He came out within an hour and tried to fix my a/c, even going for a part, but it was just done. He sent me an estimate a day and a half later. The cost was very reasonable and he specified everything he would do. I accepted and he gave me a date - didn't have to wait weeks! - and everything went exactly as he said. They showed up on time, were so pleasant and courteous, replaced the entire a/c system, cleaned up and took away the old unit, and there were no surprises at the end with extra charges. A perfect experience! Go to Ray's website - everything he says about his approach to his business is 100% true. Huge thank you to R & D HVAC!

When you call for help with air conditioning on a 90+ degree day, you expect prompt service. Mr. Hengeveld was at my home earlier than expected and a welcome sight. Mr. Hengeveld was competent in his assessment of the issue I was having. His estimate for the work was spot on. Mr. Hengeveld worked conservatively as to not run up the bill. Mr. Hengeveld had four opportunities to make and keep agreements based on his word: 1) He arrived earlier than expected, (good thing). 2) When he left to buy parts he returned as he stated in a timely manner. 3) The cost of the parts was as he stated. 4) When the work was completed, it was done thoroughly with care. The reason I chose Mr. Hengeveld was the fact that he put his name on his business. There is something to be said for the pride of ownership he exhibits. I would highly recommend R&D Hengeveld HVAC to anyone needing help getting the cool or hot air flowing.

We recently had a furnace and water heater installed by Edwin Stipe and, based on this…read moreinstallation, I would never recommend them to anyone. Here's the story: Several years ago, Edwin Stipe replaced our A/C. We were happy with the install, and happy with the technicians who have been inspecting the unit as part of the service plan. This is why we chose Edwin Stipe for the furnace and water heater install. Tim Fleischood of Edwin Stipe came to our house and made recommendations for the work. It sounded reasonable, and based on past work, we went ahead with the job. One of the problems I had with the old furnace was the filter was located inside the furnace and it was always collapsing. Tim said no one installed the filter in the furnace anymore, and promised it would be on the outside in the ductwork. Installation day came. The workers were friendly and respectful of our property, donning booties to keep the floor clean as the brought equipment and tools in and out of the house. This is where the positives end. When the installation was complete, I discovered the filter was installed inside the furnace, just like Tim said it would NOT be. The workers said it would be OK and the filter would not collapse. I grudgingly said OK, and they left. When they left, they said someone would contact me for the permit inspections. The A/C was running and after a couple of hours I decided to check out the filter. I had to remove 4 or 5 sheet metal screws to access the filter (ridiculous!) and the filter was indeed collapsing. Looking at the installation, I noticed, among other things, the gas to the furnace was off. WTH? Clearly the furnace was never tested, and no one said anything about returning any time to turn on the gas or testing the furnace! There were also massive air leaks in the duct work where they had installed a transition piece for the new furnace. I contacted Tim, explained my frustration, and he said they would return. The same tech who did the installation returned (I hope he never returns again). He told me (believe it or not), it doesn't matter if there are air leaks because its in the house. What?? He had absolutely no answer as to why the gas was left off and asked if I wanted the furnace tested. Uh, yeah! The tech turned on the gas and ran the furnace for about 30 seconds. He cut a very jagged hole in the side of the ductwork, mutilated a filter because it didn't fit, and cut a piece of exhaust flue in half, straightened it out, and screwed it over the filter. I was livid! It was the worst hack job I've ever seen. I contacted Tim (yet again) and sent him a picture of what was done. He promised that someone would come out fix everything. A few days later, another installation team came out and installed a proper filter holder. They left and I thought all was good. After a month and a half, I contacted Edwin Stipe to ask if a permit was applied for, because no one had contacted me for an inspection. They said they had mailed the permit information to me and I would have to contact the township for the inspection. OK, but it would have been nice if they had told me that in the beginning! Well, today were the inspections, one for electrical, one for mechanical. The electrical inspector noted that the top of the 2 foot conduit was not supported and it should be. He said it was sloppy work and he would talk to the installer. He didn't fail it, since I said I'd support the conduit. The mechanical inspector noted that the exhaust for the water heater should have a minimum of 3 screws equally spaced at each exhaust joint. Of four joints, only one had enough screws holding it together. He gave me the option of him failing the inspection or I could add screws. I promised to add screws. As much as I would have wanted Edwin Stipe to return and complete the job to the point it could pass inspection, I really didn't want to schedule them to come out yet another time, and have to reschedule the inspection. Plus, I'm not really sure they would have done it correctly. So, zero communication, three visits to complete the installation, sloppy work, and an installation I had to complete in order to pass inspection. Would I recommend Edwin Stipe? Certainly not!

They were on time, checked out the AC, added coolant and then took a quick peek at the furnace. They said both look good for the age (17 years) and should be good for a while. I had questions about rebates for heat pumps and he had answers about rebates, rough costs and advantages of the new heat pumps. He reiterated that we didn't need to change out our current equipment but if we feel it's important for environmental reasons there are good options. We'll definitely be using them going forward, and have a fall furnace checkup scheduled.

On the first cold day this winter he claims the heater is all rusted out in the exchanger and has to be replaced, along with the entire system because a new heater can't work with an old air conditioner. Our neighbor suggested we call their guy. He's been in business for 30 years. Needless to say, the heater was not rusted he showed me the unit was very dirty, the fan motor and wheel were clogged with dirt and there were two dead birds in the chimney. The outside air conditioner was only 10 years old. I'm convinced SK had never done anything other than collect their fee and try to sell stuff we didn't want or need.

Our house presented some challenges for the electricians and their portion of the work took longer than expected. The inspector found an issue with a previous electrical upgrade. We were able to hire Evoke to fix that problem and reschedule the inspector. There was another situation with a breaker installed by Evoke that prevented us from being able to monitor our total power generation but that was also fixed in a timely fashion. We did not seek a second estimate because we had been sufficiently impressed by Evoke's work on other houses in our area. The price was steep but it factors out to expectations based on our research. It should pay for itself in less than 12 years; less if electricity rates rise more than is currently predicted. Our only complaint would be that, as homeowners, we were not always communicated with as thoroughly as we would have liked. If we had been told where the electricians would need to be, we would have moved things to make things more accessible. And a heads' up about the number and location of all of the new outside connection boxes would have made it possible to plan how we would deal with them being so visible beside the front door. But those are minor concerns in the overall project. We are very pleased to watch our electric bill drop to next to nothing and we anticipate earning some money back through solar credits.
