My wife and I came here to check out their bikes and honestly fell in love with the place. Not only is it a great coffee shop, in a great location being directly within Union Depot, but they have a great selection of new and re-built bikes. They were more than willing to help fit us and let us try out a few bikes from their selection. The person helping us was extremely friendly and happy to help out with all of our questions. They got busy a couple times where they had to step away but no worries there, that's not a bad thing in my eyes, businesses have to be good at juggling people and helping everyone out. We ended up buying a bike for my wife, They were very accommodating and my wife is still in love with it and riding it super frequently. Great bicycles, fair prices, friendly knowledgeable staff, and a coffee shop too! Easily my favorite bike shop in St. Paul. I've purchased everything from parts to a full build bicycle. They also offer complete repair service. Love the bikes that they have for sale. Everything from gravel to road, bmx to mountain, and vintage/classics as well. Nothing brand specific with plenty of variety. This shop is located inside of the Union Depot. So parking is either street parking or a parking garage. I've been with Lowertown now for at least 10 years or more!Crystal and crew is amazing!! Crystal and crew donated a bike to me 5 yrs a ago! A schwinn single speed with a peddle brake. It was grey,black,white,and red. The paint job was misted together!Awesome,awesome bike!! When I received the bike I felt joy that I had not felt in along time,if at all! I rode it with joy! Unfortunately some body Busted the lock of off it while I was working at CHS FIELD In broadday!!! I had one,maybe 2 bikes after that. I purchased a Smokey Blue KHS URBAN SOUL SINGLE SPEED BIKE! Took my bike to get a flat fixed, the woman working changed my seat without asking. Went to pick it up and mentioned it was a bit too tall and she gave me an entire demonstration of how to "correctly" stand and kick off staring it was the perfect length for my "long legs" (I'm 5'4). She then told me if it didn't work out and ended up being too tall after trying it out that I could bring it back to have the seat pipe cut shorter for free. Called and asked to make sure I could bring my bike in to have the seat cut and mentioned the whole story and was told by a woman on the phone that it'd be a quick and free process. Brought the bike back and the man working had an attitude and tried but couldn't get the seat out, he said I would have to leave the bike there to have it fixed - so not quick. Instead, got my wife to remove the seat and bring it back in to finally be cut and at the end of all this they tried to charge $8 in labor fee.........after confirming multiple times it would be free -shady business practices and rude employees. Take your business somewhere else. *** edit: add classist to the list - after reading the stores response to my review apparently my bike being bought at a second hand store was necessary information to defend their terrible customer service. SAD. And btw you did say FREE several times. Just because you have an attitude doesn't make you correct. We paid $80 for a flat fix - you're overpriced and elitist. I regularly come to St. Paul on business and recently bought a bike that needed to be shipped home. When i called LBS, Crystal offered to rent their hard case for transit. The capable LBS team packed it one day and i picked it up the next - well worth the modest expense. It went on my flight as oversized baggage at no additional cost. I'm so happy that I found LBS for my local cycling needs and won't need to go anywhere else. Please open a store in Chicago! read more

Charged for services that weren't requested and when returning to get service which was promised to be free of charge for labor they didn't complete previously they tried to charge for labor again. They also just sit in the back and ignore customers that are waiting. Take your business somewhere else. read more

Very happy with this bike shop which mostly I visit for once or twice a year I catch a nail and need a tube change. The last experience was great with such quick service on a Saturday and charged me less than $12, which is ridiculously cheap compared to other brick-and-mortar shops in St Paul. read more

Did you know this is a non-profit? Amongst all the good stuff that you'll find at this shop, I was most surprised by that. Crystal is really kind and extremely knowledgeable. I brought my mom's bike in and within a few days she got the tires in shape and fixed the brakes. She also added a water bottle fixture on the fly. LOVE lowertown bike shop. Been going here on and off for a couple years now. I've had them do seasonal tune ups and the occasional repair on my bike (Specialized road bike) and always been very happy with them. They also have always taken the time to answer my questions, and explain things to me. (My cycling maintenance knowledge is sometimes uneven) Recently, I had them build me a custom bike for the winter. It was a great experience. They were also very non-weird about things like "i have a budget", asking right off what I wanted to spend and working with me to prioritize where that money was spent. what kind of biking I expected to use it for, etc. It's a great little bike that I've been very much enjoying riding on my commute. Particularly love the receipts, which sounds like a weird thing to love, but it includes notes about the service, what was replaced, how much each line item cost, etc. Really great when I can't remember what was replaced/fixed/etc the next time I run into some issue or need to replace something. With a build, it includes every part and the name/etc. This place is *mostly* focused on services rather than retail, but there is a decent retail selection. When you need a new tail light or bottle cages, they've got you covered. Stock is mostly solid, reliable brands and they've got the $ options and the $$ options. If you want something fancier, they'd love to order it for you, or recommend another location in the cities where you can check it out in person. Also, a real highlight of the store for me is MERV, a really lovely dog. read more

For the second time, the mechanics at Lowertown Bike Shop have decided to do services to my bike that I had not authorized or given my ok to do. I went in asking for my grips to be replaced and service to be done to my chain and lock ring. These are the repairs I felt prepared to pay for at the time. But without consulting me first, they replaced brake pads and a brake line, charging me far more than I was expecting. This is poor and dishonest business, and I will not be going here again. read more

Incredible!!! I dropped off my filthy out of tune bike on a Tuesday. What I picked up a week later was nearly the same bike I bought brand new two years earlier. The workers that work there are really nice, and friendly. When I went inside the building I was like wow, this is a big place and right in front of me is the little bike store. It was small and very cozy inside, for me it was hard to find but once I used the elevator map it helped. I would recommend this to any new comers. read more

Came here frustrated and desperate to attach a basket. They could have charged me a fortune and I probably would have paid it. To my surprise, they charged me an unbelievably reasonable price and my bike was ready the next day! Staff was incredibly friendly too, and seemed very knowledgeable in bikes. They earned themselves a customer, and I'm now considering them my go to bike shop. I will definitely be back for a tune up in the fall, as well as any other bike service gear, or equipment. They charged me for work I did not request, discuss or want. When I asked for them to remove those charges, I was yelled at by Jeremy. After a childish argument, I asked for them to remove the parts they installed, throw my disassembled bike in a box so that we could go our separate ways. Jeremy refused, and they still have my bike. If this shop was a part of the BBB I would file a formal complaint. It appears as though they will do whatever extra work they can to meet the maximum agreed budget, regardless of what the customer actually wants. If anyone decides to use this shop, please get everything in writing up front. read more

Due to a misunderstanding that was mostly my own fault, my vintage bike was renewed with parts that were an unattractive color match to the paint and with each other. When Crystal (the manager) learned I was unhappy with the end result, she offered to switch out the seat, bar tape, and tires to all black. They actually charge over three dollars just to put air in your tires. We went to buy new tires for our bike and paid a few extra dollars for instillation. After viewing the receipt, I noticed they charged over three dollars for air. Simply disrespectful. Go to any other bike repair shop, plenty around. read more

This is my first EVER review I have posted online. Little background I've been a salesman for over 10 years and all good salespeople LOVE to be sold. With everything going right now with Covina-19 I decided I need to buy a bike to live a healthier lifestyle while all the gyms are closed. I haven't purchased a bike since a teenager so I was expecting to pay $200 for a bike. Boy was I wrong! I called around to a couple bike shops and was lucky enough to have CRYSTAL answer the phone . Off the bat she was warm welcoming and inviting. I stopped in 2 weeks ago to look around and when I tell you her product knowledge and passion for biking was through the roof! I didn't buy the first day cause I needed to think about it and do some research. She helped me realize that this was an investment into my health and long term would save me money due to money saving (transportation back and fourth to work) I pulled the trigger today and I'm super happy with my investment! Crystal is amazing I will not spend my money with anyone else other than her when it comes to bikes. I messed up my gears because I'm an idiot. In a day they fixed not only my chain but also a brake misalignment I'd been too lazy to adjust. $16 well spent, as it meant I didn't have to try and do it myself in my wasp-filled garage. When it's needed, I plan to take my bike to them for a tuneup - they provide accurate time frames for repair and are great in terms of pricing and information. read more

They sized me up for bikes for as long as i needed to know i was getting the right bike. They gave me a fair price on my trade in and the bike that i bought was a good deal for my budget. I was referred to this bike shop because they get free bikes and then rehab them and sell them. My daughter picked out a bike we were quoted a price for this bike and they told us what they were going to do to the bike. We waited 2 weeks went to pick it up and the original seat that my daughter fell in love with was removed and replaced with a used black old seat. We asked the owner where the seat was when we put money on this bike and he stated that they were not going to make any money off of the dollar amount that they charged me to they took it off. The owner stated he replaced it with a different seat because the condition of the seat that was originally on the bike was worth a 100.00. I told him that that was not the agreement that they gave us and they stated that they were not going to put the original seat back on the bike. This bike shop has the WORST customer service ever. The owners wife called me 2 times to let me know that the bike was ready for pick up and never said that they switched out the original seat, I guess that they just thought we would never notice. Their communication with their customers is terrible. I told them that I was not taking the bike and asked for a refund. They never apologized or tried to make us happy. They get these bikes for FREE and then try and ask 250.00 per bike and up and than the owner has the nerve to say that they are a non profit company and that they had a lot of over head. Than do not quote a price and than change the price after you have paid 1/2 of the bike.. STAY AWAY AND DO NOT PURCHASE A BIKE FROM THEM!!! read more
