I had our new Kent recumbent Trikes picked up to check all connections due to a review I read. They found a lot just hand tight. The Trikes were without accessories so I had Tonka Cycle order rear lights, front reflectors, bottle holders, rear view mirrors, phone holders, a light attachable to my helmet for night biking, a bag with tools in case of flat tires, and a tire pressure pump. We had to start from scratch since we hadn't biked for 20 years.They did an awesome job and a very reasonable price for all of this. I would highly recommend them! read more

I have had very bad luck with bikes in the past so I came into this experience with extreme skepticism. I came here as a result of my fellow Yelpers reviews. First I viewed their options online whoch was setup very well. One down fall is I somehow ended up on a page listing previous rental bikes for sale and when I brought this up at the store, that list is from last fall and they currently do not have any for sale. At the store I shared with the salesman which one I was looking at and he brought me to that area and showed me the size options that he thought I might be fit for. He then took me outside where i was able to test ride the bike in their parking lot which was decent sized to give you a good feel for the bike. I shared my previous experience of bikes breaking on me and he was able to assure me that the bike I selected would match the tyoe of riding I had in mind as well as their shop would check over everything if I ever feel like something is not working as it should be. Over all it was a great experience and I am now a bike owner once again! read more

Tonka Cycle had an event today to test drive electric bikes. To do so you filled out paperwork (release of liability) So, with paperwork in hand I'm waiting to go for a test drive. Jason, the manager was standing there and this woman slides in and starts talking with him and he is going and asks if she wants to go for a test drive. What the hell am I? I have gotten a couple of bikes from this place and dealt with Jason everytime. I was seriously considering purchasing one of the electric bikes, but I just ripped up the paperwork and left. I have always received great service and respect when I shop at Erik's Bike Shop and I will be heading over there to purchase my next bike. They are honest with me and tell me the pros and cons so that I can make an informed decision. read more

We don't live in Hopkins anymore but we still drive 30 minutes, past several other bike and ski shops, to do business with these guys. It's not every place you go to that the staff seems to really enjoy what they're doing. That makes a big difference at this friendly shop. We've purchased a couple different pair of cross country skis and had a variety of work done on our bikes here and it's always been a good experience. read more

Had my bikes tuned up several times, sometimes needing brake or shifter cables replaced. Also had a group set replaced on one bike successfully. Was looking to purchase a giant explore E+ 2022 recently. When my first choice for a store was out of stock in the size I needed, I discovered this location not only had the bike I was looking for, but was offering several hundred dollars below the MSRP! On finding this, I quickly went down, gave the bike a test ride, and decide to buy it that very same day. Staff was friendly and very helpful to answer my questions. The reason for the four-star as supposed to five, in the weeks following purchase, I discovered a few issues such as creaking a handle bar, and issues with the chain staying on the highest gear. Since it was still under warranty, I took it back and they looked it over finding several items needed to be corrected from assembly. Fortunately, they honored the warranty to the letter, and after a few rounds of repairs and test rides in a nearby neighborhood, I can now say my bike is in full and full and functional order. Just took a ride around my hometown, wouldn't know it ever had a problem at this point. Definitely recommend for friendliness of staff, the pricing, and honoring of the warranty. read more

I'd give zero stars if I could. We brought my mountain bike in because the front shock wouldn't hold air. We had them do a bunch of other things as well, like tubeless tires, new breaks, etc. Everything cost $600+. After I picked it up, we went to Cuyuna to ride, and the front shock still didn't hold air. I returned to Tonka Cycle and Ski and they said they had no record of us ever saying the front shock didn't hold air (again, this was the MAIN reason we brought the bike in!). They said they are not authorized to work on Fox shocks, so the only option to fix it was to send it in to Fox for $300 and it would take 3+ weeks. I was beyond frustrated since bike season was just starting; had they told me that when we brought it in, I would have sent it to Fox a month earlier and skipped all the other stuff for now. Plus they refused to even refund the $35 "tune up" of the front shock, so we said, "No thanks, we'll fix/replace it elsewhere," which we did. Now, two years later, I'm upgrading my wheels, and found out that they also never made my tires tubeless like we asked! They are either a scam shop or had a bonehead working the counter and a grumpy manager that wouldn't refund a measly $35 for their mistake. Either way, I'll never go back. read more

My fiancée recently purchased a beautiful 2012 Jamis Satellite Sport road bike from Tonka Cycle & Ski. We visited this shop three different times during our bike hunt, since we were considering all available avenues for purchase: Craigslist, Nashbar.com, eBay, big box stores like Dick's Sporting Goods, and several other shops in the Twin Cities - small ones and multiple-location stores. So we had put in a good 10-15 hours of research and searching for bikes. When it comes to buying a bike, you encounter a very wide range of prices. Here is what we found: 1) older used bikes on Craigslist (usually circa 1970s-1980s) -- priced anywhere from $150 - $250. These are usually tuned up and may have some upgraded/replaced components, but they don't ride nearly as smoothly as new bikes. 2) brand-spanking new bikes (current-year model) from places like Erik's or Penn Cycle, often priced at $700 and up. 3) better deals for new bikes online at Nashbar, but you're buying blind, unsure of how the bike will fit and feel to ride. 4) buying from a big box store like Dick's or Target, where you can buy a new bike for $250-$350 (or less), but where the components are likely not great quality. I question how long a bike like this would even last. In the end, Tonka was our best option, mostly because they were offering 15% off 2012 models (i.e. last year's model). We think this was a great way to go. My fiancee's Jamis bike ended up costing $550. While that's a hefty investment, we believe this is a bike that will last 10 years and beyond (given proper maintenance). The team at Tonka Cycle was knowledgable, talkative, helpful, and patient. They had Krista try out multiple bikes, and they were not remotely pushy for a sale. In fact, we ended up visiting three times, and each time the staff was great. We also checked out their big garage sale event (took place in July). They had well over a 100 used bikes for sale (try to get there early, since many of the best buys are snatched up immediately upon opening). All in all, I heartily endorse Tonka Cycle & Ski. read more

All the great reviews about this shop is on the money. I recently learned how to ride a bike as an adult. Needless to say I was overwhelmed at finding the right bike for myself. Thanks to the great service I had I've narrowed it down to 2 bikes. I wished I got his name. He was great, wasn't pushy on sales, and really helped me feel comfortable testing out various bikes. He gave me good tips on what I should look for when searching and got me really excited for when I can start biking next summer. As an avid cyclist, I've seen my fair shop of bike shops from Maine to Oregon and all throughout Minnesota. I can honestly say the folks at Tonka are 100% invested in your riding experience. The staff practice what they preach and are true experts. What I really love about this shop is whether you're a rookie or racing year-round, they take their time, treat you with respect, and are incredibly fair with their pricing. As you'll see from the percentage of reviews I have, I like bike shops. And when it comes to calling one, "my shop," that's really akin to calling whatever the Biebs puts out, "my jam." And I think this is now "my shop." We rented some full suspension mountain bikes for the weekend, turned an old Trek mountain bike (1993 vintage) into a single speed and browsed for about an hour. These guys are fantastic-great advice, super patient, outstanding selection of bikes/clothing/accessories, fair prices (and great sale prices), and an overall killer vibe. I worked with both Tyler and Steve and was really impressed. Definitely consider these guys when looking for new gear and repairs, way better than the chain stores-better pricing, service, and knowledge a plenty. read more

I didn't say anything but after 45 minutes without any service at all I walked out with my bike. I ordered and paid for sealant from their online store (which I learned they didn't have in stock) and they did everything they could to get me to accept the stuff they had laying around which I didn't want. These folks first came to our attention in their old location because of their friendly and knowledgeable staff and great selection of winter gear. However, they also have a somewhat small but high quality selection of bikes and great bike service staff. I ended up finding the perfect discounted 2012 Giant Defy 2 on closeout in spring 2013, and have never regretted the purchase. Their staff swapped a bunch of gear between my old bike and my new Giant one for next to nothing and upgraded the seat post to composite. Unfortunately their store is 16 miles from our home, so routine service is just not a reasonable option. However for specialized service, like upgrading my brakes, I go there for great prices, service and advice. To wit, on 6/25/15 I had a set of Shimano 105 brakes installed, with new brake cables, for less than then the cost of the brakes alone on Amazon. Stopping power is 3x previous brakes, partly because the original brakes were worn out and partly because braking was one of the few weak spots of the 2012 Defy 2. Jason and his team go the extra mile to keep customers coming back. I highly recommend this shop, especially for bike service. read more

I first started going to this bike shop at their old location and fell in love! The staff are all knowledgeable and enjoy biking themselves. They take the time to teach you about the best way to maintain your bike and are not just looking for a quick sale. I've tried other bike shops around the cities and have not found the level of customer service that I have found here.
