This fall, after speaking with several contractors, big and small, I contracted Carl Volkman & Sons to install a Mitsubishi FH18NA mini-split heat pump. I chose that unit as it appeared to be the newest model and it would still heat down to a ridiculously low temperature, minus 15F. I chose Carl because of all the contractors I got the feeling that he was most concerned about getting it right. He asked lots of questions about my home and my needs. He was sensitive to my financial restraints. I felt like WE arrived at the best solution. The easy part of the whole thing turned out to be the install. The Mitsubishi unit is really well designed. Carl appears to know the install inside and out. After all was said and done I have affordable heat that worked like magic through the coldest nights so far (5deg). Since then I had Carl back to install a slightly smaller Mitsubishi downstairs. My coal stove is unused and my wife is happy. I have dealt with a lotta hvac specialists whether it's big companies or a mom and dad business, but most of them were unreliable and make you wait at least a week and rip you off on top of that. Carl was such a good person that took the job to heart and said he can still show up till 10 at night to repair the furnace if that's okay with me. When my Heat Pump system went out right before the heatwave was scheduled to hit, I called the HVAC company I've been using for years. They couldn't get out for 2 weeks - even for an existing customer. I called many other companies, they either weren't taking new customers or couldn't schedule me for up to 6 weeks!
