I'm a first time dog owner and Janell has made a HUGE difference in both my adopted dog's behavior and my own quality of life. I adopted my 7yo dog Rooney in Nov 2020, not knowing that she was super dog reactive! We live in San Francisco and had to carefully select when and where we walk to avoid dog confrontations. We had had a few sessions with other dog trainers, but overall was disappointed in their approaches or didn't think they could understand Rooney well enough to help her (she was a street dog and is both nervous & stubborn - most trainers seem to advocate for a firm approach while I had learned from experience with her that giving her the opportunity to choose to obey always worked better). I had been referred to Janell by another dog parent in my neighborhood who had had success with their reactive dog. We have been working with Janell over the past few months on Rooney's behavior around other dogs, we've come such a long way. We started out with introducing Rooney to Duke the stuffed dog, and have since progressed to Rooney being comfortable playing near Zoe the real dog! I truly didn't think Rooney could make this much progress - this was a dog that when I got her would fixate and bark/lunge nonstop even at dogs that were blocks away. Janell is comfortable with a variety of approaches and is always happy to accommodate suggestions I have based on what works for Rooney. This was my #1 issue with other trainers I'd worked with - it often felt like they had a once size fits all approach and it's been super helpful to work with someone who can be flexible and can come up with training exercises based on what I know about my dog. We have been meeting with her roughly weekly in the SSF outdoor location where she trains, where there's enough space for us to keep distance between the dogs when needed. When we first adopted our dog, Lyla (5 years old), she suffered from a range of issues. She was scared of people and would often bark and try to lunge at strangers (especially men). She was scared of other dogs and would try to lunge at other dogs as well. In addition, she has pretty bad separation anxiety and would whine the entire time we'd leave the house. After seeing Janell for a while, Lyla has been able to tackle the world with confidence! She accepts treats from strangers and doesn't try to lunge at them. We're still working on her behavior with other dogs, but with all things it's definitely a work in progress and have seen some great improvement with her ability to be near other dogs. And - her separation anxiety has gotten better, we've noticed she no longer barks and whine when we leave. Overall, Janell is a great dog trainer who understands dogs and gave us the tools we needed in order to correct our dog's behavior and instill the confidence she needed. We're moving out of the bay area and are so sad that Lyla can no longer see Janell, but once we're back we'll definitely reach out to her again.
