Medium shrimp and biscuit is so addicting that I have brought all my friends and family to try this meal. The pasta the sauce the meat and everything on this menu is phenomenal. One star would be so greatly giving this place more than it deserves. If you like Italian food that could have been made by my dead grandmother than this is your place. The service is comparable to that of a maximum security prison. The decor is supposed to fool you into thinking it's old school Italian, but it's really just a lack of imagination and probably even more a result of poor sales over the years. The don't accept credit cards so they obviously don't make enough money to afford the minimum fees associated with that "advanced technology". Oh yeah and worst of all the food sucks!!! this restaurant was written up in the paper...so it must be good. I come from BKLYN where there are many excellent Italian restaurants. Was hoping this place would compare to where i used to live. NOT AT ALL! the worst food i have ever had. Choices are limited and all they offer are different pastas (spaghetti, rigatoni etc.) with red sauce or garlic. the place was very crowded but i think the people there do not know what GOOD Italian food is. This food is over rated and mediocre at best. The red sauce was heavy and pasty. The linguini and clams sauce was nasty and they used canned clams. I wouldn't waste my money going here. The menu is boring with no options and pricey for chicken parm kind of restaurant. The waiter John was nasty when I sent back the filet because it wasn't cooked medium rare. He came back to me after he took the steak in the kitchen and yelled at me that the steak was a perfect medium rare, even though the whole steak was well except the very center. It wasn't cooked evenly for a $34 filet mignon. And then he took the napkin and snapped it in my face and walked away. The customer should always be right but he had a nasty attitude. I spoke to the owner and not only did she not care that the filet wasn't cooked properly she didn't care that her waiter was so disrespectful to her paying customer. my parents have been going here for over 30yrs ... menu hasnt changed one vowel. I have been going there since I can remember. I took my girlfriend there on our first date and we go there often. Any Italian will say their moms cooking is the best and I will have no argument that my mom is in fact the best cook ever. With that said Angelo's delicious sauces are the closest thing I have ever found to Mom's Sunday Sauce. Top notch. Its consistent, its homemade, its delicious. You can even find the Owner Angelo, who I believe is still living young in his late 80s early 90s, eating there every night around 8-830 I would say. I unfortunately can't judge the food, but this restaurant has incredibly rude owners. My husband and I just moved into town and wanted to try a local restaurant with two of our friends. My husband was recommended this place by someone he works with. We walk in and step up to the hostess desk. A women is standing there and just stares at us with a dirty look. I assumed she was just another guest waiting to be seated. We can see about 3 or 4 open tables in the restaurant, so I thought her frustration was because she wasn't being seated. However, after a minute of us standing there she finally says "can I help you" with the rudest tone. She stares at us like we are kids that don't belong here (this place was definitely a bit of an older crowd, but my friends and I are in our late 20's/early 30's...not High School or College kids). We ask her if we can sit for dinner for a party of 4. She practically laughs at us and says it will be more than an hour wait. We ask her if they take reservations,which they don't, and she tells us to come back another night. She was one of the most rudest people I have ever dealt with. Even if the food was critically acclaimed I would never step back into that restaurant! Lyndhurst has tons of nice italian restaurants, so I would recommend somewhere else that actually wants your business! read more

Angelo's wins best-in-class. My husband is a very picky Italian who usually only likes his mother's sauce but he says Angelo's sauce is "heavenly" and the homemade manicotti is better than his Aunt Silvia's (hard to beat!). Finally paid a visit to Angelo's after years of hearing about it from friends. I was surprised what a quick trip it was from Manhattan--and that's a wonderful thing, because we plan to come back often. The classic Southern Italian-American cuisine and mid-century vibe brought back memories of favorite restaurants of my Long Island childhood: a portrait of Angelo by the beautiful padded bar, gold-veined mirrors, photos of regulars and notable guests on the front wall, bottles thick with dripping candle wax lining another, ruby red floral carpeting, white tablecloths, attentive yet unobtrusive waiters in formal black and whites, and large portions of simple but extraordinarily delicious food. All this set to a soundtrack of Sinatra, Jerry Vale and Tony Bennett. It's old-school without the wear and tear. The place is so pristine, it's like stepping back in time to 1966. We enjoyed a big basket of hot, crusty Italian bread with our drinks, brought to us from the bar, while we considered our choices. There are no specials and there's nothing trendy or pretentious on the menu, which remains virtually unchanged in half a century. Diane, the daughter of the recently departed Angelo, made recommendations for us first-timers. We decided to order a big, crisp, fresh salad and several appetizers to share: killer meatballs, delicious "Shrimp with Sauce and Biscuit", delicate, hand-made manicotti, and classic clams oreganata. Tasting the first three, we realized with surprise that each had a different marinara sauce. And what sauces! Without our noticing it, our bread basket was kept filled--our waiter knew we'd need it to mop up every drop of sauce from our appetizers and the garlicky goodness from the outstanding Shrimp Scampi I ordered. I also tasted my friend's perfect fried calamari, and another's swoon-worthy veal specialty, both excellent. Our only regret was not having room for dessert, but with so many dishes yet to try, it may be several visits before we can exercise enough restraint to allow for that. read more

Finally went here for Valentines Day, and was very pleased. After driving by for years me and my fiancé decided to try it out. They do not take reservations, but we were able to get a table without a long wait. The place was pretty busy, maybe because it was a holiday, but I was enamoured by this resteraunts old school charm. The Decor was pretty bland, although the old fashioned bar and cash register was pretty cool. They had a women hanging up your coat as soon as you walked in which I thought was a charming touch. The appetizer of calamarie with medium sauce was delish, sauce was great... Not too spicy with just enough"kick." Our entree was the Angelo's scampi, yum!! And the manicotti was like silk. Yes "silk" is how I would describe this delicate,light, flavorful pasta dish. The service was great, the wine by the glass reasonably priced. The only downside in my opinion was that they did not offer fresh pepper or parm for the dishes, and olive oil would have been great to dip the bread in. Also the pricy scampi dish did not come with pasta, I'm sure I should have realized this when reading the menu, but the waiter did not inform me of this either... Anyway I def would go back since the food is fresh and good, and the manicotti will be on my mind until my next visit!!! Def check it out, it is a local gem! read more

I have been coming here for years with my family. I always insist on going back when I'm in town. Classic Italian food well prepared. The Shrimp is excellent, especially with sweet sauce and a side of linguini. The Veal Parm, Clams Oreganata, Meatballs, Rigatoni and Manigoti are standouts as well. This is my very first Yelp review, but this place is well worth it. My family has been coming here since it opened and it is absolutely amazing - by far the best Italian restaurant in the area. When you walk, you're welcomed by an amazing authentic ambiance that makes you feel like you're in the most authentic Italian restaurant and the friendliest staff that makes you feel at home. The menu is outstanding and super authentic - they only just started putting chicken on the menu. You get a complimentary basket of bread (which is by far the best bread I've ever had) and we always start out with a salad for the table. They give you oil and vinegar but I find that when you mix the salad with the red sauce it tastes best. The shrimp in sweet sauce is my favorite appetizer and I can't go there without getting it. They give you around 6 breaded shrimp in their amazing homemade red sauce with a biscuit. It's the best. We also get the homemade manicotti - made by Angelos wife (so authentic they won't let you wrap it up and take it home because they want you to eat it fresh). I always get the lobster tail as my entree which comes with two perfect sized lobster tails cooked to perfection in oil and breadcrumbs and also comes with butter and lemon. My father always gets the veal Milanese which is always breaded perfectly and tastes amazing. Its cooked so well it cuts like butter. They use the same sweet red sauce which is fantastic. I have had a bunch of other things from there and have never ever been disappointed. The staff is amazingly friendly and always checks in to make sure you have everything you need. They walk around and talk to customers like they're a guest in their home. They also only recently started accepting credit cards! All in all you can't go wrong. Great meal here! We visited on a Saturday night, where the staff made accommodations to comfortably fit our party of 6 adults and 2 babies. Food was very good- menu is relatively simple, but everyone at the table was happy with their meal. There is chicken parm on the menu, so everyone can calm down with the "NO CHICKEN!?!?!" reviews. I had the shrimp scampi and it was EXCELLENT. Despite the restaurant being packed, our waiter did not rush us and let us enjoy a leisurely meal. I loved the decor; the theme is old school with lots of dark wood. I would definitely return. The crowd was a little bit on the older side, but that doesn't impact my dining experience in any way. Prices are very reasonable for the portions, especially if you're used to eating out in NYC or Hoboken with any frequency. We spent about $50 per adult, but everyone had at least 1 drink. read more

Been coming here since I was a young boy and it only gets better with age like a fine wine. When I was a kid it used to be a stop on the way home from visiting relatives at the cemetery across the street or anytime I convinced my parents to take us to Franks baseball card shop. The waiters and hostess are all professional and do a great job. I recommend getting the clams oragenta as an appetizer, dinner salad to share with the table, and any rigatoni dish with ricotta and meatballs on the side. A true 10/10. read more

I'm Italian and the meatballs here are the only ones I'll eat!! Even my Italian grandmothers couldn't get me to eat theirs (God rest their souls). This place is just hands down great old school amazing Italian food. If you were born in Lyndhurst or Jersey City you know Angelo's. This was the place my parents went to on date night and all the guys from the club. This is the real deal. Up until a few months ago they still had the beer bottle candles, which I might add I miss very much. You have to know what to order and once you dine here trust me you will be back. Remember to that is cash only which I also love - so old school it's great. The shrimp and biscuit tastes just like years ago from Vincent's in Little Italy so delicious and a must if you want the real Angelo's deal. The veal with peppers is to die for and the home made manicotti is just like my Grandmother's (unfortunately you cannot order these to go - thank goodness or I would be traveling down to Lyndhurst even more than I do now). The meatballs and the clams oreganto are to die for!! You have to dip your bread right in the oil and breadcrumbs from the clams for a true taste of good old fashioned Italian. If you are looking for a place, not fancy but just down right old school delish you must try Angelo's. After 35 yrs in NJ and hearing this was among the greatest restaurants, I decided to finally go this past Friday with 2 friends who have loved the place for yrs but hadn't been there in about 3 yrs. Let's just say it was like listening to Jerry Vale sing at 75yo. It was either an off night or my expectations were thinking "Tony DiNapoli's" or Carmine's in NYC. I ordered Veal Milanese (my 1st-time test for restaurants) and it was average but even more disappointing, they brought out a house salad to put on top of it instead of the Arugula or Tri-Color salad with Balsamic I was expecting. The table was "mixed" on the Calamari...it was cooked enough for us but the other couple expected more tender. My friend thought the sauce/gravy was bitter...I said it was ok,,,better than many but not like the better (mentioned above). My friend's (side) meatball was delicious. They really didn't voice their opinions until yesterday when we got together and they were generally disappointed and we won't return. I'm sure everyone has their "staple" place to go and I could see a loyal customer base supporting this place....friendly atmosphere....good service. where are these other reviews coming from, the owners family or staff! nice room and bar but the food? scungilli was like old rubber, hard to find what you ordered under all that tomato sauce. Yes the shrimp dish is good but that's about it. Also when the waiter asked how everything was and told him scungilli wasn't good I thought he was going to have a heart attack. His response was, well everybody loves it, not sorry can we bring you something else. Go to this place maybe for a drink and shrimp dish at the bar and than go to a place with good food. Prices reasonable but portions pretty small also. Sorry Angelo's really wanted to like you because it's old school but can't mislead my fellow yelpers! read more
