Went to Houndstooth Coffee around 7 am and it was a really nice way to start the day. Super peaceful and quiet, which is exactly what you want that early in the morning. I got a latte and a chai latte and both were pretty solid, definitely above average. Nothing crazy or experimental, just well made drinks that hit the spot. Seating is a bit limited, so I could see it getting tight later in the day, but going early makes it way better. The calm atmosphere in the morning is honestly one of the best parts. I enjoy visiting local coffee shops. I was in search of an afternoon coffee and came across Houndstooth on the Yelp app. Parking can be tricky. A lot of spots are reserved for valet parking for Uchiko. I was able to find a spot up front, however I did not realize it was short term parking (10 minutes). Luckily, I was planning to get my coffee to go. There were a couple of 30 minute parking spots too. The coffee shop isn't huge, but they have some small tables as well as a couch. Many of the patrons were working/studying. They also have a nice covered patio out front. I was hoping they would have some "signature" drinks, but they mostly had standard coffee drinks. The barista was very nice and made suggestions based on my taste preferences. My default beverage is a white mocha, however I didn't see it on the menu so she suggested ordering an Iced Mocha with vanilla syrup. I opted for oat milk. It didn't take long for my drink to be prepared. My drink was very good and the sweetness level was perfect. read more

Coffee at Houndstooth Coffee was strong and robust. I ordered the Americano and was pleased with my coffee. The coffee design was added bonus. The servers were pleasant but appeared a bit overwhelmed by the non-ending amount of customers. Coffee prices were comfortable to coffee houses. If was definitely a working coffee shop. Alright this is not my favorite coffee spot in Austin, but the espresso does the job. I would say for location this is a great study spot (or work spot in general). But if you're prioritizing coffee taste I wouldn't say this is the best coffee out there. It tastes more on the watery side, but service was pleasant. All in all it was okay not the worst, but not the best. I would come back to study, and that's the only reason I would willingly buy a coffee here. read more

Stopped by this morning after a med appt. Quaint little place with outdoor seating. The weather was fantastic so all this seats were taken. Ordered a regular latte and a blueberry muffin. The barista was very nice and even though she over poured my drink, she had to pour it into a second cup which erased the lovely coffee art. But that didn't matter the second I took a drink.. what a fantastic latte, in my top five for sure. It was like drinking coffee flavored liquid silk... Houndstooth is in a pretty central part of Austin and a decent spot to grab coffee. I came by much too late in the day to have caffeine so I got a herbal berry tea. The tea was pretty tasty and it reminded me of the Honest Tea's black forest berry herbal tea, even the same color. The lady at the front was friendly and greeted me pretty quickly when I walked in. There's a decent amount of space in the cafe. Parking is slightly tight because there's a Taco Deli nearby. read more

Even though there was a Starbucks adjacent to my hotel, I ventured farther downtown to try Houndsooth Coffee as it was highly recommended by a friend! The ambiance was warm and the staff was very welcoming. They also offered recommendations which is always appreciated! I went with a simple iced vanilla latte with oat milk and I could definitely taste the high quality of the coffee beans. I wish my husband was able to try this since he's a frequent coffee drinker and I know that he would just rave about this place! There's different types of seating both indoors and outdoors. This place was a first for me. Never have I been to a restaurant or bar or cafe or coffeeshop that does not post PRICES for anything they are selling on their menu. So how am I supposed to know what I wanna buy if I dont know what it is going to cost? Aha! You are supposed to ask. But when I asked, the barista looked as me as if I was the only person she had ever waited on that asked about pricing. She says " Well the cheapest thing is regular black coffee." She was correct, I did want the cheapest thing in this pretentious place but her attitude was as if I was in Tiffany's asking how much every diamond ring was that I could clearly never afford. This place was full so they clearly don't have any issues attracting customers. The coffee is great. The service is a mixed bag. Today it was very bad. There was a very rude counter woman that takes orders and helps with orders. First, as we walked up to the counter to order, she just turned around and left, no "I'll be right back" or "just a moment" she didn't acknowledge us and just walked away. Then, I ordered two identical basic drinks, when they arrived one was normal, the other one had some type of sweet syrup or different kind of milk in it. It was quite obviously wrong to me and my partner especially as we had two identical drinks to compare. I brought this to their attention and they basically tried to gaslight me into thinking I was wrong, they refused to admit they made a mistake and the counter woman had a very rude smirk and just shook her head. The primary barista agreed to make a new drink, so giving two stars considering that, but I was treated very rudely and it wasn't my mistake. read more

This place was walking distance from the Airbnb I was staying at while visiting atx. Loved this spot. I came a few times. Once I got a cafe au lait but less half and half and they accommodated. The next time I tried a triple vanilla latte - delicious! Bakery wise - everything looked great but I was in a savory mood and tried the mushroom danish which I loved. We came here because we were heading this way for breakfast. Our first impressions of the store was the decor was very nice and it had a welcoming vibe. Single origin espresso : The espresso was a Guatemala single origin and we tried it on the barista's recommendation. I can confirm that it was incredibly juicy and fruity. The espresso quality runs with the best in Austin. Iced vanilla latte : This tasted like ice cream after drinking the espresso lol. It was a little sweet but not overly sweet! I would recommend this latte. Not sure how much each drink was but it was about $10.50 after tax. Parking here is plentiful and the service was fast. Tried houndstooth today, place looked cozy and happening, my husband got the house coffee and me cortado, cortado was decent, coffee was ok. Service is ok. Fyi, there were only sugar packs on counter but I prefer stevia so asked them and they keep it with them and they gave one, I told I m not sure if I want 1 or 2, then he gave one more, I felt it bit odd, they could keep some with sugar, one was enough for me, so made sure I kept the other one on counter. Wifi is terrible here. I asked the barista about this and all he said was "yeah this happens everyday multiple times per day." Not really an apology? Although, I don't expect a barista to be the IT tech so I understand he cannot repair this himself unless he's good at that stuff. If it is known that ALL THREE of the wifi networks SUCK, fix them. Whoever is responsible for being in charge of the network - please, get this going. I wanted to skip Starbucks to support a local shop and am now sitting at a Starbucks (where a crackhead is passed out outside at the only table available and the inside feels like a meat locker) because the wifi connection is stable and strong. I stopped in here to get some work done on a Friday morning while my sister was getting her hair done down the street. I walked but there is plenty of parking in the lot of you drive. The shop is next to a juice place and a taco shop in a nice little strip of stores. The shop itself is bright, airy and hipster. Think metal tables, wood coffee bar, big windows and a lot of people on laptops--mostly students and freelancers based on the conversations I heard. The baristas were super nice and I ordered a large chocolate latte (basically a mocha). At $6.30, it's pricey but really not much different than what I'd pay for my drink at Starbucks. It's a little out of the way from downtown, but a great find in this area if you're out and about and in need of a caffeine boost. read more

This was one of those places I would file under "Trying to be Too Trendy or Hipster" category. I am a big fan of coffee shops, both local and franchise, both lowkey and trendy. With that said, with coffee shops that offer artisanal-ish coffee, there's a balance between being unique with high quality items, and being overrated. Coffee: quality is good, and that's the only reason I give this place stars at all. Where it goes downhill for me is how overpriced this is with the amount of coffee you get. I am more than happy to pay a high price for good-quality coffee, but there's a balance. The coffee here did not warrant the price it sold for. Space: The menu is this itty bitty card by the cashier. No easily-visible menus to peruse before ordering. Where you line up to order probably creates a fire hazard sometimes, as it's not really that easy to go from ordering to where you can wait for your order. And is it just me or do they not have trash cans inside??? Service: not warm or inviting at all, and the workers here (at least when I visited) all seemed too cool to connect with their customers, or even be personable at all. Overall, I was disappointed because it seemed to have good reviews on Yelp. But the price just wasn't worth it for me. Nothing extraordinary about their coffee to justify the price. During a recent visit to Austin, I was in the mood for a caffeine fix. Thankfully, Houndstooth was nearby, and I had a wonderful experience! I don't know if it's just me or the fact that there are a lot of third-wave coffee shops in the Bay Area, but there is always that initial moment when I enter a cafe and worry that the workers may be on the snobbier side of the customer spectrum. Don't get me wrong: I love expertly crafted coffee, but there can be a pretentious air to modern coffee culture that can be off-putting. It turned out that the workers at Houndstooth were quite friendly! The server taking my order patiently explained their various coffee cocktails, and I ended up trying the "9 to 5". The mixture of coffee and vermouth gave it a refreshing yet bitter flavor profile that I enjoyed. FOOD// I ordered a cold brew on a cold day, lol. I do this regularly where I normally drink cold (or eat cold food) on cold days and vice versa on hot/warm days - it's my logic to fight the weather). Anyways, the cold brew looked like a coke w/ ice on a mason jar - don't laugh, haha. The cold brew, itself, was definitely not coke ;) rather I thought it was pretty good! SERVICE// So, I heard the service was terrible, but I found that opposite with my experience - very friendly and efficient. ATMOSPHERE// It is limited in space and limited on outlet availabilities. The outlets are available only on this one specific corner; so, if you are planning on studying, make sure you fully charge everything (or take portable chargers/power extension cord). Other than that, if you can find a spot, it is a pretty good place for you to study at. Light is bright like your future! Plenty of area to sit down in relax inside and outside, however outside can be noisy since it's on a main street.
