We got out dig Chanel from here, she was a rescued. She came either all her shots as a baby and had her all her life. We trained her for a year, she was amazing. total joke from start to finish. called to find out if dog were available no one answered phone. left message if dogs were available and if not we would turn around being that we were coming from over 1 hour away. never have receive a call yet and that was 24 hours ago. arrived front desk is doing adoptions no help or information on dogs . after 35 min walked up the front desk and asked if we needed a number. asked about 2 dogs we were interested in pointed to back. one of the dogs was on sleepover after asking 3 people and the other did not know. after returning to lobby saw second dog being adopted. when to parking lot to leave and watched the adopter try and load the dog in the car for about15 min. we left saying that will be a good home for the dog. if i was adopting any animal from trails i would find some other place. they are more interested in moving animals out. than fitting animals to the family. bring a drivers licence and get a animal greg m read more

Gotta love TAILS. They have come a long way since having a rented house when they started. The facilities are amazing! There are 2 cat rooms where cats roam free, cat cage sections, dog section, and a section for small animals: bunnies, hamsters, etc Because it is in a college town this is a great place for students to come in and play with the animals on weekends. I tried to look for the Spay/Neuter clinic on here but I couldn't find them. I just want to compliment the staff at the Spay/Neuter clinic. I have had 3 litters of stray cats in my barn this year and have trapped, let the mom's raise their kittens, spayed the mom's and found homes for all the kittens. My last mamma kitty was scheduled to be spayed with tails last Friday. A very nice lady (I wish I recalled her name) called me early Friday morning to let me know that the vet was very sick and she needed to reschedule all the appointments and would call me back to reschedule. I know they typically schedule really far out but she called me back later Fri and said they could squeeze me in on Tuesday. Tuesday morning I brought mamma kitty in. The girl at the front (again I missed her name) was so nice and welcoming and I appreciated that so much. When mamma kitty was picked up she looked great! She was clean, dry and they sent her home with an extra dose of pain meds. I appreciate them treating her so well. I know that there are some other places (I had a terrible experience elsewhere with the first 2 mom's I had spayed) that don't treat "feral" cats as kind. I say "feral" because this kitty was feral but now knows me, talks to me and let's me pet her. So again after such an awful experience elsewhere with the first 2 I really appreciate your kindness and how well this little mamma kitty was taken care of! read more

I love tails the staff is always super friendly and helpful. You can tell they're really excited for the animals to find their new home. We adopted Brittany ears known for her ears sticking up she's now named Brie and she is the BEST dog I've ever had! The only problems we've had was potty training and Kennel training due to her being able to relieve herself in the kennel all the time when she was there but now she has a doggy door and an invisible fence to keep her from jumping our actual fence again. All in all I had a great experience adopting her. I've also had my cat neutered there as well and never felt they treated him with anything less than the best! read more

My bf and I got our youngest kitty here back in June. Bella (previously Judy) is 4yrs old and spent her whole life in shelters. Tails had rescued her and some of her neighbors from another shelter that had been shut down for abuse and neglect. Hearing her story broke my heart. I'd looked on the Tails website at the pictures of all the animals currently up for adoption, and sort of had an idea of which kitties we wanted to see. Bella was not on our initial list. But she chose us! When we arrived, we were told to visit the different rooms. The cats are kept approximately 4-8 kitties in each small room with cat houses and toys. Near the door in each room is a picture of each kitty with their name and description of their personality. (You don't want to adopt an anti-social independent cat if you already have another cat or kids at home, that's when you want a sociable kitty!). A lot of friends think DeKalb was a long way to drive when there's another Humane Society literally blocks from our apt. However, Tails also has the best adoption prices I found. From their website: Adoption fees include: spayed or neutered up-to-date vaccinations heartworm test (dogs 6 months and older) feline FIV/FeLV (cats) dewormed one month free Sheltercare pet health insurance microchip (registration included) free introductory veterinary exam at one of several local vets free bag of Science Diet food I also became a "fan" of Tails on facebook and have seen several events where the adoption fees are lowered or even waived. I had my kitten spayed here with their low-cost spay program. The staff was friendly and very knowledgeable. When my kitten started getting sick the day after her spay, they had me bring her in and examined her and sent medicine home with me. They did all this without an out of pocket expense for me. The cats are kept in a few different rooms with enough space for you to walk around or sit with them. There is also information on the walls/doors about each cat to help you learn about the animals if you are looking to adopt. I found a stray cat and was able to post a found ad on their website. TAILS was unable to accept the cat due to capacity but they did help me with a list of other area shelters. read more

I just adopted my adult cat from TAILS a few weeks ago. They gave me a free 4lb bag of sciencediet food, a free physical exam at a nearby vet, and she came with all vaccinations and was also spayed. They also give out lots of coupons for food, kitty litter, and toys from petco/petsmart. It's a pretty good deal if you ask me. From what I could tell, they seem to be a group of caring and compassionate people who love their animals and get to know each one of them. I don't like that they keep some cats in cages. They have most of their cats in open rooms for them to roam, but some of them are isolated. Same with the dogs. TAILS also has kittens, dogs, puppies, rabbits, ferrets, and sometimes guinea pigs and birds. read more

He was rescued after a tornado in Oklahoma, came up here and we found him after he was in the shelter for 1 year. DO NOT GIVE THESE FOLKS YOUR CREDIT CARD INFORMATION! Today I received a call from their manager telling me they charged my card nearly $200 AGAIN for a service I paid for months ago. They told me not to expect the funds back for 5 days. In two days my car payment will bounce because of this. UPDATE: After stopping by my bank on the way home I learned some additional information. The accurate charge was posted in the first week of November 2018. The second unauthorized double charge was posted November 28 2018, twenty+ days later. Tails only notified me today to start the reimbursement process. They've had my money for over a month and a half and no satisfactory explanation was given for this. If you've used a credit or debit card at this facility I strongly urge you to go to your bank and let them help you investigate to be sure this didn't happen to you too! read more

I'm giving this place 2 stars. I would do 1 but the animals and not all staff members are rude. I came In today July 27th I was looking for a specific kitten. Ewok..the girl working the front desk wearing a tie dyed shirt was extremely rude in her tone and even the way she was moving her head around with attitude as I asked questions. I know I want that kitten so I asked if even though she was having surgery today if I could put a hold on her and come tomorrow to get her. She snapped her head back and fourth gave me a rude tone and said " NO you haven't met with the kitten prior she is not available!" I let her know she was rude and she walked to the back office. Maybe give her a snickers to help with her snickers moment. That shouldn't be the face that represents your shelter when you are trying to get animals adopted. There are plenty of close places to adopt. Friendly staff is important. read more

They adopted out a senior dog without disclosing they hadn't gotten contagious ringworm results back knowing I had another dog at home. It is contagious to humans as well I had to decontaminate my house & car costing quit a bit. I returned the sweet dog immediately after finding out about the positive ringworm test so as to try to prevent further infection. Tails refused to return my adoption fee even though they failed to disclose and I only had her 1 week. I wanted to find her a new home since my dog wouldn't accept her but no one would take her with ringworm. I spoke with John and emailed the Executive Director asking why they would adopt out an unwell contagious dog (no other shelter would do that as far as I know--it goes in foster until well) and the return of my money. i adopted from Tails 4 yrs ago and the experience was good so went back to adopt again and was appalled at how filthy the entire place was and they just opened a half hour earlier. obviously it hadn't been cleaned in a few days and the smell was horrible. I adopted a puppy again this time because their process is not AS intense as other places. Most of the staff is nice, some are obviously overwhelmed and it shows in their attitudes. I kept in touch with the family that adopted my pups sister. both pups had an infection around their incisions from spaying. My 4 yr old contracted kennel cough within 10 days of being at this facility (diagnosed by my vet). we were walked through the facility, through a pass through exam room, through the actual kennel and holding pens and into a large play room in the back to do a meet and greet because the staff member didn't think the interaction she saw outside with both dogs was enough and wanted to see more. my dog doesn't get boarded, has never set foot in a kennel, has not been in contact with any other dogs since before Thanksgiving and has actually never been sick in her 4 years. this was not just a coincidence. both now are on antibiotics. $275 later for exams and meds. could have taken the scripts back to tails to be filled but honestly didn't want anything that was handled in this facility. contacted the executive director of Tails to make her aware of my experience and she would check with staff to find out why the place was not clean THAT DAY. She didn't seem to understand the depth of dirt was not from one day and neither was the horrible stench. Tails needs to step up the cleaning duties. More people need to voice their observations so this is rectified. read more

Last spring a semi feral cat had a litter of 5 kittens in my old dog house. We watched them grow and got pretty attached to them. We found homes for 2 but were unable to find homes for the other 3. Tails took them in and did a great job with them. Thank you Tails. read more

I first went to tails mid 2017 to adopt a kitten, it was fantastic and I wanted to leave an updated review on this amazing shelter. Ive now adopted two dogs and my cat from Tails, thats how much I've loved them. Always great staff, and a fast easy adoption process. The only negative thing I have to say is that the training isn't the best. We took our first puppy Nora there for training and it was a very large busy class and the trainers were stretched pretty thin, so we did not take the training class with our second puppy Ollie. I would always advise people to check tails out. They are so awesome and a really good shelter. read more

Love this place! Tails is a very pet & human friendly place. We just adopted our 2 kittens there yesterday and I felt that everyone there was friendly, well versed in the animals' care, and very helpful going through the adoption process. And although I have been a pet owner (dogs/cats/rodents) for most of my 40+ years, I appreciated the fact that the volunteers went over the "what to expect" when bringing our kittens home. On that note, not quite sure about the negative reviews here as most sound like they don't quite understand that many pets who come into care at shelters do/will have issues due to their prior lives elsewhere unless they happen to be babies. People really can't blame the shelter for not knowing if a dog/cat doesn't like men or other pets...the first 8 weeks of an animals life pretty much ingrains how they will react to different situations. Its unfortunate that most people do not understand that. All in all this shelter is a wonderful shelter and I would definitely tell everyone I know who is thinking about adopting, to go here. read more

Yes, they seem to have their hearts in the right place for the most part. Yes, they do ask for money. But they need it to keep going. On the flip side, we've adopted 2 dogs from TAILS - one came with very expensive health problems (not their fault I'm sure) and one with severe nervous problems - so severe that after having her for 3 years we brought her back as she went after a grandchild for no reason and ripped another dog in the house to shreds (lots of blood but she's okay). I was told that the dog would most likely be euthanized. Strange because I thought this was a no kill shelter and I repeatedly told the lady there that the dog should be paced in a home with no other dogs and no children based on her behaviour. I don't know what happened to her. I just don't want to know It was explained to me that they collect a lot of their dogs from Oklahoma as there is no education re: spay/neuter there and that dogs are allowed to breed and multiply then euthanized as a matter of common practice. They don't often spend any time to screen the dogs before putting them up for adoption. And their wild guesses on what breed or combination of breeds is ridiculous. Bottom line . . . don't go there. read more

I adopted a dog through TAILS at a Petsmart event recently. Evidently, the dog was driven in the night prior from Oklahoma. I paid $200, gladly for the beautiful dog, who is a joy. Unfortunately, he came complete with ticks, fleas, kennel cough, whip worms and hook worms. I'm still waiting for the heart worm test results from my vet, who did NOT honor the "free wellness visit" that TAILS assures. Nor was the dog treated for flea/tick as was stated in the paperwork I received during the adoption. I'm happy to have found this dog to save him, but next time I'm staying local and supporting a local agency that delivers healthy dogs--especially since I have another at home who has now been exposed to all these parasites and ailments. For crying out loud...I had to buy a DYSON! I've been vacuuming and washing everything in hot water daily since I got him. I just don't have this kind of time when I should be helping acclimate the new dog into my household! Also, I'm kind of creeped out by this weird secondary market for "country" dogs in the city. I don't really get it. Where do these dogs come from? Did they belong to someone? Was he really just "cut off a tree" as one volunteer told me? If I didn't fall in love with this little guy, I'd not have taken him on principle. Don't we have enough strays in our area as it is, without them being shipped in from other places? I'm sure TAILS is a fine agency for those in DeKalb, but I HIGHLY recommend that they cease and desist on bringing country dogs up north. If each van holds 20 cages and at $200+ a dog, that's $4000 for dogs that were given ZERO care prior to adoption. Petsmart should think twice about hosting these events as well. read more

I love my Buddy Boy, who's original name was "Tramp" when he came from "Oklahoma's Kill Shelter" because he looked like "Lady" in Lady and the Tramp the Disney Movie but he was male. Anyway, my fiancé and I had been delivering newspapers there for not a year and we'd spend time petting, the dogs, cats, hugging them and giving them some love. We found one I was in love with named Snider. He had the most beautiful eyes, like Cleopatra, he was a lost dog found by the DeKalb Public Library and no one had claimed him for many days. Finally as I was about to adopt him, we had Pebbles my Papillion Poodle girl I've had for 7 years at the time meet him, he wanted to hump her, he barked at her, so my fiancé told me it wouldn't be the right fit as the T.A.I.L.S. associate did too. I thought it was kind of funny. Anyway I didn't care and wanted him anyway but was really, allergic to him. Finally right before we were about to sign papers I asked Verna if there were anymore dogs in the back that was a poodle since they're hypoallergenic, long story short she brought out my Tramp, aka Bam Bam, aka Buddy to this day. I thought he was boring, looked like a scoop of mash potato for his head and brown gravy for his ears. I told my fiancé I didn't want him, he said but feel how soft he is. I said, Okay, we adopted him, and boy was he right, Buddy is more than right. He's like my son! He is my son, he burps, farts, runs like the wind, when I take him to a secluded field with a pond, my country boy gets in drinking water while he's wadding in the water. I love him more than the world, just as much as I love Pebbles and my other cat Aloe. I thank those at T.A.I.L.S. and the volunteers who are there because they want to be and not because they have to be. I also love those who give so much to save animals. I've saved over 30 dogs off of the streets, and one off the highway and there is not a day that goes by that I don't have my eyes out for another animal in need. We need places like this to exist. I am also a photographer in town and I plan to call Peg and volunteer to take photos for dogs that need to get adopted, so they have cute little pictures on the website. Those newly adopt their dogs and would like to take professional photos with their pet for an reasonable rate will then be able to know a percentage of the proceeds will go to DeKalb's T.A.I.L.S.
