And unless my memory is failing, his father (Dr. Mitchel Wong) treated my mother's cataracts in the 1980s. I have always been impressed by the state-of-the-art skills and equipment Austin Eye maintains. I'm also impressed that the Wongs have chosen to share their expertise by endowing an eye institute at the University of Texas at Austin. My most recent personal experience with Austin Eye was surgery for lens replacement. While some have derided the facility on Bee Caves Rd as factory-like, I would counter that with the fact that consistent good practices yield consistently good results. I felt well cared for throughout the process, and the results (my excellent recovery and visual acuity) speak for themselves. In the event there had been any problems, I was given Dr. Wong's direct cell number and email. The Austin Eye facility is beautiful, modern, and well-maintained. The same may be said of the older location along Jollyville Rd. I highly recommend Austin Eye for their expertise, state-of-the-art equipment set, and very positive and helpful office staff.

Good news is I found Dr Tom Walters, MD at Texan Eye who is clearly the most knowledgeable, experienced, and highest rated cataract and laser surgeon with the best record of success in all of Texas and likely beyond. Also good news is he determined that I did not need to get cataract surgery at this time as my vision could be corrected to 20/20 at all distances with glasses with the latest progressive lens technology. My wife and I stopped by their optical shop on the way out and I got fitted with a cool pair of rimless glasses that my wife says make me look "hot"!

I scheduled an appointment (I was able to be seen the next day) and the visit went smoothly. The office staff was friendly and efficient, and Dr. Lindsey was delightful. Every good thing Michelle said about Dr. Lindsey was true for me, too. We had a good time chatting about faculty we knew in common. My fears of an eye infection were groundless (my discomfort was most likely due to allergies so she gave me some eyedrops). I had her do a full refraction and eye exam since I was already there. She found my current eyeglass prescription was fine and didn't need to be changed, and that my eyes were perfectly healthy (she said they were likely the healthiest she'd see all day). I'll see her again in a year, and look forward to it. If you need an ophthalmologist who is well-trained in diseases of the eye as well as the normal eyeglass and contact lens fitting, then I recommend Dr. Lindsey. Other physicians who are members of the group practice (The Eye Institute of Austin) appear to be equally stellar in their pedigrees.

So, I decided that my first consultation would be at Eyes of Texas. The entire staff is not only friendly but very informative. It was difficult to ask questions because everything was covered from the start. Dr. Wong is clearly extremely passionate and knowledgeable about his work. I immediately knew that he is who I would trust to take care of my eyes. My surgery was yesterday and I couldn't be happier with the process or results so far. I am really looking forward to the end of the healing process. My only regret is not doing this 10 years ago. I highly recommend that if you are considering getting LASIK surgery to visit Eyes of Texas and Dr. Wong. I was shown the operation room and a comment was made that there was a piece of equipment in there that looked like R2D2. I'm now convinced that Dr. Wong is the Yoda of LASIK. From the beginning, the experience was great. Communication before my appointment was clear, the office was easy to find with plenty of parking, and the clinic was clean, comfortable, and had ample seating. The staff completed all of the standard testing before I met with the doctor, and everything moved along efficiently. I saw Dr. Haumith Khan-Farooqi, and he was fantastic. He was kind, friendly, engaging, and listened to my concerns. I never felt dismissed or rushed. He explained my diagnosis, why surgery was recommended and what the next steps would be. As someone with anxiety, I really appreciated that he didn't brush off my concerns. Instead, he took the time to explain his experience with the procedure. That conversation really put me at ease, and I felt confident scheduling my pre-op appointment before I left. I was offered a sample of dry eye drops and a pair of sunglasses after my eyes were dilated (at checkout), neither of which had been offered at the previous provider. The front desk staff was very upfront about costs. They explained what their office would bill for and gave me the contact information, along with the diagnosis codes, so I could call the surgery center and anesthesiologist directly to get estimates for those costs. I really appreciated that transparency because I like to be an informed consumer and understand my financial responsibility before moving forward. My only suggestion is that after your eyes are dilated, you'll wait in a pretty bright waiting room. I recommend bringing your sunglasses inside with you just in case you have an extended wait in the waiting room. I accidentally left mine in the car so I sat with my eyes closed. This was the complete opposite of my previous experience. I left feeling heard, informed, respected, and confident in my care. My last appointment was in April of 2022, and given that I had LASIK in August of 2022, my vision has changed quite a bit since then! I called on Tuesday to schedule an appointment before the end of the year and they squeezed me in the very next day. Dr. A did a phenomenal job of evaluating my vision and discussing my eyes since I had LASIK. Considering we had a similar level of vision prior to LASIK, I love knowing that she's also speaking from a place of experience when discussing LASIK symptoms. Honestly, my surgeon did a great job and I have 20/20 vision, but she worked with me to help me get a pair of FL-41 (migraine lens) sunglasses with a slight boost for driving, since I always have a pair of car sunglasses and am prone to migraines. The eye glasses fitter did an excellent job of helping me select a pair of frames that looked great and fit my face. We spent a little extra time color matching the FL-41 shade to the jade-colored glasses I selected, but she was so friendly and patient the entire time. All in all, this was a great experience and my only complaint is that the coffee machine took too long so I wasn't able to get a cup of coffee before my appointment began! Not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, so still a 5/5 in my book. This facility is located in a small business center, so there is typically plenty of parking, but certain sections of the parking lot are currently closed as the building undergoes a roof repair. I highly recommend this location and will likely continue coming here even though I live in South Austin now.

They stopped taking Superior Vision about two years ago, but Joe offered a 30% courtesy discount because they no longer accept my insurance. That's why I made an appointment and went in anyway. This year, after another great exam, the new female optician flat-out refused to honor that same discount and spoke to me in a condescending, irritated tone. She insisted the discount only applied to people who had vision insurance they don't accept--not to uninsured patients--and acted like I was wasting her time when I pointed out I could add Superior Vision at work to qualify for the discount and save money. Her attitude made it crystal clear she didn't care whether I stayed or left. To confirm I wasn't imagining things, I took my prescription to Mann Eye Institute. Without me asking, without me explaining anything, they immediately offered a 30% discount for not having vision insurance. No attitude. No excuses. No hoops. Just basic respect and professionalism. Meanwhile, Northwest Hills doesn't even answer their phone anymore. You get a text message instead, and half the time they don't respond. Fantastic doctor. Terrible staff. The difference between Northwest Hills and Mann Eye Center is night and day, and I'm taking my business where I'm treated like a patient--not a problem.
