I came to the gardens specifically for this cafe. It says it opens at 10:30 am, but it actually opens at 11 am so someone should update that. But I walked around the gardens for a bit which was beautiful and watched a bunch of people be fit as I thought about all the delicious sweet calories I would have after... I cannot rave enough about their hot chocolate. I would say it's more like what I would deem "liquid chocolate" on other menus. It's very rich and very chocolate-y. I was pleasantly surprised that the hot chocolate wasn't overly sweet and saturated with sugar. It was served with a nice little whipped cream as well. It was just amazingly rich but also not so sweet. I got the Mont Blanc as well, but the coconut rendition as I'm lactose (not sure from the menu if it's coconut milk based or still milk tbh, but I took a lactose pill so it was fine). Mont Blanc, delicious, but TOO sweet over time for me. The center was this passion fruit jam of sorts which was good to cut the sweetness and I liked the sugar based bottom which was like a wafer almost (I have no good vocabulary for this off the top of my head). Beautiful café situated right next to the wonderful Luxembourg Gardens. Tried French hot chocolate here for the first time today and have mixed feelings. I only ordered the hot chocolate because I had heard it was extremely rich, but my friends also ordered a Mont Blanc and a Castiglione. The hot chocolate is served in a pitcher with a whole dish of whipped cream on the side, and you pour the chocolate into your cup and stir in the whipped cream. The chocolate was extremely rich, not too sweet, and not too bitter while the whipped cream was buttery and thick. The mixed feelings come from this--the first cup was wonderful, but I still had a lot of chocolate left in my pitcher and I just couldn't drink anymore; it was rich to the point of making me sick. Overall a good experience, but I might not do it again. Maybe I'll try the teas instead next time. read more

I loved this place nestled right next to Luxembourg garden. Perhaps it was because I went there on a hot day (who wants tea and cocoa when it's 95 degrees out) but it was waaay less crowded than other locations. It is seriously expensive, but in my opinion, worth it. The hot chocolate is amazing, served to you with plenty left over in the creamer for an extra cup or two. It's as if they literally melted a dark chocolate bar and gave it to you. Even has the thick (almost pudding like) texture as it cools. The salmon salad was actually quite delightful. It had smoked salmon, avocado, and grapefruit on top of romaine lettuce. Honestly the lettuce was standard and I could've done without, but the pairings on top left me happy with it. Despite Angelina's huge hot chocolate hype, the real achievement to me was the Mont Blanc tea - it's super tasty in a non over empowering way. Very sweet maple with the savory nuttiness of chestnut left me purchasing some tea bags to go. I've yet to reach the same flavor at home, which is quite disappointing - I'm guessing they're like teavana and pack 2-3x's the "recommended" steeping amount to really give you an intense flavor profile. In any case, I hold out hope for the same flavor as I got in the store, so wish me luck! Definitely worth trying hot chocolate AND tea. read more

Note: this location does NOT have the White Hot Chocolate - only the Dark. Seated in the middle of the small restaurant, the light was brilliant, streaming in from the abundance of windows. The service was prompt and polite. We ordered the Dark Hot Chocolate and a Chocolate Croissant and upon first bite thought, certainly, this would be the most delicious moment of our two weeks in Paris. The hot chocolate is presented in a small pitcher alongside an empty cup and saucer - all accompanied by a delightful dollop of whipped cream sitting in its own small bowl. As I poured, small clumps of actual chocolate would make their way into my cup. I immediately thought of Wonka's chocolate river. I felt as though I had been served a pitcher from it. No line so we were very happy to walk right in and be seated. As soon as we ordered the cafe filled up although no queue formed. We were there during the offseason but even waiting is not that bad with the garden so close by. The hot chocolate is the best my wife and I have ever slurped. I literally scraped the edges of the serving and sipping cups with bread to soak up every last drop. From there, the croque madame is fantastic, drippy, and drooly goodness. Not substantial in size but outsized flavor-wise. The Bianca dessert is soft and crunchy balanced perfectly with fresh raspberries. The fondant wrap at the bottom is just the right amount of sweet to end a meal. In fact, I got there around 11 a.m. And there were three of us. The space is brightly lit and looks like my idea of a tea room (which works out since that's what it is). It was a rainy morning and she told me it would be a good time to go. Now, despite my love of most things cacao-related, I'm not really a huge fan of hot chocolate... but man do these guys make it good. They serve a small jug of melted chocolate that is thick and piping hot, with a little pot of fresh whipped cream. Combine the two and voilà! Heaven. Contrary to most hot chocolate, Angelina's is not rich and/or overly sweet - it's got the perfect level of bitterness and, if that's your thing then you could drink it sans whipped cream. I also had a Craquant Noisette. It was OK but I expected a little more decadence in the way of flavor. Service: Good. Since the restaurant is over crowded the servers work fast and are very attentive; they gave us our food and drink refills quickly. I have a problem with the name itself but let's just skip that part. I ordered that and the "truffle croque monsieur." The hot chocolate came and I was weirded out because the hundreds of pictures I looked through on Yelp and Instagram had a cup of cream. Mine was just chocolate. So I asked where it was and the waitress, without any sympathy or explanation prior to my question said in the most coldest tone, "the machine doesn't work today." Okay-- you couldn't tell me while I was ordering so I knew what I was getting myself into? So I ended up paying 8 euros for a cup of chocolate. The machine eventually worked when I had maybe two sips left so I asked for some and they brought me about a spoonful of cream. JUST A SPOONFUL FOR 8 EUROS? Literally they were so rude about it. If they were even slightly apologetic about it I would not have left with such a bad taste in my mouth. Then came my meal. It was horrible. There was no truffle. If I am paying 17 euros for an average sandwich, I want to at least be able to taste the truffle. Only one side of the bread was cooked so the bottom layer was soggy. I had to drown it in tabasco to make it even somewhat edible. Then my bill came. I gave them 50.7 euros since my bill came out to be 25.7 euros. That means it was an easy 25 euros back. They gave me 24.7 euros. I know it's only .3 euros of a difference but what the hell? Do you not even know how to do simple math?! I wanted to ask but the servers must have known I was upset and they never looked my way agin. I will never be coming here again and I will never recommend my friends to visit. If you are into rich dark chocolate this is for you.. if your not and you aren't sure order a to go cup for 4 euros as opposed to 8 for eatting in. We went after reading all the great reviews and all the recommendations for their hot chocolate. The desserts and hit chocolate were a bit rich for our taste, hence the 4 star rating, but I believe it is just due to the fact that we are not used to it. It's a lot creamier and sweeter than your regular hot cocoa from Starbucks or Tully's. But hey when in Paris, you do as the Parisians do. A lot to appreciate here. In any case, the hot chocolate is probably nothing like what you're used to (i.e. a smooth and overall very liquid-y texture). This hot chocolate is like someone took 3 bars of chocolate and melted it and served it to you. It is extremely thick and very rich. We kind of regretted eating this before our dinner as it really filled us up. The flavor was good, but ultimately it wasn't for us. This branch of Angelina is quietly nestled next to Musee Luxembourg - it doesn't have the same lines that the branches at Rivoli and Galeries Lafayette do! Same classics: le Mont Blanc (great if you like chestnut cream and meringue) or the Choc African(much better than the Mont Blanc - its simply an almost perfectly sophisticated chocolate mousse with different layers and texture). It had the perfect balance between the sweetness and the natural bitterness from cocoa butter. The portions were quite generous. It was a perfect "dessert" shared between me and my husband. We also had a ham sandwich which felt like a gourmet sandwich you'd get from afternoon teas. Angelina is a chain restaurant specialized in breakfast and brunch.
