My 13‑year‑old son and I love Cal's Pet Supply -- but not nearly as much as my dog (and the dog I foster) do. I can't even walk within two blocks of the store without my dog dragging me straight to the front door. She would trade our home to move into Cal's in a heartbeat. Cal's has an amazing mix of high‑end items and really reasonably priced essentials. One of my favorite things is that they sell so many items individually -- single rolls of poop bags, single doses of flea medicine, and the best natural chew section in the city. My dog's absolute favorite is the dried tendon, only $3.95 a stick. I always grab one when I'm in, and sometimes a bully stick too. Their treat selection is huge, with options in every size. But honestly, the best part of Cal's is the staff and management. They're always kind, friendly, knowledgeable about their inventory, and genuinely happy to interact with customers. Hubby and I love supporting small, local pet businesses and decided to stop in with our puppy Midnight! We purchased Evangers Gently Dried Beef Liver for him and he absolutely loves these single ingredient, grain-free/gluten-free dog treats! They're perfectly bite sized for training and contain 0 artificial ingredients! We also purchased Grandma Lucy's Singles-Chicken, for our Seal Point Ragdoll and both our puppy and our kitty absolutely loves them as well! They're also single ingredient, all natural, grain-free, USA made freeze-dried treats! Our puppy also needed a new leash and we came across the RC Pets Bungee Traffic Leash in "black" This reflective leash has been great for our puppy! When he pulls the neoprene padded handle is a lot more comfortable to hold onto, compared to our old leash! Not to mention it's nickel plated, so it resists wear and tear! I would definitely this small/woman owned business that opened in 1987, they carry lots of healthy pet brands I know and love for a variety of pets! The kindest owners who know pets and stock the best foods and supplies they need. This time they suggested some healthy dry food sample packs and gave me an insight that I hadn't heard before with regard to canned cat food: Cats who eat pâté canned food generally don't like shredded food with sauce- they only lick off the sauce. Spot on, now I'll buy accordingly! Plus, Cal's Pet Supply carries Ever Clean litter, expensive because it works. Not only do you have to change the litter far less frequently, it neutralizes and contains odors-worth the price. The cost, amortized, is about equal to cheaper litter. I was reminded several years ago when the owners heard my concern about how I'd get the heavy boxes of Ever Clean up to my apartment with our elevator out, the husband, Steven, not only offered to drive 4 miles across town to my address but also run the boxes upstairs so I wouldn't have to lug them myself. I figured out another way but I was really touched. My appreciation and loyalty run deep for this beloved local pet supply. Cal's is open 7 days a week and they have two green curb spots in front and around the side of the shop so it's easy to park and load your vehicle. Highly recommend! read more

Nothing but wonderful things to say about the folks at Cal's. I live in the neighborhood and drop by with my dog Joey every few weeks for some collagen sticks. He loves to sniff all the cat food and explore a bit before begging everyone who works there for treats. Everyone working has always been so thoughtful and patient and caring with Joey, who has a LOT of energy and can be a lot to handle at first. I drive across the city after speaking to a really cordial man regarding 2 Fromms Vouchers that I wanted to use as I have purchased Fromms dog food for 14 years and did not realize that not all stores participate in the buyers program. I was told by the man via telephone that this store does participate in the program This person,who I assume is the owner/manager was the most unpleasant, unhelpful human being. She treated me as though I was attempted to distort money from her. Wow. If this is customer service no thank you. I will take my business elsewhere. Good luck to this miserable person. read more

I'm not the one who writes Yelp reviews but I just had to do one for Cal's. I stopped by earlier today and had the pleasure of meeting and conversing with Trish. She offered my Golden Doodle treats and pets too! I couldn't help but notice all the high end food that they stocked. I mentioned to Trish that I was from Alameda and that I've been supporting a feral cat colony for the last 10 years. Out of the blue she asked me if she could donate some dry cat food. I was pleasantly surprised and glady accepted her generous offer. I was honestly shocked! She gave me not one but two big bags of high quality dry cat food. Being a senior citizen, I've honestly lost hope in humans because of accumulating disappointments over the years. Trish reminded me that there are kind humans that do still exist, albeit far and few. I will take the drive from Alameda to Cal's not only because that they stock quality products but for the true kindness and love for not only our furry friends but for us humans too. I first moved to the neighborhood three years ago and this pet store was down the block from my apartment. At the time, I had one new kitten and started shopping for my cat food here. I really wanted to feed my cat food with no meat fillers and 100% organic/ethically produced food. The owners gave me a few suggestions and that's when I became a regular customer. For the wet food I bought, there was a frequent buyer loyalty program where every 11 boxes I got a free box :) when I got my second kitten, he had cat acne and I had no clue what that was. The shop owners were able to pull out a pamphlet explaining what it was and provided me medicine. Over the years I've bought Halloween costumes, toys, food bowls, and treats here. They also do Christmas photos with Santa every year! This store offers what Petco and Petsmart can't and that's community. Not only do they know their shit, they really care about your pets and providing your pets the best quality products. I'm moving away in two weeks and SO sad to leave this place. What a gem of a store! Cal's is adorable and the biggest surprise for me was the totally reasonable prices. Great selection, quality offerings and really friendy service as well. I really loved the cat toys selection, which I found to be much better than the big stores: really cute and again completely reasonably priced. Actually, the kitty greens were way cheaper than at the BIG store and I love buying greens for kitties. It's well worth a visit to Cal's, especially if you buy quality brands of pet foods (and hard to find brands as well, while still being fairly priced). My friend and I walked in and were greeted with two wonderful people. (I now regret not asking their names!) Either way, the man who was there was super helpful. I appreciated that he ASKED if he could give the dog a treat instead of assuming that it's alright. It was so polite and from that point on I knew that he knew what he was doing. He can talk to you about doggies for days!!! He's an excellent conversationalist. And I think what I loved the most was that he cares about his merchandise. We wanted to get a toy for an older, more reserved dog, and he stopped us from getting a frisbee (he said that if he doesn't already play with them, he probably won't start now, so don't waste the money) and then he gave some suggestions that might fit (which were treats and still less than we would have spent on the frisbee). Long story short, they're not just in it for your money. They're in it because they really care about animals and they want to help owners treat their best friends they way they should be treated. I'd make the commute from San Jose just because of the service. 5 stars and keep it up!!! read more

It's been 5 years since I wrote my first review of Cal's. In that time Tricia and Mark have become like family. They are the epitome of the good that a small local shop, run by people who love what they do and want to contribute to a neighborhood can be. Yes, you can probably find some of the products they offer for less online, but you won't get the caring advice and excellent curation of options that they accomplish at Cal's. You can't stop in while walking your pup, have a friendly chat, and watch Tricia fawn over your furry friend while she gets him to do a few tricks for treats if you're shopping on a website. Honestly, i did not become a regular here until very recently. I was afraid that it would be a very expensive place, it being so close to the ultra rich seacliff neighborhood. Boy was i wrong!! I had a similar dilema to margaret f., in that there was no cat food in the house and my gals only like a certain organic kind that i knew cal's would carry. it was actually cheaper than where i work, including my discount! Everything is high quality, not to mention local and organic whenever possible. Cal's Pet Supply is the epitome of keeping it local - seriously, I have not been to a pet store like this in a long time. Leave it to the cool people of SF to have tons of boutique pet stores all over the city. Cal's is special 'cause they're not necessarily about pampering your pets with cute little costumes or pink carriers. This store is about selling natural brands of pet food, litter, toys and cleaners. It's very simple on the inside and the gal behind the counter is as nice as they come. My cat Shayna was put on a special diet and she recommended I shop at Cal's - it's very much out of the way, but I knew that they carried a lot of the brands that I needed. Also, they have cool Kong toys for cats and dogs, including this cool little contraption that keeps my little fuzzy friend occupied for quite awhile. Oh, and they have cat grass, which even the pickiest felines love. I've been back a few times but since it's so far away from my radius, I've found other stores that also carry these brands. BUT if I'm close and have the time, Cal's will definitely be a stop worth making. read more

Cal's OPEN!!! I was soo excited when I drove by I stopped the car and ran inside. I like the new layout much better than the old setup. And the service like always is 10 stars. Roy and everyone is super-duper helpful in finding everything that you need. My baby girl always gets goodies when she shows up. I have to avoid the store on my regular walks or else she will force me in the door, or cry when they are closed. I also wanted to give Roy props for keeping the dog food prices low. I didn't realize how reasonable the prices were until Cal's was closed for a month and I was forced to get my dog food at Pet Food Express. The same bag that Roy sells for less than $15 went for $20. My fiancé and I had just adopted a kitty from the SPCA who unfortunately was having a little problem with peeing on our bed. I had read about some pheromone spray that would help with that, so we headed to Cal's to get us some! We were greeted by Roy, and openly explained that we'd never owned a cat before. He was so helpful and straight to the point when he gave us tips on how to deal with the peeing problem without the spray that he was unfortunately sold out of. The best part about our visit was when we asked him about catnip. We told him how we bought some Petco brand catnip and had no effect on our cat whatsoever. We had heard that all cats go crazy for catnip and wondered what was wrong with our gato. He went on to explain how most of that stuff in stores like Petsmart and Petco shelf their catnip for months, so it's not fresh. More than likely, our cat was having no reaction to that store brand catnip because all the aroma and freshness of the herbs was old. He then got really excited to share some of his "Cal's Catnip". He turns behind the corner and whips out a bag with what we both thought was gonna be another type of "herb". He goes on to say, "I've got a supplier that grows the freshest herbs. I just got this stuff in!". He packed us a little baggie and we happily went back home to see if we could get our cat high on catnip! It worked! We also bought a cozy little bed for our cat, and as we were purchasing it he told us that if our cat didn't like it and failed to use it we could bring it back for a full refund. Roy was such a big help and definitely will continue to return to Cal's for our kitty needs. read more

My favorite, local, pet store! All products are of high-quality and reasonable pricing. I checkout pricing at Pet-Co which was the same, except shopping at Pet-Co is way less fun. The owner loves her job and animals and it shines through everything, the organization of the store (everything is organized in a way that it makes it easy to navigate through the small store), the products for sale and her attitude (she always helps you with a smile and asks about your pets). If you have any questions you can always count on her recommendation. I feel like Cal's Pet Supply makes it easy to give your pet a healthy and high-quality life. I noticed there might be a chance that this store has to move, which will make me very sad.
