On November 20th I adopted a "healthy" cat as stated per staff and medical records given at the time of the adoption, I was weary to adopt from there due to the dog kennels being closed for kennel cough, I went against my intuition and better judgment and adopted my cat at a price of 125 dollars. Within 2 day my cat had progressively gotten a cough and respiratory issues tried to call however due to holidays they were closed, on the 24th when vets opened again I reached out to our private vet and was told he had a upper respiratory infection and 3 rotting teeth. Called the humane society when they reopened to see what could be done and to let them know there must have been some sort of cross contamination between the dogs and cats, they were not willing to do any kind of reimbursement for out of pocket vet fees or take responsibility that I got a sick cat with dental problems from them, instead they said " you can surrender him back to us" that was there solution to a new pet adoption. Growing up my family has always adopted from Guilford, Yancey, Forsyth county shelters and a variety of rescues and with dealing with all of these we have never been treated with these types of unprofessional staff or substandard practices. Be very cautious about bring home a pet from this particular shelter or donating money to an organization that misappropriates your money.

This is due to this shelter's neglect. A puppy with a fractured/ broken leg isn't cared for properly and isn't noticed? I don't believe that the shelter did not inform us before adoption we found out from a vet after he started whining and not using his leg and we got x rays. The vet told us how his leg was very improperly healed from a 3-4 week old fracture/ break that was never treated. That time frame is when the shelter had him and they did nothing. They had no knowledge I'm not sure how they didn't when they neutered him and did that surgery. Just by feeling his leg you could feel the difference this poor puppy now needs an invasive surgery and they are doing nothing and won't help. All they said was they would take him and give us back the adoption fee. That is horrendous. Why would we give him back when their neglect caused this. They had no remorse and offered no financial help or emotional care. Do not trust those people.

Last week I got a puppy from there and took him home next day he started rapidly declining in health. Then I get a call from them the next day, saying his littermate tested positive for Parvo. There solution to my puppy possibly having Parvo was "u can bring him back and we can put him down and just give you another puppy". This was their solution before, even knowing if the puppy I had tested positive. Not only when they get puppies in as strays or owner surrender, they don't test them for parvo unless they are symptomatic. So bringing them in a shelter around all these other puppies and dogs. It's absolutely not okay and disgusting. On a positive note mine did test negative for Parvo but does have pneumonia (he's on meds now and will be okay). But when I was there meeting all the puppies, they were all running around in the same exact playpen outside so any puppy that was out there with his littermate could definitely have Parvo. Even when I took him to the vet this morning the vet even said that shelter is not a good shelter to get your animals. just wanted to give everybody a warning!

We found a bird washed up on the beach that was in bad shape and we called this shelter for help…read moresince we had no idea what to do. She talked us through it and helped us take care of the poor bird until we could bring it to her. Once there the bird sadly passed away on the trip over due to being underfed and really under weight (it's supposed to weight 900g but was only at 300g). She then told us all about the bird and showed us around the other birds in critical care that she was taking care of. She knows what she's doing and is doing an amazing job taking care of all these unfortunate birds.

Yes they are a kill shelter if due to aggression or medically compromised that a rescue partners can't take on. They have made drastic measures to have people stop dumping their animals. Its not just on the county shelter to house the strays. Its on the owners of the property where they are located. Stop making it someone else financial burden. Take ownership. Animal adoption is for the life of the pet. Being a foster they provide the supplies needed you just supply the love and attention till they can do on the adoption floor.
