This is a gem of a place. The coffee beans are prime. They aren't like the nasty stale Central Market coffee beans that just sit in those bulk dispensers for who knows how long. When you walk into the store, it's like entering what I would imagine would be coffee heaven. The aromas just wafting into your nostrils are so tantalizing. Yes, I'm breaking out the big words for this review. They have all sorts of coffee beans and tea leaves, plus an assortment of candy and chocolate. Personally, I like the caramel sea salt chocolates they sell in small bags at the counter. I usually order a pound of house blend, which you can't go wrong with, plus a pound of their special coffee bean of my choosing. I like to ask the bean aficionados about the different coffee beans just to listen to them talk passionately about their beans and the different notes of flavor they have. It's really impressive to me how much they know their coffees and are quite serious about them. They are always so friendly and helpful, even when they are busy busy on Saturdays. I usually go early Saturdays to miss the crowd and the crazy parking. All in all, I can't say enough good things about this little hole-in-the-wall coffee place. Take your florists, salons, or restaurants... it's even better than tanning skin at Barton Creek... fine olfactory experiences all... take every one of them, and well you'd have a major stink if you put them all together. SINGULARLY, though, Anderson Coffee is The Incredible Austin Smell. Give me a candle, a spray, something. I want to be wrapped in the scent. (And now that the nose part of myself has expressed itself, perhaps inappropriately...) Here goes: - Really top-notch, so-fresh-it-bubbles, roasted coffee. - I am addicted to the Fancy Jasmine green tea they carry. - Their collection of chocolates is hard to beat. - Head on over if you're looking for cool tea pots and coffee accessories. One of the reviewers mentioned they're not the nicest staff. Customer service is a big deal, but I've never had them be rude to me. Are they sunshiney-give-me-a-big-hug? No. But I don't get the "hipper-than-thou" attitude too many of this town's establishments dish out. (That's right, Thundercloud. I'm looking at you.) These people know their stuff. They what they do well. I can't fault them. I've been going to Anderson's for years. They've never let me down. They were doing the roasted beans thing way before the mermaid moved in. Thank you YELP. I would have never darkened the door of this establishment had I not come across the reviews here. I've been by this store 1000's of times, I'm sure...but, there was nothing about the store front that ever made me know I'd love what was going on inside. I LOVE coffee...I just do. Why didn't I know about this place? I rated it a 4, but may come back to give it a 5 one day when I have more time and experience with it. I stopped in quickly this morning just to check it out and get that $1 cup of coffee that everyone here was raving about. Too cool....really good coffee, in decent take away cups (I ABHOR good coffee in white stryofoam) - and how cute was the little dish of sugar cubes with the golden "pick-them-up-thingie"?! I checked out all the cups (LOVE coffee cups...they have to be the right size, weight, shape...yep, I'm anal) and they had quite a selection! So many neat things to see...and fun to browse. It smelled wonderful - and I carefully noted the staff (considering the varying reviews). I'll have to go back and buy some beans. I'll write another review at that time. That smell is coffee. In fact, that smell is some of the greatest coffee in Austin. I'm a fan of the Sumatran, but everything I've had has been delicious. The service is fast, friendly, and attentive. The woman I work with discusses the coffee with me while I stare, dumbfounded, at the chalkboard of options and in the meantime served all the regular customers who run in and out with "a pound of the MokaJava, whole (bean, unground)." Other customers had clearly set aside to come over and get the coffee for special occasions, like dinner parties. There's also a lot of coffee and tea accessories, vanilla beans, cups, grinders, tea cookies and the like. While you're in, try the brewed samples and get a cup to go. She even winked at me as I watched this happen. Really quite sweet. I received some ground coffee as a gift and decided to pay it forward by doing the same. When I lived in Austin, Anderson's was my go-to place for coffee and all manner of tasty tidbits. The changes of the seasons brought out different goodies. The somewhat rustic ambiance and the smell of coffee always delighted me. But the best thing was the delightful freshly roasted coffees. I moved from Austin (we all make mistakes) and coffee just wasn't the same any more. A year ago, I returned for a visit. Walking into Anderson's was a pure delight! I suddenly realized that the reason I hadn't enjoyed coffee in years was because I hadn't had Anderson's coffee in years. Now when I visit Austin, there are two experiences I seek out - dinner at La Fonda San Miguel, and shopping at Anderson's. Together, they let me know that I'm REALLY back in Austin. Since that visit, I've been ordering from them on-line. This week, I ordered on Monday, and my order was delivered to me in Dallas on Tuesday - and that wasn't with overnight delivery! Anderson's is the best coffee I have tried in Austin or anywhere. I started buying coffee from them several years ago and have been impressed by the consistency and quality of their product. It is a place where you want to go when you are buying fresh beans. Do not judge them by the brewed coffee they have in the store. It is often too strong and not well brewed. It doesn't do justice to the quality of their beans. Over the years I have pointed coffee loving friends to this store and everyone who has tried it loves their coffee. Once when we were out of coffee and didn't want to make the drive to Anderson's (about 15-20 minutes from my house) we picked up some of the higher quality coffee from HEB that was about the same price as what we bought at Anderson's. We brought it home and brewed it up. I couldn't believe how bad it was in comparison to what we were used to drinking. We poured it out, threw it in the trash and made a trip. Stop by, support a local Austin business and enjoy some great coffee. Note that they will also ship to customers out of town. Here is a bonus: Try brewing your coffee in an Aeropress. The owner, Jamie Anderson, took time to go over the different coffee makers, how to make a great cup of coffee, listened to my story and recommended a perfect process for my lifestyle. In this ever changing world it's incredibly comforting to have the constancy of Anderson's coffee. They've never bothered to expand - having a shop on every corner has fortunately never been their mantra.. When one enters the store, one if overwhelmed by the wonderful aroma emanating from those roasted beans. My favorite coffee is their Dark Sumatra - it's very bold but never bitter - I start almost every morning of my waking life with at least two cups. On occasion, when they've been out of the Dark Sumatra, the staff has provided me alternatives which have also been quite pleasing. Everyone that works there is very knowledgeable and most accommodating. And when I've been unable to pick up coffee during regular hours, they've arranged for me to pick it up at Russell' s Bakery next store. How many business do you know that will do that? Trendy coffee shops with their overpriced prissy drinks and mediocre beans will come and go, but thankfully Anderson's is here for the long haul. read more

I love this place. I love the people. I love their coffee and delectable treats. It took me a while to find it, but will never leave now that I'm here. Honestly, I bring my own coffee everywhere I go now. Only 2 restaurants in Austin serve coffee good enough for my taste, so I bring my Anderson's roasts with me everywhere. I personally stick to decafs, and have tried 3 different varieties. The French roast is a staple favorite. The Sumoan was really good as well. The House blend I didn't find as dark roasted as I like my coffee. But honestly, other than personal preference, there isn't a single coffee not worth it's weight. The parking lot can get hectic at times, but I can always find a space on the street or in the lot eventually. The people here are fantastic. Very laid back and helpful. Just try one of the two coffees they have brewed on the counter, or ask about one on the board. Specify how much, and what type of filter you use. And if you need it ground or not. Takes no more than 10 min, even when it's busy. Oh and I hate sharing which treats are my favorite, but I promise you can't go wrong for a snack or gift for a chocolate and coffee lover. I've been going to Anderson's since I was a toddler with my mom. It is one of my absolute favorite places in Austin. The rich coffee smell is AWESOME. I don't buy my coffee anywhere else. The Dark Sumatra is the best. I recently discovered you can call in your order and then pick it up - saves me 10 minutes. I've never found a reason to complain about the staff - they've always been incredibly nice people. I really cannot say enough good things about Anderson's Coffee. read more

A sign that their coffee might just be good is when your mother asks you if you've brought any more of 'that coffee from that place' every time you visit. And she's talking about the 60/40 caffeine blend because her doctor told her to cut back, and as a rule, she absolutely hates decaf. But she likes Jamie Anderson's blend. Me? I'm rather partial to the Red Sea Blend and Alfred's Blend. The price is right, too, if you're used to buying bulk beans and not Folger's or Sanka. His coffee runs $9-$11 a pound. That's by and by cheaper than most of Central Market's stuff just down the road. I've never had the customer service problems that have been described by others on this board. I can believe that they occasionally exist as it's a small business and not all small businesses subscribe to a doormat customer service policy. But I usually have Mr. Anderson in his apron and bowtie serving me. Or some cute young guy serving up my beans. It's not unusual, even on a busy Saturday morning, for me to be asked three or four times if I've been helped while I'm in the middle of getting my order filled already. That's good customer service to me. My only complaint is that I wish they'd carry more fair trade beans. read more

This place is so amazing! It's not a coffee house, where you can lounge around for endless hours on your laptop sipping a frappuccino. It's a place where you go to buy coffee by the pound or the half pound. They sell coffee by the cup, for a quite reasonable price of a dollar a cup! Score! I got the Guatemalan roast, which is earthy and crisp. The store has all kinds of accessories for your coffee and tea drinking needs- things like wild French presses, tea pots, chocolates to serve with your tea, finger foods, you name it. The coffee selection is out of this world! They must have had 20 different blends of coffees from lands that I've only heard of. They break down their menu by geographic region, which is pretty cool! The prices are quite reasonable, considering the quality of the beans and the roast. The store is clean, and the staff is quite friendly and helpful! Parking was a breeze, as they have their own private lot, and there's a restaurant next door where they proudly serve Anderson's coffee, so if you wanna lounge around and sip your joe, you can do it next door. Some of the best coffee you can buy locally IMO. It's locally owned and they have a great tea selection also. You can pick up a wide array of coffee makers, from chemex to french press to drip coffee makers. It's a very charming shop, with wafts of coffee aromas drifting out of the front doors. The interior is all wooden, and feels timeless and nostalgic, the kind of place that wouldn't be surprising to see in another 30 years, completely unchanged. You won't be disappointed. read more

Can't beat a 16oz cup of freshly brewed coffee for $1. This place, this place is fabulous. I came here to get some coffee by the lb and absolutely fell in love. This is the cutest little coffee place. First, when you walk in you are greeted by the delicious smell of fresh coffee and the smiling faces of the employees. The employees were very helpful and knowledgable about the different coffees offered. They have lots of chocolate available, the cutest mugs and espresso cups, and lots of other things to look at/buy on your stop in. Not to mention they are born and raised in Austin!:)via love buying local. If I could change one thing-the only thing, it would be that they had a cute little area to sit outside and enjoy the a cup of coffee. Still gets 5 stars though! i have to admit I was a little worried after reading some of the other reviews about the service. I found the staff to be very helpful and friendly. He helped me pick a few coffees based upon what I had liked before. I even had my three year old son with me and if you have never been here before this place is a regular china shop filled with hundreds of tea and coffee mugs and sets. Even though I brought the equivalent of a bull into their china shop, they were very friendly. I will definitely be back again! They have a great little store with all of the coffee accessories you can imagine and some very nice chocolates and sweets. read more

This place has a strange smell when you walk in. It's 3 parts fresh-roasted coffee, 1 part lichen, and 1 part poop. Your guess is as good as mine. I really don't care, though, since this place has the best value in to-go coffee that I've seen in the city. A 12 oz cup of Starbucks costs $1.50, I believe; Whole Foods and Central Market costs closer to $2. At Anderson's, a to-go cup of coffee costs $1 even, and it's better than most of the coffee at the above-mentioned places. Supposedly, their in-house roasted coffee is an even better value, but I have yet to buy it because my piece-of-crap coffeemaker couldn't really do it justice. Someday... The quaint but attractive shop is located near the original Kerbey Lane, which sometimes makes it challenging to find parking. But I promise the effort is worth it. I love the coffee here and I love the staff. I never drank coffee until about six years ago, and I got started or "hooked" on it by Starbucks caramel frappucino. Well, I've moved on since then and now that I work right by this place, this is where I go to get my caffeine. It's $1 for a cup of good tasting coffee. The first time that I went in there, it was explained to me that the drinks that they sell there are coffee and decaf. That's it. There's one size. If you want a creamer, they have half and half. Do you prefer soy milk in your coffee? Bring your own or go somewhere else. I've come a long way since Starbucks. I can't believe that I really drank that stuff. Thank you Anderson's. It is a cute and homey little shop and it smells really great the moment you walk in. But really the people are the best part. There coffee is soo smooth. I prefer their French Roast. Occaisionally I try the Costa Rican beans if I want black coffee. Their coffee is better than most, and it costs less than most?! We include a bag of beans in all our Christmas gifts. read more

The roasted coffee here is great but there isn't a ton of variety. So if you like beans roasted more towards the medium/dark spectrum this is your place. If you like coffee that has fruity notes which are mostly lightly roasted you won't find that here and may need to look elsewhere. Second point is not enough is done for coffee education. A lot of the beans are $12-13 a pound and many of the workers cannot articulate cupping notes. Would love to see them feature 3 of their higher end beans for sampling because simply writing the name and bean origin on a chalkboard can be confusing, especially for someone new to coffee. They do offer sampling of one coffee in their thermos. Also for sale for $1. Third point is the coffee packaging is nice but the bags don't have one way vacuum valves. The valve ensures the coffee can breathe and stays fresh for as long as possible. Having said all that the coffee is good and you should definitely try it. Sumatra, Red Sea Blend, Kenya Fancy and Holiday Blend were all enjoyed here. Another benefit is you can buy a cup of their daily sample for $1. So definitely check them out. read more

I am a native Austinite, and my mother and I have been devotees of Anderson's Coffee for more than two decades. We both love the Sulawesi and Sumatra coffees, but every holiday season we buy the Holiday Blend because it is just that good. This is not a "cafe"--it's just a simple store to buy coffee and tea and accessories. Where has this place been my whole ATX life?! Oh, wait...it's been right here, where it's been since 1972 (I believe that's what they told me.) Yet another gem of central Austin tucked away in a corner just waiting to be discovered and henceforth treasured as one of the best parts of this city. I'm currently a little hopped up on their Flores roast - which is delicious - so I'm going to try not to ramble. Let me just bullet point this bad boy... - Great location! A little out of the way so you're not on a busy street, but in a really cute little shopping center with its own parking lot so it's easy to park & walk around the other stores. - The store itself is adorable. So many coffee cups, y'all. French presses, fancy coffee goodies, biscotti, you get the idea. They also have tea & accoutrements like tea pots, but I'm a coffee girl and I don't know much about all that. - $1 cup of coffee. Let that sink in a second. They brew one regular and one decaf roast each day and sell it for a buck a cup. This alone makes it worth stopping by. - Excellent selection of fresh roasted coffee. I'm told they roast on Mondays and Thursdays so no matter when you go in you're getting the freshy-fresh. So. Many. Choices. Their menu board is well-organized & labeled. If you know what you like you can easily find it including fair trade & organic. Also... - Awesome staff! Everyone was so nice & very helpful as well as extremely knowledgable. They can help you choose the best coffee for a given application (like, "I want to be kickstarted in the morning and I use a French press.") They can also grind your coffee the ideal way for your brewing method of choice. I kind of already can't wait to go back! I was on a mission today & needed to get my loot and get back to work, but I will be back because this is now my coffee purveyor of choice! read more

Ok--there are a lot of choices for coffee. Starbucks was my favorite when I lived in NYC. When I moved to Austin, a wonderful friend suggested Anderson's. It is privately owned. They roast their beans on premise. The House Blend is always a grand choice--but my new favorite is Organic Flores. Truly an excellent cup of coffee. BTW, if you want to pop in for a cup of coffee, you serve yourself--and it is $1.00. Yes one dollar! They are also are wonderful in recommending different appliances for coffee brewing at home & are able to give you all the pros and cons.
