Only after he had left the table did I think, was that an extra charge? By then the menu was gone so I couldn't even check. The waiter was quite annoyed when I asked that the charge be removed. He did remove it. All they need to say is that the egg is an extra charge. I just didn't like the restaurant scam. It seems disingenuous. I had an incredible bowl of ramen at this spot! From the moment I walked in, your struck by the cozy and inviting atmosphere. The dimly lit space, with traditional Japanese decorations, it was super cute. what truly impressed me was the freshness of the ingredients. Our server advised us on some specials and I selected the short rib ramen. It was absolutely delicious, my partner was jealous of my selection lol. I was a little surprised when we got the check and it was $25. I thought it would be around the same price as on the menu, but considering the quality of the ingredients and the care that probably went into crafting each bowl I was willing to overlook the cost. Went here on a Friday night at 6 pm. So very lucky we got there when we did. Because we willingly took the bar area to sit and eat. After we sat, everyone behind us had an hour wait. The indoor space was small and spaced out I'm assuming due to covid-19 measures. There were only 4 tables in the establishment. They took our temperature and hand sanitizers available. All staff wore masks and patrons were required to do the same. Service was timely and friendly. Ordered pork buns for appetizer and spicy miso ramen and chef special ramen. Pork buns was delicious. Spicy miso was good.... Just not spicy enough ...for me. I requested red pepper chili flakes or Sriracha. Ani Ramen is one of my favorite ramen spots in NJ. I absolutely adore their ramen bowls!! My favorite go-to ramen is the Spicy Miso Ramen with a soft boiled egg. The broth is slightly creamy and full of flavor. Their noodles are kind of flat, but also round. They are chewy and packed with flavor when in the broth. The Porkbelly in the ramen is so soft, it melts right into your mouth. We also enjoy their wings and baos. The baos are so fluffy and the meats or shrimp in the inside is delicious. I have been going to this location for several years, however I think I'm done with Ani Ramen in general. First, the prices. They have steadily increased and certain things are absurd. Want an egg in your ramen? That will be $2.50. Bottom line, it's becoming a bit much to blow nearly $100 on edamame, one appetizer, and ramen for two people. Second, the service and general vibe. I went to this location in Fall of 2022. There were plenty of open tables. The host said we could be seated right away, but then asked for my phone number. I declined, but was told it was mandatory. When I politely pressed back, the manager came up and told me this was required due for contact tracing. Okay... I'm not a covidiot, so I gave my number. As we approached the holidays, I started receiving spam text messages from Ani Ramen about holiday ramen gifts. This is exactly why I didn't want to give my number. I was at the Cranford location last month with a party of 6. The restaurant was not overwhelmingly crowded, however we were waiting for over 45 minutes for our food to arrive. We were given some discount for the wait, but I'm not trying to get discounts, I'm trying to have a nice meal served on a reasonable time table. Last night I was back in the Montclair location. First, after being seated, my partner and I noticed one of the waitstaff kind of meandering around without any real pep in his step. Then, he walked by and was loudly complaining in front of customers that a patron that had just left tipped him $0 on a $100 bill. Look, I get it, that's not ideal, and maybe it wasn't warranted, but why do the other customers need to hear his mini-tantrum on the topic? It lacks class. Once again, we were waiting around 45 minutes for our ramen to arrive, and we were milliseconds from bailing out and heading to PastaRamen across the street when our mains arrived. Looking around the room we could sense that other tables were in a similar boat based on annoyed looks and glances towards the kitchen. The table next to us asked the waiter who previously had the tantrum what was going on with their order. They politely stated that they had been waiting a while. The waiter sarcastically stated "sounds about right" and walked off towards the kitchen. The icing on the cake is the 5% "convenience fee" that is added to your bill. It's really insult to injury because nothing is convenient or pleasant about Ani Ramen these days. I had inquired about this on past visits and asked if it still applied if I paid cash and was told yes. What are we paying for here? Are you not fleecing us enough with your $2.50 an egg fee? Another thing, what happened to the Newark location that you were going on and on about? It sounded very exciting that it was going to be the headquarters, and now that initiative is gone without a trace. Bottom line, Ani Ramen has gotten too big for its britches. Gone are the days of providing a great meal and a good experience. Now it's all about nickel and diming patrons while providing an unwelcoming subpar experience. They are on a tear opening new locations where you're sure to get the same treatment. How long until it implodes? EDIT - UPDATE: Joke's on me. PastaRamen is affiliated with Ani Ramen. At least I can say that they seem to have much more professional waitstaff and reasonable wait times for your food. They also don't ding you an extra $2.50 for a cold egg. That being said, it's hype city over there as well. If having the chef personally come to your table and hand shave "5 grams of truffle" on to your special ramen at over $100 per plate, then PastaRamen is for you! read more

I think it's too dark in there, especially for ramen where you might have splashes and spills. Also, music is too loud, couldn't even hear my friend over it. We got Chicken Bao buns which we really enjoyed. You could tell the chicken was seasoned but the sauce with it was also flavorful. Really off-putting taste on that chicken, like an old, not fresh, sitting in the fridge for a couple days taste. I was finally able to try the well known Ani Ramen House. Ani is a Japanese noodle house that brings stylish decor and of course yummy ramen for all to enjoy. I normally do not like broth for my ramen ( I LOVE the noodles way too much), the waiter recommended my dish and I instantly fell in love! Ani has different locations such as Montclair, Summit, Jersey City and more. Check them out if you are in the area and in the mood for some yummy ramen. Special shout-out to Alyssa the manger at the summit location who introduced me to this awesome gem and much more and Ian our waiter who was very welcoming and tentative. I ordered the Mazemen ( Brothless) and added the Umami Bomb which is a house blend of chilly and spices and for my protein I added the soy glazed chicken and Ajitama which is a 24 hour marinated 6 minute soft boiled egg. The ambiance was a bit dark and loud. But the ramen (vegetarian version with an umami bomb) was amazing.

This is really more of a 3.5 for me but I'll round up because the more I try ramen in New Jersey, the more I realize that a true 5 star is very rare (I have found one though). To start off parking is crazy on Bloomfield Ave, and apparently Ani recently moved so there was a bit of confusion there but we made it. Despite the bustle of the place, we did get a table right away. They made us put on a mask which feels funny at this point cuz we're literally only wearing a mask on the walk to the table but okay, at least they provided us with them when we didn't have any. The atmosphere is very hip - neon signs, Japanese phrases posted on the walls, servers in all black swarming around. It's obvious this is a popular spot for both dine-in and takeout. I'd checked out the menu beforehand and was surprised to find a number of the items I had looked forward to were not there. I guess they must rotate items or many of the things you see online are specials. Nonetheless we ordered karaage to start, I got the Spicy miso and my husband got the katsu curry chef special. The karaage was very juicy and delicious, but the color of the fried chicken was very dark, like it sat in the fryer a wee bit too long. Compare this with a traditional Japanese karaage and you'll immediately notice the difference. I will say the flavor made up for it but it tips me off about the authenticity of the place. One interesting thing is that all the broths are made from chicken, which is light compared to a pork broth you'd get like Tonkotsu. I'm not sure if this is the factor but my miso ramen did feel lighter than I'd expect, and had a slightly sour taste possibly due to the choice of vegetables in the ramen. My husband's curry ramen was basically thick Japanese curry with ramen noodles. It had a lot of good veggies and the katsu was great but it can be pretty heavy with that sauce. I did enjoy the egg and fried tofu I added, but let's all acknowledge that a $16 bowl of ramen WITHOUT protein is borderline criminal. All said and done we spent $50 here without tip and without alcohol or any drinks. I understand that ramen is trendy but at some point I have to draw the line and not eat it as regularly because ramen is not and has never been a high class food. Overall I thought the food was decent, the atmosphere was enjoyable, and the service was fast enough. I'll add it to my list of "maybe I'll come back after I've explored all my options" but I won't be rushing back. I have heard really good things about Ani which is what prompted me to come here but I realize now that maybe my expectation of ramen is different than what is standard here. read more

Was in the mood for some Ramen and I came across this spot. We had the tofu bao buns, vegan ramen, shrimp tempura ramen and the wings. Everything was SPECTACULAR!!!!!!!!! 4.5 stars!! The food here was great!! We started off with the soy glazed chicken bao buns. It could have used some more sauce or flavoring but it was pretty good! We got hot green tea and I made sure to take a picture of the tea packet because it was amazing. I could taste the matcha in it which is unlike American green teas that I've had. I had the shoyu ramen and added an egg and it was delicious! My dad got the chef's special ramen which had chili paste, ginger and lemongrass in it and it was fantastic. Luckily they have quick turnaround and we didn't have to wait long. There's a liquor store right next door where you can pick up some refreshing Japanese beer. We ordered the Miso Wings which were very crispy and delicious. We got the spicy miso ramen and the chef's ramen. I was in the area with a couple of friends and after a couple hours of hanging out, we had built up an appetite and find ourselves here on a chilly day. Ani Ramen House is not big in terms of seating capacity but for a table of 4, we waited maybe less than 5 minutes. I ordered the No. 3 Chef's Special (~$15) with chicken. This bowl features classic chicken broth, shoyu tare (base) enriched with chili paste, chives, garlic, ginger, onion, lemongrass, shallot, cabbage, chives, and scallions. I also opted for the Soy-Glaze Chicken Thigh at no additional cost. I also added Ajitama (~$2) to my bowl because no ramen is complete without it. Ajitama is the 24-hour marinated, 6-minute soft boiled egg. This is an absolute must in the bowl. The ramen bowl was super soothing, fragrant, and flavorful. The noodles were cooked perfectly and there was so much chicken! It was also super tender and juicy. I loved all the vegetable toppings which just made the broth that much more aromatic. My main complaint is that the egg was a separate charge. How can you have a ramen bowl without the egg!? It should be included, in my opinion.
