Great for all those who have a sweet tooth. Keep in mind that eating here is not so much for the overall dining experience as it is for simply experiencing Angelina's iconic hot chocolate and pasties. I had dinner here with my family. We came here on recommendation of a friend who studied abroad in Paris.
RESTAURANT: It seems that this location of Angelina was one of the more popular ones; a long line was outside when arrived slightly before 5pm. It moved at a decent pace, and the hostesses were attentive in prepping tables -- e.g. checking us in while we were in line, etc. A little impersonal though.
The interior of Angelina is divided into a front bakery that sells pastries, and a large restaurant in the back with layers and layers of tea rooms. The decor has a classic-look and is dimly lit; it feels like you've stepped into an early 20th century restaurant, which makes sense as an aesthetic decision since Angelina was founded in 1903.
My fellow foreigners: THERE'S FREE WIFI HERE. Use the one " *Angelina-Rivoli " -- the one with the asterisk actually goes through.
SERVICE: We had a kind French waiter who humored my sister's elementary French skills. There are many waiters on staff, and although our initial waiter essentially disappeared after taking our order (lol), all staff was quick to attend to our needs. They're clearly busy and rushing about, but they're all polite and warm upon interaction -- keep in mind the interaction is probs self-initiated :/
DRINKS: **THE HOT CHOCOLATE** (9€) Angelina is iconic for its hot chocolate which is so thick and rich, it's essentially just melted chocolate. The whipped cream that they put on top is unsweetened and fluffy; it tastes like how I'd imagine whipped half and half to taste like.
If you have LESS of a sweet tooth like my fam: consider ordering a pot of tea on the side. It's pretty heavy and hard to handle otherwise. Our Oolong Tea was standard. We received a refill of hot water when requested. Probs saved us from all the sugar.
FOOD (ENTREES): We ordered the 1) Caesar Salad (23€), 2) French Onion Soup (11€), 3) Croque-Monsieur (17€), and 4) Foie Gras (23€). All were average or below. Portions are surprisingly small except the Caesar Salad.
Worthy of note was the freshness and Parmesan cheese of the Caesar Salad, and the balsamic vinaigrette on the side mesclun salad of the Croque-Monsieur. On the other hand, the Foie Gras only came with two triangles of toast and a small dollop of fig chutney. Although the Foie Gras itself wasn't bad, the dish as a whole lacked complexity.
FOOD (DESSERTS): We ordered the 1) Mont Blanc and 2) Paris New-York. Both were SO GOOD. ***Pastries are what Angelina excels at*** -- lesson learned. It was just a lot to eat with the chocolate as a paired drink.
IN SUM: I'd suggest to simply come to Angelina for it's hot chocolate and its pastries. Order a pot of tea, or orange juice, lemon water, or something -- ANYTHING -- to cut through the richness of this decadent treat. Don't expect to have the service that would be suggested by its €€€ price, but I do think the sweets alone are worth the visit and € :) read more
