First visit was a few summers back and we absolutely loved it. "I think we found our new favorite place to keep coming back to!" (But time can be slippery and it took a bit longer than expected for a follow-up visit.) I'm happy to report that first time was not a fluke and this place IS worthy of putting into steady rotation*. (* - if money's not an issue) I'm boring - both visits I went with the (homemade) pasta specials and they were incredible. The Mrs. is equally boring and got the branzino each time. (And loved it both times.) One kid tried the (gulp, $60) steak special and kept raving about it. (Well, he wasn't keen on the zucchini but what teen really digs that veg, right?) The other kid loves bolognese and was happy with their version. A lovely small and warm restaurant. Limited menu with a handful of specials. It's not cheap. (A wee bit over $50 a person and we didn't get appetizers or dessert and only had sparkling water.) BYOB. (Limited) street parking. The host/owner - you won't find a more inviting and personable figure who is clearly proud of what he's created. Is a part of me tempted to dock a few stars because the owner was happy to see one of my kids wearing an AC Milan jersey the day before they were set to clash with my team, AS Roma? Of course! I knew I would leave a review as soon as I stepped in. The people here were incredibly accommodating to my partner and I. We were riding our bikes in town and were hungry. Seeing that they had outdoor seating in the back of the restaurant we asked if there was somewhere we could place our bikes while we ate. We didn't have any bike locks for outside so they gracious offered a special spot of us to safely park them. The food and ambiance was excellent and the people so kind. The clams casino was just soggy bread crumbs . No clam taste at all. My husband ordered a veal dish. He does like veal thin but this was thinner then cold cut thin sliced ham. I ordered fettuccini bolognese. All it was ground beef with sauce. NO taste of ground pork. read more

We've been here a few times now and the consistency of the food is spot on. So delicious. I keep wanting to try places in town, so this was on my list. Driving by, you would never know this place existed. The storefront is very small. When you walk in, it's bigger than I had expected. For apps, we got the grilled calamari (amazing) in this red sauce, and my husband got the long hots. Service was top notch- always checking in on us. For dinner I got the steak which was good, but I regret not getting seafood because my husband got the black ink seafood dish and it looked like perfection. They supposedly have a outdoor area in the back, but we did not go there because it was too cold. Highly recommend this place if you're looking for good Italian. read more

We were in the mood for Italian food after a long day of baseball and after looking on my handy dandy Yelp app, we landed here. We opted to sit outdoors being that it was a nice night and the outdoor patio is so nice. Everything is nice and spread out and very comfortable. Service was bar none. Everyone was extremely helpful, knowledgeable and efficient. You felt right at home the entire time. It was a "specials" kind of night for us. For appetizers, we got the chicken meatballs in a pink sauce and the grilled Italian long hots, sausage and potatoes which were out of this world. For dinner, I also went with the special. I had the homemade fettuccine with grilled salmon, portobello mushrooms, sundried tomatoes, fresh mozz in a pink cream sauce. Completely phenomenal. My wife had the Ziti with broccoli rabe and Sausage. I was too full to even try it. My son had the Ziti with marinara which the gentleman helping us boasted that they have the best marinara in the area. For dessert, I got the Lemoncello cake which was completely on point, my wife got the chocolate mousse cake and our son had the chocolate Gelato. Only eaten here one other time. Neighborhood eats!! Restaurant is cozy and has approximately 12/13 tables. They also have backyard seating in the warmer weather which Is supposed to be very nice. This is a nice local spot for some tasty Italian food. The interior is attractive and comfortable. They have a very popular outdoor seating area in the back. I really recommend anything with the house made pasta. The pappardelle with shrimp and wild mushroom in a creamy Demi glaze is delicious. The spinach salad with pears is also a winner. The have great specials too. The food is slow to come out of the kitchen, so maybe eat the bread that they give you. Altogether, a solid neighborhood place. read more

The owner John, himself alone, is worth the visit. Super friendly and a blast to converse with all night. We chose to eat outside under a tent. Good choice on our part. Clean, spacious and not noisy. Let me save you the trouble of reading this entire review by cutting to the chase. This restaurant is simply awful. I ordered take out from here about a month ago and my guest and I barely ate anything we brought home. The amatriciana pasta was a disaster and the rest of the order was equally horrible. Take out can be hit-or-miss though, so tonight I decided to try dining there in person. Much to my surprise, it was even worse, in fact unbelievably so! My dinner guest and I were dumbfounded that a restaurant can operate so unprofessionally. The place itself is cozy, even charming, but a total disaster both in front of the house and in the kitchen. First, we ordered appetizers and the stuffed mushrooms, seafood salad and fennel salad took almost 45 minutes to arrive. The stuffed mushrooms were a pleasant surprise with a nice cream sauce and tasty sausage stuffing with a bit of a zing. The seafood and fennel salads were fine also. However, the fennel salad we barely touched, and the serve simply threw it out without asking if we would like to have it wrapped. When we finished with the appetizers, it took forever for the waiter to be found to take our main course orders which we decided to wait on. When he finally did arrive, he informed us that the kitchen was about to close. If that was the case, why was he nowhere to be found to take our entrée orders??? So finally, we ordered the ricotta gnocchi and the red snapper marechiara. The waiter took our orders then returned from the kitchen and informed us that the restaurant had run out of tomatoes and tomato sauce, and that we couldn't order anything with either! That eliminated ninety percent of the menu! Have you ever heard of Italian restaurant running out of tomatoes??? This was a first for both of us! How in the hell does an Italian restaurant run out of tomatoes and tomato sauce? Incompetent owner? Poor management? Incompetent chef? Apparently at Trattoria Via Veneto, All of the above! Trying to make the best of a bad situation, my girlfriend asked if she could have gnocchi with the same cream sauce that the stuffed mushrooms had been served with. The waiter checked with the kitchen and came back to inform us that they had run out of cream also. So, we requested the snapper with a white clam sauce since that does not require the tomatoes needed to make a marechiara sauce. The waiter took our orders only to return and tell us that they had run out of snapper. So, we requested the branzino and were informed that they had run out of that as well! Turned out all they had left was flounder, so just wanting to eat something and for this dining disaster to be over, we agreed. This took about a half hour to arrive. Where was the owner through all of this? He was just sitting at a table, enjoying a drink, not concerned in the least about his operation, through all of this. He is quite arrogant and thinks he is doing you a great favor by allowing you the honor of dining at his establishment. Make no mistake, starting with the attitude of the owner, this is a restaurant that could care less about your satisfaction as a customer. I grew up literally a half mile from this restaurant in Nutley and it is a shame that this establishment tries to pawn itself off a professionally run business. Don't waste your time and money dining at Trattoria Via Veneto, there are so many better options in the immediate vicinity. read more

This is truly a little hidden gem in Nutley. My family and I have passed this restaurant countless times and finally decided to give it a try. It's deceptively large on the inside with a large outdoor back area - looks like it would only seat a few tables from the street view but that's not the case. The food was excellent and the menu has a nice variety. They also serve the best focaccia that you will no doubt spoil your appetite with because it's that good.
