This lovely pet store has a couple of resident felines, and excellent staff who care about what they sell. And they have a LOT of varied toys for your furry friends and all kinds of food and fun accessories too. Back in early April, shortly before adopting the two cats we have now from the KitTea Cat Lounge (another great place!), I stopped in here with my husband to buy some toys for our then 8-month-old, formerly-feral kittens, Nate and Anna. We rechristened them as Bernie (bigger, grey fur) and Ruth (tiny, black fur), renamed in honor of Senator Sanders and the mighty RBG. They go crazy for these rabbit-furred and feathered creations. I feel a bit torn, as I've known some very cute bunnies, and birds for that matter, but with these two cats who chow down on all forms of carnivorous delights, I sigh and let them have at it. I actually bought three of these toys at one point, and one vanished and has never reappeared. I suspect it might have been eaten, though that seems unlikely, but who knows? This is my favorite pet store in San Francisco. The owner Megan and her team are absolutely the best. Very helpful and super welcoming. Whenever I decide to bring my cats into the store, they make sure they leave with some treats in their bellies! They sell the best and unique cat litter, cat food, cat toys. I can tell they value quality and provide your cats with the best things! For dog owners its next do Duboce Park, which is perfect. You can play with your dogs in the park and then walk down the street to buy them a treat! read more

Wow. Thanks Animal House! I just had my first visit to Animal House. A trusted trainer, Aimie Porter, encouraged me to go check out Animal House. At the time, I didn't have a need to go. Then, suddenly, my pup had pretty much outgrown her collar, which could not be expanded again. And, her harness was getting a bit small too. Ugh... for a thirteen pound brindle, that's a detailed and complicated shopping assignment. It can't be done on line, certainly not on our right now timeline. We got the car out and prepared to drive to a known to me pet store, hoping to support a local business. It was a beautiful experience, but the shop keeper was frank about it being difficult to find a collar that is right for a thirteen pound pup. She made helpful suggestions. I thanked her. Then, we drove to Animal House. The joy started as we drove into a charming, quiet, clean, and friendly place, with available, free parking, right by the Animal House. We walked a short, tree lined half block, being greeted by friendly passers by. wow! love it. We arrived at the entrance of Animal House, which is a handsome, vintage half door. lovely! We were greeted by a friendly, attentive man, who clearly understands: animals, humans, and S.F. what a blessing. This guy might be a trainer. I didn't ask. And, he did not self promote. how refreshing. Well, as soon as I explained we were in for a collar, he started guiding me to appropriate options. wow. We found one in less than five minutes. And, it's quality and unique. It was way reasonably priced. great. So, I went to the next complicated ask, about a harness. Again, two good options were presented. The fitting was handled in the most thoughtful and non intrusive manner. One fit nicely. I was encouraged to try pulling on the harness in a particular way, to ensure my pup would not be able to back out of it. great tip! done. It was our first time in to Animal House. We loved it. Animal House is a smart store, with quality options. It had a low key vibe. It felt like vintage S.F. what an amazing gem. We went for a very enjoyable walk in the next few blocks. I adopted my shepherd mix Molly from the spca in January of last year and found this spot shortly after and they have been AMAZING. The owner volunteers at the spca as well and knew my dog the instant she saw her as she was her intake volunteer there. Such a small world and they clearly love and care about animals here. From fitting my dogs harness 1.5 years ago to just today working with me to figure out an upgraded kibble for her that fit my price range they are just 10/10. I did the 75% old food mix with 25% new food to start tonight and she was actively seeking out the new kibble in her bowl - she clearly loves it. This type of care and attention and love for animals is why you support small businesses they deserve more than 5 stars! Animal House is a cute little mom and pop pet store on Waller, a magical street in the Lower Haight. We first checked out this store, searching for the obscure pet food brand the shelter stared our kitties on. Unfortunately, Animal House didn't have it but that's nothing against them because nowhere else in SF did either (including the big chains!). Now we like to go to Animal House to pick up new toys and snacks for our cats (read: catnip). Only the freshest nip for my cats, organic and potent. They have a few cats who roam around the shop and sleep in the windows at night. Great little store with a great big selection of pet food, toys, and other goodies. Like most cats, the more we spend on toys, the less she cares about them but everything we've brought her from this store has been an instant favorite. And don't pass up the cat grass! I don't know what it is but she goes stupid when we bring it home. The employees are always helpful and genuinely friendly. The last time I was here was over 10 years ago when I adopted my dog Mickey and was suggested to go over here to buy pet supplies. I remember back then they recommended some dog food that didn't have too many preservatives. Came back for the first time since then and glad the store hasn't really changed. I cannot give this business enough stars. For the past few years I've stopped into Animal House to find new, weird ball-shaped toys for my roommates' lovely cat. I also love to pet all the shop cats, and the visiting dogs. It's kitty-corner (lol) from one of my favorite cafes, and I kept seeing a cute van, with "Wonder Dog Rescue" written on it, outside the shop. When I was ready to adopt, I looked up Wonder Dog, because I'd seen the van. Yesterday, I adopted my first dog, from a Wonder Dog adoption event at Animal House. The owner of Animal House was AMAZING. She helped me pick out the best type of harness for my dog's size and breed. She explained what to do when he meets other dogs, and she gave me an honest rundown on food, and treats, and all things dog. She spent about a half of an hour making sure I had everything I needed. She sold me the right product, not the most expensive product. As a first-time adopter, who only has experience with cats, it is so important to get good advice from the very beginning. As someone who's worked in animal rescue, I have so much respect for a shop owner who partners with great rescue organizations (who pull animals from shelters and get them into foster homes where they flourish), and genuinely cares that new owners have what they need to succeed with their pets. Therefore, this store immediately became one of my very favorite places in San Francisco :) Every Saturday, they host a Wonder Dog mobile adoption right outside their store with amazing dogs. When you have a monster of a dog like I do--a lovable monster--who chews through her harness an hour before a scheduled walk, what's one to do? Hop on Yelp and find the closest pet store to where you're staying and hope for the best. Lucky for me, Animal House was a quick walk away, and it's not just any other pet store. There's some legit soul here that can't be found at some of the Big Box alternatives. The owner of the store personally helped me pick out a new harness using her own past experiences of using them on her own dogs. These dogs, by the way, hang out in the store and they're so well behaved, it makes me want to bring my own dog in there to learn a thing or two. The owner also went into detail helping me find a new chew for my dog, and sure enough Posey loved it. They know the name of probably 90% of the dogs in lower Haight. My dog either tries to drag me there or to Duboce on every walk and I'm not alone in that. as a neighbor who walks by this place often i cannot understand why this shop cares so little about the city waste receptable that is often overflowing with rubbish and dog poop bags that greets the customers 6' directly in front of the door entrance to the shop. would it take 3 minutes to report this unsightly mess to 311 ? or 2 minutes to use the 311 app? to report the overflowing city can in order to keep the neighborhood looking better and offering your customers a welcoming appearance rather than disgusting trash overflowing and giving the appearance that you do not care for the neighborhood and street that you occupy. incidently i have called 311 often and also spoken to workers in the shop who don't seem to take any neighborly responsiblity. why not be a better neighbor? read more

I came down this way to find some kitty food for my girls and it was kind of messy, but the man working there was more than happy to help me find what I need. I will say both the shop and the guy manning the shop had a ton of character. Plus they sell all the good stuff for your animals here whether you are looking for tasty treats or need allergy-free food for finicky felines like myself. Having just gotten a baby yorkiepoo who I am thoroughly obsessed with, I cannot be more grateful to Time Out for directing me to this haven. I am from NYC and have definitely been to my fair share of pet stores, but the 515$ of toys in my amazon cart pale in comparison to the selection and quality and cuteness of the gorgeous goodies I was able to get my pup. The guy working inside was so goofie and friendly and helpful and helped me find my pooch a sloth IN A donut, a rainbow furry unicorn, a platypus (arguably twice the size of Riley), and a beautiful little porcupine/ hedgehog. I would buy the ENTIRE store if u could. And I will. Even all the sports jerseys and adorable rain coats and exotic dried fish treats... omg! Where do they even find this?! No amount of google or Pinterest searches have brought me to anything CLOSE as epic as the products they carry. Keep doing what your doing!! Hope to move to Cali to bring little R back bi weekly to finish building his personal zoo / jungle. Oh, man. The employees at this store are fantastic! I have a dog who has the worst breath. ever. I mean, really, it smells like something died in her throat and is lodged there only to enjoy a slow decay. We're not talking about "doggie breath," we're talking about the breath from the little girl in the exorcist. After many attempts with many products, we happened upon Health Wize and its knowledgeable, friendly staff. Immediately we were shown some powder (it looks and smells like grated parmesan cheese) that should be sprinkled over Talula's food. We got home, and before the possession could get any worse, we spinkled this stuff on her food like holy water. It totally did the trick! I won't say T's breath smells like daffodils and roses, but it doesn't wreak of Hell anymore. Add to this Health Wize's more affordable prices on the same bouggie foods we've spoiled our dog on that cost more everywhere else (like innova/evo), there's no reason to go anywhere else. They have great treats, great food, great prices, and a great staff! read more

Animal House is a pet shop in the Lower Haight and it's now my neighborhood dog whatnot stockup zone as I've recently become a dog owner. I like that it's an independent business. I like that it's woman owned. I like that it's a real community stop-by spot. I like that after the big 4 alarm fire happened on Sept 27/11 in the dog allowed apartment building at Fillmore and Haight the owner of Animal House gave dog food and supplies to the unexpectedly homeless dog owners of the building. (As a matter of fact, I love how so many businesses and people in the Lower Haight and beyond gave all sorts of money and things to the fire victims.) Everyone who works here is interesting and especially pet enthused and very dog knowledgeable I've found. They stock a lot of really good quality dog foods, treats, harnesses, collars, leashes, jackets, Halloween pet costumes, grooming tools, shampoo, compostable poo bags, ID charms, more more more, cat toys, foods and treats, and a few sorts of bird food and snacks. There is also a lady who comes in once a month on the weekend and cleans dog teeth - I can't remember which weekend or day but if you call them they will tell you I'm sure. Animals hang out here and all are welcome in. It's a good good animal house. read more
