I know they say grocery and deli. But I'm use to groceries including milk, eggs, and bread atleast. Even the deli I'm looking for cold cuts and other meats. You won't find that here, what you will find though. Is some can goods, snacks, candy, and beverages. Right away you realize your coming to Montes for their cook food. It can get quite crowded, and they do a good job and limiting how many people can enter. Menus are posted, and the prices is beyond reasonable. Pork dinner- comes with rice and a side salad(if you choose). You have two options for the pork meal, fried or pulled. I ordered the pulled pork. Flavors were wonderful. My only complaint would be, that there was to much tough pieces of meat. Also to much fatty pieces mixed into the meat. Pastelillo- Beef and cheese (they do offer other varieties) I like how much filling there was. The perfect beef and cheese ratio. My next visit I will try the chicken meal. The food is so good! I've never been disappointed. This place is much better than the "other" place over on Niagara st . The pastelitos here aren't filled with grease and have more flavor. The rice and beans are amazing too. The pinchos (chicken on a stick) is my favorite followed by the fried pork. Service is quick. The line is always long but the workers get everyone in and out within minutes. It is a small grocery store but you would never know because of all the food constantly coming out of the kitchen freshly made. If you haven't already, please stop here and grab a meal. Another place that i've been meaning to get to and finally did. Had the BBQ chicken on skewers and rice. Two huge chunks of breast meat on each of 2 skewers with a different BBQ from what I 'm used to, and i liked it very much. The rice, which had some beans in it, too, was also very good. Shortly after finishing eating (I couldn't eat it all), however, I was incredibly thirsty and drank so much water over the next several hours; my guess is that the food was salty, altho not so salty that it tasted salty. That's the only reason for a 3 star rating, rather than a higher rating. Usually, I use very little salt, so am somewhat sensitive to it. The person who waited on me was very kind and patient in interpreting the Spanish language menu for me. read more

Sooo ...I happen to be downtown with a friend and they asked if I had ever been to this place for Pastiletos, I said I hadn't and she directed me to this place. It is a small store (delicatessen) that sells almost everything INCLUDING some really great food. There is a small kitchen in towards the back, where you can see your food being prepared. The menu is straight forward and pretty simple. There are the meat pies that come in different flavors chicken, beef, beef and cheese. They have rice and beans, roasted or fried pork, chicken on a stick and more. For someone that isn't sure you can order it by the dollar amount or lb. Most of the selections can be found in the display case in front. The young woman working was extremely nice and very patient. I wanted to give it a try but wasn't sure what to select. I ended up with the beef and cheese Pastiletos and some of the roasted pork. The food was DELISH! The flavors were good and it was a pretty unique experience. Was introduced to this place by a friend, a lil bodega located on Swan St. I was told they have the best Spanish food around lol, that alone had me all in. Upon arrival I noticed the nice sign so I knew I was at the right place. And you can just smell the seasonings as you approach the door lol. I opted in for the 2 pastelillos dinner which was $11 and consisted of two pastelillos of your choice: chicken/cheese, pizza, beef/cheese rice and beans and a salad. Dropped in at the suggestion of a relative who was craving pastelitos while we were in the area, and I was not disappointed. It's a small corner store and deli. When you walk in, you hit the food counter, and there is plenty to choose from. They sell dinners with rice, beans, and meat of your choosing that are definitely reasonably price, cheap even. Chicken on a stick and pastelitos. Lots of quick but delicious food to pick up, and it's all filling. You can request a couple of dollars worth of the meat, and they'll accommodate you. We got a few of the beef and cheese pastelitos and a few bucks worth of the pork. They don't put it in anything fancy, just some paper bags. The pastelitos were good, fresh and full. The pastry was fried just right. They weren't too hard. They put a nice portion of meat and cheese inside, so it isn't hollow, which seems to be a frequent problem if you don't find decent pastelitos. The pork was good too, tender and flavorful. It's a bit too fatty for my liking though, and a tad salty. The service was good too. It's a very casual spot to pick up food, not somewhere you sit in and dine, and obviously, it's a mini grocery too. Which is great since you can grab a drink with your food. read more

The store with a surprise inside I first found out abiut yhis place by mistake. I was in the neighborhood and was just looking for a corner store. Instead, I found that and great Spanish food. You can get a dinner for under $10 and it's a good amount of food. The food is authentic and tasty. I usually get the 2 pastelitos with beans rice and salad. The only thing I kept asking myself the entire time I enjoyed this meal was: Why did I just find this place? After moving to Buffalo, I've had a handful of Puerto Rican spots to dine in that were healthier, leaner and cheaper to dine at. However, sometimes your craving a meal that tastes like a grandmother slaved away at making. Monte's provides that experience for me! The rice isn't just a flavor packet addition to rice and the chicken isn't just baked season-less. The hearty meal came with tomato and sofrito flavored rice with pidgeon peas, a large baked flavorful & tender chicken breast and slow cooked beans. A little crispy lettuce and tomato to round out the saltiness of the meal. I could have enjoyed the meal as is, but no meal is complete without a pastellio! They did not disappoint. And speaking of flavor, Montes Grocery and Deli delivers said flavor straight to your mouth. Lunchtime can be tricky. After all, Buffalo has a lot of choices to choose from depending on where you are in the city. But if you have the time to leave all of those other places you're near and head to Montes instead, then take the trek friend.... You won't be disappointed. Unlike many other area Spanish restaurants (specifically Puerto Rican), Montes menu is smaller, but food is whipped out much more quickly. You can be in and out of the deli in under 10 minutes during busy times, and toting bags of pastaeillos back to the office with you. But screw Time, I'll just assume take all the time in the world here because the food here is stupendous. The rice and beans might be the best I've ever had, and I believe I've visited more Spanish speaking countries than I have English. It leaves little doubt in one's mind how Spanish explorers conquered most of the word.... better cooking than bangers and mash and salted fish (yuck). The roasted chicken can be purchased either as a half, quarter or on sticks with your meal. I'll leave that one up to you but my recommendation is when they ask which one you'd like, your answer should be "Yes" (or "Si", depending). Lastly, the hot sauce is made in house. Put that sh1t on everything. Ok, it's an unnecessary condiment at Montes, but try it anyways. read more

It is probably good that I don't live close by, because I would be broke and 3 times bigger than I already am... and I am already a big guy. I've heard so many good things about the pastelitos here, I finally decided to check it out on my lunch break. Montes is a small deli with some amazing Puerto Rican food that is quick to grab on the go. The owner and women servicing me were very friendly and kept the fresh food stocked in the hot case. FYI- it is cash only, but they have an atm. I ordered some chicken and cheese pastelitos for lunch and am more than pleased! They were delicious and inexpensive. The menu is small but done well. My only negative here is that there is no explanation of what Frituras are. Since I don't speak Spanish, I skipped over this section. A description and perhaps a picture to show what the items are would be a good upgrade to their menu to help people like me out! I am curious about the other items, so I know I'll be back soon. They have arguably the best pastellitos in town. If you know about, and like, Puerto Rican food, go get some. WOW!!!! I cannot begin to express my delight with this lovely find!!! I have heard about this place. Piqued my interest because my daughter has been in love with pastelillos for years. Tropical Bakery got her hooked, and then they closed and don't get me started on all that nonsense. She and I have been on a quest to find the best pastelillos this area has to offer. We found it! It's here! Going beyond the obvious the menu that this small store offers up is SPECTACULAR!! Rice and beans...even if you are not a fan this is worth trying. Dinners, well, hubby is loving life right now. Let me get started on customer service. I attempted to call ahead to place an order. My daughter feels uncomfortable ordering because she does not speak Spanish. I called and two lovely ladies that told me to just send her in. They would help. I did. They did. Great outcome. Was in the mood for something latino for lunch and hence began my yelp search. I came across Lappa C's comparison of Montes to another business in town which recently opened, and decided to give this quaint little store a chance. I pulled up to the store a bit nervous because the location is really not in a great part of town. Let's just say I tried to make my visit brief. The place is a grocery store which has a hot case on the counter with fried pork, roast chicken, chicken on a stick, and of course delicious-looking fried empanadas. All of the above can be ordered a-la-carte for less than $3 each, though I opted for the pork dinner which comes with meat, dirty rice (rice with beans and peas), and a small salad (shredded lettuce and a slice of tomato on top). The fried chunks of pork were savory and tender with each bite. The rice was perfect and served in a giant sized portion. I ordered chicken on a stick for a friend, which was tender and flavorful (I stole a bite). The meal came out to about $8 - a great price for a delicious home-cooked meal.
