My family and I were passing thru town on our way home from Madison and happen to pass by La Mexicana. We saw the well placed sign on the back of the building and on a whim decided to stop to eat. We are so glad we did. The food and service were amazing!! I had the chicken fajita with the kids and my husband had had the tacos. Literally the best food. The spices on the fajita were so so good. The chips prior to our meal were served with some extra spicy sauce to which my children decided was a challenge for to try. While it was good they wanted some water to wash it down. LOL. A hidden gem of Sauk City! Was out at Sauk Prairie Recreation Area, and stopped here for a quick dinner. I've been told the Mexican food here was the real deal and nom nom nom it is. Complimentary chips and salsa and a bangin playlist greats you as you sit down. I got the enchiladas. My friends got a torta and Chile rellenos. All of them were so good! Meat was juicy, the value was great! They had a spicy spicy red sauce and a less spicy green one. These are definite must add! TLDR: try it all, and stay for that reggaeton! read more

The meat portion of the chimi is nicely prepared and flavorful. Today I ordered the trio fajitas - beef, chicken and shrimp - with sautéed onions and peppers. Beans, rice, salsa, sour cream and small salad rounded out the presentation. I added a roasted jalapeño on the side. Wifey went with the chicken tacos. She's kind of in a rut. Chicken portion was adequate as were toppings: onions, cilantro and salsa. I like the place. It's not fancy, but it is hardy. The food is authentic and it comes hot to the table. Pre-covid I would stop at this restaurant every other week and meet friends, its convenient location right off the main drag/state highway through town was perfect for a quick lunch. It's a small restaurant with cute decor and plenty of sun from the windows. The staff is always very courteous, the food always arrives quickly, and the price is great for the quantity of food you get. Their lunch specials were my usual go-to, especially seafood tacos, and their bottomless chips and salsa basket was stupendous. The atmosphere is kind of "hole in the wall" which is totally fine for a place to grab a quick lunch. The service is always a little slow but very friendly. You get free chips and some yummy salsa right when you arrive. The prices are really cheap and you get a decent amount of food. I usually get the chicken fajitas and while not the greatest fajitas I have ever had they are pretty good for the price you pay for them. I've been going there since they first opened, in 2005 or so. We had a lot of good meals and memories in the past. Through most of those years, except for a period when they changed cooks and they started dumping a lot more salt into everything, the food has been good. Unfortunately it all came to a crashing end recently. A few weeks ago I took my son there after a school event and we each ordered a burrito, nothing else. When the bill came, it was for a LOT more money than I expected, and on inspection I notice they had padded the bill with things we never ordered, extra tacos and things. I told them that we only ordered two burritos, and they gave us a new bill, for the burritos, and with the addition of a hefty "service charge". For what? We didn't order any "service," we didn't receive any "service" other than having the food set on the table, and they still expected us to add on a tip in addition to the "service". Today, April 26, 2022, after looking at their webpage, I read their online menu that stated that tacos on Tuesday were $1.50. I stopped in after work and ordered two tacos, nothing else, expecting to pay $3 plus tax. At the end, they billed me for $6.98, so the $1.50 tacos were actually $3.49, which was no deal for the tiny tacos. When I asked about the overcharge, I was pointed to a small blackboard that said "tacos $2 chicken and beef". The website menu had no restrictions on what kind of taco and it clearly says $1.50 (see screenshot below). I don't know why this once fine establishment started thinking it was okay to cheat customers by adding on things you didn't order onto the bill and not honoring their published menu prices, but I've had enough of being ripped off. I've been going there for about 17 years, and unless they get the greed and dishonesty under control, I'm calling it quits, at least until they change their ways and apologize for this new tactic of padding the receipts and not honoring their published menu prices. If you are afraid of "spicy" then leave the salsas on the side for me. This food is fantastic! We have stopped here twice for lunch. NOTE- some of the early reviews do not reflect the current 2014 offerings. They DO have table service, very friendly and pleasant. they DO have a full bar and I want to try the margaritas, but not at 11:30 am. They have wine and beer too. The chips and fresh homemade pico de gallo were gratis and also yummy; served the minute you sit down. We have had the tacos and sopes, both delicious, with a pretty presentation; not fancy, but served with care. Very authentic, with onions and cilantro. Maybe the best guacamole in the MIdwest. super fresh and for $2 - a bowl that really was bigger than a "side." We ate the whole thing. Bonus- you do walk through a very small and clean grocery to get to the restaurant. the veges looked very fresh and inviting. the meat counter also looked great and cheap. On a recent Sunday, they were also offering take-out carnitas (beautiful cooked pulled pork) in bulk/ by the pound; self-serve into a take-out container, for tacos or whatever you want to make at home. Well, I sure am glad I used Yelp to decide where to eat while in Sauk City recently! Of the three of us, one was a vegetarian, so the plethora of bar/pub/grills and American style diner/restaurants wasn't looking fantastic. Of all the choices, La Mexicana seemed the best bet right off the bat, and we were all pretty excited after I summarized the reviews. The entrance may be tricky the first time around - you walk through the attached grocery to enter the restaurant and choose your own seat. The space isn't large; groups larger than four will have to sit at different tables. It's a really simple setup, which is completely fine by me. I made note of the 'deli' section at the back of the store (meats and tamales, mmm). Service was fast and friendly. We received free homemade chips and salsa as we ordered. One of my friends had the rice water and let me taste it - YUM! I wished I'd gotten it. If it were a different day I might have gone for one of their margaritas, but this time it was just water for me. Our third got a tamarind flavored Mexican soda which was also tasty. They had quite a few Mexican soda flavors available. We ordered one plate of tacos, one meatless burrito, and I got a chicken chimichanga. Yowza! That was the best chimi I've had in ages! It was large enough that I had lunch for the following day. The food was fantastic and oh-so flavorful. Everyone was happy, and the bill was reasonable. Now I wish I wasn't 30 minutes away from Sauk! This place beats any "Mexican" place that I've had in Madison. We saw three separate to-go orders and three other groups in the time we were there, so it appears they've got a good business going between both sides of their venture. We saw a sign advertising their outdoor deck facing the Wisconsin River, so I definitely look forward to checking it out when the weather is nicer. What a great, unexpected surprise while visiting Sauk City on business. I ate lunch here in the fall of 2011 and was very happy with the choices. I love Tex Mex as much as the next gringo but this was more the traditional style of Mexican cuisine. The tacos carnitas I had for lunch were nicely seasoned meat, onions and cilantro. No cheese, no sour cream and they were fabulous. I think with beans and rice the whole plate ran me almost $6.00! What a great deal. The pico de gallo with the chips was yummy and the steak burritos were yummy. My husband ordered the mini and i ordered a regular, they didn't look any different. We ended up taking some home but that was because we ordered a dish of guacamole as well. The guacamole had tomatoes, onions and some good chunks of avocado amongst the mash. Our drink order was sodas and they were in cans. The do have a full bar so if you'd like something else, you can. There were two servers and the place was bustling. We visited La Mexican II for lunch as we were visiting Sauk City. Sitting on the main drag, we were able to park right in front. We sat ourselves at a booth and a waitress came by to drop off menus and take our drink orders. The menu had the usual tacos, enchiladas, burritos, nothing particularly unusual. The prices seemed reasonable. Our waitress brought us chips and salsa. I enjoyed both. The chips were hearty and the salsa bright and fresh. I would actually have loved to have more. In very little time, our entrees were delivered. I had the enchiladas verdes and my partner had the enchiladas mole. The verdes were tasty, the mole was a little too sweet for my taste. The rice and beans were both tasty and the right consistency. Good food, fast service, reasonable prices. This is definitely a good option in the Sauk City area. read more

Service was prompt and pleasant, but no real follow up after food was served, water glasses weren't refilled. Food was disappointing, ordered lunch special of one taco and one tostada with al pastor. The meat was tough and full of fatty pieces, not cooked down the way it should be, also no flavor. Refresh beans had no seasoning. Salsa for chips was very generic, didn't seem freshly prepared. I had a skirt steak platter here last August, but the meat was tough and, to be charitable, otherwise unexciting. But stopped here again today, and was really, really, really delighted. The service is kind, gracious, and spot on. Had a sope with lengua, and two tacos (carne asada and al pastor). It is about the meats. The meats were succulent. The carne asada was smoky delicious. The al pastor was rich and savory. The lengua (lengua is hard to wreck) had all that sweet fatty tonguey goodness. And the salsa with bits of tomato and lots of onion had the most aromatic cilantro. This was simply an epicurean delight. Each element had real quality, each accent was just right. And out there in Sauk City!
