Every time I've been to civil goat I've received an amazing drink and amazing service. My favorite drink of theirs is the cajeta cappuccino. It's a cappuccino with a goat milk caramel and it tastes like comfort in a cup. I stopped by after a doctor's appointment at the Ascension Seton medical building down the road. It was a Friday morning, so I anticipated it to be busy and it was. It's probably a great place for UT students to study solo or with friends since it's relatively close. The barista was super patient with me deciding what to get for my first visit to a Civil Goat location. My original food item wasn't available and I quickly had to adapt to the eventual alternative. It was my first time here, and was an OK experience. Crazy busy and crowded on a Friday but this location offers ample space, and I was able to grab a seat on the communal benches in the back room. Good wifi connectivity and not too loud as some other coffee shops are. The barista I placed my order with looked annoyed and was quite unfriendly. First ordered a London Fog latte which I do not recommend. Very weak flavor, watered down, and lukewarm at best. Not what I was hoping for on a cold day. Also very overpriced at $4.50 for a 10 oz tea. I was so disappointed with the tea that I ended up ordering a Vanilla Latte with Oat Milk after, which was much better and to the standard I expected for paying premium latte prices. This is one of the friendliest Coffee places I've been too. From the moment I stepped in our experience was wonderful. The gentleman who took our order was super nice and so easy to talk with, I asked him a few questions about the tea and ended up with the iced London Fog and could not have been happier. It was just the right amount of sweetness with whole milk and was exactly what I needed to start my day. Plus they had the small crushed ice which is always welcomed in coffee over cubes in my opinion. Everything about this coffee shop seemed comfy, cozy and welcoming. THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE CUERNAVACA LOCATION. Mediocre over priced food with little customer care from its employees towards customers. I asked for a fork and knife after ordering an over priced simple and frankly underwhelming avocado toast. I got a look as if i was bothering the employee for such a request. She snarled at me and pointed over to a dark corner and told me forks and cutlery were there. No sign to designate location of cutlery my first time there how was I to know. I tried Civil Goat for the first time today and will definitely be back. FOOD & COFFEE I originally went because I saw they had toasts which feel more like 'real' food than most cafe offerings. I ended up getting an everything bagel however because the avocado toast had bacon on it and I'm a vegetarian. There were other vegetarian and vegan options (cinnamon toast) but most were on the sweet spectrum and I wanted to savory. I wasn't expecting much from the bagel but was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. The cream cheese was a whipped one and I loved it. I just wanted more! I also got a drip coffee that was superb. It was just damn good coffee. I hope to try their espresso and cold brew offerings in the future - if the coffee is any indication, I'm sure they'll be great. VIBE I really enjoyed the vibe and decor inside Civil Goat. It had that calming effect that 'real' cafes have. I felt like I wanted to bring a good book (instead of my work laptop!) and just waste an afternoon away. There are a few 'work-y' tables, a nice social area that had two small communal tables and a loungey area, but most seating was on stools at a bar facing Guadalupe. I was sitting at one of the stools and enjoyed myself but I was only there for about 30 minutes. I feel like it would be tough to do my aforementioned book lounging or even longer than 1hr. It would be tough to socialize with a friend with this set-up. I also could not see any plugs but wasn't looking to hard as I wasn't in need. SERVICE I'm... confused... by the staff. No one was rude to me but no one was nice to me. It's hard to describe. I felt a little bit like I was being a bother but it's not like anyone was overtly rude. I may be reading too much into it but I interacted with three people and not one smiled... and I'm a very smiley person so it felt strange to smile at someone without them smiling back. PARKING There's lots of space in the parking lot. PARENTS I won't be brining my little one here anytime soon. It feels beautifully calm and I feel like a toddler would not fit well. It also has a set-up that would not accommodate any stroller bigger than an umbrella stroller. I'm sure it'd be fine to run in a grab a drink/pastry to go but I can't see myself sitting there with my kiddo. So I can't tell you if the food is gourmet or not. But that coffee, that space and that music and I am good. P.S. The place is crowded. Getting an actual seat at Civil Goat in the morning is like getting into an Ivy League school. If you want to apply for early admission, show up at 8 in the morning when they open. The outside is unremarkable, but the inside is austere, very simply (and nicely) designed. There are two long maple wood bars, one next to the windows for work stations, and one where the orders come out for conversation. Additionally, there are a few tables at one end of the long skinny space. All the service people were polite- there was none of that attitude like "we are doing you a favor by allowing you to grace our space". Thank you, Civil Goat employees! You all are awesome. The coffees were delicious and expertly prepared. My friend had avocado toast and I nibbled on a giant tasty chocolate chip cookie. Reasonable prices and clean. One of my fellow coffee snob brought me here because he loves the cortados. And I must say I agree. The latte art was done beautifully on our cortados (different designs on both) and the barista was wonderful. Normally, the beans they use for the espresso is the "Guatemala" but he let us try it using the "Ethiopian - Yirgacheffe" as well. Out of both cortados that we tried, the Ethiopian was by far both of favorites. The espresso was so bright and fruity and extremely wonderful. It wasn't burnt and the tasting notes, as mentioned, were amazing. Oh, it paired well with the ube cookie they had there! I was excited to go again so I went with a different friend two days later. Different baristas and sadly, the cortado was given to us in a paper to-go cup (the first time was in a shot glass) and there was no latte art. The taste was overall still good, but definitely not the same as my first time. I definitely think there are better days to go. Overall great vibes and experience. I was super excited to check this place out because I have heard great things about Civil Goat. I love the interior of the coffee shop, very minimalistic, a lot of light. There is a bar area along with a separate lounge study area. The shop is a bit on the smaller side so it tends to be quite full without much table space during the busy hours. I got a small Lavender Matcha which was very delicious. The matcha was well mixed, very flavorful, and the lavender was just the right hint of something extra to spice up the matcha a bit. It was a bit on the pricier side given the size of the coffee. I would definitely come back to try out more of their coffee. I would recommend coming here for a quick coffee run or a quick hang out, may be harder to find a table for consistent studying and they close on the earlier side as well. read more
