I had a so many different things happening with my neck and in turn had chronic nerve pain that changed the quality of my life for years. This review was written by my wife, Esther: After struggling for years with chronic back pain, a year of failed epidurals and physical therapy, I had a consultation with Dr. Fox and he asked me, "Can you live with the pain in your back?" I said, "No, but I'm scared because I have diabetes" and he put his hand on my knee and said, "I won't let anything happen to you." At that moment, I made the decision to have Dr. Fox do my surgery. I had spinal stenosis; I needed a spinal fusion in L4-L5, where Dr. Fox said he would build a cage using titanium screws, and a partial discectomy in L2-L3. The operation would take 3 hours. I was so nervous, but I don't even remember going into the operating room. After the surgery, Dr. Fox called my husband and left a message on his cell phone: "Hi Marc, all finished; she's headed to recovery room; everything went well; I'll try again later." I had to stay in the hospital for 3 nights for observation, and then I was taken by ambulance to rehab for 2 weeks. I met Dr Fox when I was in the hospital for a couple herniated discs in my neck. I was in terrible pain, and though we initially discussed surgery, he wanted me to try physical therapy so we weren't jumping into the surgical process. I gave Dr. Fox a well-deserved review after my first surgery -- Yelp decided to hide my good review so here it is again.... Dr. Fox performed a two-level ACDF on my neck. Before surgery I was in constant pain and had suffered muscle loss in my arms and shoulders and legs. Two other doctors said not to do the surgery -- it would not help. Dr. Fox disagreed, but by the time he said he could help I had also lost the ability to hold things and could no longer drive safely. I could not play my guitar and when I turned to art instead, even began dropping my paint brushes. Dr. Fox stopped the pain and stabilized my neck so it won't continue to just keep trying to break apart -- but more important to me -- he gave me back my life. The numbness and tingling and loss of function are gone. I can wash dishes and play guitar and simply take care of myself. After my surgery, my youngest daughter, who has taken such good care of me for about a year now hugged me and said she could now feel comfortable leaving me to go off to college. The treatment I received from Dr Fox was absolutely exceptional. I honestly feel like I struck gold when I found him. Before him, I was seen by countless doctors who continuously made me run out of their offices in tears every single time. All of them would look at me physically and couldn't understand how I could be in so much pain since I was so fit and healthy. Finally, I demanded an mri. Not one of them ordered one for me because of the way I looked, I couldn't do it any more so I demanded one. After getting the results back my doctor at the time said he saw an issue was present but it wouldn't get any worse since I was so young, fit and healthy. I dealt with the pain for a little longer and as time went on I noticed the pain getting worse. I'm a very active person and before I would start my work day I would stretch for at least 30 minutes and it helped but it was not preventing pain. I noticed my quality of life was diminishing and the simple things that we all take for granted was a real struggle, like, bending over, standing up or sitting down. Everything turned into a chore. I was feeling the kind of pain that was beyond aches and discomfort. Anytime I would transition from sitting to standing or vice versa I felt extreme pain and it was excruciating, the kind of pain where you make a face, moan uncontrollably and sweat. No one should ever live like this! I was at my wits end, with not one doctor who believed me I didn't know what to do. I was experiencing a level 10 pain for 6 years. I spent thousands out of my own pocket trying to figure this out to avoid surgery, been to every doctor, exhausted every treatment possible. About a year ago I had a Microdiscectomy for a bulged disc in the L4-L5 area performed by Dr. Andrew Fox and it could not have gone better. The sciatic pain I experienced was gone immediately after the surgery and I was even up and walking around right after as well. I had sciatic pain from the bulge and was using a cane and at times the pain was so bad I couldn't walk. This was especially upsetting because I was only 37 at the time. Dr. Fox bats "3 for 3"--his expertise, experience and bedside manner are second to none. I'd been suffering with leg pain and foot numbness since August. MRI diagnosis: ruptured/bulging disc impinging on the nerve that runs from the back down the leg. I tried everything: nsaids, STEMs, physical therapy, traction, exercise, acupuncture, a regimen of oral steroids and three rounds of epidurals. While I got some nice relief from the epidurals, they began to wear off and the pain was affecting my quality of life (very hard to walk or stand without wincing in pain). At wit's end, I was fortunate enough to be referred to Dr. Fox. I called his office, and (get this) in only a three-day period, I had my initial consult, blood work and physical, and the actual surgery.) He recommended--and I agreed to--a microdiscectomy. The surgery was just yesterday and I'm already getting significant relief from both the leg pain and the foot numbness. It's been exactly two years since my surgery. After extensive physical therapies and pain management efforts (tpi, narcotics, inflammatory drugs, neurontin, antidepressants ) I have to accept that the one sciatic correction that I needed (L3) was completely ignored by Dr. Fox. I remember awaking from my surgery and feeling the powerful nerve pain that I'd wanted to be corrected. Dr. Fox told me that I was "wrong", that my continuing pain was my "imagination". I recently had a single level anterior cervical discectomy with fusion performed by Dr. Fox, and felt the quality of service was high enough to warrant this very positive review. When my neurosurgeon recommended I meet with a surgeon after picking up some significant cervical stenosis on some MRI's, I had no idea who Dr. Fox was, but did ask the neurosurgeon to refer me to someone he had respect for, as well as to someone close to my home in Tarzana. As it turns out Dr. Fox is affiliated with Providence Tarzana, so the logistics of meeting with him and then having surgery so close to home was very convenient. It was very clear to Dr Fox that surgery was my best option. I was a little hesitant to immediately accept that opinion. Even as professional as Dr Fox appeared in that first meeting, and hearing his credentials as former Chief of Neurosurgery & Spinal Surgery for Sutter in Northern California before re-locating south, I still had to make sure I was making the right decision. I am not shy to ask a lot of questions, and Dr Fox patiently and compassionately addressed each of my concerns. Even with that, I knew I had to get a second opinion just to be sure. I may have been thinking that... of course a surgeon will recommend surgery...that's what they do! After independently getting a referral and meeting to see a second surgeon (a referral from one of my closest and respected friends, who is a doctor), I was impressed that this review was in total agreement with Dr. Fox's opinion. I would have even been comfortable using this second surgeon. But Dr Fox was a gentleman, with no overblown sense of entitlement, and I quickly concluded I would be happy for him to perform the surgery, and that he would be successful. It is now almost 3 weeks after surgery. I had no pain following my surgery and all is well from my follow up visit today. Originally from Los Angeles, Dr. Fox recently relocated from Sacramento where he served as Director of Spinal Surgery at Sutter Medical Center and helped develop the spine program After he reviewed my CT myelogram, and other tests, (no MRI for me...pacemaker) Dr. Fox explained that surgery would be the best option for me. He was easy to understand, explained the pros and cons clearly and answered all my questions. He walked me through the basics of the procedure. I was so comfortable with Dr. Fox that I had almost no pre surgery jitters. He performed a right lumbar three to four microdiscectomy and right lumbar four to five hemilaminectomy . Surgery was late afternoon and just after dinner, the nurse had me up walking the halls of the hospital. Prior to surgery, I was bent over in severe pain.
