the time. Long Island USED to have some great thrift stores for clothes. Josie's in Hempstead was the spot, I still have clothes I wear on the regular from finds there, some of the best clothing I have ever owned. All the remaining Salvation Army stores sell clothing that looks like human shit was smeared on them and Saver's is good for your electronics and househould items. Unique was AMAZING when they first came to the Island in both pricing and selection. I am not a television viewer but I hear the reality show market has completely exploited antiques and vintage items as a whole have skyrocketed. Hipster infection of the nation... but anyway onto AmVets. This place is situated on Sunrise Highway and you can drive by it without even realizing it if not paying attention like I did the first time I went there. It is right after the Great Neck Rd exit/entrance ramp overpass and sneaks up on you. The location I think has kept it kind of low key. Prices are more than affordable, I would say the best pricing on LI. Selection is hit or miss but they shine in Clothing and Electronics/Appliances. Men check out the tee shirts, women check out the dresses. Their is a hint of soul in this place that lacks now a days in some other thrift locations. If you frequent thrift stores for the psychedelic randomness and tunnels back in time this store is for you. Go here with a $20 bill and leave with a full bag or two. read more

I consider myself an avid thrifter, thrifting from manhattan, brooklyn and suffolk county. I came upon this store, hopeful that the selection would be wonderful because of it's size. It is by far the largest thrift store I have seen. Everything is organized wonderfully, I walked away with quite a few great items! A Gap denim chambray button up ($4.98) an angry birds graphic tee ($2.98) a men's polo sweatpants that I LOVE ($4.98) and a cute vintage skirt ($4.98) {See PICS} I also bough a few stephen king books. I had to stop myself from buying more. Honestly, I love their men's section more than the womens. I like to go to the men's side for sweatpants and graphic tees, I found MANY! I definitely could see myself racking up quite a few things from here in the future. read more

This place was THE place 2-3 years ago but new management came in and pretty much doubled everything. Examples Moldy Warped Vinyl Records are $1.99 (yeah, ok) Hardcover books you can get from Amazon for $.49 + 3.99 Shipping are $6 Coffee mugs for $2.99? Dirty Toys and Games are at least 10X too much for used Electronics are nasty now - lots of waffle irons, hair curlers and misc dirty junk In the past I scored a Laserdisc Player for $20, misc old electronics, a few dozen records, misc clothing and some interesting coffee mugs that were always $.99. I walked into Amvets Thrift Store around 8 pm on a weekday when they closed at 9 to drop off some donations. A very polite gentleman named Travis was at the front desk. He informed me that dropping off donations on the far side of the store stopped an hour earlier, but still happily allowed me to bring in my donations. He even helped me get everything inside and brought it all to the correct department. Travis was AWESOME. He made my experience great and is the reason for this review today. Keep him around. Seriously the best thrift shop in town. They offer very very affordable and good quality pieces of clothes (divide into short sleeve, long sleeve, long pants, short pants, dress, swimsuits, jeans, and by size of course). Just make sure you keep in mind what kind of styles you are looking for and what colors look best in you. They offer discount for students on Tuesday, veteran discount, and coupon discount for next purchase. The staff is very friendly. The fitting rooms are big enough. Nothing to complain really. Me and my friend went today and came back with 4-5 pieces for each of us. All for 20$/ person. I would totally recommend checking this store out. read more

I am so annoyed right now. I scheduled a pickup of furniture and household items for last Tuesday. No one showed up. When I called Wednesday morning, I was told the manager Anna was in a meeting and would call me back. When I didn't hear from her by the afternoon, I reached out to her. She said the truck was full and that they (the drivers) should have called me. She then offered to have them come that day, but I had a dumpster delivered that morning. Okay. Then we made an appt. for this Thursday and she said she would call today to confirm. Well, guess what? No phone call. I called and was told she was gone for the day. Then the call center tried to look up the appt. P.S. she never made it. Now I'm scrambling to get this stuff out of my house by the end of the week because I'm moving. I am a Midwesterner, and one of the only things that the heartland does better than NYC is the thrift stores. Imagine this: a huge warehouse full of clothes and housewares that gets all the goods when granny croaks or when that fabulous gal with more money than you finally moves away. You can browse the racks in peace because the store is huge and the mass populace is at the mall spending all that extra money they accumulate from the ridiculously low price of living trying to find validation in some sick new threads, which will end up in the thrift store in a few months because we all know that doesn't work. Did I mention that every item is a couple dollars, or sometimes even just a few pennies? Suffice it to say that my thrifting itch has never been scratched in New York, which is why I ended up at this Amvets thrift store on a bargain hunting day trip to Long Island. The moment I walked in, I forgot all about the cramped, expensive, and disappointing NYC thrift shops and tumbled down the rabbit hole of bargains galore. The store is huge, and while there was a nice hustle and bustle from other shoppers that supported my high spirits, browsing was easy and there was plenty of space to search the aisles without getting too close for comfort. There are two sale tags, one that is 50% off and one that is 25% off. I didn't see very many of the 50% off color but 2 of the 4 items I purchased were 25% off. The clothing is organized by SIZE, which always makes life so much easier, and featured a good mix of all eras including name brand current fashions. Most shirts were 4.98 and most dresses were 7.98, and while that may be on par with pricing I've dissed they run so many specials and discounts that I ended up with some true bargains. The housewares were very fun to browse and had some great antique/vintage items that were still in the price range of a dollar or two. There were several adorable hardshell vintage suitcases in the $3-$7, which I admired but left for someone else to find (maybe you?). The store was very clean and well organized and the staff was friendly. I browsed for about an hour and a half and loved every minute of it. I ended up purchasing 3 shirts, one of which was a new-with-tags Eileen Fisher tunic that retailed at $98, and one pair of black Keds. The Keds were 2.98 and all 3 shirts were 4.98 each, but two of them were 25% off and combined with the check-in offer of $4 off a $15 purchase, my grand total came to $12. They had a few signs up advertising a 50% off sale the following Wednesday, and had I known about that I would have postponed my trip! If you're a serious bargain hunter you may want to call ahead and see if they have any upcoming sales. Regardless, in an age of sketchy Goodwill operations and a homophobic Salvation Army, you can't beat the cause of helping veterans while you thrift! WHAT HAPPENED TO THIS PLACE? If I was yelping two years ago, I wouldve given this place 5 stars. I was here during this location's grand opening a few years ago and I spent over $100 each time I visited. I was super excited to shop here when I came back to NY - I literally took the subway to Penn Station then the LIRR to Babylon and then Uber'd over to the AMVETS to get there (2 hrs) - and I was SOOOOOO disappointed to see this place filled with overpriced CRAP! Everything used to be a set price. And people had carts full of goodies to purchase. Now everything is individually priced. Like... who's paying $7 for a used t-shirt? I am an avid thrifter. 99% of my wardrobe is thrifted - alot of things I still own were purchased a few years ago from this store location. So, it makes me sad to see this place has gone to hell. read more

I enjoyed shopping here in the past but since new management took over, the prices have almost doubled. The racks have become overpacked as it is clear no one is willing to pay their current prices. T-shirts used to be under $2 but are now individually priced and many are marked as high as $7.99 for mid-level brands like Gap and H&M. I will say that the staff remains very friendly including the manager but he really needs to take a step back, look at the overpacked racks, and rethink his current pricing. read more

I use to come here for great deals but now every item is priced way to high i would rather go buy new clothing and items at the store not used because they basically sell items here at regular store prices. this is very disappointing. Last month I found out that they were under new management, which I guessed because there were new price tags and everything seemed more expensive. Very spacious store with lots to look at. Wonderful Tee Shirt collection, had a few great finds. Prices were good and on the cheap side. Certain sections were lacking items. The women's section was doing much for me personally, but there something for every style. I enjoyed my experience! read more
