I don't like to write a lot of reviews but I really have to commend this place. To preface everything, my family and I visit this restaurant often. I was there on Easter Sunday with my family enjoying my (delicious) meal when we heard some commotion at a nearby table. The commotion was coming from a server who seemed to be having some sort of informal meeting with upper management. The server was basically yelling at upper management and being very rude. I don't even think upper management was able to get a word in. Since I'm always here with family, I know one of the managers on a first name basis (Eric). Eric is such a kind and helpful employee. He was one of the individuals being yelled at by this server. I'm not sure the other managers name but she had dark hair. They did a great job handling the very uncomfortable situation. I felt so bad for both of them having to deal with this situation on top of a holiday weekend. Besides the managers handling this situation with such grace, everything else was awesome! I was in the area visiting friendly. We tried an unsavory (well-known) breakfast restaurant the day before, so we tried to re-do it with a new spot. Buttered Toast is a cozy, chic bistro in the Algonquin/Crystal Lake area. Our waitress's was prompt, although she did disappear when we wanted our check. A simple flag down and someone else was able to help us. The food wasn't bad either. My Dad got a Breakfast with 2 Eggs, Ham and Pancakes. He said it wasn't anything remarkable, but wasn't bad. I enjoyed my Chilaquiles but the chips were rather soggy. It was pretty filling. Very limited coffee options. More staff is needed to have quicker service. We would come back if need-be. read more

Service was great- food was like a disappointing Dennys? Overall, even the simple dishes like an eggs over easy or hash browns were missing salt. The bacon that was ordered extra with the pancakes was barely cooked. The blueberry pancakes crumbled like they were gluten free - strange texture. I returned to Buttered Toast to try some french toast. I've been on a french toast kick lately. Everything was pretty much the same with service and food being average. I've been to Buttered Toast many times; mostly with friends or with my kids before a day of shopping (we used to always have brunch here on our school supply shopping day). This visit was with my mom and 17 year old daughter for a late breakfast before spending the day shopping. We arrived at around 10:30 and we were seated right away. Our waitress was super pleasant and attentive but not overly so. My daughter had the chocolate chip pancakes, my mom had an omelette and I had a kids turkey sandwich. I usually hate writing reviews, but I had to say something about this. I came in with my family on Easter and was given amazing service. The food was great and the employees were wonderful. However, we overheard upper management trying to scold an employee for some reason. She kept asking for an example and they couldn't even give her one. It seemed like they just wanted to let her go. Meanwhile, these two upper management people were taking all the labor hours on Easter but not setting a good example for their employees by actually working they were sitting the whole time, probably figuring out how to write her up or fire her. One of them was a girl with jet black hair, and she had another guy with her. The way they were treating this girl was disgusting. I've had bad management before and this set me off. I don't know what she did, but it's not always the employee's fault and the way they were going about it was completely unprofessional. I went up and told them how rude it was to be doing this on Easter, and they laughed straight in our faces. This place has no empathy for their employees. I'm glad we overheard this conversation coming from upper management because now we know. I really liked the food here and the employees, but just because of how upper management was treating her, it's a no go. We will not be returning because of specifically upper management. I love this place! I visited with a friend for the first time on March 23. I ordered the chicken chilaquiles, which was delicious - great flavors, perfect spice and generously portioned. As good as the food was, the highlight for me was the fantastic latte art! After I told our server, Nate, about my quest for great latte art, a super talented employee named Joy presented me with the best latte art I've ever had -- an animal! It was truly impressive! Nate was also fantastic -- very friendly, helpful and attentive. Overall, he and Joy provided the best service I've had anywhere in quite awhile. We stopped in for breakfast this morning. We were greeted friendly and seated promptly. Our server, Amanda came to the table right after to greet us, get drinks. Through out our visit our table was visited by several members of the team to refill water, coffee and remove plates. I went with over medium eggs(they were cooked perfectly) along with Turkey sausage links that were pretty tasty. We came here for a weekend early brunch and although they were busy, we could see they were very well staffed and there was good turnover of tables. Our waitress was excellent even offering my parents extra strawberry lemonade to go. We all enjoyed our food including crispy chicken and pancakes, Denver omelette, and the special bacon Benedict dish. The portion sizes were good and we all finished our dishes! There are other breakfast places with larger portions if you want to be able to take food home but here they have quality made food. We like to not just eat in but also uber from here quite frequently. The problem is they never remember the whip cream, cinnamon sugar and they don't cover the yogurt parfait on delivery. They also miss notes often. It's frustrating to spend the money and not get what you order. Can you say disgusting? That's how I would describe buttered toast. Had the displeasure of coming here with husband. Typically we go to Syrup (we will be back to Syrup!) after our disgusting experience at Buttered toast. This is probably one of the worst breakfast places that I have tried and I have eaten at countless restaurants both in the US and abroad. I ordered what I frequently order at Syrup - crepes. How can you screw up crepes? The menu clearly states that the crepes come with either strawberry, blueberry or bananas I think. Everyone with half a brain also knows that crepes are filled. At this place the unpleasant waitress with a huge attitude took our order - I ordered the crepes and she asked me what type of fruit I wanted. I said strawberries and blueberries. When this woman brings me the crepes they are the most disgusting look thing I have ever seen - I don't think dog food would be so unappetizing. The crepes are clearly OLD - crusty, falling apart, and EMPTY - I'm like what is this? There is no filling. There was NO FRUIT! The entitled attitude filled woman tells me - well that's how we always serve them. So they essentially misrepresent their menu which clearly says that it comes with fruit, and it comes with no fruit but rather a fake, disgusting, old, artificial compote in a little serving thing. What the heck? The crepes are so old that they are cracking. How cheap are they that they essentially serve empty shells of old dough and call it a crepe? This inept waitress comes back like she has no common sense and asks how everything is tasting - I said terrible and she walks away. My husband's dish was equally disgusting - the bacon was the cheap type - flat, thin and greasy. At Syrup, Pancake house and most other good quality restaurants bacon is thick, curly, crispy. Not this garbage that they serve here. The eggs seemed fake - he ordered scrambled egg and he got a square dense thing of yellow looking artificial crap. He couldn't believe how dense his "eggs" were. The French toast was disgusting also - a thick chump of cheap bread with egg, and cinnamon. Gross. The hostess who seat us initially also had a terrible attitude - we asked if we could seat at a booth and she didn't even bother answering - she just moved our menus. These people act atrociously, a complete embarrassment in addition to having terrible food. Cheap food served with an attitude. Awesome. If I could I'd give it a zero. Yum, yum, yum! Although we had visited Burnt Toast for breakfast on many occasions, we'd never ventured into their lunch menu. What a mistake! Our food was so, so delicious. Never expected to get such a tasty burger at a breakfast place! Also, it was cooked to a perfect medium - not a rare feat, at all. My wife RAVED about the chicken pot pie.
