An Chau's seems to constantly be expanding or renovating, and when you see the items they stock, it's easy to see why they're so popular! If you're looking for a hard-to-find treat, or spice, or sauce, or beverage, or fresh fruit/vegetable, chilled meat... and the list really goes on. And it's at An Chau's! There are just so many good things packed on the store shelves, it's actually a little difficult not to walk out with more than you'd gone looking for. They've become a regular stop, and the place to stock up on anything Asian, Halal, Indian, and some Jamaican foods as well. My friends took me out of my comfort zone to this neighborhood Asian market on Bailey Ave. I really didn't know much about how to go about shopping here since I'm not an expert on the cuisine, but it sure was fun exploring. My favorite purchase was these coffee candies from Indonesia, tasted just like a cold brew. I wish they had some detailed descriptions on some of these products so "Rookies" like me could have an idea on what the product is like. And the store is a bit cramped. However, I did find this place to be very cool and authentic and I will be back to get more of those candies and try a few other items! (By the way my order came to $6.66, uh oh lol) read more

Stop by on our way home to Watertown to see what they have to offer, first thing I saw was the Lady's choice (tuna spread),, were looking forward to get home so My kids and I can try it out and big disappointment it's taste like expired, sure enough the expiration date looks like it's been removed. This place is a great resource and hidden gem for not only local restaurants, but also the do it yourself asian food lobing kind of people out there! If you want to try your hand at home made sushi rolls or pork buns, or dim sum this place has what you need. From bamboo rolling pads to siriacha brand sauces and salsas you will find it all and more! Know what youre looking for and dont be afraid to try something new. The selections are vast and chances are most of the things you see may appear foreign. However if you love asian foods and frequent local establishments, chances are you've consumed items from this shop! Folks at the counter don't seem to speak very good english but are willing to help you find what you need. Have a picture handy if it's something specific you need. That helped me greatly when searching for sticky sushi rice. Definately a cool spot to just explore. Be advised, the area this place sits in is high traffic and kind of sketchy. There. You see it and instantly that weird salivating response kicks in: A new Asian recipe that's begging to be prepared at home. But WAIT! There's a catch. The recipe calls for fresh herbs? And not just the mundane stuff like thyme. But the recipe calls for "exotic" fresh herbs that will not be carried at Wegman's (and will inevitably cost an arm and a leg too since its not widely available). "Argh" you think to yourself....fine time to develop a delusional affair with your kitchen and think you can tackle any new recipe and so it goes....you resign yourself to spending more on fresh herbs than the rest of the ingredients. Enter The Dragon. Wait..my bad. Enter An Chau and their availability and range of fresh Asian herbs. You can tell the fresh herb stock turns over often because I've yet to see any wilted ones here over 4+ visits. The prices are a bargain - Lemongrass is $2.99/lb. Mung beans (the kind to put in summer rolls and pho) is $0.99 a lb, Korean pears $1.99 each, and three varieties of mint are $1 a bag (mint, ginger, and fish). They carry fresh Thai basil, mini hot Thai chili peppers, white beech mushrooms, Enoki mushrooms, potato leaves, red spinach, fresh tamarind, and other produce. But we're not done folks. Oh no. An Chau packs a lot into the store. They also carry a decent size selection of Jamaican goods too like Grace brand Peanut porridge and Johnny cake mix. I do miss me some authentic Johnny cakes from my island travels. :) If ever you hear of someone in need of natures version of Viagra you could work up the courage to buy the Spicy Hills Farm Mannish Water Ram/Goat mix sold her for $3.80 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mannish_water). The shelves also have things that are more adventurous like the food you'd catch Andrew Zimmerman eating on Bizarre Foods: pickled salted snake head fish in brine. They also have frozen pho meat balls and all the other pho ingredients to make some at home. Or you can just enjoy some pho at Pho 99 2 blocks down and then head over to An Chau. I'm afraid to admit this (as a wannabe foodie and pretty health conscious eater).....but I get instant pho here. You can buy Oh Ricey brand instant pho (beef and chicken) for less than $1 a packet. Hey...sometimes life is busy and you want to have something that has "essence" of pho without driving 5 miles to get it. You can buy soup base, noodles, and bean sprouts here if you want to make it "fresher" than the instant stuff. They also sell homemade baked sesame balls for less than $1 each. read more

Love going here! I'm glad it's so close to home so that I don't need to always go to the bigger marker on Niagara Falls boulevard. They have a good selection of ingredients and snacks. My sister and I will experiment and try different drinks from here. They also have spicy noodles which is a bonus! An Chau is smaller than Ni Hoowa and T&T but it's has everything you need in an Asian Supermarket. Despite having less space, they seem to have more diversity in their products. Most Asian markets are mostly Chinese but An Chau has a lot of stuff I haven't seen before such as ingredients for African cooking as well as stuff from all over Asia. If you're looking for hard-to-find Asian products in Buffalo, this might be your place. read more
