The margaritas were absolutely amazing! The queso and Mexican corn scrumptious! The pork belly, taco salad and the cake kind of fell short. The taco salad had so much going on and while the flavor was good the cold ground beef I just couldn't get past it. Pork belly was on the chewy side. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. The food was average. My quesadilla was extremely sweet. Unfortunately, the server was beyond rude. My 3 friends and I arrived at 7:00PM for our reservation. It was very busy and took quite a while to receive our drinks. We put in food and appetizers at once. The food came out extremely fast.. it was a little overwhelming and I wish we had time to enjoy our appetizers. The server came out with boxes before we had even finished eating. She brought the bills and was clearly in a rush for us to leave. She started having us hand her silverware because she couldn't reach and even took our waters away while we were finishing (it was 8:15PM and I guess they close at 8:00). My friend noted that you could make reservations up until 7:45 online. I asked the server what time they close, trying to hint that we felt very rushed. She flatly said "8:00" and took more items from our table. We felt so uncomfortable trying to finish our drinks that we took them to the bar and left as fast as we could. I mentioned our discomfort to the bartender and he did not care in the slightest. The waitress was rude and distracted the entire time. If I lived in Madison I'd go here quite often. The atmosphere is great and such a vibe for this area. Drinks were really good. The spicey marg was recommended by our waiter and I really liked it. Good choice if you like spice. My wife got their horchata marg which was delicious. If you like sweet it's well balanced. This was a special. The tacos are great. Not all of them were my jam. The kung-pow chicken shouldn't be a taco. The fish taco should be a little smaller and a bit more sauce. Overall though, this place was great. read more

I've been here multiple times and every time is just as good as the last. I always order my go to which is the pork belly quesadilla. There's plenty of leftovers each time for me to enjoy the next day! There's plenty chips and salsa are above average. The service has always been superb. I would also recommend their house margarita. Service here was terrible. They took over an hour to get our order to us, the order was incorrect, and when we mentioned it they replaced it with a plastic bowl of just lettuce. The manager did make it right by comping the order but after not being checked in on, sitting there for over an hour before getting service it felt like we were second tier customers. Horrible place. This was a fun place to eat while visiting Madison not too long ago. We went with a couple of local students and another family for lunch. There is ample parking outside. When you walk in, there are these eye-catching light fixtures hanging from the ceiling. They were so pretty, I took a picture. The restaurant was full and busy, yet we were fortunate to get seated right away, though they were six of us. We were seated right away and our server was great. One person in the group had a nut allergy, and she was conscientious about making sure that was addressed. There were six of us and we each ended up ordering a plate of 3 tacos each, and I think we tried almost every kind of taco. I had the avocado, cauliflower and chicken asada. Others in the group had some combination of these along with the carnitas, shrimp acapulco, barbacoa, steak, and baja fish. We also picked up a couple of orders of tacos to go for a couple of college students who couldn't join us for lunch. Everyone enjoyed their tacos. They were yummy and reasonably priced. The ambiance was a very fun, lively casual atmosphere with an industrial style eatery with a very nice bar with a great selection of some of the best tequilas! Ancho & Agave serves Mexican inspired cuisine such as street tacos, burritos, fajitas, salads including signature salsas but more Americanized with a twist on Mexican flavors. I wouldn't dine here if you are looking for actual authentic Mexican cuisine made with traditional Mexican ingredients. They have a wonderful cocktail menu including delicious fun crafted cocktails, margaritas, and wine! I highly enjoyed my tropical Mai Tai which had a super cute presentation! My husband and I had to start our night ordering the Traditional Queso & chips called Armstrong which was made with seasoned ground beef, guacamole, sour cream and pico de gallo! It was absolutely delicious and satisfying! For our main course my husband ordered a chimichanga while I ordered the chile lime grilled shrimp and steak sizzling fajitas! I also wanted to try out some tacos ordering the grilled Baja fish taco and Nashville hot fried chicken taco! My husband was very happy with his chimichanga! I enjoyed my chile lime shrimp fajitas which were very flavorful but my steak fajita meat was super tough and extremely hard to chew/rubbery but it was very nicely seasoned with a beautiful presentation! I wish they would take the time to tenderize the steak as it was extremely hard to chew or they need to get a better tender cut. I enjoyed my tacos but thought they were bland and nothing special. Overall, the service we received was excellent! We had a really sweet wonderful server who was super prompt, attentive, and friendly. However, the food was okay and more on the bland side. I also believe less is better. Ancho and Agave adds alot of extra ingredients to give more flavors to their food menu items. For example, I was weirded out with all the extra additional ingredients with my Nashville Hot fried chicken taco which comes with pickled carrots, golden raisins, lime aioli, & cilantro. My wife and I have been coming here for years fairly regularly, and we often order the same things, so we have a pretty good idea of what menu items are supposed to look and taste like. Based on our most recent visit, they have made significant changes to the ingredients resulting in overall lower quality food. The guacamole we were served did not taste fresh and house-made like it normally does. It tasted like it had way too much onion and was very tart. I wouldn't be surprised to find out they bought it prepared as it tasted and had a slimy texture like grocery store prepared guacamole. Still $9 though! The avocado serrano salsa on the steak tacos was obviously different. It was watery and also very tart, very fragrant (not in a good way), and tasted like you ate a handful of pepper seeds. The carnitas tacos used to come with crumbled queso fresco. This time, they had some kind of shredded cheese product. This didnt affect the flavor of anything that much, but was the most obvious ingredient substitution. All that to say we were pretty disappointed with our most recent visit and hope this is a short term change. They're obviously trying to cut costs which is a shame because we've generally had a good experience with the food and service in the past. read more

Not great for groups We had a reservation for a birthday that included people coming from out of town. When we made the reservation they did share that the group would be split up into two tables. No problem. We assumed the tables would be side by side. However, when we arrived to the restaurant, the tables were separated by a huge planter, back to back, and we weren't able to interact with the other people in our group. When asked for one table to be reseated closer to the other (there were at least 12-15 empty tables in the restaurant), we were told No. Food is good but quite a disappointment for a birthday celebration. read more

Now, the queso isn't necessarily my type of queso, but it was pretty good. My drink was good and strong. The star of my meal was the pork belly quesadilla. I have been to Ancho and Agave many, many times. My favorite thing is the queso (it's the closest I've found to Texas queso in the Madison area). I've enjoyed the margaritas and Brazilian lemonade. The rest of the food is fine. I do really like the steak enchiladas and the shrimp fajitas. Most of the food is more expensive than I have seen at other Mexican restaurants in the area. The main reason for this review, though, is the service. When I am seated at a table in the bar area, the service is atrocious. I've had to ask another waiter to bring the check because my waiter completely disappeared after bringing my food. I do dine by myself so I'm not sure whether that is a factor. Sometimes the restaurant is quite full when I receive this poor service, but I went today just after they opened and it was still incredibly slow. I have now received this extremely poor service multiple times, so I will not be returning. read more

No explanation, no apology, no attempt to make it right. Instead of honoring our confirmed reservation, they simply offered to add us to the waitlist -- the very same list our table had just been handed over to. Dont trust this place with a reservation. We even called ahead to let them know we were arriving and they still gave our reservation away. Unprofessional & disorganized. This wasn't a mix-up -- it was complete disregard for customers who book ahead. We walked out, and we won't be back. read more

I and my wife had a disturbing experience last week. We walked into the restaurant at around 11:30 am. While most of the tables were vacant, the host assigned us to one of the "unfavorable" tables behind the bar. I asked the gentleman who guided us to move us to another table. While we stayed there, new diners quickly filled up the restaurant. We noticed that not a single group was being assigned to the behind-the-bar area we were initially assigned to. This happened for the entire 40 minutes - group after group, they were guided to tables in better locations (by the front window, booth, or anywhere where it's not as chilly as our table). Even the diners who were serviced by the same server as us (Tiffany - who was wonderful BTW) were never sent off to the unfavorable tables. We can't help but think there was some kind of implicit racism involved. Maybe not by the restaurant - but by the host who assigned us. We were the only Asians at that time and there is nothing else that explains this behavior by the host. We wouldn't have been disturbed if anyone else during our visit was assigned to those tables either before or after us. On my way out, I asked the host the same question. She mentioned that it had to do with the rotating assignment and that it had nothing to do with race. Again, new diners who were served by Tiffany were never taken there as well. So our experience was not based on a rotating seat assignment or a rotating server assignment. read more
