If you are looking to volunteer here walking dogs, I hope you have the patience to take several months for it to happen. Terrible system that requires you to set up everything through eventbright, which is a pain of its own. I volunteer at AFHS and it took going to one meeting, then going back one time and working with one of their mentors for about an hour to get you going on the easy dogs, then was just as simple to move up to the next level of dogs. I guess they must have all the volunteers they need to make this such a difficult experience. read more

My 70-year-old parent were denied because they could not prove the 14-year-old cat they had 3 years ago was vaccinated. Since they are older the cat they were trying to adopt was 7 years old! ASPCA says in 2024 273,000 cats were euthanized, but my parents couldn't free up a space for one more to survive. Shame on this facility for not actually trying to place animals in appropriate homes. I pray for the sweet animals in their care. read more

Came in for the dog walking volunteering, stayed to hang out with the many adoptable kitties. There were 6 (or more) enclosed rooms for you to meet the cats. Many of them were quite friendly! When I visited , there were some adorable kittens as well. Also a section for dogs but I didn't check that out. read more

I was so excited to find this place! They have lots of animals and sometimes unique events like cat yoga. But, when it comes to adopting an animal- GOOD LUCK. It feels like you are under investigation. They even look into home ownership. On the application you have to write down every animal in your home, every vet you have ever visited with said animal(s), and they even want info on past dead animals. If your animals are not vaccinated and boosted to the 10th degree don't even bother going here. Mind you, we do vaccinate our animals with the basics. The person on the phone was not empathetic at all. They are tyrannical vaccine pushers! It feels like 2021 again where people who weren't vaccinated were discriminated against by the majority of society. I will never ever go here again and I have advised my friends to steer clear. Way to get our hopes up just to discriminate against us because we don't believe in unnecessary vaccines!?! No wonder they have so many animals all the time. read more

I first learned about this particular shelter when I found the Walk a hound program and I'm glad I found them. The facility is well maintained and the staff is amazing! They have many programs and so many sweet dogs and cats in need of loving homes! If you are looking to add a pet to your family or if you can't adopt and want to help the animals here by participating in events. You can't go wrong with this shelter! This is the WORST place I looked into. I submitted an application to adopt a cat. I came from a family who had pets while growing up, as did my husband. We have been wanting to adopt another pet for almost a year now but have yet to find one- until I came across AAF. I was so excited to look into adopting from here; that is until I received a call from someone at the shelter. He asked me all these questions that I thought was interesting. And I understand making sure the animal(s) go to a loving home. He asked me about past pets and all these specific details that I didn't have the answer to right then and there. His demeaner was awful. Spoke to me as if he were accusing me of anything and everything horrible that unfortunately happens to animals. Our golden that we've had to 3 years is UTD on vaccines and whatnot. But what made me so angry was when he asked me about declawing. (I did not have enough information on the pros, cons, etc.) When I answered him and said that I don't know a lot about it but would like more information (like basics, pros, cons, etc) he stopped me mid sentence and said that he could NOT move on with the application process because I am an ABSOLUTELY BARBARIC human being.. The reason? Because the words, "I DO NOT KNOW ENOUGH INFORMATION ON THE TOPIC"... Translated to him as- " I WILL TORTURE SAID ANIMAL ANYWAY I WANT AND YOU CAN'T STOP ME".. AGAIN- I had no information on the topic and would have liked information on it. And yes, I could have done research on it beforehand, I will give you that- but there was a different way it could have been approached. This place has workers that make you feel like crap. DEFINITELY DO NOT RECOMMEND to adopt from here- unless you want to be interrogated. read more

Adorable kittens! The staff did not follow up with me after a week of trying to get an update on my adoption application every single day. After many calls and emails, still not a word back many days past the expected notice date. I was even hung up on when following up with AAF's manager, asking for an update. All necessary paperwork was provided within the day or so after applying. Additionally, staff told me that they would follow up with my mother (also adopting a kitten) as soon as possible, but ultimately never made the call. I was vetted, and made to go through hoops that were unreasonable given the procedures of standard adoption facilities. As an experienced cat owner and graduate student, I was spoken to as if I was going to immediately ditch my future cat at the first given chance. At every chance I had, I explained how eager and excited I was to provide a cat a forever home. Notice: undergraduate college students are not able to adopt as they are seen unfit to be cat owners (despite all proof and intent that they could provide a cat a forever home). Even undergraduates entitled to Emotional Support Animals with proof of paperwork are basically shown the door upon inquiry. Completely disrespectful. I am unsure whether AAF wants to provide cats with safe homes with loving owners, or whether they intend to hold prospective adoptees in a balance of excitement just to let them down. Very upset and let down by this organization that my family was so eager to support. I recommend visiting League for Animal Welfare (LFAW) if you don't want to have an experience like this. read more

I have never worked with with a more reputable and virtuous group of people. I have adopted animals from here. Because I saw how adamant they were to make sure the pet was going to the safest home possible, I decided to foster for them. I love the cats and kittens I foster but since I know they will make sure the animals are only sent home with those that are suited for excellent care, I am happy to send them to another forever home. I highly recommend adopting from the Animal Adoption Foundation. read more

We got our cat, Punk (then named Barney), from Animal Adoption Foundation in December of this past year. We immediately connected with him and jumped through a ridiculous amount of hoops to adopt him -- we loved him that much upon meeting him and had to have him. AAF's paperwork had him marked negative for FIV and no health issues were listed. We were told he was healthy and young, maybe about a year old. We took him to the vet they recommended and were told he was a little older than that, had allergies and bad teeth and would need us to brush them, but was healthy overall. He went into convulsions very suddenly yesterday and died on the way to the emergency vet. It was a traumatic and exhausting event. According to the emergency vet, he had congestive heart failure. A ticking time bomb, we were told. He had multiple symptoms which we could not have known, as non-medical professionals, were indicative of an underlying medical issue and a need for bloodwork testing. Things that the shelter would have seen and should have tested. From the time we had picked him up, for instance, his gums were super pale. I hadn't known then that this is a major sign that something was seriously wrong. Either the shelter and the vet are both clueless, or they are absolutely cutting corners resulting in placing sick animals in the homes of owners who are none the wiser. We are devastated at the sudden lost of our fur baby, and feel cheated by AAF for not testing their animals properly. They can't bring back our Punky, nor will we ever forgive or forget this massive oversight. We had only eight short months with him. Eight amazing months. We loved him. And AAF will never be able to make it right. What we can do is warn other folks not to adopt from this unethical, irresponsible rescue to save them the heartbreak that we are already enduring. We loved our Punk dearly, but he deserved better. He should have been properly tested for disease. If nothing else, his ending could have been more peaceful. Please do not adopt from AAF. Do not support shelters who do not take care of their animals. read more

I love the fact that this is a no kill shelter. It is clean and have a variety of animals (dogs/cats) to adopt. The training for their volunteers is thorough. Keep in mind this is a shelter and not a pet store, so the hours for adoption are set to have the best combination of volunteers and potential adopters cross over times. read more

Went there a couple times. Adopting is like trying to apply for a government job. Wanted to adopt an older dog. Let him live out his years in the country, since older ones are harder to get adopted. I was told it wasn't adoption hours. I asked if I could just walk to the cage with an employee and not get him out or anything. Just to see if he was aggressive or docile. Nope, not adoption hours. Several workers standing around doing nothing. All I wanted to do was meet the dog. You would think finding homes would be a priority. I understand that I can't adopt him right now, but I can't even meet him?? Save yourself the time and aggravation go to Animal Friends on Princeton Road. This would've been my 4th adoption so I know the process. read more

Staff is very diligent in finding permanent homes for their rescue animals. Now, that means they are very thorough so have your ducks in a row before applying for adoption. The adoption application is available on-line so read the questions, take them seriously, and make sure you are ready for the responsibility of a new family member and you will be good to go. From there the staff will be ready to work with you, and with us they went above and beyond. The facility is also very well taken care of and all of the animals seemed very happy, healthy, and friendly. We got a couple of kittens and couldn't be happier. If you are in the market for a new pet, this is the place to go. This no-kill shelter usually has many dogs and cats to choose from. Being a volunteer there I think that I might be a little biased, but the animals are usually very well socialized and would make great pets. You can feel even better knowing that the shelter is no kill and believe that every animal should be given the chance to be a good pet. Every animal that is adopted has been spayed or neutered, updated shots, and microchipped. read more

I have had the opportunity to work with Eric and his staff since they opened the new building in Ross on several occasions. They truly are dedicated to the mission of saving animals lives. I used to think animal shelters cared about placing their animals in good homes, but I was sadly mistaken. The people working there at Animal Adoption Foundation are very rude, as they stereotype and discriminate against potential pet owners. First of all, they ask applicants very personal questions, like how many people are in household (seeing if you're married or not), as they even want to know if if you let your dog or cat run in this room or that room of home. Also, having a 40-hour a week job is a no-no, since this organization labels you a "bad pet owner" and you're not allowed to have a dog or other pets if you decide on adopting a kitten. Also, don't mention your sweet kitten died, despite him/her not having symptoms of Feline Leukemia, since you will be accused of your kitten having it, otherwise. There are other non-contagious diseases that kills cats, as my kitten was bought from a pet shop, had NO diarrhea, fever, vomiting, or other symptoms pertaining to Feline Leukkemia---she was jumping around her cage and NOT lethargic up until the day she died. Worms and parasites were found (inherited from mother cat), had kitten de-wormed, but she died anyhow---- since by then, it was apparently too late. Worms cause cats not to eat, especially kittens, as she was about 8 weeks old when she died. I did research and found that mother cats do pass on worms to kittens, which I did not know until after the fact. So here I am: Single; work 40 hours a week; and am very sincere in wanting another kitten like one that died, so to fit in with my dog and rabbits (I had all 4 of them sitting together on chair, with kitten included). I have tons of references that can verify that I take excellent care of my pets, even spoiling them in their happy home. Kitten and dog used to lay next to each other, if not the rabbits, too. I used to donate to animal shelters, but not no more! Even my friendly dog was scared among the sickening stench this shelter had, which was worse than any vet's office I ever took my pets to. My dog normally does not dribble urine on the floor, even at vets office: But here at Animal Adoption Foundation, he sure was nervous, as he couldn't get out of that place fast enough! Even the kittens aren't very sociable toward potential animal adopters, as SPCA charges $10 for a kitten, as opposed to the $85 charged by this very rude, discriminating organization, who proved to me that they really don't have the animals' well-being in mind. By Animal Adoption Foundation's standards, 99% of the population should not be allowed to own pets. I would not go back there or any other animal shelter, after the disgusting, downgrading treatment I received, which by the way, I heard other people being talked to like they were scums of the Earth while I was there----no wonder shelters are full of animals! They take U.S. Government money hand-outs based on how many animals they keep at their shelters, so to pretend they are non-profit organizations----ha, nothing could be farther than the real truth! And I was even thinking about volunteering there: Good thing I didn't, since these people are preventing animals from finding good homes, where they could become pets treated like "kings" and "queens." Best place to put any mailed requests for donations to "Save The Animals" or what ever theme pertains to animal shelters: File 13, which is the garbage can. The people running Animal Adoption Foundation think they are so much better and mightier than anyone else: To them, people that are single (by the way, I lost my dear husband last year to cancer, so that makes me a horrible person in their eyes); work at least 40 hours outside the home to pay the bills and pet upkeep (as asked how many hours one is gone from home each week on their application); have a dog and rabbits that live together in harmony; and a homeowner makes us all a no-good pet owners. I am surprised the application did not ask "When you go on vacation, who cares for your pets while you are gone?" First of all, I do have my pets covered 24/7 when I am not home for any reason, so there's the answer. Funny, I thought I was on the same page with these people running animal shelters, since it angers me when uncaring people drop their dogs, cats, rabbits, etc., off in the wild, or mistreat them in other ways; yet, this organization surely has a "certain type of person" they deem morally able to care for and love their pets---therefore, their way is to prevent most people from adopting. Not everyone in the U.S. is married; not working; or living on Welfare! I hope anyone reading this will seriously reconsider going to any animal shelters to adopt pets----first of all, run like heck from Animal Adoption Foundation, unless you wish to have your potential pet adopting status judged by THEIR discriminating opinions. I have never adopted before,but heard great things about this shelter. My children have been asking for a dog for the last 2 years and after much deliberation my husband and I decided they were ready. When I walked into the shelter I was not greeted at all instead I seemed to be interuppting a personal conversation. I was then pointed to the hall wau where the dogs were kept,after a few minutes I had to go ask spmeone if I could see a dog. The volunteer could not answer my questions. I then went to talk to someone else who started my adoption process and was told I could not put the dog on hold till I haf all the proper documents. She told me many times the hours of adoption and the days. I told her I would b back on Tuesday with everything and she put my application in the dogs file. On Tuesday around 3 an hour nefore adoptions begin,she called to tell me that a volunteer had just put a hold on him. I was very upset and was told by the director that the volunteers get first dibs on all animals. It seems they failed to tell me that and the fact that adoption hours don't apply to the volunteers. I wasn't even given the chance to prove that I would give a very loving home to that dog. I have a house woth a fenced in yard and someoneis always home. Needlesss to say he would have been very spoiled but most of all loved. I was so very disapointed,and would never return there. read more

I just want to say that I am very disappointed in this adoption agency. I have taken very well care and loved all of my pets as I would've for that little sweetheart. However, just because I didn't have a veternarian I was turned away. I must tell you that all of my animals were very well loved for and had just as much love for me. You should be absolutely ashamed of yourselves for that representation. I am truly offended. Maybe you should post that kind of ridiculous priority on your fact page. And that is absolutely absurd I don't go to the doctor unless it is necessary as do my pets. once or twice a year for no reason is absolutely ridiculous. I'm sorry that I'm not made of money. However, I wouldn't have wasted my time had I known that I was going to run into that crazy concept. Its an adoption agency you aren't selling bloodline animals. All of my cats and ferrets lived a very full and wonderful life and I didn't take them to the vet unless it was necessary. I know that they loved living with me where they could roam free, ate and slept like kings and queens and had my protection. You people are absolutely ridiculous. It was an absolute disappointment for me to drive out there only to be turned away on a total speculation. I will not refer any one to this adoption agency and I'm even going to let them know how big of a waste of my time it was. You should be ashamed of yourself.
