I am so glad that I got the recommendation to go to Angry Catfish. With extremely limited bike knowledge, it can be very overwhelming to find a proper fit or even a place to start. I met with Stephen and immediately felt at ease and supported in trying to make the best decision to fit my budget. We went to the fitting area (that's what I'm calling it), where we found my inseam and stand over height. I hopped up on the stationary cycle to make sure the saddle height was adjusted correctly. After getting all the technical things down, we found a model in store that seemed to match what I was needing. I haven't ridden a bike since middle school so I was a little nervous. We grabbed a helmet and after a pep talk and some instruction, I got on and gave it my best go up and down the dead end street. Sold. Stephen knocked the price down to what it was showing on the retail site saving me about $150 on the bike, and he also discounted my helmet and bottle cage, throwing in a water bottle for free. My experience here couldn't have been better and I am so happy with my purchase! read more

So there I was, 40 miles into what was supposed to be a century (100 mile) ride when bam, a large metal shard made a gash in my tire and inner-tube so large that no patch kit could possibly hope to fix it, dashing my hopes of completing my ride. What's worse, I had a big ride to Stillwater planned for the next day with my family. What to do? Well, Angry Catfish came to the rescue in a big way! Not only did they actually have the parts in stock that I needed (and they were the only ones in the Metro that I could find them at), BUT they also squeezed me in last minute and got my bike back into tip-top shape in less than 20 minutes! I may not have been able to finish my whole ride, but I still had time for some of it, and more importantly, I was still able to ride to Stillwater the next day. I'm super grateful for their knowledgable, friendly, and VERY FAST service! read more

Helpful staff...they walked me through some of my light options for city riding and what they do not have they can often order.

I had a warranty issue with the FSA cranks on my Canyon gravel bike. As Canyon is DTC, they said I should bring it to a local shop and they'd work with them on the swap. FSA paid Angry Catfish for the labor of the swap. Angry Catfish, in turn, charged me $50 for handling it. I wasn't aware of that going in and it felt like an awfully big fee for a small amount of trouble, especially given they were reimbursed for the labor by FSA. It's a very cool shop but that was a very uncool experience. I'll take my business elsewhere from now on. read more

Haven't really had a road bike since my chrome Scwhinn at UC Davis in 1999. But after a weekend of biking in Oregon last weekend, I got the bug back.  Stephen at Angry Catfish was absolutely fabulous. I did some cursory Internet research before calling him, at which point I got a very educational 10-minute earful. (Dude knows how to handle a phone up.) Within half an hour of arrival to Angry Catfish (even with covid precautions), I was on a test ride. I rode another bike after the All City Zig Zag just to be sure I was ready to drop $4k. I had a great experience riding and put my card down---and then I went home and obsessively researched. (Yes, I know that's backwards.) Should I have gotten a carbon one? For this kind of money should I get something else? Should I wait? Should I fly to Oregon or Colorado and have some artisan measure me up for a custom machine made of unobtanium? (Nah. I'm a regular size, and I can always go completely insane later.) What I found out was that everything Stephen had said was true and met my needs.  Today, I got a very detailed, thoughtful delivery by Stephen and Eric, and every detail I'd mentioned Saturday was dialed in and perfectly installed before I got there. They made sure the GPS talked to my phone, that the seat was exactly the right height, and that all my flat-tire stuff was packed. Then, they fixed my kid's bike while I was standing there.  I can be hard on merchants. My mom is a Karen. A dealer messed up the delivery of my SUV so badly a few years ago a guy got fired over it. (No, I did not ask for that...) What I'm saying is that it's really a great experience to walk in fat, dumb, and happy and leave informed and content.  Oh, and I got a ton of compliments on my bike today. I really enjoyed my visit to Angry Catfish! Angry Catfish is a quirky, but charming cafe and bike shop combo. It has a very odd interior, but it feels warm and inviting. There is a variety of seating (couches, tables, etc) to serve anyone's needs. The menu is a little different than the average cafe, but I enjoyed my molasses latte nonetheless. There was only one barista, but they were very efficient and friendly. The coffee was delicious, but I loved the vibe of the cafe even more. It seemed very laid back and welcoming, and it was a perfect place to catch up with a friend! They offer the standard assortment of classic drinks and some specialties of their own. The Cortado I ordered was very well prepared and was very tasty. My usual milk is non-fat, which they don't carry. Instead I had it with regular milk. Almond was the other available option. Along with coffees they have a case with pastries, a selection of chocolates and confections, and an isle of standard cycling snacks like Honey Stingers. read more

What a delightful surprise! My husband and I flew up to Minneapolis to pack some of the cast offs his parents no longer want as they downsize, and we were looking for a place to get new tires on a bike that hadn't been ridden in at least a decade. A lot of places we called weren't even sure they'd have the parts for our old John Deere bike, but these guys didn't even blink. Not only did they have the parts, but on an exceptionally busy weekend, they managed to get it completely done in a couple of hours. To top it off, we grabbed a coffee from the incredibly competent, knowledgeable, and truly delightful baristas. They made gorgeous shots of espresso for us, so much so that we had to go back for a second cup later. Great selection of locally roasted coffees. They were doing pourovers for a group of people, and I wish I lived closer to work my way through the many varieties. Go for great service, no matter which side of the store! read more

This little coffee shop is just the best. Right around the corner from A Baker's Wife (which has the best breakfast sweets!). I love biking to Angry Catfish in the summer, ordering a coffee and popping next door to grab a danish or American Tea cake while my latte is being made, then coming back and enjoying the ambiance. All the decor is made of bike parts, and they sell bike accessories and bikes as well. Even if you aren't a hardcore biker, it's fun to look at the merchandise! There are plenty of tables to spread out, so it's a good space for groups of 2-4 people. I love their lattes - my fiancé likes their Cabin Fever since it has an ungodly amount of espresso in it (4 shots I think??). I like the Lavender Orange latte. I brought my own Kleen Kanteen for a dark roast. A little bitter for my taste, but everyone likes their coffee different. The surprising part to me was cost... $4. Best coffee and espresso in town!! Very smooth and tasty. A rotating selection of coffees and espressos and teas. I'm sensitive to the acidity in coffee and usually go with espresso drinks. All of the lattes and cappuccinos I have tried have been perfect. I haven't had a better espresso in all the Twin Cities. I tried a "fancy" tea for the first time today and thoroughly enjoyed it as well. The atmosphere is very open, airy, and bright with ample seating inside and out. The bike side doesn't get too loud or distracting if you're doing work inside. The music is soft enough and calm enough that it's not distracting. There are always seats available. I suggest grabbing an English tea cake at A Baker's Wife next door and enjoying your espresso here. Also it's a quick walk to Lake Nokomis. You can't get better than Angry Catfish. read more

Angry Catfish's hyper-caffeinated coffee is still in my bloodstream. What a great coffee shop! And that's not just the caffeine talking. I'm by no means a fixed gear-head or a bike expert, but I usually adore anything bike-related. Cycles surround the expansive seating area (not too many seats, but lots of room) and there's a space set aside for the bike mechanics too. It's a good place to be productive. I ordered an iced coffee and whoa. Just whoa. That coffee was so strong it could have lifted one of those Bianchi bikes right off its rack. They use Intelligentsia Coffee, which is all the rage right now. And those baristas brew it like pros. The only drawback is that there is no food available for when I forget breakfast, like I did today (explains the coffee-jitters). I'm not much of a pastry person or a nutri-protein-power-bar kind of person, so it would be even cooler if I could get a sandwich or some yogurt or something. Coffee is the Bluetooth of retail shops. Everything is better with Bluetooth, once said Sheldon of the Big Bang Theory. It's now some time that retail shop owners have realized every store is a better place if it serves coffee. It began with bookstores and department stores, then garden centers and nurseries, car washes, and now bike stores. I am quite sure we'll soon see coffee bars in more unexpected and surprising places. Those who are able to distinguish themselves in the competition would win big. Angry Catfish has successfully distinguished itself from others stepping into the sandbox by combining two trendy and popular concepts: quality high-end bikes and third-wave coffee. I have no clue about high-end bikes. But I enjoyed looking at them while I was at the store waiting for my car to get fixed at the car repair shop across the street. I ordered an Iced Latte, which was perfect and I worked on my laptop. The Iced Latte was with no doubt one of the best I've tasted. The place is comfortable. Wi-fi was slow, though. In addition to the high chairs by the window, there are three relatively large tables and a couple of armchairs. The place is very children friendly. Dogs are welcomed inside the shop. They also sale art work and jewelry made out of recycled bike parts. read more

Thank you Angry Catfish. Thank you so much! I recently moved to the TC area, and I've been active in my quest for a really good cuppa coffee. New York, has spoilt me so. I've found them: Black Sheep, Kopplins and now - Angry Catfish. It's hard for me to go to the first two because it requires a special trip to St. Paul which takes about 20 minutes. And then comes Angry Catfish! As soon as you walk in, you'll be greeted with such beautiful open spaces, that I've now come to expect in Minneapolis. The aromas of fresh coffee and sometimes, bike grease will flood the air. The barista is really friendly, sometimes as I sit just sipping my cappuccino, I tune in and out of his conversations with which he talks about roasting techniques, the type of coffee used, etc. He knows his stuff, and it shows, the coffee here is beautiful. The atmosphere of Angry Catfish is for people who want to come in, take a breather, enjoy a cuppa, and unwind a bit not rush in and rush out. And I love that about angry catfish! Also, they play the Current, so get excited for great music while you are enjoying some pastries from A Bakers Wife, or browsing their stellar bike selection. I got a large chai tea, that was quite tasty, along with a croissant and peanut butter cookie. The pastries were fantastic. Let me tell you, that croissant was out of this world. I've gotta say it's in my top 3 croissants, and i've spent serious time in France if that's saying anything. I can't wait to go check out A Baker's Wife and treat myself to more sweets. Also, they use Intelligentsia coffee, which I can't wait to taste that next time i'm back! Ah Angry Catfish! Your coffee never disappoints. Seriously, I got a mocha this time around and it was literally PERFECT! It was a great blend of espresso taste + chocolate + sweet. None overpowering, all working together to make the amazingly pleasant drink. The chai is also a delightful treat! I'm picky about my chai, but they definitely satisfy when I'm in the mood for something different than coffee. The only catch with this place is the staff. I will say this, my most recent trip, they were super nice and friendly. However, it hasn't always been that way. I used to go 2-3 times a week before class and was treated as if I were someone at a Starbucks drive-thru window. Really, no questions like "Hey, how's your day?" Maybe I'm a little old fashion, but I like friendly baristas. This whole rise of the specialty coffee makes me worried that people will let go of service standards. I see there's a house for sale down the street from Angry Catfish. I would like to buy it and move in and stop in every day for coffee and never move away! I appreciate that they offer regular drip coffee for a quick cup, or will syphon brew it for you. This makes getting coffee on the run easy, but allows a better option for those willing to stick around. They seem to offer a few different bean selections of Intelligentsia coffee which are "reasonably" priced (if interested, see my review of Kopplins for what I consider reasonable). I would normally dock this place one-star for lack of seating, but I have never been in there and not found a place to sit. I will always come to this place for a cup whenever I'm in the neighborhood. A Baker's Wife next door is an added bonus. read more

The attitude is evident the moment you walk in. No one seemed interested that a customer walked in. I went there to buy a very expensive Moots bicycle. I live in the Twin Cities, but I had a refundable down payment on a Moots at a shop in Madison. I would rather have bought locally, so I went to Angry Cat because they are a Moots dealer. After a while, I was able to get someone's attention. I asked if I could buy a $11,500 bike that was on display. I was told "no". Just "no". It was a display model and they wouldn't sell it. Not "can I order this for you?", just "no". Not, "Do you want to try it out?", just "no". So I bought the bike in Madison and I couldn't be happier with the service and attitude at that bike shop. read more

On Coffee: If you have time, go with the siphon brew method and take the barista's recommendation on one of their rotating selection of beans. You can't beat it! Plus the fact that they brew Intelligentsia puts them in my top two coffeeshops in the Twin Cities! As for Bikes: I've had a road bike and 3 classic bikes, we've rescued, tuned up here so far and they are all riding great! This is quite the fun little spot with an eclectic mix of caffeine and bikes! I must say it's the first time I've seen these two together, but here it really works. The coffee shop is where we did the majority of our chillaxing. My little guy had a hot chocolate which he felt was up to par and I had a new beverage I hadn't tried in some time - a smoked sea salt mocha. The drink was excellent! Just enough smoke to keep your mouth guessing a bit but matched well with the sweetness of the chocolate and the bitterness of the espresso. A well thought out drink indeed. Plenty of seating including some bar stools, a number of couches and plush chairs, plus standard seating. Free wifi and plenty of writers making sure others see it. Fun spot and worth checking out. read more

Espresso done right. I've had a couple of meh's, but the vast majority have been heavenly. Nice to find a shop that truly cares about serving quality espresso. The cookies from next door, The Baker's Wife, are great. Huge and low priced. Though I'd like to see them step it up and offer goods from Rustica Bakery like Kopplin's does. They could use a lot more seating. You either have to sit on bar stools or one of two couches that face each other. Not much privacy. Hope they can get a lot more people through the door. Never seen more than 2 other people there. Coffee shops come and go. This is one of the few that needs to stay. Great latte art! But I'd rather drink espresso any day. Update: 6 fucking stars.
