My poor dog and best friend of 121/2 years got terribly sick falling over running into the walls, it was horrifying! I was so sad because I thought she would have to be put down. After 16+ years of experience with AHS my last experience with the staff member answering the phone on October 11, 2025 was absolutely horrific! After having to put my best friend to sleep after 16 years I was devastated. Grieving the loss and waiting for a message to come pick up his ashes had me an emotional wreck. I waited and waited for an email that never came (I have been contacted by AHS via email for many years). I called AHS on October 11 and was told that my beloved Yorkie had been picked up earlier that day by my estranged husband that abandoned us more than a year prior and did not have anything to do with us since that time. When asked why his ashes were released to him and I was not contacted she told me he was on the account as a contact. I asked why I wasn't contacted and she just repeated what she already said about him being on the account. I myself never put him on the account and was always the person who took my little guy to them. I was there with him when he passed away and paid for the services and for years communicating by email except for this one time and something so extremely important they dropped the ball! My estranged husband didn't notify me and then after he finally responded to me he refused to give me his ashes. This could've been completely avoided had I been contacted by AHS via email, the usual way they communicated with me. I was unimaginably upset by this situation and was told by the police that it was a civil matter and I would have to go to court to get his ashes back. The person who answered the phone that day was inconsiderate and talked to me like I was bothering her and refused to give me a straight answer about why I wasn't contacted. The chain of events set into action by the AHS staff member is unacceptable and inexcusable. The care my little guy received there over the years was wonderful and it's a shame that my last memory is how his ashes were mishandled and how I was treated. I did get his ashes returned to me but not without having to be lied to and disrespected and then threatened to not give them to me at all. I just want AHS to understand that due to the conduct of their staff and not communicating with me caused this extra grief and unnecessary emotional stress to happen. read more

We just moved to the area and are so happy we found Animal Health Services! The wonderful vet was able to see our Dalmatian who was suffering from some skin irritation from the change in environment and offer treatment. All within 2 weeks of moving. When our other Dalmatian was ready for his neuter and cherry eye surgery, we knew right where to go. We were quoted around $2k for the two surgeries in Portland with a 60% success rate on the cherry eye not returning. We spent less than $1000 on both surgeries with a vet who was confident in their skills. We were given multiple options on his eye surgery and they were able to walk us through the pros and cons. Something no other vet has taken the time to do! We will continue to bring all of our animals here and you should too. This vet is not our normal vet but due to the snow storm ours was not available. We can't thank this vet enough for being open. Unfortunately, our senior dog's health declined rapidly over Christmas and needed to be put down (euthanized). We were instructed to go to Vancouver or Portland since our vet could not get to the office due to the snow storm. We decided to try calling locally first and we were added on the same day at this vet. We will be forever grateful for the service provided that day. The vet we were scheduled with, Dr. Powell walked my husband through the process and he felt very prepared. Although a sad time, we were very happy for the help provided by this office. It was professional, kind and timely. We were very thankful to also be able to stay local since the weather was so bad. We recently received her ashes and it was put together so respectfully with paw prints and other mementos of our dog. We really couldn't have asked for a better experience. read more

Unfortunately after spending $1000.00's of dollars at this Veterinary office & building an excellent relationship with Dr.Tom on 3 different occasions I called to make an appointment for my 3 large dogs for ear mites & couldn't get in for 10 days to 2 weeks. They told me to call their new location in Vancouver I could get in as an emergency for $147.50 per dog for ear mites?! When I said; that's awfully expensive for ear mites she said you can take them elsewhere. Seriously so rude. And AHS here in town couldn't get them in for 10 days & then their instructions were to drop them off at 8:45 am & pick them up before closing?! Not acceptable or caring veterinarian care, so much for building a relationship with your vet. Throughly disappointed!!! Go to Valley Veterinary in Rainier Oregon where it's not just about the money being made they care about the animals, they actually got me in the next day!! Shame on you Animal Health Services .... Hope that new clinic you opened in Vancouver is worth all the $$$$ being made vs. quality care for our animals!! Good ole Capitalism at its finest. I have a cat that creates struvite crystals in his bladder. Even though he has had the PU surgery, crystals had grown large enough to irritate his bladder and caused twitchy cat syndrome. I thought he was experiencing urinary blockage again due to frequent and small urination (a couple of drops at a time). The local emergency vet diverted me to another emergency vet which also diverted me to a different emergency (Olympia to Tacoma to near Seattle). I started calling vets south of Olympia. It was Tom's, vet at Animal Health Services, surgery day. The receptionist placed me on hold and asked Tom if he could take another case. Tom gave the OK to come but to drive safe. I arrived about an hour later. My cat was taken in immediately and found not to have a urinary blockage but large struvite crystals irritating his bladder which was causing the need to urinate but only having a couple of drops of urine. Tom operated on my cat, opening the bladder and removing the crystals. Thank you Tom for taking us after three emergency vets turned us away. read more

End of November, before thanksgiving, I took my dog in for a mass that had grown very rapidly on her right shoulder. My usual vet was booked out, but at the rate this thing was growing I couldn't wait. I was advised to come here by a family member based on a good experience that they'd had. Initial visit with Dr. Poole went well. During the visit, my dog was diagnosed with a, hopefully, benign, tumor that needed to be removed, but the soonest appointment was over a month out. I take the appt because I had no choice but to wait, and hoped for the best. Fast forward to today, 12/30. I've specifically taken the day off of work. I get her to the vet before 8am as instructed. We check in, and I'm told I'll be called as soon as she's out or if there are any problems. I drive home to wait. 20-30 minutes after I get home, I get a call from the vets office stating that there was a booking error and the doctor that would perform the removal WASN'T AGAIN AVAILABLE UNTIL THE 28th OF JANUARY!!!!!! That's TWO months after the date of our original appt. What kind of a medical office doesn't check their schedule and confirm appts, ESPECIALLY PROCEDURES, to make sure they have everything they need for the procedure, LIKE THE SURGEON, and the patient is in fact coming? Dr. Nancy and the entire team of doctors and staff are excellent when it comes to caring for your 4-legged family members. They are professional, compassionate, kind and caring. I was absolutely horrified to find they cut off one of each of my cats ears without discussing it with me. The estimate I confirmed with them twice before the appointment was wildly inaccurate. The receptionist told me the ears being cut off was a mistake but I had to literally tell her she should be apologizing. Hands down the worst experience I've ever had at a vets office. Aside from when I initially explained to her I think Evo received the wrong dose.. Her reply was not, I'm sorry ma'am someone must have not explained... It was instead.. "We have no record for Evo ever being vaccinated with her 1st rabies dose" and, then proceeded in asking me to look up the records at home. Now, getting back to the State of Washington comment. . the vet offered her shot on Jan 4th 2022 --- pretty far from Sept 2021 and, the only 2 weeks out from the soonest available appt your clinic had which was Jan 24th. There NEEDS to be some serious training implemented at your clinic to assist staff with how to assist families over the phone & in office. AHS has done a great job of caring for my new kitten. Let me know what was needed for the first year of life including shots, neutering and care. Treated our cat as a part of the family! Also they have a separate area for cats to keep them separated from dogs. There are also calming blankets and crates with pheromones available to keep your cat calm while in the waiting area. read more

Dr. Tom saved our dog this past weekend. He was the only vet in town who had time for an 11 yr old very sick dog. They got him in right away and quickly determined the issue. He called us at home the next several days to check on our dog too. I am happy to say our dog is doing so much better. Instead of recommending rest and limited activity for my lab with a common problem (pulled cruciate) they recommended surgery. She is two and very likely to have the same problem again, and the cost and trauma of surgery is not the best option when rest and limited activity will solve the problem. Too eager to do surgery. Try another vet in town. Most office staff is friendly and helpful, but I was misled into thinking I was getting a one year contract to care for my pup by paying a monthly fee, and that paying a greater initial sum would cut my payments down to 6 months. They just don't have very good customer service regarding certain components of business. I am overall unhappy with my time there and wish I would've taken my critters elsewhere. read more

I came in with a really sick cat that was diagnosed with an infection from compantion pet clinic, and she took the time to look into what was really going on and trying to figure out what testing needed to be done. He is still not better but it takes time for test to come back, but she is getting me on the right track to figure it out. She didnt tell me anything false like the other place. She was very caring and I could tell that she wanted to figure this out as much as I did, Great place!! read more

I had to make the heart breaking decision to send my 16 yo fur baby over the Rainbow Bridge. I was not a previous client but they were able to get me in the same day. I felt so overwhelmed and they made it less painful for me. So caring and compassionate. I had paid extra to be there with my baby but, unfortunately, was unable because of IV complications. However, I was able to stay with him until he fell asleep after the sedative. The items I received with his ashes were so comforting (a paw print impression and an ink print along with a poem and the date of his passing that still makes me cry). This place was the only vet in the area that would see my new puppy. Nobody was taking new clients, so I ended up here by default. My puppy bit off a piece of a juniper-like bush and immediately started choking. At one point it appeared that she stopped breathing for a few seconds. My husband and I were freaked out. She started making some weird throat noises, like reverse sneezing almost where her whole body shook. We called the vet and made an emergency appt. We even brought in a sample of the juniper bush she ate. He examined her and told us that he looked down her throat but didn't see anything. He said if the problem persisted than we should do an X-ray. The problem didn't go away. We brought her back in. The vet didn't witness the weird noises or sneezing even though my puppy had been there for 4-6 hours. She only noticed redness in her eyes and gave me eye drops to give her. The problem persisted. She was having crazy sneezing fits and even sent them a video. Thats when they said they would have to do an X-ray. I brought my puppy in for an X-ray. That morning she had thick mucousy snot on her right nostril and told them about it when I dropped her off. They didn't find anything and gave me antibiotics because they said it was a virus. The problem continued after giving her the 10 day medication. My puppy was miserable. An entire month went by of my poor puppy sneezing like crazy and making weird reverse sneezing type noises where her whole body jerked. One morning I found snot and blood all over her blanket. I didn't see anything on her though. She had sneezing fits again and one later that morning. Blood was coming out of her nostril and I wiped it with a blanket and along with blood was a piece of that juniper type bush! It had come out of her nose! It took an entire month for her body to get rid of it. I wrote to the vet and told them what happened. The vets email said, "Upper airways on radiographs in a small dog like Luna are difficult to visualize and it is impossible to see a very small object." IMPOSSIBLE. Tell me why I had to pay $200 for an X-ray when by this professionals own words said that it is IMPOSSIBLE to see a very small object. Not only that, but I was also charged for the eye drops and $27 to "recheck patient condition". The vet later said it was probably her hair near the eyes that was irritating the eyes. I was also charged $52.27 for the antibiotics for a suspected virus which is bogus. They had to blame her condition on something, right? I paid $130 for the initial emergency appt. where he didn't find anything down her throat. So, I spent over $400 for what? For them to make up viruses and eye infections and tell me I need an X-ray when they know it's IMPOSSIBLE to see anything? This place doesn't care about your pet. They just care about how much money they can get from you. My dog deserves better. I will NEVER go back to this place again. Oh, and they're never on time. I think I waited up to 40 minutes for an appt. once. Zero stars. Do not recommend. read more

I took my cat there to be boarded, get vaccines, and have his nails trimmed. I was quoted $165 for a five day stay with shots and nail trim included, and told that if I picked him up before noon on the last day, I would not be charged for the fifth day. I went to pick my cat up and was charged approximately $163. However, they did not perform the nail trim (they did offer when I arrived, but I feel they should have called me over the duration of his stay - they had my contact information - to confirm, because apparently even though they had instruction to do so, they were still unsure.) Asking a customer when they have arrived to pick up an animal if they want a service that they requested and were quoted for to be performed is poor business practice, in my opinion. In short, I was quoted at a rate for an entire bundle of services and told to pay when I picked him up because I may not have to pay for the fifth day. When I arrived to pick him up, the receptionist could not explain the charges. I was told that she "did not know who quoted me or what the quote amount was," that the nail service was not performed, and she only charged me for four days. So, someone's math is off and someone doesn't want to be accountable. My advice? If you board here/have services performed here, get your quote in writing and pay ahead, and have them refund you for any services not rendered. I will not be bringing my cat back to this vet, and will discourage anyone I know from using this vet in the future. I appreciate transparency in pricing, and AHS does not provide it. Edited 4/23/19 to show response to Nancy's comment on my original review: I was frustrated by the lack of communication as well as the inflexibility and the poor customer service of the receptionist who had taken my payment. I do not have her name handy at the moment, but can grab it from my receipt if you need it. Rather than address my concerns, she simply said "I don't know who quoted you or what the quote was" and the turned away to process the payment. She was brusque and I understand that you run a busy practice, as I have worked in customer service businesses in the past, but when there was an obvious billing error on one end of the transaction or another, it was extremely frustrating to be dismissed with such an uncaring attitude. I clearly had the funds to pay and was able to pick up my cat, but I don't think it is unreasonable to be upset to be charged the same amount for a five day stay plus vaccines and nail trim, when my cat only stayed four days and had no nail trim. If the initial quote was wrong, then some training needs to be done with your receptionists on this matter, because it is unprofessional to provide a quote for a service, decline having the client pay ahead of time as they requested, and then charge them the same amount for LESS services than they received. You state that someone attempted to reach me and left a message, but that is not the case. I have no record of a voicemail, and if I had, I would have gotten back to your office promptly as I had my phone on me at all times in case of emergency. This was my first experience boarding my cat rather than having him stay with friends or family, and I was nervous. If someone called, they certainly did not leave a message. I do not see a record of a missed call either. Your assumption that clients will not want to stay to make payment arrangements or that they are in a hurry to leave town is a reasonable one I suppose, except that you could simply ask the client on the phone when they are making the appointment. I specifically asked if I could pay when I dropped my cat off, and was told that because I may not be charged for the last day, they suggested I pay when I picked him up so that there would not need to be any kind of refund processed, taking extra time. I agree that you will not be able to please every client with one blanket policy, but it's a simple matter to ask the client when they are booking the appointment what they would prefer, and have your staff keep detailed notes when they make appointments. That is a common practice in the office I work in, and I would suggest it is implemented there as well, to cut down on confusion when you have so many receptionists. No one should ever be given a quoted price that is not noted somewhere in the record of appointment. The "not everyone would be happy with any one approach, we do our best" is dismissive at best of my poor experience. I understand that there is no one policy to please everyone, but a good customer service model will allow you to accommodate feedback and do better moving forward. I hope that your business will be able to do so, and that in the future, other people will not run into this issue of misinformation, lack of communication, and a dismissive transaction when concerns were raised. I've been to this location twice. I will be seeking services elsewhere in the future. The first visit, the veterinarian told me that my dog's injury was a growth when it is actually a muscle injury. They tried selling me services that I feel was unnecessary and unrelated to the injury. Today, I went in for a follow-up booster and also brought my other dog in for an exam, shots, and flea medication for both. As I was waiting to pay, a relative to a person working there was playing with a dog who apparently belonged to someone who works there. The dog went under the desk to hide from the person attempting to play with him/her and he continues to lightly bat his/her face. The dog showed its teeth at the person and tried to bite him before he finally stopped. I raised concern and expressed "that dog did not like that" to the cashier, Michelle D., as she did not witness it because it was happening behind her. She shrugged it off. Apparently it's OK because the person had relation to the someone who works there after I had asked if it was normal practice at this location... "such as life" she says. Really? You're supposed to be a licensed, professional facility. You didn't witness it, yet you assume it's fine because they are a friend of yours? I do not appreciate the response or the attitude I received. Especially as a new and paying customer. Even if you didn't care...even if you weren't going to do anything about it, you should have: 1. Shown concern 2. Told the customer you'd tell your higher-up 3. Assured the customer that it would be taken care of so that they have better peice-of-mind about that behavior not being tolerated. Because of your unprofessional and extremely rude, condescending response, Michelle D., I will be making appointments for my dogs elsewhere in the future.
