Two eggs over easy with crispy hash browns, ham, and gluten free toast.

Classic American diner feel including a counter. Nice and friendly service. Ample off street parking. The ham did not disappoint. Bonus that they have gluten free toast as an option.

Stopped for a drink and maybe some eats. Got a good gin and tonic and decided on an order of fries. The service was good this time, and that depends highly on who's behind the bar.if you are sitting there, which I was. The fries were excellent actually and I took half home, while still eating a large portion. The only thing I will say is the order had lots of tiny bits, really tiny bits of baby fries not big enough to be counted, never reaching their full fry potential. Lol. Just fillers or maybe they just put the potatoes through a cutter and toss the whole thing in?? Later I ordered the little app bites of veggies and hummus or ranch. Pretty straightforward and good but I found it odd that it had two little peppers stuffed in there whole.? Was I supposed to munch around the edges avoiding all the seeds? Just odd. Seemed like someone got tired of chopping. Anyway all was good. Certainly nothing to stop me from recommending or going again, just once in a while wonder about some smaller things you'll find.

Friend had bangers and mash and it was so well presented - he took a picture because it was so well prepared! He said it was delicious and scraped the plate clean! The Cottage is one of the long time favorites for locals. A lot of great drinks and unexpectedly great food. You can find meaty and vegetarian options including burgers, fish, and pizza. Basically we weren't expecting much from this bar. It's mostly like a sports bar, cluttered inside. The food was to be an afterthought, we thought. Actually looks like a cottage inside. Lots of wood fixtures and paneling. It's about $12 for cocktails. Seasonal ones include margaritas for summer, toddys for winter. It's about $18 for a pizza. We got the Veggie Pizza, which has green peppers, mushrooms, onions, spinach, and tomatoes. Also there's Mexican options including burrito bowls and fajitas. There's even vegan chorizo as a topping. Great options in this bar that's better than typical bar food. It's got a rotating menu with lots of things added for the season. This is located on Crystal Lake Avenue at Walkup.

The menu rotates often, which keeps things interesting and gives it a true fresh, seasonal vibe. Every visit turns into a debate because there are always multiple things worth trying. What really sets it apart now is the new outdoor seating. It's added a whole new layer to the experience--people are settling in, kids are enjoying the play area, and it's turning into more than just a place to eat. It feels like a neighborhood gathering spot. The atmosphere is easy and welcoming without trying too hard, and you can feel the energy building as more people discover it. Service has been solid, and overall it just feels like a place that's going to keep getting better. Bottom line: Lake Roots isn't just a good addition--it's becoming part of the fabric of Crystal Lake.
