On November 20th I adopted a "healthy" cat as stated per staff and medical records given at the time of the adoption, I was weary to adopt from there due to the dog kennels being closed for kennel cough, I went against my intuition and better judgment and adopted my cat at a price of 125 dollars. Within 2 day my cat had progressively gotten a cough and respiratory issues tried to call however due to holidays they were closed, on the 24th when vets opened again I reached out to our private vet and was told he had a upper respiratory infection and 3 rotting teeth. Called the humane society when they reopened to see what could be done and to let them know there must have been some sort of cross contamination between the dogs and cats, they were not willing to do any kind of reimbursement for out of pocket vet fees or take responsibility that I got a sick cat with dental problems from them, instead they said " you can surrender him back to us" that was there solution to a new pet adoption. Growing up my family has always adopted from Guilford, Yancey, Forsyth county shelters and a variety of rescues and with dealing with all of these we have never been treated with these types of unprofessional staff or substandard practices. Be very cautious about bring home a pet from this particular shelter or donating money to an organization that misappropriates your money.

This shelter is fantastic. I'm currently a volunteer at the shelter and have been for over a year…read more I have not witnessed the shelter before the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office took it over in 2012, but I have seen what the good of the Sheriff's Office that's done to the shelter and for the animals themselves as a non-profit shelter. New floors have replaced the old floors from the cat room to the dog area of the shelters. New programs have been introduced to the shelter through the benefit of the animals like using donations to help with pets that have heart worm to increase their adoption chances, taking in feral cats and giving them their shots but also spay and neutering them so they cannot procreate and releasing them back into the wild, and the many people in the area who donate to the shelter like toys, food, and well-needed supplies. I have never seen another shelter like this that has this much of a community behind it and as much of a support system for the animals, especially when it comes to animal overpopulation. This shelter sets a great example for other shelters to follow whether through the county's Sheriff's department or through an advocate for animals that ever wanted to operate a functional and pleasant animal shelter.
