Edwin Stipe - New truck for our growing plumbing department arrived this week.

I actually wanted to do the job myself but it was pretty involved. It would have taken me about 8 hours to fix. It was done professionally in just less than 4 hours. Awesome company to work with! Will recommend highly.

We recently had a furnace and water heater installed by Edwin Stipe and, based on this…read moreinstallation, I would never recommend them to anyone. Here's the story: Several years ago, Edwin Stipe replaced our A/C. We were happy with the install, and happy with the technicians who have been inspecting the unit as part of the service plan. This is why we chose Edwin Stipe for the furnace and water heater install. Tim Fleischood of Edwin Stipe came to our house and made recommendations for the work. It sounded reasonable, and based on past work, we went ahead with the job. One of the problems I had with the old furnace was the filter was located inside the furnace and it was always collapsing. Tim said no one installed the filter in the furnace anymore, and promised it would be on the outside in the ductwork. Installation day came. The workers were friendly and respectful of our property, donning booties to keep the floor clean as the brought equipment and tools in and out of the house. This is where the positives end. When the installation was complete, I discovered the filter was installed inside the furnace, just like Tim said it would NOT be. The workers said it would be OK and the filter would not collapse. I grudgingly said OK, and they left. When they left, they said someone would contact me for the permit inspections. The A/C was running and after a couple of hours I decided to check out the filter. I had to remove 4 or 5 sheet metal screws to access the filter (ridiculous!) and the filter was indeed collapsing. Looking at the installation, I noticed, among other things, the gas to the furnace was off. WTH? Clearly the furnace was never tested, and no one said anything about returning any time to turn on the gas or testing the furnace! There were also massive air leaks in the duct work where they had installed a transition piece for the new furnace. I contacted Tim, explained my frustration, and he said they would return. The same tech who did the installation returned (I hope he never returns again). He told me (believe it or not), it doesn't matter if there are air leaks because its in the house. What?? He had absolutely no answer as to why the gas was left off and asked if I wanted the furnace tested. Uh, yeah! The tech turned on the gas and ran the furnace for about 30 seconds. He cut a very jagged hole in the side of the ductwork, mutilated a filter because it didn't fit, and cut a piece of exhaust flue in half, straightened it out, and screwed it over the filter. I was livid! It was the worst hack job I've ever seen. I contacted Tim (yet again) and sent him a picture of what was done. He promised that someone would come out fix everything. A few days later, another installation team came out and installed a proper filter holder. They left and I thought all was good. After a month and a half, I contacted Edwin Stipe to ask if a permit was applied for, because no one had contacted me for an inspection. They said they had mailed the permit information to me and I would have to contact the township for the inspection. OK, but it would have been nice if they had told me that in the beginning! Well, today were the inspections, one for electrical, one for mechanical. The electrical inspector noted that the top of the 2 foot conduit was not supported and it should be. He said it was sloppy work and he would talk to the installer. He didn't fail it, since I said I'd support the conduit. The mechanical inspector noted that the exhaust for the water heater should have a minimum of 3 screws equally spaced at each exhaust joint. Of four joints, only one had enough screws holding it together. He gave me the option of him failing the inspection or I could add screws. I promised to add screws. As much as I would have wanted Edwin Stipe to return and complete the job to the point it could pass inspection, I really didn't want to schedule them to come out yet another time, and have to reschedule the inspection. Plus, I'm not really sure they would have done it correctly. So, zero communication, three visits to complete the installation, sloppy work, and an installation I had to complete in order to pass inspection. Would I recommend Edwin Stipe? Certainly not!

We had an installation that seemed to go okay, but it soon became apparent that he had skipped…read moreunskippable corners. A number of things were fixed after several emergencies in the first two years, although he was always extremely difficult to get a hold of and all to ready to make false accusations of the family member living where the unit was. To say it was unprofessional was an understatement, but when you're dependent on someone's cooperation, you make do. This is a household with elderly people and a severely disabled person! Additionally he had failed to make one of the returns, the proper size, a problem, which was multiplied by the fact that we had electrostatic filters in, so they were making the most horrendous noise, and unable to do their job. We paid for him to fix that as if it was our fault.) I should also say that during this time, we initially used his sons for maintenance, but they were telling us things didn't need to be done that did need to be done. And then he became harder and harder to communicate with even forgetting and maintenance schedule. So we went with someone else for maintenance. But then chronic outages began--many times per week--for which we again needed to call upon him as the original installer (mind you, this is all within the first few years!). Andy was completely negligent, uncommunicative, and irresponsible in how he handled these both with us and the manufacturer, leaving a severely disabled and heat sensitive individual in a lurch for an entire spring and summer and causing intractable physical harm. We felt like we could not move on to someone else because of how tied the warranty business can be to the installer. Nonetheless another contractor was finally acquired on the second year and pressed the manufacturer just one more time and got the most essential problem taken care of with a snap of the fingers. I mean it took all of a week to get the most essential bit taken care of to stop the outages (Andy had failed to properly sync up the system with the generic electric board replacement the previous summer--his one attempt at fixing the problem). A friend who is an HVAC contractor felt like Andy was trying to avoid taking the typical amount of responsibility a contractor has to take for a replacement (manufacturers are known for almost always using their weight to not fully honor warranties), since at the time it looks like the entire unit was just a dud. Anyhow, every contractor who has come in here has acknowledged some puzzlement over Andy's installation choices, but now we are being told about many more installation problems w photographic evidence that clearly confirms at least portions of the problem (the unit is in the attic). Additionally, when it was installed, Andy never replaced the drain line, because he simply could not find the drain line and simply threw his hands up with a shrug. He could not figure out where it went to. You NEED to know where the dream line goes to in order to choose the correct furnace to put in. There are types of furnaces, which cannot drain to the outside. They need to drain to inside plumbing. Well, it turns out that we have that type of furnace, even though the drain line goes to our gutter. So now we are additionally looking at major installation errors and probably an unsafe furnace. I hate writing bad reviews and usually second-guess myself when I must due to recognizing that contractor's livelihoods are on the line, but I feel there is no choice but to warn others away in this case. He's a good salesperson--a bad contractor. As a previous review were indicated, it is more than a little suspect that his company name has changed three or four times already. I can only imagine he's trying to make it difficult for people to write reviews like this one. I would never have been able to dig up a current company name, if my smart thermostat hadn't alerted me to the current name. And, honestly, I was very tempered in what I said about the interpersonal dynamic.

I paid $1,950, plus an additional $100 for the initial diagnosis, to have the compressor in my HVAC system replaced. He installed it -- but it failed within just a few days. When I reached out, he told me the compressor was under warranty, but not the labor, meaning I'd have to pay over $1,000 again to fix a problem caused by his own installation. He also said he didn't know what caused the failure and couldn't guarantee it wouldn't happen again -- which didn't inspire confidence. Out of desperation, and not wanting to be caught in another heatwave, I hired a second technician to inspect the system. That inspection revealed multiple serious issues: The attic unit was never accessed or flushed -- a required step after a burnout The filter-drier was reused and visibly rusted, which is a recipe for failure The capacitor used was one I had installed myself, not a new one The compressor was not properly matched to my 2.0-ton system Worse, the second inspection confirmed that, due to the compressor burning out a second time and the system not being properly flushed the first time, there was now twice the level of acid contamination in the system. At that point, saving the system was no longer an option -- the only solution was a full replacement. Aaron clearly knew this, and that's why he kept saying he couldn't guarantee it would work. Yet instead of taking responsibility, he kept making me lose time and money -- while offering to reinstall the same compressor without fixing the root issue or standing behind the work. After I tried to resolve things respectfully, he refunded me only $650, charging me for a failed installation and a compressor that stopped working due to his own negligence. I asked for a full refund, but he refused -- saying his offer to reinstall the compressor (with no labor warranty) was enough. But I had already lost confidence. I didn't pay for guesses -- I paid for a working AC system. From my personal experience, I strongly recommend getting everything in writing and making sure the contractor stands behind both parts and labor. It's not just about being nice -- it's about doing the job right the first time. Your family's comfort, safety, and time matter.
