After more than 25 years I have completely given up Anderson's Coffee because of the service issues. The best coffee in Austin, the worst accommodation of customers. During the pandemic they refused to conduct curbside pick-up like every other store in town. How hard would it have been to place the person's bag outside the door when they arrived at the store? Instead, they charged 12.95 for shipping, which essentially doubled the cost of the coffee. Not feasible or ethical. When they finally opened the store again, they now refuse to take phone orders and insist that you come in and wait your turn. Mind you they're still requiring masks, so they have a concern about Covid, but their new policy requires that everyone wait together in that small space! Moreover, because of traffic growth in Austin there is absolutely no parking. I drove from really far away on a Saturday, orbited the area 3 times looking for a space, then gave up and went home. I was in a warm and fuzzy meeting recently and the facilitator was going around the room prompting us for concerns. After several despondent financial and relationship stories it came to me, and my only issue and truthful response was I needed to get to Anderson's because I was low on coffee. Since I don't spend more than I make and actively work on my relationships, I just don't have a lot of angst to share. Anderson's is one of those places that make Austin Austin. Staff seem to come and go, but their quality of beans, blends, and roasts have been consistent for me and their prices are remarkably modest. I'm not a connoisseur, I can't discourse on the legacy of Peet, but I can brew some freshly ground Alfred's Blend that's just superb. I always keep their premium low-caffeine blend on hand. Incidentally, I have nothing against caps and latts at Starbucks, I just get my personal unfettered coffee at Anderson's. In my office building's community kitchen, where there are always pots of normal coffee, I'll brew some Anderson blends occasionally just to see the quizzical RCA dog-like expressions from the unsuspecting Folgerites. The Anderson coffees go quickly, btw. I confess I amuse easily. read more

Upscale coffee roaster in an upscale neighborhood. The shop is small, but packed everything needed to enjoy a fragrant cup of coffee or tea. The employees are friendly and will take the time to answer your coffee questions. They usually have one drip coffee of the day for purchase and about 8-10 variety of beans to choose from. You can purchase the beans in 1/2lb. increments. They also have a variety of teas, biscuits and chocolates to choose from. I'm totally addicted to the salty caramel chocolate balls. Anderson's also has the best selection of manual and automatic coffee makers in the area, including French presses, drip funnels, and everything in between. My current coffee obsession is a light roast washed Ethiopian brewed using a Chemex and Anderson's has these filters! Anderson's is a good roaster for you if you prefer darker roasts. Updating for covid! Anderson's Coffee is a wonderful coffee shop and they ship. If you don't see what you need or want on their website, then just call them on the phone, describe it, and they will mail it to you. One of my teens has a favorite coffee cup, and I texted a photo to a man who worked there (I'm blanking on his name, but he was great). The man found the cups and let me order them over the phone, along with some coffee. I miss going there in person but we're doing super-duper shelter in place. read more

I went to Anderson Coffee to buy an overpriced ($162.32) burr grinder because they are a local company. The Baratza grinder is simple enough to operate with only two pieces to install, a collar and gasket. The grinder didn't work out-of-the-box, so I took it back with the receipt the day after I bought it to exchange it for one that worked, but they wanted to "take a look at it". I got a call a day later and so I trucked back up there to discuss options. I was told that I broke the machine and I could order and pay for the replacement part. I know I didn't break the machine because the broken part (plastic wheel tabs which move the coffee) are located under a housing secured by a wingnut, deep within the grinder and i didn't touch it. Furthermore I couldn't even grind the first bin of coffee. Regardless, their policy should cover day-old equipment accompanied with a receipt. Fortunately it won't be hard to find good coffee and good service at a more affordable price elsewhere. I will not recommend this busness to anyone as they don't stand behind their products. read more

We found Anderson's not long after moving to Austin from Oregon (where we became coffee snobs) in 1983. We've been customers ever since. Wonderful coffee at reasonable prices. After we moved to Maine in 2009, we've continued to have it shipped to us here. Friends who visited us have had it shipped to them in CT for over a decade. I lived in Austin for 10 years and one of the best legacies of my time there is Anderson's Coffee. I am so happy I found this place to supply my serious coffee snob fix! I just placed my last order as I'm moving to a place where amazing coffee will be growing & available in my backyard but will miss the next best place on earth - Anderson's! Many years ago I was at my favorite Austin bakery, Sweetish Hill, and I had a cup of exceptionally good coffee. I asked about their source of coffee and you guessed it! Anderson's. In the ensuing thirty or more years, I have tried Peet's, Illy, and a couple of other brands I can't recall, plus Starbucks--always buying beans. I no longer need to try anybody else's coffee, because Anderson's has passed every test I have thrown at it. Starbucks often has broken pieces of beans, but Anderson's never does. I buy a pound of French Roast, a pound of French Roast Decaf, and a pound of Kenya Fancy and create various blends of the three--I am totally satisfied. I weigh the beans and grind in a burr grinder. I use 23 grams of water for every gram of coffee. Many of my friends have said it is the best coffee they have ever had. read more

Anderson's is like a big, warm, nostalgic hug. Weathered wood floors. Shelves upon shelves of mugs, imported biscuits and sweets, and teas aplenty. Friendly, knowledgeable salespeople who walk you through their various beans and blends. A cup of coffee for a $1. Small town shopping at its very best. read more

I was expecting a coffee shop (a menu full of lattes, pastries and seating), but literally saw a coffee shop, with rows of coffee cups, trinkets, and all things dedicated to coffee. The gentleman took loads amount of time with me, going through all of their coffees and telling me the differences in flavor, best sellers, etc. I made the mistake in coming in with a to go cup of coffee from Kerbey Lane, but he offered to let us fill our cup with their coffee for free if we dumped what was in our cup LOL. I purchased ground coffee House Blend and wow it is just smooth and down right delicious. I also purchased whole bean coffee (started with an X but can't remember the exact name) and sent it to my mom, and she thought the coffee was amazing! I can't wait to go back to get some more coffee, it's so good. read more

We are coffee DRINKERS and have ordered from Anderson's since we left Austin (1986). Needless to say, we have not found a better roaster. We have a one or two day turnaround and the order is alway correct. We now live in Santa Monica and have lots of choices. Anderson's is still the best. read more

Anderson's is one of my favorite businesses in Austin, full stop. In a city where most things are so new and businesses are trying to outdo each other in the trendy department, Anderson's has an old fashioned, no frills atmosphere where it's all about high-quality coffee and tea. Simply walk in and buy excellent coffee beans from around the world, by the pound, for reasonable prices. The store is charming, the employees are helpful, and getting to try a new variety of coffee for $1 a cup each time I come in is always a nice bonus. I came for the fresh roasted coffee beans ( they roast them every Monday and Thursday). The person who attended me ( I believe name was Clare) was very helpful in explaining my options. They also sell tea which was an added bonus and have a large array of mugs and gift giving items. This place was awesome! I happily purchased several gift items for friends here and look forward to trying out the coffee. The place was packed but I didn't wait long, folks were buying the Sumatra blend in droves, will have to try that next. Reasonably priced and they have several organic coffee bean options. read more

Jamie Anderson learned his coffee selection and roasting skills from Alfred Peet before coffee was on anyone's radar. The tradition continues with quality above all. Many great restaurants in town get their coffee here. I could wish that the rest of them did as well. The also have an extensive selection of teas, sweets, and coffee accessories. Be sure to get a fresh cup for a buck while you are there. Especially if you've never had a real good cup of strong coffee. Brewed constantly through the day and piping hot. It is with great reluctance that I review Andersons. It has been my secret coffee jewel for 23 years. I go every week and get a lb or organic dark Sumatra. When I am away from town I take it with me. When I have had to live in other locations for several months, I have had it shipped, all over the world. This is the best coffee there is. As a total coffee snob I can say it is truly the best there is. There are no specialty drinks it is a coffee roaster. It is all about the bean and the roast it is not hidden with sugar and cream. I got half a pound of the Honduras beans. They make the smoothest cup of coffee, and I am going to cry when they run out (ok, maybe a slight exaggeration). I'll just have to order online. read more

I think I'm breaking up with Starbucks. Years ago, I remember getting a cup of coffee at Anderson's but it did not impress me for some odd reason. I guess that was before I had grown up taste buds. Today, I stopped in to find Hubby a "unique" coffee scoop for his stocking since he is the brew master at our house. After a thorough search for weeks, I found it here. On my way to pay for the only unique coffee scoop in the city of Austin, I sampled their coffee of the day. It was a rich and mellow Mocha Java. Wow. Where is the bitterness? Like I taste at Starbucks, God love 'em. (And apparently She does since billions of people buy their coffee and goodies every day.) Anderson's is a fantasyland for the coffee and tea lover. My head spun around the neat and colorful shop taking in the mugs, cups, boxes of wonderful teas, fresh roasted coffees, packages and tins of cookies and candy, t-shirts, and coffee and tea accessories. As part of my rehab, I have to admit "I am an addict!" To coffee that is... As someone always in search of my next fix, how have I only just discovered this awesome place!?! After getting brunch with a friend nearby the strong aroma of my addiction wafted by me kicking my physical dependence into high gear. The source came from a seemingly small house up the street with its doors open...ah you sneaky SOBs letting your coffee smells unto the street, drawing in the masses like moths to flames, zombies to brains, or emo teens to vampires... The staff is really friendly and super knowledgable, they were able to take my obscure tastes and random descriptors into a blend I love! And they grind your beans for you right there just the way you want them. The small entrance suddenly opens up into a large two room store with beans, sweets, and goodies everywhere. This local store has high quality beans from around the globe and several organic options. Like a head shop for potheads, this place is lined wall to wall with coffee paraphernalia, french press, espresso, and an array of gadgets I didn't even recognize. Let me be upfront about something: I don't drink coffee. But I have a very close relationship with two of the world's biggest coffee snobs. These normally laid back, down-to-earth folks noses go straight into the air in regards to coffee. They have been known to shriek things such as, "No, no you can't do that!!!! You will bruise the beans!!!" Or "Ooooh noooo, we don't DO flavored coffee," with a look of disdain. They cringe at the thought of buying pre-ground beans and they lament the fact that their car's cup holders don't accommodate the carafe (yes carafe) of freshly brewed coffee that travels with them everywhere they go. Pretentious much? I'd say so. Something else they are adamant about is buying their coffee from Anderson's. As a kid, weekend activities such as softball games, birthday parties, and Girl Scout campouts were scheduled around trips to Anderson's (they are closed on Sundays so we had to make it on a Saturday, even if it was a very busy Saturday). You would think growing up in this environment, some coffee knowledge would have seeped through to me, but nope, I don't even know how to brew a cup. In fact, I'm quite intimidated by coffee and shy away from coffee shops. I get nervous trying to order, afraid that I'll make some mistake. One day I realized I needed to buy some coffee because I had house guests coming. I went straight to Anderson's, and though I had some anxiety about ordering the wrong thing, the staff was friendly and knowledgeable and best of all, not the least bit pretentious (ahem, mom & dad!). Walking in the door, it smells absolutely divine and there are all sorts of little knick-knacks. Quite simply, the best coffee in Austin. I just hope I don't come across as high falutin now when I say, "Oh, I only get my coffee from Anderson's." read more

I just recently started brewing my own coffee during the last few months. I never really made my own coffee in the past but making coffee has become a part of my morning ritual. After reading the positive yelp reviews, I decided to try the coffee from here. My first visit here was very pleasant and I was pleased to see that they had so many different types of coffee to choose from. I got the mocha java blend and it was divine-very smooth and tasty. My second visit to this place was about a month ago and it was a completely different experience. The woman who 'helped' me was so rude and completely disengaged. She didn't seem like she wanted to bother with helping me or answer any questions. I wanted to get some recommendations and asked her about how a couple of the different coffees tasted. She wasn't forthcoming and just didn't really care to share her thoughts or provide any useful input on the 2 or 3 coffees I was asking about. She also didn't seem to appreciate my patronage either. Just that experience alone makes me not want to go back here, even though there were a few other coffees I wanted to try. read more

My very first coffee came from Anderson's in 1978 and I've never looked back! They were "doing" coffee before coffee was cool...or, should it be, before coffee was hot? Jamie Anderson learned his roasting skills from the paterfamilias of the American coffee movement, that is, Alfred Peet, way back in the early '70s. For those who don't know, Mr. Peet taught lots of people the roasting art, and a few of his disciples migrated to Seattle after some time in Berkeley, to sell Peet's coffee in that town under the name Starbucks. Anderson's doesn't dive too deeply into the wacky world of single origin/estate beans, sticking to a proven variety of classic classics, and they just do those better than just about anyone...with 40 years experience in this deep, rich cup, they were doing it before most of today's coffee hot rods were even born. The best part is, well, the second best part after the quality, is the price...shop around. I live in Portland where the ultra hip Stumptown runs 12-20 per pound...and up. And it's never, ever as good as Anderson's where the top coffees go for maybe 8.95 or 9.95 max. I think you can still get some varieties for 7.95! Stumptown, y'all need to go back to school, take a big slice of humble pie, and start over! Austin, if you like great coffee, get to Anderson's. It's just that simple. Regardless of what you hear or read, NO ONE in town does this better. read more

Wow, what a find! For a person who goes all over town to coffee shops and has been living in Hyde Park and Cherrywood for the past 3 years, finding this EXCELLENT coffee roaster in my backyard is like a dream. No, not literally in my backyard. Anderson's Coffee Company has apparently been around for quite awhile. We found it right on Kerbey Lane off of old 38th street in a fancy strip mall. The place smelled great upon walking in. You walk straight to the back of the store where a huge chalkboard details the many varieties of coffee available for purchase. Being relatively clueless when it comes to coffee types, I tried to describe what I was looking for to the red-aproned attendant. He suggested their Sulowesi Kolossi, which sounded interesting and ended up being wonderful. Considering that their prices are ~$10 a pound, there is no excuse for buying your coffee from the grocery store any longer. Anderson's makes some of the best coffee I've ever had and is easy to get in and out of quickly. Give it a shot! read more

I really love Anderson's! Their coffee is fantastic & I love shopping there. The past 2 years i was out of Austin and tried out a wide range of good coffees-Portland's Stumptown, Chicago's Intelligentsia, and NC's Counterculture. All are good well-regarded brews. In fact, i truly wondered, after some time without it, how Anderson's would measure up. Fortunately, the answer is that Anderson's continues to meet and exceed my expectations, with great taste and quality. yum! Anderson's coffee has several roasts rated highly as a "cup of excellence". Moreover, compared to the other coffees out there, Anderson's is far more economical. Counterculture, Stumptown and Intelligentsia all sell 12oz bags of beans for over $12 whereas at Anderson's, a full 16oz is still less than $10. For a couple who goes through a large amount of coffee each month, this is important, and appreciated. Anderson's sells many Fair Trade and Organic coffees. A few years ago, Anderson's started offering coffee by the cup. When i was there today, i was happy to see they still offer it. A real treat, the coffee costs just $1 and is delicious, putting Pike's place to shame! My favorite is the Red Sea Blend, but i really love trying all the different types. Recently, i've been enjoying the Nicaraguan. The staff at Anderson's is friendly, the store is inviting and intriguing. You can buy coffee filters, cool mugs, tshirts, grinders, specialty candies, and all types of coffee makers and paraphernalia. oh yeah, Anderson's stocks a nice variety of teas and tea paraphernalia mmm, coffee! ps: the Holiday Blend is da bomb! pps: i've now tried the decaf, and the 40/60 blend. Great place that has been an Austin tradition for years. The place that taught me that all coffee was not Folgers. Yes, one or two of the staff have been crabby a time or two, but they have been generally knowledgeable and friendly over the 20-odd years I've been going there. Actually, sorry, I must comment further on this issue. Folks, this is what you get sometimes when you deal with small businesses staffed by real people who are not trained into absolute subservience. If you don't like the way you are treated and it bothers you sooooo much, then tell the management. Mr. Anderson has been there almost every time I've been, he's your guy. Or, just ignore it. The Kenya AA is my favorite, Arabian Mocha is also darn tasty. I've mucked around with a few of their loose leaf teas, no complaints. This is a great local business that hasn't degraded over time like so many others, give it a try. read more

I can't speak about their coffee, because quite frankly, it didn't go very far. I won't bore you with over the top exaggeratedly pretentious opinions about the "wafting smells" that permeate this store. I entered with a smile on my face and a courteous hello, only to be ignored by the worker. Okay, I let it go and browsed the store looking for mugs/creamers and eyeballed their selection of teas. Nothing stood out to me as exclusive, just the typical brands you'd find at any local grocery store. The difference is, Anderson's coffee charges double for it to cover the cost of their rent. Their tiny ceramic creamers were $5....uhhh...really? On top of being disappointed in their selection, their disgruntled workers were an obvious sign of epic failure. There were a total of three workers, NONE of them greeted us or acknowledged our presence. Last time I checked I didn't own a cloak of invisible shield. A simple smile and hello would have sufficed, but apparently that required effort. Yeah....yeah.....I get it, you're the victim of low wages, exploitation and you have to put up with entitled snooty hags that frequent the store. I'll never know how good your coffee is because now, I simply don't care to. I'll drink my "stale" Central Market coffee any day than come to this place. read more

Anderson's Coffee is one of those little places, growing steadily more rare, that represents not only someone's livelihood but his passion as well. Step into this place, with its soft and creaky wood-plank floor, and be welcomed into Mr. Anderson's heart and spiritual home. Anything you bring home from Anderson's will be permeated with the aroma of the fine coffee they've been roasting there for the last 20 years at least. Besides coffee and loose-leaf tea by the pound, Anderson's carries temptations in many other guises as well. So what if you've never used or needed a teapot in your life. How can you pass up the one shaped like a hunting octopus? Or the bars of best Belgian chocolate, the twelve flavors of marmalade, the cookies from another land, the fire-engine red French press? I hit Anderson's right after payday and stock up on coffee for the month. The trip takes up more than my lunch hour, and many other more convenient places now have similarly excellent fresh-roasted coffee for a little cheaper. But none of those places is Anderson's. Always for me the trip is worth the time. read more

Not a place to stay and drink coffee; that wasn't clear to me from the pictures & reviews. They do have brewed coffee to-go, though, for $1/refill, and it's decent coffee. The place has a weird, noxious smell, as some of the other reviewers have noted, so you'd probably not want to stick around anyway. P.S. 3 stars is "A-OK"? Weird scale, Yelp. My 3 stars mean something more like "well, what did you expect." read more
